DM The Long Walk Chapter 2

The bull got closer and closer. The girls got over the gate before the bull could attack. ''RRRRRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!'' said the bull strolling away and scraping the ground to leave behind a cloud of dust. All four girls coughed and waved the dust away. ''That was rough'' remarked Poppy. ''Argh! I think I landed on something hard'' groaned Edith. She pulled out a little whistle. ''The whistle! I forgot that!'', she blew into it, but it made no loud sounds but only a quiet, raspy sound, ''Oh, no! It's broken!''. Later on after the girls had been walking for much further. Dark clouds loomed ahead meaning it looked like rain was on the way. ''Face it! We're lost!'' groaned Margo. ''My feet are so sore'' moaned Edith. Agnes noticing something in the distance on a hill.

''Look!'' she said. ''Wow! A windmill! Well spotted, Agnes'' said Poppy, ''Come on, let's ask whoever's in''. ''Yeah, we might find out where we are'' agreed Margo. The girls made their way over to the windmill. ''Hello? Is there anybody in? Hello?'' called Poppy as she knocked on the door. ''Hello'' called Margo. She tired to call Lucy on her phone, but there was no signal. ''There's no one in. And I can't get the signal to call the adults'' said Margo as she felt a drop of water, ''And it's starting to rain''. To each of the girls' surprise, Poppy was able to open the door. ''Come stand in here'' she said, you'll all get soaked''. The Gru sisters followed her inside. It was dark with some light coming in from the windows. The four girls waited for the rain to stop.

When it did, Poppy struggled with the door handle making a rattling noise. ''Oh, no! We're locked in!'' she said in horror. The girls gasped. ''I can't open it!'' groaned Poppy pounding on the door. Margo pounded on the door too, ''It's stuck!'' she moaned. ''Let's go up there!'' said Edith pointing to the staircase that led to the upper floors of the windmill. The girls went up the stairs where there were lots of wheels and bits of machinery that made the windmill work. At the top, the view out on the balcony was much higher so the girls could see for miles and the sails started to turn. ''Wow! Look how they go!'' said Edith. Margo noticed three figures in the distance, it was Gru, Dru and Lucy. ''There's Mom, Dad and Uncle Dru?'' she said pointing, ''How can we get them to find us?''. ''Try shouting!'' suggested Edith.

The four girls took deep breaths and began shouting and waving. ''HEY! MOM! DAD! UNCLE DRU!'' yelled Margo. ''HEY! HEY!'' yelled Poppy. ''OVER HERE!'' yelled Edith. ''HELP!'' yelled Agnes. ''Hey, what's that noise?'' asked Dru from where he was when he heard some faint shouting. Lucy, who had been using binoculars to search for the girls, turned to her brother-in-law in what he was talking about. Then she noticed four distant figures at the windmill

Lucy looked through the binoculars again to see it was actually the four girls. ''It's the girls!'' she said, ''They're up on that windmill!''. ''Let's go'' said Gru. At the windmill, the girls were still shouting. ''They can't hear us!'' said Poppy.

''No! They're coming!'' said Margo pointing. The grown ups went over to the windmill.

They soon discovered that while the door could be opened outside, it was harder to open inside. ''Come on down, girls'' called Lucy. Margo, Edith, Agnes and Poppy made their way down. Everyone embraced each other with relief. ''Where have you three been? We were so worried'' said Lucy to her daughters, then she turned to their guest, ''And Poppy we promised your parents''. ''It was my fault'' said Agnes sadly, ''I only wanted to see a butterfly''. ''I think dat's enough walking in the countryside'' said Gru, ''Eet's about time we called it a day''. At Gru's house, Patsy and Perry came to take Poppy home. That evening, Gru and Lucy had a talk with their daughters. ''You girls really need to be more careful'' Lucy frowned, ''Poppy was our guest and anything could have happened to her or any of you''.

''Sorry, Mom'' mumbled the girls. ''And remember to stay close in future'' added Gru. ''We promise'' chorused the girls. ''Can we go on that long again one day?'' asked Margo. ''We'll see'' said Gru through gritted teeth, ''but for now, we'll just stick to walking in the park''.
