Ashe

We went inside, and Mommy let me help her cook. The kitchen was filled with the scent of fresh herbs and spices, a symphony of aromas that made my mouth water in anticipation. Mommy handed me an apron, and I eagerly tied it around my waist, ready to dive into our culinary adventure.

"Today, we're making your favorite—spaghetti and meatballs," she said with a smile, her eyes twinkling with affection.

I nodded enthusiastically, rolling up my sleeves and getting to work. Together, we chopped vegetables, mixed ingredients, and stirred sauces, our hands moving in perfect harmony. Every now and then, Janna would dash into the kitchen, her curiosity piqued by the delicious smells, and Poppy's gentle coos provided a soothing background melody.

Jaxon watched from the living room, his eyes keen and observant, while we waited for Daddy to come home. As the evening shadows grew longer and the sky outside darkened, a tiny knot of worry began to form in my chest. I tried to focus on the task at hand, but the uncertainty gnawed at me.

"Mommy, do you think Daddy is okay?" I asked, my voice small and tentative.

She paused for a moment, her gaze softening as she looked at me. "I'm sure he's fine, sweetheart. Sometimes school keeps him a little longer. Don't worry, he'll be home soon."

Despite her reassuring words, I couldn't help but glance at the clock, counting the minutes. The cheerful sounds of our cooking filled the air, but underneath it all, an anxious silence hovered. Mommy must have sensed my unease because she reached over and squeezed my hand gently.

"We'll keep his dinner warm for him," she said with a comforting smile.

And so, we continued our culinary creation, trying our best to stay positive, but my thoughts kept drifting to the front door, hoping to hear the familiar sound of Daddy's footsteps.

Suddenly, the sound of the front door opening echoed through the house, and my heart leapt with hope. I turned just in time to see Daddy stepping inside, his face lighting up with a tired but genuine smile as he was greeted by our excited dog, Blue, whose tail wagged furiously.

"Daddy!" I exclaimed, rushing toward him. He crouched down to catch me in a warm embrace, the familiar scent of his cologne mingling with the aromas from the kitchen.

"I'm home, everyone," he announced, standing up with me still clinging to his leg. Mommy walked over, her smile widening as she wiped her hands on her apron.

"Welcome home, love," she said, giving him a kiss on the cheek. "Dinner's almost ready."

"Perfect timing," he replied, gently detaching me from his leg and ruffling my hair. "I can't wait to see what my chefs have prepared."

As we all gathered around the table, the earlier tension melted away, replaced by the comforting warmth of family togetherness. The spaghetti and meatballs turned out to be a delicious success, and laughter filled the room as we shared stories about our day. The worries of the evening faded into the background, leaving only the joy of being together.

The rest of the evening was quiet but good, the kind of calm that wraps you like a cozy blanket. We all settled into the living room, watching a movie together and basking in the peaceful moments. As the time ticked by, yawns began to escape, signaling that it was time to call it a night.

With sleepy smiles and soft goodnights, we made our way upstairs. I brushed my teeth slowly, relishing the comfort of routine. Mommy tucked me in, her gentle kiss on my forehead like a seal of security. Daddy peeked in, whispering his own goodnight and promising sweet dreams.

As my eyes grew heavy, the day's worries seemed like a distant memory. The house was quiet, but it was a good kind of quiet, filled with the warmth of love and the promise of dreams. And so, I drifted off to sleep, wrapped in the serenity of our shared moments, ready to welcome a new day.

The morning came too soon, the soft light of dawn peeking through the curtains. I reluctantly pulled myself out of bed, the warmth of last night lingering like a pleasant echo. Today was a new day, and with it came the routine of school. I dressed quickly, my mind a whirl of anticipation and curiosity.

As I made my way downstairs, the familiar scent of breakfast greeted me. Mommy was already in the kitchen, preparing our morning meal with the same care she always did. Daddy was sipping his coffee, the newspaper spread out before him, and Blue was lazily stretched out on the floor, enjoying the quiet morning.

"Good morning, sunshine," Mommy greeted me, placing a plate of pancakes on the table. "Did you sleep well?"

"Yes, Mommy," I replied, taking my seat. "Thank you."

We ate breakfast together, the conversation light and easy. Daddy shared his plans for the day, and Mommy reminded me to pack my lunch. The normalcy of our routine filled me with a sense of comfort and readiness for whatever the day might bring.

After breakfast, I grabbed my backpack and headed out the door, Daddy's encouraging words and Mommy's loving smile sending me on my way. The air was crisp and fresh as I walked to school, my thoughts drifting to the day ahead and the friends I would see.

I found Jaxon waiting at the corner near my house, his usual grin spreading across his face as he saw me. "Hey, ready for another day?" he asked, his energy infectious.

"Ready as I'll ever be," I replied, feeling a bit more confident with my best friend and bodyguard by my side. We walked together, chatting and laughing as we made our way to school, the familiar journey comforting in its routine.

As we walked to school, I couldn't help but ask, "Jaxon, are there still people after us?"

Jaxon's expression turned serious for a moment before he ruffled my hair playfully. "You let me worry about that, Ashe. You focus on being a kid, okay? Have fun and don't worry about who is out there."

I nodded, but my heart still felt heavy with worry. It wasn't just about Jaxon and me anymore. I thought about Mommy and Daddy, always so bustling with their tasks yet unknowingly dragged into this hidden danger. Then there was Janna, my little sister, full of life and innocence, and Poppy, our baby sister, whose giggles and cries filled our home with joy and noise.

"Jaxon," I began, my voice barely above a whisper, "I worry about Mommy, Daddy, Janna, and now even Poppy. What if something happens to them because of us?"

He stopped and turned to face me, his eyes gentle yet firm. "Ashe, your family is safe. They have me Carter and Carmen. We will take care of you there is nothing you need to worry about it,"

His words were like a balm to my troubled heart, and I felt a flicker of hope. With a deep breath, I let his reassurance sink in and nodded. "Okay, Jaxon."

With renewed determination, we continued our journey to school, the morning sun casting long shadows on our path. Today might bring challenges, but with Jaxon by my side and the love of my family behind me, I felt ready to face whatever came our way.

As soon as we arrived at school, I thanked Jaxon for walking with me and promised to see him at lunch. I ran off to find my friends Lacey and Taliyah, eager to start the day with a smile. The schoolyard was buzzing with activity, and it didn't take long to spot them. Lacey was twirling a strand of her hair absentmindedly, while Taliyah animatedly recounted a story from her weekend.

"Hey, you two!" I called out, racing towards them. "What did I miss?"

Before they could respond, I noticed a commotion nearby. I turned my head and saw a boy I still didn't know the name of, the notorious bully, picking on a smaller kid. His sneer and harsh words made my blood boil.

Without a second thought, I marched over, my heart pounding in my chest. "Hey! Leave them alone!" I shouted, my voice stronger than I felt. The bully turned to face me, surprised at the interruption. I might not have known his name, but I knew that this behavior couldn't go unchecked.

As I got closer, I realized he was picking on my cousin Ryder, and this made me even angrier. Ryder was one of the gentlest souls I knew, always kind and never causing trouble. Seeing him being pushed around like that fueled a fire within me.

"Leave him alone, I said!" I repeated, stepping between the bully and Ryder. The bully glared at me, but I stood my ground, refusing to be intimidated. "Pick on someone your own size, or better yet, don't pick on anyone at all."

The bully hesitated for a moment, perhaps taken aback by my defiance. Then, with a final sneer, he muttered something under his breath and walked away, leaving Ryder and me standing amidst the now-silent crowd.

"You okay, Ryder?" I asked, turning to my cousin. He nodded, though I could see the relief in his eyes. "Thanks, Ashe. I don't know what I would've done if you hadn't stepped in."

I gave him a reassuring smile. "Don't worry about it. We've got to look out for each other, right?" Ryder's face brightened at that, and I felt a sense of pride swell within me.

With the bully gone, the schoolyard returned to its usual buzz of activity. I waved Ryder off as he joined his own group of friends, then returned to Lacey and Taliyah, who were watching me with admiration.

"That was incredible, Ashe!" Taliyah exclaimed as I approached. "You were so brave!"

Lacey nodded in agreement. "Yeah, you really showed him!"

I shrugged, trying to play it cool. "Someone had to stand up to him. Besides, no one messes with my family."

As the bell rang, signaling the start of the school day, we headed inside, our spirits lifted by the morning's events. No matter what challenges lay ahead, I knew I could face them with my friends and family by my side.
