A/N: WOW! I was not expecting this level of interest in this story! OMG! Thank you guys for the faves, notifications, and reviews! I don't really have this story mapped out. I'm thinking it will be 10 to 12 chapters…seeing as this started as a OS, I am going to have to take a chapter or two to hash out the timeline! So bear with me as I do that. And please, if you see an inconsistency, let me know so I can fix it!
Say you'll remember me
Standing in a nice dress
Starin' at the sunset, babe
Red lips and rosy cheeks
Say you'll see me again

(Sirius)
Sirius was sitting in the small patch of grass behind his flat, working on his motorbike. He had bought it on a whim last week from a muggle shop and knew immediately he would need to make adjustments. The bike needed to be faster, quieter, and be able to fly. He was hard at work, tinkering with the exhaust when he heard a loud POP sound from the flat.
He jumped up, on alert and wand drawn. Before entering his flat, Sirius sent a quick Patronus to James. Death Eaters raided the flat a month prior, and he managed to escape seconds before his bedroom was lit on fire. Careful, Sirius opened the back door of his flat and eased his way in. He muttered a quiet Lumos, his wand emitting enough light to illuminate the area in front of him. He swept his way through the flat, looking in each room and clearing it before moving to the next. Not seeing anyone in the main part of the flat, he took a deep breath and paused before opening the door to his bedroom. This is how it happened last time, he thought to himself. The rest of his flat had been clear. When Sirius entered his bedroom, he was hit with a stunner before he could get a shield up.
This time Sirius erred on the side of caution. He whispered a Homenum Revelio before opening the door. As soon as the words left his lips, he uttered a quiet "Shite." There was a body lying in the room, on his bed from the looks of it. So most likely not a Death Eater, he mused. He shot James another Patronus, telling him to please bring Lily with him. It looked as though the form belonged to a small woman, and he didn't want to frighten the bird.
Sirius eased his bedroom door open, ilent Protego in case it was a foe laying in wait for him. What he saw made him gasp and drop his wand. The woman, no the girl, could have been no more than 17 years old. The girl had dirty and matted hair. She had mud and blood caking her entire body. Sirius needed to find out who she was and how she had broken through his wards. He crept over to his bed and shook as reached towards the prone figure. He was a few centimeters from the girl when her eyes opened. She scanned the room in a panic before she dove across the bed and huddled into a corner.
"Where am I?" She pulled a wand out of her pocket and pointed it at Sirius. "What happened? How did I get here?"
Sirius lifted his hands and crossed the room while keeping his eyes on the girl. "It's okay. I'm not going to hurt you." He stopped just in front of the bed, keeping the width of the bed between him and the girl. "My name is Sirius Black. What's your name?"
The girl whimpered, "I-I don't," she took a deep breath, "I don't remember." She tugged at her hair with her free hand. "How did I-where am I-what is..." she babbled as her eyes became more and more unfocused.
Sirius took tentative steps around the bed until he knelt in front of the girl. "It's okay. You're safe. I promise I won't hurt you." He watched her relax minutely. "There you go, kitten. Just breathe."
"Wha-what did you call me," she asked, "Why did you call me that?"
Sirius shrugged, "I don't know. You look so small and so lost. Like a kitten without a home."
The girl nodded and sniffed, "I think I know you. Somehow. I can't explain it." She shook her head. "Something bad happened to me. I know that. There was an attack. I think. My friends and I?"
Sirius was about to respond when the front door to his flat opened. "Sirius," a voice yelled, "Sirius where are you?"
Sirius watched as the girl scuttled further into the corner. "Whoa, kitten. It's okay," he gave her a kind smile, "It's only my friend James. He's safe. He won't hurt you." He got up and walked over to the door, "In the bedroom, Prongs. Did you bring Lils with you?"
Sirius heard a bell-like giggle, "I'm here, Sirius. And I've told you not to call me Lils," she paused and snorted, "Snuffles."
"Haha, Lily. Look, Prongs, I need to speak with Lily in private. There's a," Sirius paused, "delicate situation happening right now."
Sirius watched as James and Lily entered the bedroom. "Not gonna happen Pads," James said. "Lily can help you, but I need to know she's safe." James scanned the room and his vision stopped on the small form in the corner. "Who is that?" James pointed at the figure.
"I don't know her name, so currently I am calling her kitten. She is why I need Lily's help." Sirius said. "She showed up out of thin air. She's covered in blood, scrapes, bruises. She doesn't remember her name, or how she got here." He walked back over to the girl. "Kitten," he whispered as he knelt next to her, "These are my friends. This is James, and his wife, Lily. Why don't you go with Lily while James and I try to figure out who you are. Is that okay?" He noticed a bag on his bed. "Is that yours," he asked, pointing at the bag.
The unknown girl looked at the two new people in the room. The woman looked at her with kind but sad eyes. She looked nice. The man stood in front of the woman, shielding her from any harm. He looked like "Harry," she muttered out.
"No, Kitten. James. His name is James." Sirius offered out his hand for her to take.
She stood, taking the hand offered to her. "Sorry," she mumbled when she stumbled forward and fell into Sirius. She righed herself and looked behind him at the two new people in the room. "And, I'm sorry," she tried to smile, "James. You look so like someone I knew. Maybe. Possibly. I don't remember. Why is everything so mudled in my head right now?" She leaned against Sirius. "You can look through my bag, if you think it will help. I don't know..."she trailed off.
Lily gave a sad smile to Sirius and James. "Let me get her cleaned up boys. We'll try to figure everything out then." Lily guided the girl away from Sirius and into the bathroom. Sirius could hear Lily muttering words of comfort to the girl before the door closed.
Sirius turned to James, "Sorry. I didn't know what to do. I would've called Moony and Peter too, but when I saw her, and when I saw all the blood..." he let his thoughts wander.
Hermione
She sat in the bathroom of the strange flat with a kind woman. Lily, she thought, I think that's what Sirius said her name was. She looked at the woman and tilted her head in recognition, "Green," she mumbled as she stroked Lily's face. "Eyes. Green eyes."
Lily looked at her, "What was that, love?" She frowned when the girl moved her hand in one swift motion. "It's okay. Don't worry. We'll get it all figured out." She took stock of Sirius' pitiful medicine cabinet and potion supply. "Now, Sirius doesn't have much, but I think we can make it work." She turned to the medicine cabinet to pull out some basic supplies. "Can you tell me where it hurts the most?"
Hermione looked at her body. She whimpered in shame. "Arm. My arm." She looked at her clothing and puked when she saw all the blood on her. "Sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry." She began rocking back and forth on the floor.
Lily ran over to her, being mindful of the mess on the floor. "What are you sorry for? The mess? Messes can be cleaned. Look," she made a show of whipping out her wand and casting a vanishing charm. "See? All gone. Now, can you get undressed by yourself, or do you need my help?"
Hermione looked at herself and bit her lip. "I-I don't, I don't know." She felt so weak and drained from whatever it was that happened to her.
Lily nodded, "Okay. We can figure it out. How about this?" She grabbed a clean towel from the rack. "How about I start, and then you can finish? Would that be okay? We can get your lower half sorted later. It's your arm and upper body I'm concerned with. I know you said your arm hurt. Anything else? Anywhere at all? Do you need any, um," she paused, "special potions Sirius might not have."
Hermione shook her head. "No. Just my arm. I don't know what I did to it." She looked at Lily. "What happened to me? Why can't I remember who I am?" She felt tears well in her eyes. "I know I'm a witch, and that I'm not from here. I know that I know Sirius. And that your eyes and James remind me of someone. But I don't know who, or why, or how. I don't know where I am, or how I got here. I want to go home, but I don't even know where home is." She sobbed uncontrollably.
Lily rushed to the girls side and held her tight, ignoring the dirt and filth on her. "Love, it's okay. It will be fine. Sirius and James will look at your bag, we'll get you clean, warm, and fed. Everything else we'll take day by day. You can stay with James and me, or I'm sure Sirius would be happy to have you." She stood and held her hand out, "Now, lets see about getting this jumper off of you. That should make you feel better."
Hermione took the proffered hand and stood. Lily took that to be acceptance and carefully lifted the jumper over her head. It looked to be hand-made, and at one point had been very beautiful. Through the grime covering it, Lily could make out the letter H on it. "There's an H on this, love. Does your name start with the letter H?"
Hermione blinked, owlishly, and nodded again. "Yes. It does. I think. I'm not sure."
Lily smiled, "Well, it's a start at least. Now, let's see what else is under here." She lifted the long-sleeve top the girl had on, careful with the wounds that were still dripping blood. When Lily got the long-sleeve off, she lifted the girls arms out to the side and gasped at what she saw. Her face immediately masked her pain, and she excused herself to get James and Sirius. "Boys," she said, "I need you to come in here." She smiled at the girl. "Nothing to worry yourself with love. Just need some help with the dressing for your arm."
Sirius entered the bathroom first, worry etched into his face, "What is it, Lils?" He looked at the girl hiding behind Lily. "Is she okay?"
Lily nodded her head, "She's fine. Just need an extra set of eyes on her arm. Any luck on figuring out a name? I doubt she wants to be called love and kitten by strangers."
Sirius grinned, "Yes. James and I rifled through her bag, and Kitten has an official name." He walked over to the girl and softly grabbed the hand of her wounded arm. He lifted it so he could get a better look at the injury Lily was concernd with. When he saw it, he gasped, and Hermione thought he was choking back tears. "Kitten," he whispered, "Are you a muggle-born?"
She shrugged, "I don't know! I can't remember. Why can't I remember?"
Sirius took a rag to clean her arm, "Kitten, are you a muggle-born witch," he asked her again. "Is your first name is Hermione?"
Hermione blinked at him, "Hermione," she questioned, "Yes, that sounds right. I-I think that's my name." She walked over to the mirror, ignoring Lily and Sirius when they asked her to stop. She didn't notice James in the doorway, ready and able to offer help. She walked to the mirror and stared at her reflection. Her upper body was littered with cuts, bruises, and bite marks. Her ribs and clavicle were protruding so bad it looked as though they could break through her skin. But what gave her pause was the big, ugly, wound on her arm. MUDBLOOD, she had the word MUDBLOOD carved so deep into her skin, she knew it would never heal proper.
She turned to Sirius and Lily, and then looked up and saw James, "Harry," she muttered again. "I-I think," she stopped, "I think I know your son." Before anyone could ask what she meant, exhaustion caught up to Hermione, and she stumbled backward, hitting her head on the wall.
A/N: Wow! This chapter turned out a little longer than I wanted it to be! We're going to have (I think) one more chapter set fully in 1979, and then they will bounce between the present day and the past. I just need to lay some groundwork! Please let me know what you think!
