Once upon a time, far away in another time, a girl who loved a demon lord sat in the bottom of a well. Feeling stupid, she curled her legs inward as her back rested against wet wood.

Tears fell down her face. "How could you be so stupid," She whispered.

Falling for one brother was one thing; falling for the other. It had just happened, and it took all her courage to drop the little hints she had.

But he never gave anything away in true Sesshomaru fashion. Was he ignoring them, or did he not notice? She was playing with fire, but she had gathered up enough nerve to shyly tell him how she felt but just as soon as she made the decision, the demoness made the announcement of their agreement to mate.

It took everything in her to stay in control and focus a smile for them. But it confirmed her feelings were one-sided. Of course, she felt dumb; of course, they were one-sided. How could she think otherwise?

Sesshomaru had made changes in his life, but to enter into a relationship with a human, a Miko no less, sounded dumb in her mind after she sat and thought about it.

He was so, and she was so, but still. In her heart, they could have been so good together.

As odd as it would have seemed.

It was easy being near him, easy to talk to him, and easy to match his mood. It wasn't complicated until it was.

She could not bring herself to go to his mating. He probably didnt even notice. Kagome stood and slowly climbed out of the well. Winter was just days away; she could feel the chill in the air, and the smell of it filled her lungs. It stung. Her wet face grew cold, and suddenly in a world full of people, she felt utterly alone. Her favorite time of year was now bringing her nothing but sadness.

She was glad no one was home.

The grounds were covered in dead leaves, and it matched her mood. But just as everything died, everything would be new again.

But not her. She wouldn't die; she would watch these seasons come and go for an unforeseeable future, and fear snuck up her spine. She was convinced she would need to stay in the past as much as possible but with the hope that one day when she did come to visit, she would find a new future. One where demons and humans lived together. Or perhaps one day, the well would lock her out of the future, confirming she needed to be in the past, belonged there. But there was also the fear that it would lock her in the future, one unchanged.

But jump after jump, she was met with the same thing. It made her sad. One day she would be the only one left unless she died in battle, which was always possible.

She looked back at the well house. She would go back and forth. But she wondered if she had enough willpower to keep a straight face around him.

She wondered if she had told him what would have happened. Maybe this was best. Having him as a friend was better than not having him in her life at all.

Having him sneer in her face at her unwanted affection would have been far worse than this outcome.

She slowly walked across the grounds, the leaves crunching under her weight, and with a gust of wind, the broken leaves were gone.

Kagome shivered.

It was probably done now.

She stopped and covered her eyes with her hands, and cried out loud. It was strong. Inuyasha could feel it from the other side of the well.

He sighed; his brother didn't follow.

Inuyasha laid his forehead against the wood. He wanted to go to her, but that wasn't his place anymore.

Kikyo put her hand on his shoulder. "She will come back, and we will be there for her,"

He touched her hand. "But we can't always be there for her. One day she will lose us to, even me,"

Inuyasha didnt want to leave Kagome all alone in this cruel world. Kagome deserved so much more.

His asshole brother didn't deserve her.
