iKnow Your Secret
Sam has been thinking about how bothered she was that Gibby wouldn't go to the dance with her. She decides to go clear her head at the Groovy Smoothie, but when she sees Carly and Freddie there, she walks in on a private moment.
Sam enters the Shay apartment to find Spencer working on his latest sculpture. She stopped momentarily to look at the metal steering wheel at the top of the sculpture that was currently being fixed with many cotton balls. Sam thought about asking what this thing could possibly be, but she was too distracted with her own problems to ask questions. Sam huffed, sitting on the couch while Spencer turned to see the outfit she was wearing.
"Hey, how come you're all dressed up?"
"For the girls' choice dance." Sam told him.
"So why aren't you there?"
"Well, I wasn't going to go, but then I thought I'd ask Gibby, and he already had a date with a girl at home."
"I'm sorry, Gibby had a girl at home? The same kid who takes his shirt off in public?" Spencer asked.
"Yeah, can you believe I got turned down by that weirdo?" Sam huffed.
She didn't even want to ask him, but that was the deal with Calry if she let Sam find her a date. Gibby was always someone Sam saw as the goofy kid they could convince to do anything on their show, and seemed like he was just happy to be there. The fact that Sam got turned down by him felt like an insult to injury. Sam got up to get a soda out of the fridge, still looking at Spencer's peculiar sculpture.
"What is that thing anyway?"
"Oh, It's a bunny." Spencer said.
"That's a bunny?"
"Yeah, what do you think?"
Sam just stared at it, shaking her head, and didn't have the energy to make something up.
"I'm gonna go get a smoothie." Sam said, leaving Spencer to finish, while she headed to the Groovy Smoothie.
After a night of Freddie's date making things disappear and reappear, and Carly's date constantly interrupting her, the two found themselves alone at the Groovy Smoothie. Both of them were grateful for this moment of peace, and decided to dance together, and at least have one nice dance this evening. Despite the very strange company Freddie had at the dance, he still couldn't take his eyes off of Carly, thinking about how beautiful she looked. He was jealous when he first saw Carly with Austin, and how this seemingly cool guy got to be the one she danced with all night. Admittedly, Freddie was relieved to hear how annoying this boy was constantly interrupting her, and he knew that Austin likely wouldn't be invited to hang around again. Still Freddie saw how disappointed Carly was that her date didn't turn out the way she thought it would, and thought she deserved to have one nice moment. Freddie smiled when Carly laid her head on his shoulder as they continued to sway to the music. Before both of them realized what was happening, the two of them looked up at each other, leaning in for a kiss. Carly stood for a moment frozen as she stared back at him. Freddie worried that he might have stepped over the line, but then she surprised him by placing another kiss on his lips. Little did they know, the two friends had an audience as Sam is currently standing in the doorway. Neither one of them saw her, and Sam didn't know what to say, so she opted to leave them on their own, until she could wrap her head around all of this.
Back at the iCarly studio, the girls are sitting in bean bag chairs eating popcorn, while Freddie has his laptop out while they brainstorm ideas for the next show. They came up with a few new bits they could try out, one involved seeing how many doughnuts they could balance on Gibby's forehead. They would later read some fan questions, and Carly was currently coming up with some funny answers to some of them. All the while, Sam was absently staring at the wall, continuing to eat popcorn.
"Okay, so this one says, 'Dear iCarly, my best friend got a new boyfriend who seems nice so far, but he kinda smells weird. Whenever he is asked about it, he denies anything is wrong. What should we say to him so that he gets the message?' Sam, what do you think?"
Sam was still staring at the wall, when she finally looked over at Carly.
"I'm sorry, what was that again?" Sam asked.
"The girl, who's best friend has a smelly boyfriend. What should she say to him?"
"I don't know, to take a shower." Sam said, taking another handful of popcorn.
Carly thought if anyone could think of a good comeback, it would be Sam, but this isn't like her. She's been quiet and distant all day, and Carly couldn't figure out why. Sam didn't even insult Freddie when she walked it, which would ordinarily be a relief, but even he was becoming concerned. He sets his laptop aside so that he and Carly could get to the bottom of what was going on.
"Hey Sam, is something on your mind?" Carly asked.
Sam looked at Carly, and then to Freddie. She opened her mouth to speak, but then just stared at the floor.
"It's nothing."
"Are you sure? You've been quiet all day." Carly said.
"Yeah, I didn't sleep last night."
Carly looked at Freddie, but he just shrugged his shoulders. She turned to her friend, and opted to take her at her word for now.
"Well, If you want, we can put this off until later, and go downstairs to watch a movie."
"Sure, sounds good."
The gang made their way downstairs, and Carly was still concerned, but she didn't know where to start. Maybe after they chilled out for a while, Sam would feel more like talking.
Later after their movie and pizza, Sam didn't feel like hanging out, and decided to go home. Carly went to the kitchen to get refills of their drinks, and she sat back down handing one to Freddie. The two of them sipped their sodas, and sat in awkward silence for a bit, not wanting to be the first one to bring up their kiss. When they finally got the courage to look at one another, both Freddie and Carly offered the other a smile. Freddie cautiously reached over to take Carly's hand, and she accepted it. After a few moments, Carly finally spoke up.
"I had fun the other night."
"I did too, ya know, when it was just the two of us."
"Yeah." Carly nodded.
Carly and Freddie stared at each other, leaning closer and closer together, before snapping back to reality, and stopping to talk about their currency situation.
"So, what are we?" Carly asked.
"Well, I'm definitely happy to be your friend, and if that's all you want to be…I'm okay with that. I do really like you, and if you wanted to be more than friends, I would be okay with that, too." Freddie told her.
Carly leaned over giving Freddie a kiss on the cheek. "I'd like that, too." She said, with the two of them leaning into a full kiss.
Freddie and Carly held hands tighter now, sitting back pondering how to start this next conversation.
"So, how do we talk to Sam about this?" Carly asked.
"I wish I knew. Any thoughts?"
"None. She's already been in a funk lately. Do you think this will make things worse?" Carly asked.
"I guess we won't know until we talk to her." Freddie shrugs.
"I guess so."
With that, Carly and Freddie decided to watch another movie. They wanted to relax, and not think about anything until tomorrow when they would have to have what is possibly one of the most difficult conversations among their friend group.
The next afternoon, Carly and Freddie are at the iCarly studio waiting for Sam. Freddie is on his computer adjusting the equipment, and Carly is going over their agenda for the show. It's all they can do to keep from thinking about the talk with Sam. Neither were sure how their friend would react. Would she be angry? Would she feel betrayed? They didn't have to wait long as the door popped open, and Sam came through, scaring both of them. Freddie ducked slightly behind his monitor, and Carly stood up straight trying to appear as normal as possible.
"Hey guys." Sam greeted, opening up her soda and picking up her sounds remote.
"Hey Sam. Uhm, how are you doing today?" Carly asked.
"Good. You guys ready to go?"
"Yeah." Carly answered, looking over to Freddie. "Listen Sam, Freddie and I have to talk to you about something."
"What's up?"
Freddie finally came out from behind the computer, and stood next to Carly. They both took a deep breath together, knowing they couldn't keep this hidden forever.
"Sam…" Both said at once. Carly opted to finish.
"Sam, me and Freddie…well, Freddie and I, we, uhm…well you know we both had a double date at the dance, which turned into just the two of us at the end of the night…and uhm, we sort of kissed."
Sam looks up at them. "I know."
"You know? Uhm, how do you know?" Carly asked.
"I saw you two at the Groovy Smoothie. It looked like you were having a good time together, so I decided to leave you two on your own." Sam told them.
Sam's tone was flat, but still they couldn't tell exactly how she was feeling. She didn't sound angry, but at the same time she didn't seem to be congratulating them either. Freddie finally spoke up, taking the burden off of Carly.
"Sam, we weren't trying to hide anything from you. It came as a surprise to us too, and we're still trying to figure things out." Freddie explained.
"It's cool. I'm happy for you guys." Sam said.
"Really?" Freddie asked.
"Sure." Sam nodded. "Come on, Let's do the show."
Carly and Freddie look back at each other before nodding 'okay', and they begin filming. The show went along smoothly, and Sam remained upbeat and engaging like she was whenever they filmed a show. Their new bits were a big hit, and everyone seemed to be having fun. They ended by encouraging their viewers to visit , and told them they'd see everybody next week. After they were clear, Carly told Freddie she wanted to talk to Sam alone, and see if she can get her to open up. Freddie agreed, going downstairs to see what Spencer was doing, and Carly sat across from Sam on the other bean bag chair. Sam looked up, giving her friend a half smile, and Carly continued their conversation from earlier.
"Sam, are you sure everything is okay? You've been really quiet lately."
"Carly, it's really fine, I don't care that you and Freddie are together." Sam told her.
"I don't know that we're exactly together yet. I mean, maybe we will be, I think. Still we didn't mean to hide it from you."
"I'm just worried about things changing. If you two become a couple, I don't want to get left behind." Sam said.
"You won't get left behind, okay; I promise. We'll always be friends like we always have."
Sam nodded but kept her eyes on the floor. "I hope so. I mean, I've seen couples get together, and they're excited about spending more time together, and then they forget about their other friends."
Carly sat next to Sam, placing an arm around her.
"I will never, ever forget about you. No matter what happens with Freddie and me, you will always be an important part of my life. I'm not letting you go anywhere, never, never, never." Carly said, pulling Sam in for a tight hug.
Sam finally smiled, hugging Carly back, and congratulating Carly and Freddie for real this time. She knew things would be different, and this was a change that Sam would have to get used to, but she had faith in Carly that she would keep her word. She hasn't steered her wrong before, and was willing to see where this new relationship goes. The girls decided to join Freddie downstairs for dinner, and now things would hopefully be even better than before.
