Whooo, this chapter didn't take nearly as long as the others did. I hope I fleshed the story out a bit more in this chapter and added some more personality to the characters.
Let's read the reviews, shall we?
skylorbaker14 chapter 51. Mar 4
I am happy to see more of this story, I'm also curious about if she could even purchase Arkem. I thought the city or the government owned it and they had some system for different people of standing to decide on different matters involving the place and its inmates
Me: Considering how corrupt Arkham is I don't see anyone turning their nose up to the amount of money Adriane is willing to pay to be able to help people in need.
That was the only review that had a question from this site, I did see someone review on AO3 though that they thought that the Joker/Jack and Sirius would make a couple and I don't know how to feel about that XD. They were supposed to have a brotherly relationship but now I don't know.
Anyways onto the story
Bruce walked into the Batcave to see Jason in the middle of what looked like a mental breakdown, he wished that he could get Alfried, he was so much better at this stuff than Bruce but he didn't have time. He quickly ran up to his child and did his best to comfort him.
"Jason hey, can you hear me, If you can hear me then try to look at me okay?" Bruce spoke as he knelt down to be at eye level with Jason, he was relieved when Jason looked at him but it didn't mean much when the guy was still hyperventilating.
"What are five things you can you can see?" Bruce hoped this helped calm his child down, if not he didn't know what to do.
"I-I see you, the-the batcar, my old r-robin uniform, my shoes, and the batcomputer," Jasper stuttered his way through his response but as long as he was still alert Bruce didn't care.
"Okay, what are four things you can feel?" Bruce kept his hands on his son's knees, hoping that he was helping to ground him to earth.
"I-I feel the chair, your hands, my-my shirt, and my pants," Jason mumbled, calming down slightly which relieved Bruce.
"What are three things you can hear baby bird?"
"I hear the barcomputer hum, I hear your voice, and I-I hear the blood roaring in my ears," Jason started breathing a bit easier now.
"Good, good, now what's two things you can smell?" Bruce gave Jason a soft reassuring smile.
"I smell your shampoo and the scent of parchment," Jason glanced at the desk that held said parchment before looking back at Bruce when he tapped on his knee.
"What's one thing you can taste?"
"Um, I taste bile."
Bruce got concerned, "Do you feel the need to through up?" He relaxed when Jason shook his head.
"Want to talk about what this was about, are you okay?" Bruce knew that Jason went to confront Adriane, how couldn't he know? Jason might seem tough but he truly cared about those around him and Bruce knew that his son didn't want anyone else he cared about hurt by the Joker.
"You need to get someone with magic from the league down here, " Jason spoke, now that he wasn't panicking at the realization that he was trying to kill a man who was being controlled by evil dark magic he could realize that Bruce needed to get someone to confirm this information.
"Why, what's wrong?" Bruce asked as his face turned serious, in response all Jason did was hand the man the parchment that had been on the desk and watched as Bruce's face turned cold and unemotional. He knew that Bruce was just as shocked and horrified as he was.
His eyes widened when he heard what Bruce mumbled in his shock, "I almost killed an innocent man."
"WHOA Wait what do you mean?" Jason asked as he felt another shock flow through his body.
Jason saw the way Bruce froze before sighing, "When you were killed I was furious, I tried to kill the Joker myself but Clark stopped me, he held me back it's why we're not as close as we used to be before you died."
Jason couldn't believe it, Bruce had tried killing the Joker? All these years of hating Bruce, despising him for not getting revenge for his child's death, it was all for nothing.
Bruce had tried to get revenge, he had tried to kill the Joker for Jason, and now that he knew this any lingering anger vanished as he leaned forward and hugged Bruce, no his father for the first time in years.
Bruce wrapped his arms around his second oldest and closed his eyes, the two men stayed like this for the next few minutes before Jason let him go and looked away obviously embarrassed about what he just did.
Bruce just chuckled with a smile as he stood up, "I'll contact Zatanna and see how soon she can get down here, we'll tell the others as soon as Zattana has confirmed what this parchment says."
Jason opened his mouth but Bruce cut him off, "The reason we're not telling them now is because Dick will feel horrible, he killed the Joker and I brought him back. The only reason I brought him back, back then, was because I knew that murdering someone, even the Joker, would eat at Dick until he self destructed."
Jason winced as he had to agree with Bruce, Dick would have destroyed himself if he had to live with the Joker's death on his hands.
~ A couple hours later ~
Batman, Red Hood, and Zatanna stood outside the gates of Adriane Potter's home. Within minutes of them arriving the front door opened and the three heroes saw a teenage girl start walking up to the gate.
Red Hood confirmed that this was Adriane as Batman took a good look at his second cousin, he was happy to see that she seemed healthy and happy.
"May I help you?" Adriane asked as soon as she got within speaking distance of the three.
Batman stepped forward, "Yes, Jason Todd got in contact with us with some interesting information, we're here to confirm that this information is true."
Adriane raised an eyebrow, "And how do you plan on doing that?"
Red Hood gestured at Zatanna, "This is Zatt\anna one of the Justice League's magic users, we want her to do a scan on the Joker to prove that what we've been told is true."
Adriane glanced at the woman who seemed to be in her late twenties to early thirties, she was wearing an outfit that wouldn't be that out of place as a magician assistant in Vegas, she had long black hair and blue eyes.
Zatanna stepped forward, "I promise that all I shall do is do a magical scan unless attacked."
Adriane frowned before nodding, she flicked her wrist and let the gate open as she stepped back, "Follow me, he's in the sitting room with my godfather."
Giving the group one last frown, something was nagging her about Batman and Red Hood and she couldn't put her finger on it, she turned and walked into her home, not even bothering to check if the three heroes were following her.
She didn't see Zatanna's eyes widen at the strength of the wards around the manor, nor did she see the curious glances at the magic user at her reaction. Zatanna waved the two off before hurrying to follow the teenager leading them.
It didn't take long before the group of four reached a tastefully decorated sitting room, Zatanna's eyes widened when she saw the two men in the room.
Was that Sirius Black, wasn't he supposed to be in prison for betraying the Potter family to Voldemort? She glanced at Batman who shook his head in response, this told her that he would explain why a wanted criminal was here.
Well, a second wanted Criminal that was.
When Zatanna recovered from seeing Sirius Black it was clear to her that Adriane already explained what was going on to the two men on the couch. The man who could only be the Joker kept sending looks of guilt at Red Hood and Batman as he agreed to let Zatanna scan him.
It didn't take long after that for her to confirm that what the parchment Jason Todd had been given was correct. Batman apologized for bothering the three before the heroes left.
Adriane watched the heroes leave and sighed in relief, at least now the bat family wouldn't attack her Uncle under the impression that he was still the Joker. Maybe she should take her Uncle and move out of the city, it couldn't be good for him to live here after all.
She could always come visit her family here whenever she wanted, she decided she would speak to her manager about this. She still wanted to help the people of the city but that didn't mean she had to live here to do so.
Her magic seemed to agree with her that she should move and she realized that the reason her magic had pulled her here in the first place was to have her reunite with her Uncle and help him.
She went back to the sitting room and talked to Sirius and her Uncle about what they thought about moving, while they were both surprised and confused considering Adriane had just moved here not even a week ago they didn't have any protests.
Jack only mentioned that he would need to visit with Harley Quinn and apologize for everything he had put her through, he said that he didn't expect her to forgive him but he still felt like he should apologize so she knew that he was truly sorry.
He said that in a few days, he would go find Poison Ivy who he assumed would know where Harley was. Adriane offered to come with but he turned her down with a small smile insisting that he would be okay.
The rest of the night was spent chatting about where they should go next, surprisingly Sirius suggested that they wait until they check the list of properties and see if Adriane's magic called to any specific place like it had with Gothem.
~ With the Batfamily ~
Batman had told everyone to go to the Batcave as soon as they could, he explained that he had something important to tell them. He even asked Alfried to come hear what he had to tell the family.
Red Robin sat down in one of the swivel chairs and leaned back, he had to admit that he was curious. He learned that Zatanna had been involved in whatever it was that Batman was going to tell them about, it had to be big and important if Batman brought in a magic user.
Nightwing leaned against the Batcomputer, Bats was lucky that he was able to get here so soon. He did have to admit to being curious, it wasn't often that Batman gathered the entire family together for a briefing like this. He noticed that even Red Hood was there and to Nightwings surprise, he seemed more relaxed than he had been in years.
Red Hood knew what this was about but he didn't bother saying anything, he knew that the old man would want to be the one to tell the family. Family, that was something that he had thought he didn't have anymore. He cursed ever listening to the League of Assassins when they told him that Batman hadn't cared about his death.
He cursed never trying to get Batman, Nightwing, or even the new Robins side of the stories before he flew off the deep end and tried to kill the poor kid. He and Batman had sat down and actually talked about things and cleared up several misunderstandings today, if only he had tried doing this when he came back to Gotham.
Robin stood in a corner of the cave observing his comrades, he refused to call them siblings. His refusal to see them as siblings didn't just have to do with him being the only Blood son, it also had something to do with the fact that Red Hood had slept with his mother. He did not believe he could see someone who slept with his mother as his sibling, it grossed him out just thinking about it.
Speaking of Red Hood, Robin had noticed that the anger that was induced by the Lazarus Pit appeared calmer, it didn't seem to be gone completely but it was undoubtedly on its way to being gone. It looked like Father and Red Hood had finally talked things out.
Alfred had to acknowledge that he was curious but he knew this had to have something to do with the Joker. He was pleased to see young Jason so relaxed, perhaps the Joker was dead and Jason no longer felt fear of the clown since he now knew that the man couldn't hurt him any longer.
Alfred didn't know how close he was when he thought that.
Soon enough Batman walked into the cave, he eyed his children and the man he saw as a father figure for a few moments before he started explaining what Zatanna had confirmed for them.
Everyone, including Robin and Alfred, were shocked and the revelation that the Joker was an innocent man who had been controlled by some of the darkest magic imaginable for years. Red Hood had to jump at Nightwing and catch him before he could hit the floor, it was clear that the young adult was feeling the horror of the realization that he had murdered an innocent man.
