The tension in the air was suffocating as Kuri sat in Hatori's quiet, dimly lit office. The cold chill of the Sohma main house seeped into her skin, making her shiver despite herself. Across from her, Hatori's presence was as heavy as the atmosphere, his sharp, detached gaze fixed on her.
"You understand, don't you?" Hatori said, his tone even but unyielding. "Your involvement with the Sohma family is dangerous. You should leave before it's too late."
Kuri clenched her hands in her lap. "I can't just leave. I… I care about them."
Hatori's expression didn't waver. "That's precisely why you must go. Caring only makes it worse. It makes the curse stronger."
"Is that why you erased her memories?" Kuri snapped, her voice trembling as her gaze darted to the photo frame on his desk. The picture of Mana stared back at her, a bittersweet smile frozen in time.
Hatori's cold facade cracked slightly, his eyes narrowing. "You know nothing about that."
"I know enough," Kuri said, her voice breaking. "She loved you, didn't she? And you erased her memories because of the curse. Is that what you want to do to me?"
The silence that followed was unbearable. Hatori's hands curled into fists on the desk, his calm veneer threatening to shatter.
"I want to protect you," he said finally, his voice low and firm. "Even if it means doing something you might hate me for."
Before Kuri could respond, the door to the office burst open with a loud bang. Kuri gasped, her head whipping around to see Haru standing in the doorway.
But this wasn't the calm, composed Haru she knew. His gray eyes burned with fury, and his body radiated a dangerous energy that made the room feel smaller. His Black side had taken over.

"Hatori," Haru growled, stepping into the room with measured but threatening steps. "Get away from her."
Hatori raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed by the display. "This isn't your concern, Haru."
"The hell it isn't," Haru snapped, moving to stand protectively in front of Kuri. "I won't let you erase her memories."
Kuri stared up at him, wide-eyed. "Haru-kun…"
Haru didn't look at her, his focus locked entirely on Hatori. "She's not leaving, and you're not touching her."
Hatori sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose as if dealing with a petulant child. "You're overreacting. I haven't done anything."
"Yet," Haru spat. "I know how this works. You'll wait until Akito tells you to, and then you'll erase her like she never existed."
"Do you think I enjoy doing that?" Hatori's voice rose slightly, his calm demeanor fraying. "Do you think I want to be the one to take away someone's memories?"
"Then don't," Haru said, his voice dangerously low. "You don't have to do this. You don't have to hurt her."
Hatori's eyes flicked to Kuri, who was trembling behind Haru, and then back to Haru. "This isn't your decision to make."
"No," Haru said, his voice shaking with emotion. "But it's hers. And I'll make sure she gets to keep it."

"Kuri, let's go," Haru said, reaching back to take her hand. His touch was firm but gentle, grounding her in the chaos of the moment.
"But—" Kuri started, glancing at Hatori.
"Now," Haru said, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Kuri hesitated for only a moment before nodding. She allowed Haru to pull her to her feet, her heart pounding as they left the room. Hatori didn't stop them, but his gaze followed them out, heavy with unspoken words.
As they stepped into the cold night air, Haru's grip on her hand tightened. His Black side hadn't faded, his shoulders tense and his breathing ragged.
"Haru-kun," Kuri said softly, trying to calm him. "I'm okay."
He stopped abruptly, turning to face her. His eyes, usually so calm and steady, were filled with anguish. "You're not okay. He could've—"
"But he didn't," she interrupted, placing her free hand over his. "You were there. You protected me."
For a moment, Haru said nothing, his gaze searching hers. Finally, he pulled her into a fierce hug, his arms wrapping around her like a shield. "I was so scared," he admitted, his voice muffled against her hair. "Scared he'd take you away from me."
Kuri's heart clenched, tears stinging her eyes. "I'm not going anywhere, Haru-kun. I promise."

Later, after they had returned to Kuri's cottage, Haru's Black side had subsided, leaving him quiet and introspective. He sat beside her on the couch, his hand resting over hers.
"Thank you," she said softly, breaking the silence.
"For what?" Haru asked, his voice still tinged with residual guilt"
"For protecting me," she said. "For always being there when I need you."
Haru shook his head. "I wasn't strong enough. I let Black take over."
"You were strong enough to come for me," Kuri said firmly, turning to face him. "That's all that matters."
Haru met her gaze, his eyes filled with a tenderness that made her heart ache. "I'll always come for you, Kuri. No matter what."
Her breath hitched, and for a moment, she couldn't speak. Then, with a shaky smile, she leaned her head against his shoulder. "I know."
Haru wrapped an arm around her, holding her close as the weight of the evening began to lift. In that quiet moment, surrounded by the warmth of his presence, Kuri felt truly safe.
