Chapter 8

It was the dead of night at Hogwarts, well after curfew and all students were in bed by now and sleeping. Or rather, most were sleeping as at least one was awake. Namely Jane, lying in the first year Slytherin girls dorms, was awake. She tossed and turned, unable to get to sleep despite her best efforts. She couldn't understand it, wondering why she couldn't sleep, at least until she noticed it at last. A strange whispering, just on the edge of her hearing, yet she couldn't exactly make it out, as if it wasn't exact words, she also felt something, a tug on her magical core, as if pulling her to something, to draw her from bed. She grimaced and bit her lip, it was after curfew, she knew she couldn't be doing something like this. But the pull was too strong, so she felt she had no other choice. As such she carefully got out of bed and silently pulled on her dressing gown, she looked around carefully, none of the other girls were awake so she slid her feet into slippers and quietly left the dorm and then the common room. She had no idea where she was going, she simply followed the pull she felt and the growing whispering getting louder. It sounded more like actual words now, it was beckoning her, asking her to come.

She was wary, frightened as she looked around, jumping at every shadow, but luckily she did not seem to run into any teachers, ghosts or anything. The pull grew stronger as she reached a secluded part of the fifth floor and began to follow it, only to jump and nearly scream at the voice.

"Jane?"

She turned sharply and was startled to see a rather surprised and worried looking Ilya standing there. He too had clearly been in bed before coming here.

"Ilya, what, what are you doing here?"

He shook his head. "I could ask you the same, but I guess, I...I'm here because I felt...drawn here, like-"

"Like some magical pull?"

"And a whispering?"

Both of them started and turned as they heard those two voices and soon saw the speakers, Will and Mike.

"Y-yeah…" Ilya admitted.

Jane bit her lip. "Me too."

"And us." Will said. "That's strange, what could have made all four of us be drawn here?"

Mike shook his head. "Whatever it is, it's getting stronger, the whispering is louder, maybe we're...whatever it is we're close. Should we look?"

"I think we should." Ilya said at last.

Jane nodded, despite how nervous she felt. Will looked the same but nodded too and so the four began moving, along the corridor as the pull grew stronger. Until they reached a seemingly blank part of wall which suddenly opened like a door at their approach.

They all shared a wary look before carefully approaching the doorway, there was a room inside, it was narrow but went some distance back, as they approached flames lit on braziers framing the outside of the room, blue-white flames that bathed the area in an ethereal glow. As they walked further down, their wands out now as they were wary, worried, they soon stopped as the room ended. It ended at a large inscription on the wall, the inscription was glowing with traces of magic seemingly coming off it, the writing of the inscription glowed the same whitish-blue colour that was leaking off the inscription itself.

"To those reading this, know that you have been called for a grave duty, there is a great power lying within you, but the true depths of this power cannot be touched yet, not until you find our vaults and unlock them. But beware, there are those who would abuse this power for their own ends, you cannot let them acquire this power, we are sorry this burden falls to you, but stand strong, have trust in those you have faith in and fight back, only you can accomplish this task, but we need you to do it, before it it too late. Beware deceivers however, or the power will fall to a terrible darkness, you are our final hope, all four of you."

That was what it read, then below that, four letters set up like a signature, each one a different style of 'writing'.

It read "G, S, R, H."

They shared a wary look, wondering what this meant. But before they could try and figure it out, they heard footsteps. Mike quickly suggested they share this discovery with Dustin and Lucas and the others agreed before they split, heading back to their common rooms, narrowly avoiding Filch.

"Um, are you guys, sure about this, it sounds a little...crazy." Lucas said with a raised eyebrow.

"I know, I know." Mike said. "But I swear, we all were there, we all saw it and read it. We don't have a clue what it means, but it's creepy and why were we drawn to it."

Dustin bit his lip. "Are you sure it was meant for you guys?"

Jane shrugged. "That seems to be the case, I mean...why else would we be drawn there."

Will nodded. "I believe it's all connected, we just need to figure out what it's about and who left that inscription behind...and what this danger is."

"We need to be able to depend on you guys." Ilya told the two. "After the warning it gave us…"

"You can count on us, right." Dustin replied at once.

Lucas nodded. "Of course, but...I'll need to know more, see more."

"We'll show you-" Mike began.

But before they could make arrangements for that, they were distracted by a loud shout.

"Don't think you can trick me, Munson!"

They turned, eyes wide and saw two boys, fourth years. The one who shouted was tall and strongly built with broad shoulders, neatly parted blonde hair and brown eyes with fair skin, his robes identified him as a Gryffindor, Mike and Lucas both recognized him as the House's Qudditch Star, Jason Carver. The other boy was a Hufflepuff, based on his robes, also tall, he had long curly black hair and eyes, pale skin and a lanky build.

Will was surprised. "That's Eddie Munson, what's Jason's problem with him?"

Mike and Lucas shrugged as they watched things unfold.

Eddie was looking shocked too, holding up his hands.

"Whoa, dude, what are you-?"

Jason snarled. "Don't lie to me, I know what you've been up to, trying to steal my girl."

Eddie spluttered, shocked. "I...what, I have not-"

"I saw the two of you, always spending all that time together, always-"

Eddie cut him off, shaking his head. "You're crazy, I was only helping Chrissy with her homework."

Jason got right in Eddie's face. "Shut up, I know-!"

"Jason, stop!"

The one who just called out was a girl, also fourth year and also in Hufflepuff. She was reasonably tall with long blonde hair tied back, blue eyes, a slender fit build and pale skin.

"He's telling the truth, you-"

"Don't worry Chrissy, I'll handle this." Jason cut her off, clearly refusing to hear her.

But then, before things got even more crazy, the teacher's thankfully intervened, although both boys lost points and were assigned detention with their respective heads of House. While people whispered at this strange development, Mike, Will, Ilya and Jane got an idea on how to show the room to Lucas and Dustin without drawing attention.
