Chapter 51: "Priority: Lynk"

Hours passed as Kaian and Kristar charged the spell. The air grew heavy with magical energy, and the sigil above them shone brighter with each passing moment. Outside, the hostile forces remained unaware of the impending strike, their patrols routine and lackadaisical.

Ashley checked her gear one last time. The TACNet overlay displayed the positions of her team, each marked with a glowing blue dot. The plan was simple: once the barrier fell, they would storm the library, neutralize the defenders, and secure the central chamber where Kristar could work to take down the city-wide barrier.

"Ashley," Kaian said suddenly, his voice low but firm. "It's almost ready."

"How long?" she asked.

"Minutes," he replied. "When it happens, you'll know."

As the first rays of dawn touched the city, the sigil above Kaian and Kristar reached its peak, radiating a blinding light. With a final, forceful gesture, Kaian thrust his spear into the center of the sigil, releasing the stored energy in a single, concentrated burst.

The sky lit up as the spell struck the library's barrier. The shield shuddered, its shimmering surface rippling violently before collapsing in a cascade of light and sound. The ground trembled beneath their feet, and the once-quiet district erupted into chaos.

Ashley didn't hesitate. "Go, go, go!"

The 2nd Squad and PSC 1 moved as one, their advanced combat armor and weapons contrasting sharply with the medieval aesthetic of the city. Ashley led the charge, her rifle spitting precise bursts that cut down the stunned defenders. Kaian was at her side, his spear a blur as he dispatched enemies with inhuman speed.

O'Neill and Carter flanked the group, their movements efficient and coordinated. Carter's expertise with explosives proved invaluable as she cleared choke points with well-placed charges, while O'Neill provided covering fire, his sharp wit cutting through the comms chatter.

"Trolls on the left," Carter called out.

"Not for long," O'Neill replied, firing a grenade that detonated at the trolls' feet, sending them sprawling.

Inside the library, the resistance intensified. Archmages hurled fire and lightning at the team, their spells clashing with the SIF's advanced weaponry. Kristar moved with the group, her staff glowing as she countered the enemy's magic.

"Central chamber is up ahead!" she called out.

The team reached the central chamber, a vast, ornate space filled with shelves of ancient tomes and glowing crystals. Kristar wasted no time, moving to the center of the room to begin her work.

"We've got company!" Ashley called out as hostile forces flooded into the library. Minotaurs charged with bellowing roars, their axes gleaming, while soldiers formed ranks to block the team's escape.

"Hold the line!" Ashley commanded. "Kaian, cover the right! O'Neill, Carter, with me on the left!"

Kaian spun his spear in a wide arc, cutting down a trio of soldiers before driving the weapon into the ground. A shockwave of energy rippled outward, sending the remaining attackers flying.

O'Neill and Carter worked in tandem, their firepower keeping the advancing forces at bay. Carter deployed a series of automated turrets, their rapid-fire bursts adding to the chaos.

As the battle raged, Kristar worked with unyielding focus, her voice rising in a steady chant. The room around her glowed brighter, the air crackling with energy.

"I need more time!" she shouted.

"You'll have it!" Ashley replied, her voice resolute. "We're not losing this fight."

Kaian moved to the forefront, his spear glowing with celestial energy. "Let them come," he said, his voice calm but filled with an underlying fury. "They've already lost."

As Kristar worked tirelessly to dismantle the city's barrier, Ashley turned to Kaian. "We need to find Daniel. He's our other objective."

Kaian nodded. "The library is vast. If they're keeping him here, it'll be in a secure location—likely underground."

Ashley toggled her comms. "Carter, O'Neill, I need you two to hold this position with Kristar. Kaian and I will lead the search for Dr. Jackson."

"You've got it, Commander," O'Neill replied, laying down suppressive fire. "Just don't let him start a lecture until this fight's over."

Kaian smirked faintly at the comment before turning serious. "I'll sense his presence. Apostles have their uses beyond combat."

Kaian closed his eyes, his golden irises briefly eclipsed by a radiant glow. "I can feel him," he said after a moment. "He's below us, to the east."

Ashley motioned for two members of the squad to accompany them. "Keep it tight. Hostiles could be anywhere."

They moved swiftly through the lower levels of the library, navigating corridors lined with ancient texts and illuminated by flickering magical sconces. The further they descended, the thicker the air became, heavy with the residue of powerful spells.

Kaian halted at a reinforced door etched with glowing runes. "He's behind here."

Ashley examined the door, her visor scanning its magical structure. "Locked and warded. Can you break it?"

Kaian raised his spear. "Not a problem."

With a single, precise strike, his spear shattered the magical barrier, the runes disintegrating into harmless sparks. Ashley stepped forward, her weapon raised as the door creaked open.

Inside, they found Daniel Jackson restrained within a glowing magical circle, his wrists and ankles bound by enchanted chains. He looked up as they entered, a mix of relief and exhaustion on his face.

"Took you long enough," he said weakly, his voice tinged with wry humor.

"Dr. Jackson," Ashley said, moving to his side. "We're here to get you out."

Kaian approached the chains, examining them closely. "These are binding spells. Clever, but not enough to stop me."

With a sharp twist of his spear, Kaian disrupted the spell, the chains dissolving into a cascade of sparks. Daniel staggered slightly as he stood, but Ashley caught his arm.

"Can you walk?" she asked.

"I'll manage," Daniel replied, his focus shifting to Kaian. "You must be the apostle. I've read about you."

"Let's save the introductions for later," Kaian said, his tone dry. "This place isn't safe."

As they made their way back to the central chamber, the sounds of battle grew louder. Carter's turrets were still firing, and O'Neill's voice crackled over the comms. "Ashley, you better have found him, because we're running out of time here!"

"On our way," Ashley replied. "Hold them off a little longer."

Kaian took the lead, his spear slicing through any enemies that blocked their path. Despite his exhaustion, Daniel kept pace, his determination evident.

When they reached the central chamber, O'Neill turned, a grin breaking across his face. "Danny boy! Glad you could join us."

"Good to see you too, Jack," Daniel said. "What's the plan?"

"We hold until the cavalry arrives" Ashley replies.

-Rondel Inn-

The mission changed when Agent Shelly called for help. Squad One was now on its way to recover the stranded agent.

The streets of Rondel were eerily quiet in the dawn light, save for the distant sounds of fighting elsewhere in the city. Smoke curled from shattered buildings, and the smell of burning wood and stone lingered in the air. Commander Ava led her squad with practiced ease, every step deliberate and soundless as they navigated the chaos.

The two SAT8s flanked the group, their advanced sensors scanning every corner and alley for threats. Behind them, Empress Pina, Prince Diabo, and their attachment of 9 Imperial Legionnaires moved in formation, visibly tense but steady under Knight Grey's leadership.

"Rob, status?" Ava asked, her voice low but carrying authority through the comms.

"Drone feed shows minimal hostiles in our path, Commander. Shelly's signal is strong. Two blocks northeast, collapsed structure on the market edge," Rob replied calmly. "She's hiding between the rubbles. She looks weak, Commander."

"Jimmy, be ready to stabilize her. SAT8-2 will assist with the extraction," Ava instructed.

"Yes, ma'am," Jimmy replied, his medkit secured and ready.

The squad moved in perfect sync, their advanced HUDs displaying a tactical overlay of the surrounding area. The SAT8 units walked with mechanical precision, their weapons primed but inactive, waiting for commands.

As the team neared the market, Rob held up a hand, signaling a halt. "Thermals indicate scattered movement on the western side. Looks like remnants of militia, disorganized. No immediate threat but worth keeping an eye on."

Ava nodded. "Maintain visual. No unnecessary engagements. We're in and out."

The group pressed forward, their movements deliberate and efficient. Pina and Diabo followed closely, their Imperial guard forming a disciplined line to protect their flanks.

Upon reaching the market, the collapsed structure came into view, a crumbled tower leaning precariously against an adjacent building.

"There," Rob said, marking Shelly's position on their HUDs.

"Jimmy, SAT8-2, move in," Ava ordered. "David, cover the west side. Rob, deploy drones for overwatch."

Jimmy moved quickly but without haste, his posture calm as he approached the rubble. SAT8-2 followed, its highly advanced frame work effortlessly navigating the debris.

Jimmy knelt beside Shelly, whose armor was battered and covered in dust. Her breathing was shallow, but her eyes flickered open as Jimmy checked her vitals.

"Agent Shelly, we're Sierra 5," he said evenly. "We're here to get you out."

Shelly managed a faint smile. "Took your time."

Jimmy's tone didn't waver. "Vitals are stable but weak. Possible internal injuries. Her suit is low on mass, I'm gonna give her the juice and giver her suit more nanite, should keep her in the fight for the time being." He reports via the comms.

"SAT8-2," Jimmy continued, "clear this rubble carefully. Replicate mass for agent Shelly's suit."

The robot extended its mechanical arms, lifting debris with precision. Within moments, Shelly was free. Jimmy secured the nanite mass from the SAT8 and injected it into Shelly's suit. She instantly got back on her feed as if seconds ago she wasn't barely alive.

"Shelly is secure," Jimmy reported. "We're ready to move."

"Rob, update," Ava said.

"Uh-oh" Rob said.

"Uh-oh?" Ava replied, confused.

"Lynk made his move, the dark fog is beginning to spread. It bringing all the dead corpses back to life and it's spreading from the slum areas." Rob reports calmly.

Shelly checked her HUD for the drones' feed "They have a lot of darklings, we're going to need reinforcement."

"Ashley how is it going? It's about to get real real bad out here" Ava asked.

Ashley tightened her grip on her rifle, her eyes scanning the horizon. The battle in the library had been intense, but the real threat loomed beyond.

"We're holding the line," Ashley replied, her voice steady despite the chaos around her. "Kaian's working on the barrier, Kristar's almost finished. We're in the final stretch."

She caught a glimpse of the battle raging behind her, where O'Neill and Carter were still keeping the remaining attackers at bay, their firepower relentless. "We're holding, for now."

On the comms, Shelly's voice came through, raspy but filled with urgency. " The fog's spreading, and it's bringing the dead with it. We've got no time."

Ava cursed under her breath. "Dammit. We need to wrap this up quickly, or it's going to be a disaster for all of us." She paused, her mind working quickly. "Lynk want to destroy the city and kill all the mages here, it is not in our interest or the galaxy's to let that happen. You must get that barrier down!" Ava pressed the last words strongly.

Ashley glanced at the central chamber. Kristar was almost finished, she could feel the hum of the city's barrier starting to weaken. The once-shimmering force field was flickering, barely holding on. The pressure on her shoulders was palpable.

"We're almost done, commander," Ashley responded, a deep resolve in her voice. "We're this close. We've got Daniel, and we're finishing this fight. The barrier's going down soon. Give us sometimes."

"Time, huh?" Ava replied, a wry laugh in her tone despite the tension. "A luxury that we don't have, but we'll try. And stay safe."

Ashley nodded, though she knew Ava couldn't see her. The weight of the situation was suffocating, but the mission was clear.

"Got it. You do the same."

A shudder ran through the ground beneath her as a sudden surge of magic rippled through the air. She turned, her eyes narrowing as she saw the dark fog beginning to roll in. The very air seemed to twist and warp, the edges of reality distorting with the power of whatever Lynk had unleashed.

"Shit," O'Neill muttered, glancing up. "That's the fog. It's spreading fast."

"Everyone, focus up!" Ashley shouted, rallying her squad. "Getting that barrier down is our only chance. Kristar, Kaian, sitrep?"

Kaian's voice was calm, but there was a sense of urgency in it. "We're almost there. The sigil is about to collapse completely. The city-wide barrier is coming down."

As the dark fog fill up the chamber, a brief silent moment was ensued by the screams of the once attackers of the squad. Enemy mages and combatants rushed towards the SIF but not to fight. They were running away from something dark and twisted. The reanimated darklings and dead corpses followed right behind them.

With no where to run, they stopped right in front of the SIFs, looking terrified and hopeless.

"If you want to live through this, form up and fight with us!" Ashley commanded them.

As they rushed to form up with the team, Ashley motioned for her squad to push forward. "Hold your ground! We're not losing this now."

As Kaian and Kristar stood together, the sigil above them pulsed one final time, and with a burst of light, the barrier shattered into nothingness. The magical pressure lifted, and the sky above them seemed to breathe again.

As the final tremor of the spell resonated through the city, the air cleared, and the oppressive barrier that had once held Rondel in a suffocating grip vanished. The once-shimmering force field flickered for a moment before disintegrating into nothingness, opened the chaotic city to the outside worlds.

The thick, swirling mist spreading out from the old temple in the slums district seemed to pulse with malevolent energy, carrying with it the twisted souls of the dead. Outside of the city, the mixed forces of the Empire and UNE had begun to pour into the city, their advanced vehicles and transports roaring overhead as they deployed along the streets.

"We need to start moving!" Ashley barked into the comms, her voice sharp with authority. "We'll get overwhelmed if we stay here, lets head for the Rondel Inn and regroup with the 1st Squad!"

The UNE ground forces, eight mechanized marine divisions, moved into position with tanks and infantry, their advanced weapons of war hummed as they positioned themselves along the walls of the city. Behind them, the Rose Order's transport ships soared overhead, their graceful arcs cutting through the sky as they deployed alongside the UNE forces. The sight of the two factions fighting together, united in the face of such overwhelming odds, was a beacon of hope for the people of Rondel. Even the Imperial forces, under Knight Grey's leadership, began to push forward with renewed vigor, their once-tense formation now tightening as they joined the fray.

The fighting forces within the city, who had once fought bitterly against one another, now rallied together under a common cause. Enemy combatants, many of them mercenaries, some forced into service by the power of Lynk's dark magic, gritted their teeth and made their stand alongside the UNE and Imperial troops. A sense of unity, however fleeting, formed in that brief, chaotic moment.

Ave's voice cut through the air. "This is our chance! Hold the line! Push the darklings back!" she said as regiments of Rose Order troops carried by UNE transports were being deploy at her position.

As the first wave of darklings charged, the combined might of the allied forces surged forward. The mechanized marine units unleashed a devastating barrage of firepower, their tanks rolling forward, cutting through the enemy like a blade through paper. O'Neill and Carter moved quickly alongside their new allies, their weapons spitting bullets that tore through the reanimated corpses with precision.

"Let's give them hell!" Carter shouted, her voice tinged with excitement as her turrets sprayed fire into the advancing undead.

Kristar's hands moved in a flurry of gestures, a barrier of shimmering light appearing just in time to intercept the first wave of darkling forces, sending them scattering in all directions. Kaian's spear crackled with magical energy as he advanced, cutting down the undead with ease, his every strike accompanied by a flash of golden light. His eyes blazed with a fierce determination that echoed through the city, a beacon for all who fought beside him.

"This is it," Kaian murmured under his breath. "We fight together. We win together."

Rory nodded, her expression resolute as she led the charge forward. "For Rondel!"

The sound of battle filled the air as they pressed on, the once-divided factions now a united front against the forces of Lynk. Every soldier, every mage, and every warrior knew that their survival depended on their ability to hold the line. The dark fog continued to spread, but the combined strength of the UNE and Empire forces, reinforced by the magic of Kristar and Kaian, formed an unbreakable barrier against the darkness.

The Imperial soldiers formed up with their Empress. Pina stood at the head of her forces, her regal presence unwavering despite the chaos surrounding her. Beside her, Prince Diabo glanced nervously toward the path ahead, his sharp eyes scanning the horizon.

"Are we ready, Your Majesty?" Knight Grey asked, his voice low but confident.

"We'll hold the line as long as it takes," Pina replied firmly. "But this battle is far from over."

With a final glance toward the rising storm within the city, the Empire forces moved into position, preparing to reinforce their allies and push forward into the heart of the enemy's domain.

The forces of the UNE, the Empire, and the scattered remnants of Rondel's defenders fought side by side, their courage the last bastion against the coming darkness.

"This is Sierra 5 lead calling the fleet. HVT is located at this location, requesting CAS. Over" Ava called via the comms.

"Sierra 5, this is admiral Ruby, glad to hear from you. Fighters are already on their way, ETA 2 minutes. Enjoy the show, over" Admiral Ruby replies.

While the naked eyes and ears could not see or hear the fighters that were closing in at incredible speed. All UNE soldiers know that they were coming and they were not alone. Following them were 30 gunships and additional force deployment.

As the missiles cut through the thick, fog-laden air like meteors from hell, trailing streams of smoke and fire in their wake. Time seemed to slow as they plummeted towards their targets, each missile carrying the weight of the hopes of those fighting below.

Suddenly, the city was consumed in an eruption of sound and fury. A wall of fire and shockwave erupted from the impact zones, sending dust, debris, and shattered stone flying into the air like confetti. The earth trembled as the bombs detonated in a chain reaction, the sheer force of the explosions turning buildings into rubble in an instant and the heat vaporized them. Whole sections of the city were obliterated in the blink of an eye, once-proud structures crumbled under the weight of the blast, their stone facades reduced to nothing but ash and fragments.

The explosion ignited the dark fog, causing it to writhe and twist in unnatural ways, as if the very air itself was burning. The sky lit up with the brilliant, blinding glow of the explosion, casting the entire battlefield in an eerie, hellish light. The force of the blasts radiated outward in rippling shockwaves, sending even the strongest of the darklings hurtling through the air like ragdolls. The undead creatures, twisted and corrupted by dark magic, were torn apart by the sheer magnitude of the devastation, their reanimated forms shattered and scattered by the unrelenting power of the bombings.

For miles, the busy district was now nothing more than a flattened burnt land, jagged debris, and collapsed structures. The ground was scarred, smoking craters dotting the landscape like the aftermath of an apocalyptic nightmare.

The fighters went for a second pass, releasing a second wave of missiles, ensuring that no stone would be left standing. The once-bustling heart of the slums, the site of so much pain and corruption, was now nothing but a shattered memory. The air was thick with the acrid stench of burning wood, metal, and magic, as the city's heartbeat slowed to a halt. The dark fog, weakened by the destruction, began to dissipate, slowly but surely, retreating as the flames licked the sky.

The sheer destructive power that the UNE just unleashed was unlike anything that the people of Rondel had ever seen before. It was clear to them then that the rumors were not just rumors, they were real stories told by those that fortunate enough to live and told them.

In the distance, a tremor of victory surged through the ranks of the allied forces. The bombing run had not only shattered the enemy's stronghold, but it had also struck a devastating blow to Lynk's dark magic, cutting off the source of his power. For a fleeting moment, the battlefield was silent, save for the crackling of flames and the distant echoes of war.

Lynk is dead.

In the great hall of the newly-established council chambers, the leaders of the various factions and guilds stood in attendance, gathered from every corner of the realm. The magic guides, mystics whose understanding of arcane arts had protected and shaped their world for centuries, were joined by the esteemed councilors of the cities, who wielded influence over politics and trade. The atmosphere was thick with anticipation and tension. They had witnessed firsthand the destructive power of the UNE's weapons, but they had also witnessed the sheer power and determination behind the forces that had fought alongside them. Now, they had come to make a decision that would shape the future of the city.

The council members took their seats at the great round table, their expressions a blend of weariness, determination, and, for some, reluctant respect.

Pina arrived with the weight of history upon her shoulders, her expression as resolute as ever, despite the deep scars the war had left upon her. Dressed in regal attire, her armor now gleaming with a dignity that reflected the transformative journey she had undergone, she ascended the steps to the dais. She paused for a moment, surveying the room filled with expectant gazes, before she took her seat at the head of the table.

With a subtle gesture, she invited the leaders to speak.

First to rise was Arias, the eldest and most respected of the magic guides, his long robes shimmering with the ethereal glow of his craft. His voice, though old and worn, carried a weight of authority. "We have seen the devastation caused by both the dark magic and the forces that fought against it. The question now lies not in the shadow of what was destroyed, but in the hope of what can be built in its place. The UNE brought an end to one darkness, but we must now ask ourselves if we are willing to face the larger shadow that looms—a shadow that has plagued us for centuries: division."

His words hung in the air, as the councilors and guild leaders exchanged glances.

Another guild leader, a young woman with silver-tipped hair, stood next. Her voice was clear and unyielding. "We have long feared the power of the UNE, for they are not of our world. But the events of the past days have shown us something different. Their strength, though frightening, is not a force of oppression. It is the strength of unity. It is the strength of an idea. The UNE does not seek to dominate but to uplift and unite. The time has come for us to decide if we can set aside our mistrust and join them, not as subjects, but as equal citizens."

Her words resonated deeply within the room, as councilors nodded in agreement.

One by one, the councilors rose to speak, each offering their support, their concerns, and their hopes for what the future could hold. Despite their differences—be it in magic, politics, or history—there was one thread that bound them all: a shared recognition that their city could not continue in the fractured state it had been in for so long. They had seen the carnage, the war, the suffering. And they understood that they could not afford to remain divided.

The final moment came when Empress Pina herself rose from her seat. She gazed around the room, her eyes filled with a quiet determination. "The city has suffered long enough," she said, her voice steady. "Your people have endured destruction, and despair. We have seen the darkness in the hearts of those who sought power at the expense of the lives of others. But I believe that in this moment, we stand on the cusp of something greater. It is time for us to rise above the fractured state of our world. We must stand united, not out of fear, but out of hope."

A hushed silence filled the room as she turned to face the assembly, her gaze fierce yet hopeful.

"I bless this decision for Rondel to become part of the UNE. We, the Empire, will also be their partners, their equals. Together, we will rebuild not only this city but our spirits. We will forge a new era, one where power is not used to dominate but to heal. I ask you all to join me in this new world, where the past does not dictate our future, where division no longer defines us. We are stronger together. Let us make this the future our children deserve."

As her words echoed through the chamber, a wave of unanimous agreement swept through the council. The magic guild leaders nodded, their ancient wisdom finding harmony with the path ahead. The councilors stood and voted without hesitation, each casting their support in favor of the UNE annexation of Rondel. There was no dissent, no hesitation, only a shared understanding that this was the only way forward.

The moment the vote was cast and the decision was made, Empress Pina smiled softly, knowing the magnitude of what had just transpired. The winds of change had begun to blow, and this was the dawn of a new age. With the blessing of the magic guild leaders and the full support of the council, the city will now be part of the UNE.
