by Storm Wolf77415, Wing Commander White Wolf, and Centurious the Azure
Deployment
(December 16th, C.E. 73, Morgenroete, Training Room, Orb Union)
The big deployment was just a few days away, and everyone had to be on the same page. So Stellar was getting some last minute training in with a few of the Dawn Squadron girls. Sebastian, Kira, Flay, Yukimasa, and Cagalli watched from the observation deck, as the Gaia leapt about in mobile armor mode, making high speed passes by the nimble Takemikazuchis, trying to get them with the Griffon 2 beam blades or the pair of beam assault cannons on the shoulders. However, the girls of Dawn Squadron had trained hard, and used their machines' superior maneuverability to evade as best they could.
However Stellar was fast showing her bloodline. She made the first of many mode changes in this training session, going to mobile suit mode, black and gold trimmed beam rifle in hand. She took aim at Izumi, the pigtailed girl screaming as she nearly avoided getting hit. Shimako was quick to come to her friend's aid, her white Takemikazuchi hurtled at the Gaia with all thrusters, Type-74 in one hand, Type-72 beam rifle in the other. Stellar aimed the shoulder mounted beam cannons, managing to graze Shimako's machine.
"Wow, she's fast!" the bow wearing girl rasped. Even if the weapons were set for training levels, the former Phantom Pain operative was still fighting as if it was the real thing. Indeed, Shimako didn't have time to think before the Gaia pounced on her in mobile armor form. She dropped the beam rifle, bringing her blade in a two-handed grasp as she parried the right side Griffon 2 blade. The Gaia streaked by Shimako, where Aki went high, firing her beam rifle.
"Too slow!" was all Stellar said, switching to mobile suit mode on the fly, rolling along the ground to avoid the emerald bursts before firing back with the beam cannons. Aki squeaked but didn't let it shake her. She got the first hit on the Gaia, a small burn mark now smoking the Gaia's right shoulder. Stellar just glared, hand going to a beam saber and the column of frozen fire erupting outwards.
"I think you made her mad, Aki!" Izumi couldn't hide the fear in her voice. Stellar just nodded, before lunging at Aki. However, Shimako wasn't about to let the Extended go unchecked, putting herself in front of Aki to defend her, bringing up the shield to defend, the Vajra plunged into the shield. Aki tossed the shield to the side before it got any closer. The three white Takemikazuchis surrounded the Gaia, waiting for the next move to be made.
"I'll say this much, the girl's got serious talent. I guess the training she received from the Earth Alliance served her well." Sebastian remarked, watching as Stellar made the first move, locking blades with Izumi, who had forgone her Type-74 for one of the Type-70J beam sabers that were standard issue for all Orb mobile suits. Aki then tried to get Stellar from the side, only for the Gaia to side step her. "I was concerned when Loretta told us about the drugs keeping her alive. Is there any way to wean her off of them?"
"Maybe, with time, but until then if she doesn't get her regular dosage, it would not end well for her." Yukimasa piped up. "We're just lucky to have those contacts in the Atlantic Federation who had access to them. Erica is working on reverse engineering the formula so we can begin producing it ourselves." Yukimasa whistled at how the Gaia gracefully maneuvered in and around the Takemikazuchis. The Gundam shifting to mobile armor mode, ducking under Izumi's sword, firing a salvo that just missed hitting Shimako. "I'll admit, Kira, your daughter definitely has your skill in the cockpit, even if it's not as refined. But given a little more time, she could give you a run for your money."
"I wish she didn't have to fight at all. She deserved better than this kind of life." Kira stated. He couldn't deny watching his daughter was a captivating sight. Still, he couldn't help but think of all she had to endure being put through the physical and mental conditioning to be little more than a tool of Phantom Pain, and it made him angry. The White Knight of Freedom mused, wondering if this was what it meant to be a father.
"We gave her the option to remain here in Orb and out of the fighting, Kira. She made her choice." Sebastian said, noting the dismay on Flay's face as he said this, but continued on regardless. The Gaia bounded across the rocky floor of the training arena, taking cover behind some boulders while firing at Shimako again. "Talia was happy to have her come on board. The Minerva's mobile suit compliment was pretty thin with just the Impulse and three ZAKUS. The Gaia will make a big difference."
"You're really sure about this, Sebby?" Flay asked her cousin, resting her head on Kira's shoulder as he put his arm around her waist. The redhead now understood how so many other parents felt about their kids being away from them. "Even if the circumstances surrounding this are…extremely bizarre. She's still our child. I don't like the idea of her alone on the Minerva, despite Captain Gladys's reassurance." She sniffled slightly. "All those boys, they'd want to flirt with her." This got more than a few people stifling laughter, even Kira struggled to hold a chuckle in.
"Believe me, Flay I feel the exact same way about this as you do. However, I do feel this is really for the best." Sebastian did his best to reassure her. "The Gaia is still ZAFT property, and only a few people know the truth about Stellar's parentage anyway. If it ever got out. We'd have to answer some rather awkward questions. I don't think you and Kira are quite ready to explain just how this whole thing came about."
"You've got that right." Kira said. He was still getting used to the idea of being a father, although Flay was eagerly adjusting to the role.
"Just as long as we can talk to her on a regular basis." Flay said, giving her beloved a gentle kiss. "I need to make sure no one is going to harm my little girl."
"You really have taken to the whole role of being a parent, Flay." Cagalli remarked. "Especially considering you just met her and tried to kill Sebastian."
The redhead's face took on a decidedly melancholy air. "It's because my own parents were never really around, Cagalli. As you already know, my mother died was I still very young. Daddy was always busy with work, spending his time in Washington while I was forced to remain either at the house here in Orb, or our main residence at the family plantation in North Carolina. I was alone all the time." Tears started forming in her eyes. "I would always get so sad when I saw other kids playing with their parents. I was jealous of them. I made a promise to myself that I would never be so distant and aloof from my own kids."
Kira put his arm around Flay's waist, taking in her delicate scent, the smell of roses. "At least your heart is in the right place, Flay. It's one of the reasons I fell in love with you after all." She just tittered as planted a delicate kiss on his lips. It was then the girls in the training bay stopped for the day. Stellar, now resplendent in her red ZAFT flight suit, emerged from the cockpit. Kira and Flay both smiled and waved to her.
She ran out of the arena, up to the deck. "Mama! Papa! Did you see me out there?" Stellar asked with wide eyes, Flay just took the blonde into her arms and gave her a delicate kiss on the forehead. An action that Kira soon mirrored.
"You did very well, Stellar. We're both quite proud of you." Kira said, earning him a warm smile from both her and Flay. Maybe he could do this whole father thing. "How about you get cleaned up and then all of us go to lunch?"
"As long as you're buying, Kira. I'd do it myself, but sadly I'm a bit short on cash." Yukimasa chortled.
(December 17th, C.E. 73, Yamato/Zala/Allster Residence, Izanagi Island, Orb Union)
Both Athrun and Flay had found a home with the Yamato family after the end of the First Bloody Valentine War. Athrun having taken the spare guest room, and the redhead sharing a bed with Kira. The Red Knight was currently sitting on the front porch, watching a movie on his laptop. It was in all a quiet day, which suited Athrun just fine. The battle with the Blue Knights was the first time he had seen combat in almost two years, but he knew it was just the beginning, so he wanted to get in the peaceful times while he could.
"Hello, Commander Zala." Athrun looked up from his computer to see Lunamaria standing there, head bowed slightly. She had dressed modestly in a jean-jacket over a red tank top and khaki capri pants that came down to the middle of of her shins, capped off with pink sneakers. She pulled down her sunglasses nervously. "Am I bothering you at all?"
"No, you're not." Athrun replied, putting his laptop into his bag. His eyes narrowed slightly as he recognized her from that day at Morgenroete. "Come on and have a seat, there's plenty of room." He patted the bench as he spoke. The pilot of the Phoenix timidly came up the steps to the front porch, before taking a tentative seat next to Athrun. "You're Luna right? I heard that you were going to be assigned to the Archangel as a liaison officer between Orb and ZAFT, right?"
"That's correct, General Connor was even kind enough to supply me with a Gundam. I'm eager to try it out." She cleared her throat and straightened herself up. "I came here because I wanted to apologize for what happened during our first meeting. I wasn't trying to make you angry, Commander Zala. You are a hero back in the PLANTs. The story of your part in stopping Commander Le Creuset's plans to destroy both Earth and the PLANTs has been told time and time again. So I can't imagine why it would upset you so much to be regarded that way."
The Red Knight took a moment to look Lunamaria straight in the eyes. He couldn't help but find them to be quite attractive. "Apology accepted. And please, call me Athrun." This seemed to make Luna relax a little bit, and her smile was something that warmed Athrun inside. "I feel I owe you an apology as well, Luna. I shouldn't have gone off like that when you didn't know the whole story."
"What's the whole story then?" Luna asked. "If you don't want to tell me, I understand. But sometimes having someone to talk to about these kinds of things can help you move past it."
He regarded her for a few minutes. Athrun had never considered getting a girlfriend. He would never had admitted it, but he was slightly jealous of Kira and Flay's relationship. They both truly bonded during the last war, filling in holes that neither of them knew they had. He wasn't sure if Lunamaria was the right fit for him, but maybe he could give it a shot. He abruptly stood up. "Do you want to get a cup of coffee? There's a coffee shop just down the street from here. If you're really interested, then I'll tell you there."
"Sure!" Luna said. It was a short walk to the cafe. Neither of them was quite sure what to say. They arrived at the shop, putting in their order with the barista. The two of them then took a seat.
"So, you were going to tell me why you don't feel like you should be called a hero." Luna leaned forward. "So why is that, Athrun? Why do you feel that way?"
A single, resigned breath and a squeeze of his hand, Athrun began. "The part I played during the last war is a sensitive subject to me. I still think about what my father was going to do with GENESIS. I nearly just stood by and let him destroy the entire planet! It's left a bad taste in my mouth ever since. Even if I am regarded as a hero by some, like you say, Luna. There's still the other side of the coin. It doesn't change the fact that my father's actions tainted the Zala name forever. I know how people can be, they whisper to each other, and wonder if I had any knowledge of it. If I'm going to carry on my father's legacy…I just don't need that." He cradled his head in his hands. "There's really nothing for me in the PLANTs anyway. Kira and his parents are the closest thing I have left to call family. It's the reason why I remained here in Orb."
Lunamaria reached across the table, gently taking hold of Athrun's hand. He was caught off guard at first, but then took note of how soft the skin of her palm was. She was blushing slightly, her violet-blue eyes full of understanding. "It's okay to feel that way. If I was in your position, yeah I'd be ashamed too. But to be completely honest, Athrun. I think you're being way too hard on yourself. You're not responsible for your father's actions, just your own. It could have a thousand times worse. Your father could have succeeded, and you could have stood by and done nothing then. But you didn't. You chose to act, and do the right thing, by standing with Major Yamato and the others, you had a hand in saving the world. I think it's something to be proud of."
Athrun just grunted. "Kira told me that, and Cagalli, and Captain Ramius, and Captain La Flaga." He rolled his eyes as he ran through the list. "I've heard that from a lot of people."
"Then maybe you just needed to hear it from someone outside your normal circle then?" Lunamaria offered, smiling warmly. It was then they both realized they were still holding hands. They quickly broke their grasp, both blushing immensely. "All I'm saying is give it a chance!" Luna stood up, dropping some money on the table. "I appreciate you telling me the truth, Athrun. Bye!" She ran out the door, leaving Athrun alone with his now cold coffee.
The Red Knight just sighed, wanting to chalk this up as just another attempt at someone trying to get him to let go of what happened. However, this time was different. His mind was fixated on those blue-violet eyes, now that he had a chance to really take them in, Athrun hoped this wouldn't be the last time. For some reason, she had managed to strike a chord within him. He thought back to Kira and Flay, how joyful they were on their dates, and realized that he wanted someone to share those times with. However, there was a part of him who was still slow to trust. Luna was going to be assigned to the Archangel from here on out, he would wait and see how she did.
(The same time, Orb Highway 7)
Meyrin relished the feeling of the wind in her hair and face as Yukimasa's red convertible sports car drove along the coastal highway. It was a crisp, beautiful day, and it was a perfect time to drive with the top down. To Yukimasa, seeing the younger Hawke sister was as good as it got for him. It had been a total surprise for her when the young soldier turned engineer rolled up in the car, telling her to get in.
"So where are we going anyway?" She asked him, her cheeks flushed slightly at the sight of Yukimasa, resplendent in a pristine white button up shirt worn open, black jeans and leather combat boots, and long leather coat in brilliant red. "I don't mind a nice drive through the Orb countryside, but is there something specific you wanted to show me?"
Yukimasa just gave a slight smirk. "You'll find out soon enough, my dear. It wouldn't be any fun if I gave it away early now, would it?" He stated, enjoying the light giggle she gave off. "So what do you think of Orb so far? I mean, really think of it?"
"I think it's a beautiful country. I can see why it's called the Land of Peace."
The car turned off the highway onto a well kept asphalt driveway. Meyrin stood up in her seat, pulling down her sunglasses in disbelief at the sight of the towering edifice of Sahaku Manor welling up before them. "Welcome to my humble abode, Meyrin." Yukimasa said as the car rolled to a halt in the circle driveway right in front of the towering ebony wood doors. "This has been the ancestral home of the Sahaku family since the founding of Orb."
"Is it okay for us to be here?" Meyrin asked worriedly. "I thought you didn't want to bring me considering what you said about your father." Yukimasa just gave a dismissive wave, which eased her fears some.
"For right now, at least. The old man left on one of his infamous 'business trips'." He rolled his eyes as he uttered those particular words. "What it entails I have no idea, and I could really care less. Needless to say, we have a short window of time to show you around the place." The doors swung open, as Yukimasa took Meyrin by the hand, leading her inside. She looked around in awe at the various paintings and sculptures decorating the hall. Meyrin was no art expert, but she caught sight of relics from Rome, Greece, and all the way back to Ancient Egypt.
Yukimasa shrugged as they walked through the front entry hall. "As you can see, my father had a passion for antiquities. Collected them from all over the world, and by that, I mean he outright stole them. If he wanted something, he took it. Whether it was by cash, or lead. No one got in Yukimura Koto Sahaku's way. He liked to live large, as you can see for yourself. He added a full wing on when one of us was born. Although Kuro and I had to share one, since we were the youngest, even then we both got our own individual floor."
"I guess when you belong to the ruling class, you can get away with things like that." Meyrin said. Yukimasa led her to the massive, pristinely manicured backyard, framed by two story wings on the left and right. "So, which of these is yours?" She asked.
He then pointed to the one on the left.
"Mori has the one front right, Ghina's was on the left side in the front, I imagine his has been gathering dust for quite some time now. Mina had the back right wing, and that one was shared by Kuro and myself, I had the upper floor, he had the lower one. So it wasn't all bad. Come with me and I will show my world." Meyrin couldn't help but be excited to see into Yukimasa's past and find out what his childhood was like. The wings were connected by covered walkways, Yukimasa opened the door and ushered the young ZAFT officer inside, letting take a peek at his brother's personal floor.
Kuro's room was an otaku's paradise. A selection of kabuki masks, swords, and posters showing the skyline of the great cities of Japan adorned the walls, one entire shelf was full of statues of girls from various anime, chief among them being Asuna and Sinon from Sword Art Online. "Kuro always was a huge SAO fan. Sinon and Asuna were both his prime waifus." Yukimasa remarked, taking note of a figure of Asuna's blue haired fairy avatar from Alfheim Online.
"He seems to be car buff as well." Meyrin commented, taking note of the other shelf, full of model cars, loving painted and detailed. A huge blown up picture of a 1966 Ford Mustang hung directly over the expensive looking full sized bed. She noticed how wistful Yukimasa looked at the picture, and the models. "In another life time, Kuro wanted to be a manga artist. He even had plans to go to Japan and learn how do it properly. He wanted to draw one about auto racing. Like Initial D." Meyrin caught a hitch in Yukimasa's voice, but he quickly brushed it off. "Come on, the best is yet to come, my room!"
They went up a side staircase and arrived on the top floor. Meyrin couldn't help but look around in awe, every wall had a shelf, and they were full of plastic military models, ranging from tanks, fighter planes, and trucks. Yukimasa regarded them with reverence, picking up a model of WWII German Panther tank. "It should be pretty obvious what my main hobby was. While both Kuro and I were fans of models. I was always intrigued at how the different machines worked, I liked to know what made them tick. It's what drove me to become an engineer and help develop mobile suits at Morgenroete." He took his coat, draping it over the back of the seat as he sat down at the wide desk, running his fingers along the countertop, letting the memories come rushing back. "A lot of late nights were spent at this table, putting them together, gluing and painting. I would get so lost in it that I forgot to eat at times."
But then his expression darkened, and his hand clenched into a fist. "We had such dreams, my brother and I, really we all did. Until that day…and our father went psycho." He just shook his head as he tried to banish the unpleasant memories from his mind. "He was a hardass even when we were kids, although not as big of a hardass. He built a movie theater in the main part of the house because Ghina was a huge movie buff. We would have family movie night every Sunday, and he even set up this mini soccer arena, because Kuro and I played when we were kids. Dad even came to all our games. Although both of those places have been dark for quite some time."
"What caused him to become like that?" Meyrin asked, having since taken a seat on the edge of the bed.
"Well, to tell that story, a little context is needed." Yukimasa picked up a simple wooden picture frame off the desk, passing it to her as he took a seat next to her It contained a photograph of a woman who looked quite striking even in her early forties, her black hair was cut in a bob, just above her chin, violet blue eyes holding a maternal air. Meyrin didn't need Yukimasa to tell her who it was, but she listened anyway. "Our mother, Hitomi Kokoro Sahaku. A loving woman with a very strong sense of justice. She also was a very strong believer of giving back to the community. Mom coached the soccer team Kuro and I played on. She was the center of our entire world."
He didn't bother to hide the tears. Yukimasa knew Meyrin wouldn't hold it against him. "It doesn't have to be this way. Once this is all over, movie nights can be a thing again, we can invite everyone from both our ships over. And I'm certain there are plenty of kids who would love to play in the arena. It would make them all feel like big shots." This made Yukimasa smile, and in turn made her smile. "Besides, I'm sure your mother would want it that way, right?"
"Yeah, that sounds like what Mom would want. However, Dad didn't feel that way. As much as my parents loved each other, and they did. Like any couple, they had their differing opinions about where Orb should stand on the global stage. My father wanted closer ties to the Atlantic Federation, which is no secret, but my mother had hidden sympathies to the PLANTs. She used her political connections with those who thought the same as her, and put together a mercy mission to deliver food from the United States of South America to the PLANTs. Blue Cosmos didn't like that, and with elements of the Atlantic Federation Armed Forces who supported them, attacked the convoy and destroyed the lead ship with all hands."
Meyrin gasped as the realization dawned on her, hands coming up to her mouth. "She died during the Mandelbrot Incident!" A slight nod was the only response he could give her. "Oh Yukimasa, I'm so sorry!" She actually came over and started to hug him. This caught him by surprise, causing them fall down onto the bed together. He grunted in surprise, although he certainly wouldn't complain. He could now tell just how firm Meyrin's body was, pressed up against the way she was.
The pigtailed redhead's entire face turned the same shade as her hair. She began apologizing profusely. "S-sorry. I just got such an instinct to comfort you that I was a little too forceful. L-listen, I care about you a lot. It just seemed like the right thing to do. You've been so wonderful to me ever since we met. I'm not like my sister. I can't pilot a mobile suit. I'm not that good with fire arms either. Everyone looks at her because she's so good at everything and gets along so easily with everyone. I've always been second best. Nobody except for you gave me a second glance. You made me feel special. I want you to know how special you are to me. I can't do what my sister does, but I want to support you with everything I have."
He pulled her close to him, her face now buried in the middle of his chest. If Meyrin wasn't blushing before. She certainly was now! Yukimasa gently rubbed her back, it was a very inviting sensation. The younger Hawke sister wasn't about to have it stop. "Thank you so much for saying that Meyrin. I'm glad to know you're in my corner. I'll admit that I wasn't sure what to do with myself when I joined ZAFT to get close to Shinn and Mayu. You made those days a little easier to bear."
Yukimasa's face became hard again, but not as much as before, a testament to Meyrin's recent words. "But what happened with my family couldn't be stopped. Mom went down with the ship, and Dad turned the jackass dial up to twelve. Our childhood stopped after that day. The next thing I knew, my old man pushed me into the military, and was grooming me for an officer's position. I still remember what he said." He cleared his throat, trying his best to imitate Yukimura. "'It's time to put aside childish things and be a man, son. You have a duty to your homeland, and I expect you to carry it out, son.' I lost all of my passions, and became a soldier, eventually taking command of Tenchu, becoming little more than Dad's glorified glorified hatchet man."
As they both stood up, Yukimasa gave his room a final longing glance. "Let's go out in the garden. If I stay here, it will become too much." Meyrin took his hand and they walked downstairs where they found a seat on a concrete bench, shaded by a grove of redwood trees. "It wasn't just Dad and I who were affected by Mom's death. Mori saw right away what kind of monster our father was becoming, and he was cast out as a result. Both Ghina and Mina willingly followed Dad's example and went down their own dark path, trying to mooch off the Atlantic Federation, and Kuro ironically became an engineer, trying to help out on the homefront. So yeah, my family is kind of fucked up."
Meyrin said nothing, just holding onto Yukimasa's arm as she curled up against his side. He in turn put his arm around her waist, and the two enjoyed the quiet of the garden, not wanting the moment to end. It was almost as if there was not war raging on distant shores or in the depths of space.
(December 20th, C.E. 73, Pearl Harbor Naval Base Training Field 45, Atlantic Federation)
The GAT-X511 Patriot Gundam hurtled through the sky on crimson wings. He was surrounded by five black and red painted Windams. It might have seemed ridiculous to some, but anyone who knew Mark Lamperouge's ways would not be surprised at all. He regularly trained against multiple opponents at once. Many young hotshots had taken a crack at being the old man's sparring partner, and by the end, they usually ended up passed out on the tarmac. Ezra had been quite eager to show his stuff against his new commanding officer, although Takachi and the rest of the squadron were a bit more reserved.
That being said, the soldiers under the Fox's command still had their pride. Takachi, Asher, Alissa, Taylor, and Ezra stood as one against Mark. The older pilot just smirked. "All right, children. You know what time it is. We have to break in our newest member, isn't that right Lieutenant Kanitz?" He addressed Ezra with those words.
"Yes, Admiral." Ezra was equal parts terrified and excited. He was terrified because even if he did have the rest of his squad backing him up, he was still going toe to toe with one of the Atlantic Federation's very best. Mark was pressing fifty, but the Crimson Fox clearly hadn't lost any of his fire. He remembered how he went toe to toe with Yzak during the failed nuclear strike. But it was also exhilarating to know his boss wanted to know just what he could do by facing him personally.
"Then let us begin the proceedings!" Mark raised the black and red Lupus, firing the first shot of the match. The five Windams quickly scattered in all directions, Ezra just barely managing to avoid getting grazed across the shoulder. Alyssa took the lead, opening fire with her beam rifle, all the weapons had been set to low power as this was a mere training session followed by a barrage of paint filled missiles from her Jet Striker pack. Although It was a simple matter for Mark to avoid them, spraying brilliant pink paint all over the barren ground of the training yard.
Taylor and Asher both moved to flank the Patriot, coming at him from the right and left respectively, Taylor firing another barrage of paint filled missiles while Asher went for one of the Stiletto anti-armor penetrators, tossing it at the black and red Gundam. Mark was nonplussed. A spray of 75mm shells from the Patriot's Igelstellung CIWS destroyed the rocket propelled knife, and a burst of the Baelana plasma cannons destroyed the missiles. This was the opening Alyssa was waiting for, having gone up trying to hit Mark from above, beam saber drawn. "You better think fast, Boss Man!" Alyssa cried, ready for a backhanded strike.
"Is that a fact, Ensign?" The Crimson Fox responded, Alyssa's eyes grew big as he brought arm containing his anti-beam shield up to bash her Windam square in the chest, sending her tumbling end over end, the crimson wings flared open, and the Patriot's mighty engines flared to life and in less time that any of them could blink. Mark had closed the distance between him and Alyssa. But she was quick to react, bringing her shield up to block, as the flaming blade slashed across it, marring the black and red surface, followed by a pair of paint shells from the Xiphas railguns, moving so fast they burned the air around them, leaving yellow streaks across the mid morning sky. "Your maneuver would probably worked if I hadn't been the one to teach it to you!"
Alissa raised her shield, crying out as splotches of brilliant red paint marred its surface. Asher raced to her defense, firing his own paint missiles. But Mark was quicker on the draw, firing his plasma cannons, causing a cloud of bright blue paint to come to life, obscuring the brilliant light of the sun.
"They do say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Admiral!" Takachi responded as he launched another barrage of paint missiles before squeezing off a salvo from his beam rifle. Mark managed to dodge the beams with little trouble, but the missiles would be harder, instead he brought the shield up to defend against the worst, a purple cloud bloomed outward, indicating a direct hit, bright purple paint covering a good two-thirds of the defensive apparatus. All members of the Crimson Fox's squadron couldn't help laugh a little.
Takachi let out a small chortle of victory. "I have to say that you wear the color very well, sir. It's nice to change things up every once in a while. The black and red is all good, but a little extra splash of color isn't a bad thing now is it?"
"I would agree with you Captain Murakumo, but purple is not really my color." Mark said dryly, narrowly avoiding a double attack from Asher and Taylor, having thrown both his rifle and shield in the air in order to draw his two ES04B beam sabers, slashing both of them across the torso while he deftly caught the other weapons out of the air, wheeling about to fire at Alyssa again, who launched a pair of her own paint missiles. Patriot rocketed upwards, letting yellow paint spread across the ground along with Taylor's pink blotches.
"Damn it!" Alissa cursed, angry at having missed the target yet again. "It's not fair when you have a speed demon for a mobile suit, Admiral!"
"I don't see how that's my problem, Ensign Fortissimo. You know better than anyone what Freedom can do in the right hands." Mark said, smirking as the Baelanas folded over once again, this time joined by the Xiphas, and the Lupus. "I may not be Kira Yamato, but if he can pull this off, then so can I So I will just tell you to suck it up and endure!" Alissa screamed, nearly driving her Windam into the ground to avoid the incoming rain of plasma fire, depleted uranium shells, and emerald lances. Asher, and Takachi both winced in visible pain. Taylor just looked on, a thin smile on her lips as she took pictures of the rather comical moment.
It was then Ezra finally joined the fray, squeezing off a few rounds to draw the Patriot's attention away from Alissa. He flinched a little when the black and red Freedom copy turned to face him, the brilliant emerald green eyes glowing ominously. "So glad you decided to join us, Lieutenant Kanitz." Mark's tone still hadn't deviated from his usual wry tone. "So now you know understand what it means to go through the Lamperouge School of Pain!" Mark let out an evil chuckle. "So grit your teeth and get ready, because class is about to begin!"
Ezra gritted his teeth, raising his beam rifle as Patriot loomed ever close to him. He fired a couple of rounds from his rifle, complementing that with a barrage of missiles. But what Mark didn't expect was the quick CIWS burst that followed, the 12.5mm shells sprayed outwards, hitting the just fired missiles, detonating them prematurely, creating a thick cloud of blue paint that obscured Patriot's sensors. Mark began looking around, only to nearly get caught in the back by more of Takachi's purple paint missiles.
Patriot lobbed another pair of paint shells at Takachi, only for him to quickly evade to the side, only for Asher to get red paint plastered across the torso and right leg. Asher let out a wordless curse, firing his beam rifle, but Patriot was too fast, once again soaring high into the sky on those brilliant crimson wings. Ezra took that as a challenge, he drew as much power from his Windam's Jet Striker pack, rising up to meet his commanding officer beam saber in hand. Mark just ignited his own beam saber.
A slight blue glow emanated from where the two blades intersected, sparks flying off. Ezra did his best to hold his ground, but Mark was giving it back just as much. "So this is the Crimson Fox in all his fiery glory!" The young pilot smirked. "I have to say it's more than a little exhilarating!" He then broke the blade lock, flipping his mobile suit in midair, only to be rewarded with a point blank assault from the Patriot's railguns, getting him along the back from head to toe with red paint, followed by a shield bash. Ezra struggled to keep his machine in the air.
The wizened old pilot's face appeared on Ezra's cockpit monitor. His expression a mixture of pride and amusement. Mark could see Ezra's potential to be a great pilot, he would just need a little more fine tuning around the edges. "You were bold with that last move, Lieutenant Kanitz. Although I'm afraid you came up a little short." Mark brought his beam saber up in a slightly mocking salute. "I think everyone's had enough for one day. Class dismissed!" All five pilots let out exhausted groans of relief as they all descended to the ground. Everyone emerged from their machines, drenched in sweat.
It was then Nathan walked up. The man known as the Steel Fox had been another of Mark's proteges alongside Takachi and Jean-Pierre, serving as the Crimson Fox's flag captain for the last six years. "It looks you all got put through the meat grinder again." He remarked, paying no attention to the irritated grunt Asher gave off or the slightly snarky glares from Taylor and Alissa, instead offering bottles of water to everyone, before addressing Ezra. "How did you fare in your first outing against the Admiral, Lieutenant Kanitz?"
"I won't mince words. I still have a long way to go, Captain Anderson." Ezra stated, downing the precious fluid in two gulps. "But if I ever needed proof that our commanding officer is one of the best. I just saw it here and now."
"A wise outlook to have, Lieutenant. You can learn quite a bit from Vice Admiral Lamperouge." Nathan remarked, before turning to face Mark. "As a matter of fact, sir. I have some news to report. It seems we just got another addition to the squadron." This caught the Crimson Fox off guard, but he knew the Steel Fox well enough to wait until he had the full story. Mark just motioned with his hand, indicating for Nathan to continue. Indeed everyone was curious at this turn of events. Ezra had just joined the squadron and now they were already getting someone else?
Nathan just adjusted his glasses. "You'll understand when you meet her, sir. She's waiting in the crew lounge now. I figured the meet and greet could happen once everyone got cleaned up."
"You heard Captain Anderson. We have a new addition to the team, I want all of you cleaned up and in the crew lounge in twenty minutes. Dismissed!" He barked. The pilots saluted and made for the showers. And in near exactly twenty minutes everyone was assembled in full duty uniform. Takachi had opted to roll up the sleeves of his uniform, while also having the collar open, Asher didn't have his sleeves rolled up, but the collar was unbuttoned, revealing a decidedly non-regulation black t-shirt underneath. The girls kept their uniforms more within the code, while also giving it their own slight personal touch. Alyssa had on a pair of headphones with cat ears while Taylor had her pink hair in twin tails, a small pink heart clip on the left side.
It was then Nathan came in, followed by who could only be the newest part of the squadron. A young woman of seventeen with red hair done up in a pair of short twin tails with the rest hanging down loosely past her shoulders, amber eyes held a playful, teasing gleam as she stood at parade rest stance in the front of the room. "Here she is, everyone. Meet the newest addition of our little family. Lieutenant Junior Grade Nena Triton. Go ahead and introduce yourself."
The new arrival wore the pink uniform of a female Atlantic Federation volunteer, Ezra seriously contemplated just what the brass at the Pentagon in Washington were thinking by going with a color scheme like that, but he couldn't deny the girl wore it well. The jacket clung to her perfectly shaped, hourglass figure, accentuating a pair of large, shapely breasts, the sleeves were ripped off three quarters of the way down. The tight white shorts showed off a firm, well toned rear end, and long legs covered by black thigh high stockings, capped off by a pair of dark brown ankle-length boots.
She snapped to attention, offering a crisp salute. "Lieutenant Junior Grade Nena Triton reporting for duty, Vice Admiral Lamperouge!" The redhead chirped. "I'm looking forward to working with all of you." Introductions were made all around, and everyone took a seat on the plush sofas and armchairs scattered about the lounge. Ezra tentatively took a seat next to Nena, who's legs folded in a very provocative manner, and she would occasionally flash a gaze at him."
"Let's get the pertinent questions out of the way first." Takachi said, having taken a seat across from Nena. "Where are you coming to us from, Ensign?"
Immediately a frown marred her very attractive features, clearly some bad memories were being dredged up. Regardless, Nena shared her story. "I used to be Special Operations, Captain Murakumo, was it? I had a falling out with a few members of my old unit. Mostly because one of them couldn't keep his hands to himself. I took offense to that so I might have kicked him in the balls, and then stomped them a few more times just for good measure." All the men winced at this their legs instinctively tightening a little. The women of the squadron, on the other hand all gave slight nods of approval.
"I imagine it still got you in a tremendous amount of trouble, Ensign." Nathan remarked. His eyes hardening just slightly. "Even though I'm vehemently against sexual harassment of any kind. You still assaulted a superior officer. That's a serious offense."
"You would not be wrong, Captain Anderson." Some of her playful demeanor returned as she turned to look at Ezra, winking at him, which elicited a quiet gasp from the young pilot. "I was looking at a court martial and a dishonorable discharge. Luckily my former commanding officer managed to smooth things over with the higher ups. And instead I was transferred out." She folded her arms under her ample chest. "I'm hoping I can make a fresh start here."
"We're all about second chances, Ensign Triton." Mark offered. "As long as you work hard and do as you're told. Then I don't forsee any problems."
"What about your mobile suit situation?" Takachi asked. "I'm certain we could get you a Windam if needed. Being we're considered an elite unit, we get first pick of the best equipment."
"Oh, I've already got that covered, Captain Anderson." She grinned. "I've actually got something better than a Windam. I'm fortunate enough to have a Gundam." This made everyone take notice. While the Windam was certainly the best mobile suit the Earth Alliance currently had at its disposal. There was no denying the power of having a Gundam on their side, as Patriot had already shown during the nuclear strike. The idea of having two of the mighty war machines in their ranks was nothing to take be dismissive of.
Nena clearly was aware of this as well. "That's right, I am proud to say I'm the pilot of the GAT-X506 Vajra Gundam. It was an older model that Atlantic Federation Research and Development had produced after the end of BV One. It got snapped up by Project Reaver and revamped with technology taken from Freedom and Justice. I know you have Admiral Lamperouge's Patriot, but a little extra firepower is never a bad thing, if you ask me. Am I right?" she directed that question at Ezra, who shrunk down in his seat a little bit. His gaze hadn't deviated from her once. He wasn't sure what it was about her, but it was anything but unpleasant.
The redhead had sensed it as well. So she turned to face Ezra, batting her eyelashes cutely. "So enough about me, what about you?" Nena's voice dripped with sexuality, and Ezra's hormones were raging at a mile a minute. He could just sit there, nodding dumbly, while the rest of his squadmates looked on with bemusement.
"Uhhh." was all Ezra could manage, the connections between his brain and mouth effectively shut down. Nena's delicate, bell like giggle rang in the air as she gently ran delicately manicured fingers along his chin. "Oh, you're cute! I think I'm going to enjoy this after all." She stood up, yawning. "If it's all the same to you, I've had a long trip and I'd like to get some rest. See you later!" She chimed, winking while throwing up a victory sign, before sauntering out the door.
Ezra was still sitting there, mouth agape, before Taylor sighed, walking over to smack him upside the back of the head. "Dwah!" He cried out, before glaring at Taylor. "What gives?"
"Someone had to hit your reset button. Considering you were sitting there like an idiot." Taylor said in her usual snarky monotone. "Seriously, any longer and i'm certain you would following her like a lost little puppy."
"What are you talking about?" Ezra said.
"Our newest arrival…" Asher smirked.
"…Had you totally wrapped around her finger and you didn't even recognize it!" Alyssa finished.
Ezra thought about it for a moment, blinked twice, before it finally hit him. He let out an annoyed grunt. "Oh…shit. She was flirting with me, wasn't she?" He brought his hand up to his forehead, trying to hide his embarrassment. "Oh, way to crash and burn on that one!"
"Yeah, you kind of blew it there." Takachi quipped.
"Don't feel too bad about it, Lieutenant Kanitz. You'll have plenty of other times to impress Miss Triton." Nathan did his best to hide his amusement. "Just try to remember to do it on your own time and not when we're in the middle of combat, all right? That's a fast way to getting the both of you killed. I can only imagine the paperwork that would result."
"Maybe she'll blow in your ear next time, that way you'll take the hint." Asher commented snidely, and everyone started laughing.
The young pilot just grunted as Taylor patted him on the shoulder. Ezra got the impression they wouldn't let him forget this for quite some time. But still, he would certainly enjoy spending more time getting to know Nena better. He got the feeling there was more to that girl than she was letting on. He always did enjoy a challenge.
(December 26th, C.E. 73, Morgenroete, Onogoro, Orb Union)
"You had better give me a good reason for getting me out of bed this early in the morning, Anthony." Sebastian groaned as he trudged down the halls after his brother and Kuro. It was three am when he had gotten an emergency phone call from the Arctic White Wolf, telling him to come straight to Morgoenroete, no questions asked. So he reluctantly did so, trying everything not to wake up Lacus or the children. "The deployment's in two days and you know how I get when I don't have a full night's sleep."
Anthony looked nonplussed. "Relax, Pup. This has everything to do with the deployment." This seemed to placate the Storm Wolf some, and the three men continued their trek through the inner workings of the Morgenroete facility. It was apparent to Sebastian they were now heading toward the underground ship docks. Where the Archangel and Minerva were currently docked. "I wanted you to see this, but I also don't need to say, keep this to yourself for right now." The three men stopped in front of a viewing window and Sebastian understood.
It was a submarine, one of the largest he had ever seen, a very sleek and deadly looking machine with a low slung conning tower. What caught his attention was how the front third of the ship was open, revealing what Sebastian knew were linear catapults for mobile suits. He whistled in appreciation, before looking to Kuro and Anthony, both with expressions that could only be described as a couple of very proud parents. "Okay gentlemen, color me impressed. So, we have a submarine now, I'm cool with that."
"Oh, it's an insult to just call this a mere submarine, Pup!" Anthony exclaimed, more than pleased to show off. "Say hello to the ONS Seawolf, my friend! It's been one of my little projects over the last two years." He couldn't hide the grin. "Now I know that submarine carriers are nothing new, but the Seawolf isn't your mama's Vosgulov. She's special."
The Storm Wolf just chortled. "Okay, Anthony, you can settle down. I get it, you're very proud of your handiwork, and deservedly so. It definitely seems like you really put your heart and soul into it's construction." He then resumed looking at it through the observation window. "So where did she come from?"
It was the Kuro stepped forward. "I can provide that answer, General. The base design for the Seawolf was actually thought up by my father. No matter what I feel about his political ideals, I will not deny that he was an absolute genius when it came to engineering. He was quite the visionary, predicting that mobile suits would become the main instrument of war." He looked on fondly at the Seawolf, sitting its docking slip. He was clearly as proud as Anthony at the accomplishment. "Dad reasoned a submarine would make a good carrier for them. So he came up with the Raijin-class. That's what it would have been called had it gone into production. However, he left Orb before he could get started on it. So it was relegated to the archives until I pulled it out."
"Pup, you remember that the Archangel underwent that major refit after the last war's end which gave it underwater capability." Anthony stated. "I was curious as to where Kuro got it from, and he showed me the blueprints." He let out a low chuckle. "Needless to say it was love at first sight."
"I hope Loretta doesn't hear about this. She wouldn't take kindly to you cheating on her with a giant slab of floating metal." Sebastian snarked, causing his companions to snicker. The Storm Wolf finally stopped laughing and regained his composure. "All joking aside, I have no problem with having a vessel like this at our disposal. What exactly can the Seawolf do for us, gentlemen? Tell me about some of her capabilities."
Kuro was all too eager to begin rattling off the specifications of the new boat. "As far as weapons capacity go, the Seawolf has six torpedo tubes. It also has an eight-tube vertical launch system capable of carrying cruise missiles, and three large silos capable of firing submarine launched ballistic missiles."
Sebastian whistled again. "So this thing can carry nukes?"
"It can, not to mention it has a couple of other surprises as well." Anthony spoke, folding his arms, and continuing to gaze out on his masterpiece. "And of course, she carries a full complement of ten mobile suits. I intended for her to be the designated carrier for my team when we were all planetside. The Seawolf was also designed with special forces in mind, it has two docking bays on the underside, each carrying a small minisub that can deploy a full squad of commandos. Capping it all off, my baby is built with full command and control facility to help improve battlefield coordination."
"Color me impressed, guys. I really do like what I see." Sebastian remarked. "I suppose if ZAFT can have submarine carriers, we can as well. It should give the Earth Forces something to think about as well."
"Uh, about that, there's something else you need to know, Storm." The Supreme Ace let out a quiet groan. He recognized the tone in Kuro's voice and could tell what he was about to say was nothing good. He motioned with his hand, just wanting to hear it. "The Earth Alliance have their own submarine carriers too. It was back when Ghina was still in charge, he had full access to our father's records as well. The deal he brokered between us and the Atlantic Federation, the one that led to the creation of the original Gundams, he threw in the plans for the Raijin as a bonus, that way they would have a counter to the Vosgulov."
"How many?" was all Sebastian asked.
Anthony swallowed hard. "That's the real kicker. We estimate the Earth Alliance have five of them in the works. Three for the Atlantic Federation. Two being built by the Eurasian Federation, and the Republic of East Asia is developing one of their own. I guess they couldn't resist having something like this."
"Will these Earth Alliance submarines have the same capabilities as the Seawolf?" Sebastian's question was met with a firm double head shake.
"Not all of them." Anthony responded. "The original design of the Raijin included the VLS and the underside docking bays, they were made to carry amphibious mobile suits. But they shouldn't have the SLBM silos, not that it wouldn't stop them from adding them in, or the command center. That was my own inclusion to the design."
"Not to mention the Raijin was originally meant to only carry eight mobile suits in its main hangar bay." Kuro included. "Including the command center, the ballistic missile silos, and the extra room for his full squadron, tacked on an extra one hundred fifty meters to the sub, bringing it's total length to four hundred and fifty. The Earth Alliance may make its own changes and additions to the design, but I can say that any one of them would be more than a match for a Vosgulov. It's a far superior design. No big surprise considering my old man created it in the first place. He believed in quality above all else."
"Although any of them would come up short against the Seawolf!" Anthony's green eyes blazed in quiet fury. "Her fangs would tear those cheap imitations to shreds!"
"I'm glad you're so passionate about it, Anthony." Sebastian said, patting him on the shoulder. "So I'm guessing you'll be flying off her instead of the Archangel?"
"No, Loretta and I will deploy with you. Once the rest of the team arrive from space, Rachel will take command of the sub. And follow after us." Anthony said, a knowing gleam in his eye. "After all, we wolves always keep a few of our own to watch from a distance, just in case anything goes wrong, right?"
Sebastian nodded, a small smile forming on his face. "You always did cover my back, bro. I can't imagine you stopping now. I'm a little disheartened to know that the Earth Alliance has its own sub carriers now, but the Seawolf ensures they won't totally dominate under the ocean. I'm eager to see how well it hunts."
"You and me both, Pup." Anthony sighed, putting an arm around Sebastian's shoulder. "You and me both."
(December 28th, C.E. 73, Onogoro, Orb Union)
The fated day had come, and it was time for the ONS Archangel, and the PSV Minerva to finally leave the shelter of the island nation, and set out once again into the always murky fog of war. But they would not be going alone into the abyss, for they would accompanied by the ONS Takemikazuchi, the pride of the Orb Naval Defense Forces, a massive trimaran aircraft carrier, capable of holding up to sixty mobile suits, mostly Murasames and the M47 Takemikazuchis of Dawn Squadron. Yui stood on the flight deck of the giant vessel, feeling the wind flow through her thick dark brown locks. Her faithful machine was down on the hangar deck, but it wouldn't be long before they were in the fight.
"So this is it, huh?" Kazusa remarked as she and the other girls walked up, her straight raven hair dancing back and forth with each graceful step. Her arms folded across her chest. "We're actually taking the fight to the Earth Alliance. I know I'll probably get a lot of flak for saying this, but I think it's about time we threw in with someone. I want to get some payback on the Earth Forces for everything they've done to us." Her delicate eyebrows narrowed. "I never have forgiven the Atlantic Federation for what happened to Toshiro two years ago."
"I'm with you, Zusa." Aki chirped. "I still remember that slime bag Azrael going on about how Orb had to join the Earth Alliance because it was our 'sacred duty' as a fellow nation of Earth." She rolled her eyes at those last words. "I understand just wanting to be left alone, but the Atlantic Federation has been way too long in getting in everyone's face. It's time to show them we're not going to be intimidated. And that's with a boot right in their collective faces!"
"Lady Cagalli doesn't feel that way." Izumi pointed out, struggling to keep her pigtails blowing into her face. "From what I heard, she's been quite reluctant over this whole alliance with the PLANTs. It does kind of go against everything The Attha Family believes in. Let's face it, the whole neutrality and pacifism thing did come from her great-grandfather, Lord Hashirama. It's been one of the guiding principles of our nation for the last sixty years."
"Yui, what's your take on this? How do you feel about current political situation?" Shimako asked, not wanting it to degrade into a fight.
Yui said nothing, just running a hand through her hair before turning to face her friends."I think we're wasting time worrying about things like that. It's way over our heads. We should leave the politics to the politicians. I can certainly do without it. We're soldiers first and foremost. Our job is to fight and protect the people of the United Emirates of Orb. That is our primary duty and responsibility." The girls all just sighed.
"Typical Yui." Shimako said. "It figures you would say that. Always have to be the selfless one." It was then she caught sight of Kyoko walking up, followed by the Astray Trio. "Officer on deck!" She barked, snapping to attention and offering a salute, which all the other members of Dawn Squadron promptly mirrored, before falling into a line.
"As you all were." Kyoko said, a light smile on her face, looking to Asagi and the others. "I have to admit ladies, we've done pretty well in training our little cadre, don't you think? I must say I'm very proud of them all." All the girls stood up a little straighter. But then her expression became serious. "That being said, I don't want any of you girls taking unnecessary risks! I expect everyone of you to come home alive." The smile returned as she zeroed in Yui, glomping her. "Especially you, my little Yui-chan! I would be so upset if anything to my favorite cousin now, wouldn't I?"
"Kyoko! Do you really have to do that?" Yui whined, already hearing the laughter coming from her squadmates. Shimako and Aki were both giggling, while Izumi struggled to hide her laughter, and Kazusa just looked on at her friend and rival with bemusement as her cousin hung all over. Yui fervently prayed that Kyoko wouldn't start feeling her up or anything.
The blue haired commander just smiled, rubbing her cheek against Yui's. "Aw, you're always so cute when you get all flustered, my little Jellyui! But what can I say?" Kyoko rested her chin on Yui's shoulder as she took her into a sisterly hug. "I love you so much. You've always been more than my cousin. You're my little sister." Yui just sighed, returning Kyoko's embrace. It wasn't a lie the two of them had been close ever since childhood.
Asagi then cleared her throat. "While I'm glad that we can all bear witness to this loving family scene. I thought you had something to address to the entire squadron, Colonel?" The two girls untangled themselves.
"Uh, of course, Major Caldwell." She straightened herself, trying to look all businesslike. "I'll just say to all of you. Fight hard, and stay alive. I want all of us to come back here together. Is that understood?" The girls all responded with a hearty 'yes ma'am!' saluting.
"You're dismissed, ladies. We ship out in another hour." The girls dispersed, leaving Kyoko alone.
(Same time, Minerva)
Over on the Minerva, Stellar was currently sitting in the corner of the pilot's lounge, currently taking stock of her current situation. Now that she wasn't regularly getting her memories erased, she was starting to grow and mature mentally, now being closer to actual age of sixteen. She had long accepted that she wouldn't be able to return to Phantom Pain any time soon. A part of her would miss Neo, Sting, and Auel, and even Daniel and the Headhunters as well. The sniper trio had been aloof, but at least treated them with a degree of respect. But on the other hand, Stellar had gained so much by failing her mission. She had met her parents, and found a new purpose. It was all quite freeing on many levels.
"Excuse me?" She came out of her trance to see Juliana standing in front of her. "So you're the one who took the Gaia at Armory One, huh?" The violet haired beauty spoke, more than a little disdain in her voice. "I don't know what Captain Gladys was thinking, allowing you on board this ship. But let me make one thing clear, you turn on us, and I'll kill you myself. Just remember!" She stalked out of the room. Stellar caught sight of Rey, currently sitting across the room engrossed in a novel. There was something about him that made her feel unsettled.
Stellar headed back down the hall to her quarters. She caught sight of her reflection in the polished surface of the bulkhead. She cocked her head to the side, taking note of her new attire. The red uniform actually looked quite striking on her, it reminded her of Flay's hair. She had gone for a white pleated skirt, and white knee high boots with thigh high stockings the same deep shade of purple as Kira's eyes. The blonde Extended smiled. At least she would be able to honor her parents in a small way. She was so engrossed in admiring herself in the makeshift mirror, she didn't notice Shinn come around the corner in a hurry. The two of them plowed into each other, tumbling to the ground in a heap. "Ow! Hey watch it!" She whined.
"Oh, I am so sorry!" Shinn said, desperately trying to untangle himself from her. It was then red eyes met purple. It took a moment for it to register in their heads. And then it hit him. "Wait a minute, you're that girl from Armory One!" He paled, remember in vivid detail what had happened that October day so long ago! He was off the floor and on his feet, bowing straight at the waist. "I am really sorry about that! Did I…accidentally feel you up this time?"
"No, but my rear end kind of hurts when I fell." Stellar said, rubbing it through the thick white fabric of her skirt. An awkward silence followed. Neither of them were sure what to say. before Shinn finally held his arm out.
"I suppose proper introductions are in order. I'm Lieutenant Shinn Asuka, pilot of the Impulse Gundam."
"Ensign Stellar Loussier, formerly of the 81st Independent Mobile Battalion, Phantom Pain. And now the pilot of the Gaia Gundam here on the Minerva." She put her hands behind her back, looking off to one side. "I suppose it's a little late to say this, but uh, sorry for killing your friends back on Armory One. It really was nothing personal, just doing my job."
Shinn's eyes narrowed slightly, now remembering how Stellar and her two comrades tore through the ZAFT personnel, riddling them with bullets and carving them with knives, before making off with the Gundams. "If that's the case, then why are you here on this ship?"
The blonde shrunk back a little. "Because I wanted to do some good in this world, and it was either remain here or get back in the fight. General Connor spoke with Captain Gladys, and she was okay with it." Stellar bowed her head. "It's not like I had much to go back to in the Atlantic Federation anyway. Extended like me are a dime a dozen. We're little more than cheap tools to be used and discarded. I'm fairly certain they've already assigned my unit a replacement."
This made Shinn feel a slight pang of sympathy. She hadn't asked to be thrown into this life, and was doing the best she could with what she had. "I'm sorry to hear that." He said, scratching the back of his head. "Well, if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask. We're all here to help you out."
"I appreciate that." Stellar smiled, before continuing onto her quarters. At least she had made one new friend on the Minerva.
(Same time, Archangel)
Both Meyrin and Lunamaria were just as nervous as Stellar had been as they made their way down the halls of the Archangel. "Can you believe we're actually here, sis?" The young Hawke sister asked. "We're actually serving on the most legendary ship in the entire Cosmic Era!" She had been surprised to learn she had also been tapped to be a CIC officer, but Meyrin reasoned that the Storm Wolf had pulled some strings in that regard to let her serve with her older sister. They entered the elevator that led up to the bridge. Neither of them knew what to say as they set foot into the pulsing nerve center for the white ship.
Murrue, currently sitting in her seat turned at the sound of footsteps, smiling at sight of the the new arrivals. Training kicked in, and the Hawke sisters snapped to attention, both offering the best salutes possible for their new commanding officer. "Lieutenant Lunamaria Hawke, reporting for duty, Admiral Ramius!"
"Private Meyrin Hawke, doing like wise, Admiral!" Both sounded of crisp professionalism.
Murrue stood up, returning the gesture. "As you both were." She said in a relaxed voice. "Welcome aboard the Archangel, ladies. I'm glad to have both of you. Private Hawke, go ahead and take your station. Captain Badgiurel and Lieutenant Commander Haw will help you with any questions you may have about how the systems work." Meyrin nodded, looking to her sister as she went down the ramp into the confines of the Combat Information Center. "As for you, Lieutenant, I suppose you'll want to get your new mobile suit prepared. I heard you got a Gundam."
"Yes ma'am. the Phoenix. The name is rather fitting, if you ask me." Luna said. "Rest assured, as long as I serve aboard your vessel, I won't let any harm come to it!"
"I appreciate your enthusiasm, Lieutenant. But I'll be just as happy that you stay alive. Though we may wear different uniforms. You're still part of this crew, and in turn a part of this family. So no unnecessary risks, is that understood?"
That struck a chord with Luna. Because of everything this crew had been through, they had bonded on a very deep level. A level that hadn't been reached on the Minerva, but it was already beginning to form. Although Luna and Meyrin were now on the Archangel. So it was time to dive in. So she simply stood up tall and said, "Loud and clear, Ma'am!" She almost skipped off the bridge, but reasoned she didn't want to make a bad first impression.
With all preparations done, and the three ships squared away. it was time to shove off. The officers and crew of the three ships who weren't needed for current operations were standing at the rails of their respective vessels, and at the head of the line, The Storm Wolf of Jachin Due himself. Lieutenant General Sebastian Andrew Connor stood on the forward deck of the Archangel in full uniform. A radio in hand, as Kumiko gave them a farewell speech. "To the crews of the Archangel, Minvera, and Takemikazuchi, you head out into the unknown, but rest assured we will be thinking of you at all times. May Haumea's spirit guide and protect you on your journey!"
"We accept your kind words, Madame Representative." With that he turned, snapping to attention as he offered a formal salute to where Kumiko, Yukira, Arashi, and Mina were standing in the observation deck. All four responded with a salute of their own. And with that the three vessels left the dock, and began sailing out into the Pacific Ocean.
(January 6th, C.E. 74, Sahaku Manor, Orb Union)
Yukimura sighed, looking out at the overcast skies hovering over his country. It had been over a week since the Archangel and her cohorts had left on their deployment to the Mediterranean. Which meant that Orb was now lacking some of its strongest defenders. Which for the Sahaku Patriarch was good news indeed. He had been busy meeting with some associates of his, and now it was time to make a move on the homefront. He removed the old style telephone sitting on his desk, dialing a specific number.
"Hello there. I know it's been quite some time since we last talked, and that we have little love for each other. However, I'm willing to bury the hatchet if you at least hear me out. I've returned to Orb, and resumed my position as head of the family. I've begun rallying other like minded individuals who seek to expel any unwanted influences. I think it would be a powerful message if you came back to stand with us. I know you want to regain everything Uzumi took from you." He smirked deviously. "Good, I'm glad to hear we're on the same page then. I'll be eager to welcome you back home."
He sighed, putting the phone down as he went back to looking out his window. Yukimura shook his head in pity. "Oh Unato, you were always so gullible. I just need to tell you what you wanted to hear and you practically leap into my net. There's no way in hell that Kumiko would ever let her position be threatened, and if the rumors are true, then Lamperouge's little posse might try and intervene as well. Odds are you and your little band of fanatics will die in a spectacular fashion. Either way, I still win."
