"INCIDENT 0129031974" covers the next file, with an image of a coffin.

Ruby: "Ah, 0129031974."

Shannon: "The one about being buried alive."

The image on the file shows the hand of a man, the fingers covered in blood and worn down to the bone. Shannon has her laptop turned to the screen.

Shannon: "I'll admit, being buried alive is one of my worst fears. As this tale will tell you…"

Zoom in.

We open to see a shot of two mountains peeking above the clouds.

Date of Incident: 29 March, 1974

Location of Incident: Haiti

Shannon: (Narrating) "This tale takes place in the island country of Haiti. They know a thing or two about death."

Several shots of various voodoo shops, occult rituals and piles of skulls throughout Haiti are shown.

Shannon: (Narrating) "Their citizens are descended from slaves taken from West Africa, the birthplace of voodoo, so their culture is rich in occult rituals and voodoo practices. They've even turned death into a commodity, exporting corpses to US medical centres for research purposes. But it's on the voodoo scene where Haiti truly garners death kudos."

Cut to a new scene in a grassy field near a field of trees. Two men are present, one with a white shirt and the other with a flower shirt. They look angered at each other.

Man #1: "This land belongs to me!"

Man #2: "I bought it with my own money!"

Shannon: (Narrating) "These two brothers are squared off in a land dispute. After insults, accusations…"

The white-shirted man slaps the flower-shirted man in the face, which prompts him to shove the white-shirted man, knocking him to the ground.

Shannon: (Narrating) "...and a shove, James's brother is on the ground thinking about revenge."

Cut to the inside of a straw-walled building with candles, voodoo artefacts and bottles lined up on shelves. We see James's brother talking with a man whose face is painted with a skull design.

Shannon: (Narrating) "James's brother seeks out a voodoo witch doctor and arranges a nasty surprise for a brother turned enemy."

Sometime later we see James walk down a clearing in the forest. Suddenly the witch doctor springs out of hiding in front of him, and before James can react the doctor blows a white powder into his face before performing a voodoo dance in front of him as James waves his hands in front of his face.

Shannon: (Narrating) "That white powder may look harmless… but its secret ingredient is a potent poison known as tetrodotoxin, or TTX."

James continues wiping his face as the doctor beats a hasty retreat.

Shannon: (Narrating) "Ruby-Tuesday, analysis, please."

In the office, Ruby has a picture of the molecular structure of tetrodotoxin on her tablet and a picture of a pufferfish.

Ruby: "Tetrodotoxin is like, a neurotoxin. It works by blocking the sodium channels of nerve cells, so the nerve cells can't use the sodium ions to generate electric signals, causing paralysis. It's found in quite a few animals, most notably, like, pufferfish. Crazy as it sounds, pufferfish are considered a delicacy in some parts of the world, notably Japan. The chefs that serve it are trained for years to cut out the parts of the fish that contain the poison, namely the internal organs and skin. But if you happen to eat, like, any of those parts of the fish well… the tetrodotoxin will induce paralysis, especially of the diaphragm that controls breathing, and then it's, like, curtains for you."

Back in Haiti, we see a coffin being lowered into the ground by several men, James's brother amongst them. Several women are crying nearby.

Shannon: (Narrating) "Just two days after quarrelling with his angry brother, James was pronounced dead. But when they buried him, he wasn't 100% dead. He was just paralysed, in a zombie-like state. Still conscious, yet unable to move or scream…"

The men begin covering the coffin with dirt.

Shannon: (Narrating) "...he could only watch on as he was buried alive."

Return to Ruby in the office.

Ruby: "Severe tetrodotoxin poisoning can cause low blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythm, and I already mentioned paralysis, which starts at the lower body and works its way up."

At night we see two other men looking around the field with flashlights. They come across the plot where James is buried and dig up the coffin.

Shannon: (Narrating) "After James's burial the coffin was dug up by grave robbers."

The robbers pry open the coffin and look inside, before recoiling in shock. James's corpse is seen, his fingers covered in blood and the bones visible.

Shannon: (Narrating) "The robbers were faced with the horrific sight of James, who spent the last few minutes of his life trying to claw his way out of the coffin, wearing his fingers down to the bone."

The grave robbers run away in shock. A final shot shows a close-up of James's worn-down fingers.

WAY TO DIE #091

DE-COFFINATED

Back to the Sharuby couple in their office.

Shannon: "Ruby-Tuesday, can I ask you a favour?"

Ruby: "Sure, Shanny. Whatcha need?"

Shannon: "Could you please ask my parents that a small bell is attached to my coffin when I die? That way if I wake up inside I can ring for help."

Ruby: "Okay, I'll do that. After the next death, right?"

Shannon: "Of course. You're narrating."

Ruby nods, marking the file and wheeling over to get the next one.
