Olivia rolled over to see the clock. It read 4:23 am. She had been asleep for less than 2 hours. The afternoon had been everything she could have asked for. Olivia couldn't help the smile that had plastered itself on her face as she remembered how Ed had taken them out for pancakes where Noah talked his ear off. Since they had left the baseball field, Noah had enthusiastically recounted almost every detail of his life over the past year. It was funny to hear the little boy talk about what was important to him.
He talked about starting school and how he didn't really want to go because staying home with Lucy was better. But now he really liked school because he had new friends and he got to play baseball. He talked about his birthday and getting to have a real party at the park. He had a bunch of friends from school come and they had pizza and cupcakes. He liked the red velvet cupcakes best, and they were decorated like baseballs, which thrilled him.
Then he started telling Ed about Grandma Sheila. Ed saw Olivia almost imperceptibly stiffen. He glanced up and made eye contact with her. Initially she allowed dread to reflect back to him, but just as quickly, her features softened and she slightly nodded to tell him that she was ok with Noah sharing this part of their lives with him.
"And Tucker! Guess where she took me!" Noah was so excited that the little boy couldn't stop fidgeting.
"Where?" Ed asked, trying to sound like he didn't have any idea of where the little boy had been.
"We went to a cabin and there were deer!" He got up on his knees and was starting to yell.
"Noah, sweetie," Olivia started, "Can you sit on your bottom, please? I don't want you to fall." Noah glared at her before sitting back down.
"Have you ever seen deer, Tucker?"
Ed smiled at the little boy who was clearly too excited to control himself. His heart swelled knowing that Noah was so excited to see him again, to be able to spend time with him again.
"Yeah, bud. I've seen a deer before."
"Aren't they so cool?"
"They are pretty cool."
"Tucker, can you take me to a cabin?"
Ed looked up at Olivia clearly caught off guard by the question. He waited for Olivia to take the lead on answering the question.
"Maybe this summer we can go to a cabin, Noah." She responded.
"Will Tucker come too?" He asked hopefully.
Olivia's eyes softened before she looked at Ed. She wasn't sure how he would feel about making that kind of commitment. They were still 5 months out from summer. She was sure that Ed was the one, but she had also put him through the ringer. He said that he forgives her, but she didn't know if he still trusted her.
"Yeah, Noah." Ed finally responded, "we can plan a trip to a cabin when school is out."
Noah bounced up on his knees his excitement too much to contain. Olivia smiled at Ed hoping that she was conveying how grateful she was for him and how much she appreciated his efforts with Noah.
"Will we get to go on a plane again?" Noah nearly yelled inches from Ed's ear.
"Noah, sweetie, let's calm down a little bit. I'm sure Ed doesn't want you to yell into his ear." She gently chastised him. Noah huffed out a deep breath and sat back down.
"Do you want to go on a plane?" Ed asked him.
"Yeah, the plane is good." Noah responded, finally calming down a little bit.
Ed smiled at the little boy before looking back at Olivia. Some of his favorite moments of their relationship were moments like these: the conversations with Noah and Olivia about all the fun things they could do as a family.
"I think I can find us a cabin to fly to." He told the little boy, who smiled up at him from ear to ear.
After lunch Ed headed out to take care of some things, but Olivia thought it was more likely that he wasn't ready to jump right into the whole weekend routine with Noah. Olivia rolled over again and picked up her phone. She debated with herself before deciding to throw caution to the wind and text Ed
Hey, are you awake?
No sooner had she sent the message than Ed was face-timing her. She smiled as she answered the phone. She sat up and turned on her bedside lamp so that she wasn't sitting in complete darkness.
"Hi," he said as he smiled at her. Truth be told, he wished he had taken her up on spending the rest of the day with the two of them. But he didn't want to rush into things or to pretend that she hadn't broken things off because he was ready to move forward. He loved her and he trusted her, but he wasn't quite ready to let go of his heart, to give it completely over to her to hold.
"Hi." she smiled back.
"How was the rest of your day?"
"Uh, it was good. Noah ran off some more energy on our walk home, and then he took a nap."
"So you got a break?"
She let out a breathy laugh, "Not exactly, I decided to clean up the apartment. It looked like a tornado had torn through." He smiled back at her remembering how Noah had a talent for taking every toy out of the box and then found a different spot in the apartment to leave the toy once he got bored.
"Did you get everything done?" She asked him.
"Yeah, yeah I got everything done."
The two of them sat in silence for a while both just enjoying the company even though they were in different places.
Olivia cleared her throat, "Uh, I wish you were here Ed."
He took a deep breath, "I can be." They made eye contact.
"Come over." She said softly.
"Ok, I'll be there in about 20 minutes." He said, and watched her eyes light up before ending the call.
