Ashe
I was happily immersed in recounting her day, but I could tell something was up with Jaxon. He was listening to me, but not really listening. His responses were automatic, his mind clearly elsewhere. I felt a pang of worry. Had I done something wrong? Or was this just the 'protecting' thing again?
"Jaxon," I ventured cautiously, "is everything okay? You seem... distracted."
He looked down at me, a small, reassuring smile forming on his lips. "I'm fine, Ashe. Just got a lot on my mind. But hey, let's focus on your awesome day, alright?"
I nodded, but the concern lingered. I decided I would keep an eye on Jaxon. He was always looking out for me, and maybe it was time I did the same for him. We continued our walk home, the afternoon sun casting long shadows on the pavement, and I resolved to ask him more later, when we were alone and there was time to really talk.
For now, I would enjoy the moment, cherish the laughter and the warmth of family, and trust that we would figure everything out together.
We walked in the door. Mommy was happy to see us, and so was Poppy. She was still a baby but she was doing tummy time and smiled when we came home. Her little face lit up with joy, and I felt a wave of love for my youngest sibling. Jaxon bent down to give her a gentle kiss on the forehead, his earlier distraction momentarily forgotten in the presence of Poppy's pure delight. Mommy scooped me into a warm hug, her eyes twinkling with affection.
"How was your day, sweetie?" Mommy asked, brushing a stray lock of hair from my face.
"It was amazing, Mommy!" I exclaimed, launching into a rapid recount of my adventures with Lacey, my voice animated and full of excitement.
I watched them, my heart swelling with gratitude for these simple, yet precious moments. Despite the worries and uncertainties that lingered at the back of my mind, being home with my family brought a sense of peace and comfort. As we all gathered in the living room, the room filled with laughter and chatter, I knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, we would face them together, as a family.
With everyone distracted, I took the chance to gently pull Jaxon aside. "I need to know if there's something I should worry about," I whispered, my voice tinged with concern.
He hesitated, his eyes flickering with a mix of emotions. "Ashe, it's really nothing for you to worry about," he replied, his tone attempting to be reassuring but falling short of convincing.
"Jaxon, please," I pressed softly. "You've always been there for me. Let me be there for you this time."
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "It's just... work stuff and some other things. But I promise, it's all under control."
"But your work involves protecting me, Jaxon," I insisted, my voice steady and earnest. "If this is about me, I want to know."
He paused, a shadow of uncertainty crossing his face. "Ashe, it's not that simple," he began, trying to find the right words. "Sometimes, to protect you, I need to handle things without you knowing. It's not about hiding things from you; it's about keeping you safe."
"Okay, but is there something I can do to keep myself safe too? Is there someone watching me or someone I need to worry about?" I asked, my voice a mixture of determination and concern.
Jaxon looked at me for a long moment, his expression softening. "Ashe, I don't want to worry you or make you not like your new friend," he said gently. "Lacey seems like a really kind person. It's her brother I'm not sure about," he continued, his voice lowering to a near whisper. "There's something off about him, and I can't quite put my finger on it. I've been keeping an eye on him, but so far, there's nothing concrete to be concerned about."
My heart skipped a beat. "Her brother?" I echoed, a mix of surprise and confusion coloring my tone. "Lacey never mentioned having a brother."
Jaxon frowned slightly. "She might not have told you yet. Maybe she didn't think it was important or relevant.
"Who is her brother?" I asked, my curiosity and unease growing.
Jaxon looked at me, his expression serious. "Zachary," he said quietly.
I felt my heart drop. "Why would she not tell me that?" I wondered aloud, confusion and a hint of betrayal seeping into my voice.
Jaxon sighed again, his eyes conveying a deep sense of empathy. "Maybe she has her reasons, Ashe. People sometimes hide parts of their lives they find difficult to explain. But I promise, I'll keep an eye on Zachary, and I'll make sure you're safe."
I nodded slowly, trying to process everything. "Thank you, Jaxon. I appreciate it." The weight of his words settled over me, mingling with the unease I felt about Lacey's brother.
Jaxon sat close by, keeping an eye on all three of us—me, Poppy, and Janna. His presence was a silent reassurance, a reminder that we had each other's backs no matter what. Jaxon really was the best, always watching out for us and ensuring our safety.
Tomorrow, I was going to talk to Lacey about her brother. There was something important I needed to discuss, something that had been weighing on my mind ever since the conversation with Jaxon. The thought of it made me a little anxious, but I knew it was necessary. With Jaxon by my side, I felt a little braver, ready to face whatever came next.
"Just stay cautious," Jaxon advised, his tone softening. "And if you notice anything strange or feel uncomfortable, let me know immediately. We'll figure this out together."
For the first time since our conversation began, a sense of relief washed over me. Despite the new concerns, I knew I wasn't alone in facing them. "I will," I promised, meeting his gaze with determination. "We'll get through this."
With a reassuring smile, Jaxon reached out and gently squeezed my hand. "We'll keep each other safe."
I settled at the kitchen table to do my homework while Janna played with Poppy and Blu. Mommy cooked dinner, her movements rhythmic and soothing in the background. The scent of rosemary and garlic wafted through the air, mingling with the laughter of my siblings and the soft hum of the stove.
As I focused on my assignments, the normalcy of this evening scene provided a comforting contrast to the earlier conversation with Jaxon. The warmth of home, the safety of familiarity—it all helped to ground me amidst the swirling uncertainties.
I glanced up occasionally, watching Janna's animated play with Poppy and Blu, their giggles a melodic counterpoint to the chopping and stirring sounds from the kitchen. This moment of tranquility was a reminder of the simple pleasures that life offered, even when shadows lurked at the edges.
Mommy turned to me, a gentle smile on her face. "How's the homework coming along?" she asked, wiping her hands on a dish towel.
"Good," I replied, returning her smile. "Just finishing up some math problems."
"That's great, sweetie," she said, her eyes sparkling with pride. "Dinner will be ready soon. Do you need any help?"
"No, I think I've got it," I assured her, feeling a renewed sense of confidence. "Thanks, though."
As I returned to my work, the warmth of our home wrapped around me like a comforting embrace, bolstering my resolve to face whatever lay ahead with courage and determination.
