BOOM! We're Back Baby! Welcome to another Chapter! Guys, Gals, My People! I can't thank you enough for the faves, follows, and reviews! Working on this is such a labor of love and I can't wait to get the next one out, And I promise I will do my best to make it sooner rather than later. Real quick note before we begin. There is a problem with me uploading and how it translates to computer and phone/ipad format. I don't quite know what the issue is. I hope you don't run into it. On my Laptop everything is as I format it but for whatever reason it comes out wonky on peoples phones/ipads when they read. Please don't hate me for that as I am still really new at this and honestly not great with Technology. But enough of that! Check the bottom for the rest! I hope you enjoy the chapter!
Chapter 9
Last Time:
"Hey. You listen to me. You did everything you could. You're not gonna be able to save everybody on your own okay? You hear me?! Doing what you did today makes you a Hero, no if's, and's, or but's about it. It's like you said…if you hadn't of been there that one other cop would be dead too. Be proud of what you did. Be proud. I know me and Rich are." Ted said while Richard wore a slight smile and nodded along at the end of Ted's statement.
As the three of them got back to being comfortable at the table for some dessert since they were treating the meal as dinner the news station came on and drew all of their attention.
"This is Summer Gleeson reporting from GNN the Gotham News Network! Our top story for this Five O'clock Segment-The New Hero In Gotham…ALL MIGHT!"
The three men moved to the living room couches and sat as they watched Summer Gleeson begin to play eyewitness accounts and interviews from those that had seen All Might in action that day as well as when he had even just passed them by. Each account came and seemed more fantastical than the next, and Jack found himself surprised that some even went so far as to embellish his own abilities for him.
The funniest remark said that he had picked up and launched a car like a beach ball, which he did not even come close to doing.
'Well…at least not yet.' Jack thought as he watched and listened as the reports carried on.
Many of the statements coming in sounded almost exactly the same after a time, but most of them had the same thing in common.
Almost everyone was grateful, and if Jack wasn't misunderstanding it they were excited too.
"He was so cool!"
"He actually wanted to work with us! He was the one who had us coordinate the search up through both the east and west sides of the Narrows in the effort to capture Zsasz."
"He stopped those men from getting away with the stolen lock boxes from my branch!"
"I wanna know what that green lightning is about! He's obviously a Meta-Human! Or maybe even an Alien?! But like how'd he get his powers?! Was he born with them? Or did something happen that made him that way? More importantly where can I get that suit…it was Awesome!"
"I'm wondering how old he is? If he's of age you think he's single?"
"All Might saved my Life! I get to go home to my little girl because of him. When you see this All Might…Thank you. Thank you for helping me go home to my family!"
Though as they say… every ray of light always casts a shadow. That proved true with some of the other responses given about the new Hero's debut.
"If he's such a Hero why didn't he come in and stop the thieves before they even got the boxes?! My husband and I were forced to the ground because of those scumbags! My old body can't handle that kind of stress. He should have been here sooner!"
"Gotham's already got enough problems with the Batman and the freaks he deals with, we don't need some super running round trying to play lone ranger too!"
The most audacious of the complaints coming from a local doctor who actually wound up working on Zsasz and the bozo's from the bank heist.
"Whoever this All Might character is, he was brutal to these men. This city has dealt with that more than enough while under the 'protection' of the Batman and his little bird boy sidekick! When does the rule of genuine Law have its day?!"
Each of the glowing reviews had Jack's spirit rising as he listened to the genuine feelings pour out to him for the things he had done so far today, while he did his best to not let the negative one's impact him much.
Jack had read up on everything he could about when Batman had debuted, and then after listening to what the officers said earlier he could see now that some of the articles he'd read were spot on.
Batman had in fact put many a criminal in traction through his first two years as a vigilante/Hero for the city of Gotham, and it had only seemed to taper out after Robin began appearing on the scene with him.
Having a kid sidekick really did mellow Bruce out a lot…who would have thought. Jack had always believed that was just a stupid fan theory. Apparently it had more merit too it than he had first believed.
Jack while doing his best to be measured in his thoughts on the reviews that were being put out there, was overtaken by the swell of indignation put out by his two benefactors.
Richard when the second half of the people announced their own displeasure about the whole thing… just kept shaking his head with a disappointed frown on his face.
Ted's reaction was a little more vocal.
"WHAT KINDA BULLSHIT IS THIS?! The kid saves the day and this is the kinda thanks he gets?! Can you believe this crap Rich? What the hell kinda Moron complains about a serial killer being handled roughly huh?! And another thing…That crotchety old bat! Age must have addled her brain! If Jack had gone into the Bank the crooks could have easily taken hostages or just shot the place up! Oh but no, no, no, not my old tired and weary bones on the floor! Christ Almighty the people of this city!" Ted said as he got up and headed toward the fridge where he grabbed a couple of beers and a Root Beer for Jack, causing said Hero to scowl playfully at his trainer.
The channel shifted back to Summer Gleeson from the recorded responses where she then changed the pace of the viewing.
"We're going to take you live now to Gotham City Hall where Vicky Vale is reporting with Mayor Anthony Garcia, Police Commissioner James Gordon, and the city's rising star District Attorney Harvey Dent!"
The T.V feed changed from the inside of the GNN building to right outside on the steps of City Hall.
A large crowd had amassed outside of Gotham City Hall to bear witness to the impromptu press conference called by Mayor Garcia.
Forty Three year old Anthony Garcia stood at 5'11 with a relatively trim physique sporting his typical black suit and pants combo, white undershirt, red tie, black dress shoes, and on top he wore a black woolen pea trench coat. His slightly olive colored skin had a healthy shine, his jet black hair slicked back giving the open crowd an unobstructed view of his brown eyes. He had few age lines on his face, though his crow's feet were slightly pronounced.
Next to him was Police Commissioner James "Jim" Gordon. The Forty Year old Police Commissioner of Gotham stood at 5'9 sporting what could be considered a bulky but fit physique, having been gained from his considerable years on the Gotham City Police force. His full head of auburn hair retaining most of its luster outside of the bottom sides seemingly shifting into gray, an obvious result of the stress in being the Commissioner for a city such as Gotham. Jim could be seen wearing his customary light brown trench coat, white long sleeved dress shirt, black tie, light brown dress pants, dark brown dress shoes, and underneath his overcoat he wore his black holster that held his '69 Ruger Blackhawk six shooter pistol.
The third and final member of the entourage making their way to the podium being District Attorney Harvey Dent.
Thirty Year old Harvey Dent cut an impressive figure. He wore a light gray pinstripe suit and pants combo, his black shoes, tie, and off white shirt only standing out slightly against the color of the suit jacket he wore. Standing at 6'0 he walked with a straight back and a light swagger in his step. His dark brown hair shined in the fading light of the day, combed immaculately giving an unfiltered view of his face. His dark and piercing eyes carrying a warmth one might not expect for his job position. His slightly tanned face carried a light smile as he accompanied his fellow servants of the law toward what was sure to be an interesting conference.
All three men had spoken in closed quarters and discussed the events that they had not only heard of happening in the narrows earlier that day, but the footage that was making its way onto the internet about Gotham's newest apparent protector.
Gotham now seemed to officially have its own 'Super'.
The fact that they lived in the age of the internet only pushing said information out that much faster, and it had left all three of the men in a bit of a bind as how to handle the situation.
Gordon had immediately stated that he felt it best to attempt to bring the new young hero in, and politely offer a cease and desist order. That offer was met with immediate confusion and reprisal from the other two men, siting the fact that Gordon did in fact keep counsel with the Batman.
Dent had a very simple opinion about the new young man on the scene. He had watched what available footage the office had and quite frankly was happy, elated even. For too long Gotham had been a sinking ship, understaffed and underfunded. Not only did the city deal with those glaringly obvious issues but the other one that all three of the men were familiar with, the city's corruption. Having another helping hand would exponentially change things, especially if they could get this new local hero on their side. If the firsthand accounts from the officers at the major incidents were to believed…that wouldn't be a problem.
Mayor Garcia was on the fence in a big way. His phone had been ringing non-stop since the young hero's actions at the bank heist this morning, and things didn't seem like they'd be quieting down anytime soon especially with his hand in apprehending someone of Victor Zsasz'z caliber.
On the one hand he was happy to see someone else taking an interest in helping their fair city, but of the same token he was concerned about the message it sent. Having another hero, especially a super powered one would attract a lot of attention.
Attention that could lean more towards the negative side of the spectrum given the tumultuous position Gotham was already in, with the many criminals that called the city 'Home'.
Mayor Garcia wasn't sure if the city of Gotham needed any more problems than it already had.
Gotham City had been drowning in crime for many a year now, and Anthony had only been in office for the past year since he took the victory over Hamilton Hill.
It had been a landslide victory when Batman had provided partial evidence that Hill 'might' have criminal connections throughout the city, leading a possible trail to even people like Rupert Thorne…and Roman Sionis.
The fact that Gotham's corruption spread so far, and quite obviously so deeply left the Mayor wondering if having such an out front hero was a valid idea. But Like it or not this new hero was giving him an open handed opportunity, and he would be a fool to just let it go.
The Mayor stepped down the final steps and approached the podium so that he could address the crowd.
Taking a moment to gather his thoughts Mayor Garcia raised his left hand to try and settle the riled crowd down as he adjusted the mic on the stand in front of him so that he could address the gathered crowd of concerned citizens, and the dreaded paparazzi.
Putting on his best smile the Mayor began what he hoped would be a well-received speech.
"Ladies and Gentlemen! Citizens of Gotham! Today is a momentous occasion. For years now we have had a silent guardian, a protector of our fair city. I am of course speaking of a figure that I'm sure all of you know of…The Batman. But you see what brings us here today is not the Batman himself, but the brand new hero that has made his debut today… the one calling himself All Might! Now I am sure many if not all of you here and those of you watching at home, are indeed aware of our cities history with not just the Batman himself; but the so called 'Super criminals' that he has dealt with on our fair cities behalf. For a very Long time it was the opinion of just about anyone serving in the capacity of public office, and or our very city's Law Enforcement that the Batman himself was in fact a menace. A man that appeared to be just as dangerous as the criminals that he would apprehend." Mayor Garcia said as the crowd as always remained divided in their response as some vocally called out agreement with said statement while others had looks of adamant refusal.
"Let it be known now that earlier today for the first time in Gotham's recorded history that it was not the Batman that intervened and saved our citizen's lives…but a for all appearances wise 'Super' Hero. The footage that I…and those who work here in my office in City hall have gone over is inconclusive. The Hero that goes by the moniker of All Might is in fact either much like Superman of Metropolis and is an alien from another world, or is in fact a 'Meta' Human and has been gifted with miraculous abilities beyond that of a normal man." That statement had the gathered crowd excited and shouting questions such as where did he come from, and who is he?
After taking a moment to allow the crowd to quiet down after they realized that he would not be answering any of those questions the Mayor continued.
"For whatever reason it is that spurred this young hero into action… it is irrelevant. He did in fact not only apprehend no less than a dozen offenders one of which being the known serial killer Victor Zsasz; but this young hero also is recorded to have saved over three dozen lives in total today." Anthony said to a loud outpouring of applause.
"I am taking this opportunity now, in front of all of you to make the formal declaration. Gotham City's police department will be putting its best foot forward in an attempt to work with All Might going forward. It is my hope that he is watching this broadcast as we speak and hears the words from me personally. All Might…Thank you. We welcome you to our fair city, and I hope that you feel comfortable enough to come forward and that we can speak candidly and in a manner that will best establish a way for you to work with the GCPD in efforts to root out the crime in Gotham City."
"When I took my badge of office…I swore that I would do all I can to help make Gotham a safe, and happy city to live in. I hope that this allows me to help better commit to that promise, and allows our city to move forward into a better tomorrow. I hope everyone has a lovely rest of their evening! Good Night and God Bless!" The Mayor said as he came down from the high of the slightly long speech and quickly turned and ascended back up the steps into city hall with Gordon and Dent hot on his heels as he made his way back towards his office.
After clearing the large brown double doors of his office and asking his secretary Denise to make sure that he and the two men weren't disturbed he turned and removed his pea coat, and made his way around his large mahogany desk and took a seat with a deep sigh.
"Well… All in all Mr. Mayor I think that was a brilliant move. It shows initiative, and an open minded way of thinking and hopefully that helps sway our new hero to wanting to come forward and work directly with us." Harvey said as he took a seat in one of the fancy brown hardwood chairs in front of the Mayors desk.
Anthony was happy to see the smile on Dent's face as he had known that he would win the younger man over with that move. He was concerned that the decision may come back to bite him later on, but for now he would run with it. It was far too late in the game to consider retracting his statement, and even if he could he wouldn't. Before his meeting with these two men earlier he had had a meeting with a few of his advisors, and they all agreed that showing support for this new hero would secure him a decent level of political clout as he could grab the general populaces favor with this opinion and subsequent backing of this young hero as the public was already quite taken with him.
And honestly who wouldn't be after all he had done in barely a full day, he already had people buzzing about him.
When Anthony himself had taken the win for Mayor it had been a difficult time in Gotham, and since then he had suffered a great deal of scrutiny from many of those inside, and outside of his office.
Death threats were still a weekly occurrence and he'd be lying if he said that it didn't unnerve him, he simply hoped that this move would help steer things into safer waters for himself and more importantly his family.
Though any line of thought about that was completely derailed as once again Jim was quick to voice his opinion.
"Mr. Mayor I believe that was extremely premature. As I said earlier we should let Batman speak to this young man. He's brand new to this and if what most of my patrolmen are telling me is true he can't be any older than at the very least sixteen or seventeen years old. It looks bad on us that we're relying on the help of this unknown 'possible underage teen' to help save our city." Jim said as he paced slightly back and forth before the Mayors desk.
Doing his best not to scowl at the man Anthony took a deep breath and braced himself for a repeat of the same argument from earlier.
"Jim. I understand your position. I respect you a great deal you know that, but I will once again ask you to remind me exactly what position The Batman holds that you think any of us in this office need to listen to his council…and that's also quite hypocritical considering the Batman fight's crime with a young sidekick of his own. He has made it quite clear in the past that he has no overt interest in working directly with our Police force, and even less interest it seems in working with this office to see justice done. The Batman gets results, always has I am not trying to say that he doesn't…but Jim we are losing the fight for our city. You know as well as I do that there are people that work in this very building that are most probably in Roman Sionis's pocket, and that's not to mention the fact that this city is plagued by someone like the Joker." The Mayor said as he kept his voice slightly hushed towards the end.
The name drop of the so called 'Clown Prince of Crime' had all three grown men shivering, as not a one of them wanted to think about the greatest mad man that had on more than occasion held their city at ransom.
Gordon took a second to recompose himself and then started to try and gain steam again for his argument.
"Mr. Mayor. Anthony. Batman believes that having someone like this involved in the city will draw other, even more powerful individuals here. Not to mention how was he trained? How do we know he's truly competent? That and what if once the criminals that are here realize he isn't going anywhere they redouble their own efforts to carve out parts of Gotham for themselves?" Gordon said as he looked at the Mayor attempting to implore him to consider the Batman's side of things.
All three men in the room knew for a fact that there were far too many criminals in Gotham, and that wasn't even taking into account the 'Super' criminals that plagued them.
Before either of the men could say anything though it was Harvey that stepped in again.
"Gordon I can understand those lines of thought, and I can even appreciate what that will mean as time passes here in Gotham. But the fact of the matter is this…we're deadlocked. We haven't made any significant headway against the criminal element in this city in quite some time, but now we have another back to shoulder some of the burden. Every. Single. Report that came in showed that the young man that made his debut today is Helping Gotham. We'd be remiss if we didn't try and add the strength that he obviously has to our own so we can chase the filth out of our city. What's more I'd like to go back to what the Mayor said and expound on it, who the hell does Batman think he is trying to have any influence over Our decisions for this city? Last I checked... he cruises around this city in what amounts to a sports car/tank hybrid. Batman is the last person to be preaching to anyone about bringing unnecessary danger to Gotham's citizens." Dent said as he glanced over to and held Gordon's steely gaze.
There was a pregnant pause as the three men sat basking in the silence that came after Dent's last words, but it was then broken by the Mayor as he attempted to put them on a brighter path.
"The fact of the matter is this gentlemen. We don't even know if this All Might will accept my offer, though I am hoping he does. If he does the situation will be much like the one I believe you and Batman have Gordon. I'm simply hoping to bring him on board and be able to point him in the direction of the more serious problems that pressure this city. Until such a time that he reaches out to anyone about it however, we without a doubt are going to let him do whatever he feels necessary to protect this city The Batman's opinion be damned. I'm hoping this won't be a problem?" The Mayor said as he looked at the two men who had by and large helped him maintain order.
"Of Course Mr. Mayor." "Not at all Sir." Said the two men as they went to exit the Mayor's office.
Not one of the three of them had any idea how important All Might's help would be in the coming days, but it would make itself all the more apparent sooner than any of them thought.
GOTHAM CITY- GRANT'S GYM
MARCH 5TH 1815 EST
All three occupants of the apartment were quite speechless, after having surveyed the Mayors press conference. They sat for a few minutes just digesting what had been said and already Jack was running through his own mind on the way the scenario could play out. It was leaving him feeling slightly paranoid as he hadn't expected that quick of a good reception, if anything he had expected there to be quite a bit of blowback from the GCPD and the Mayor's office.
Yet it seemed that they might be taking a very proactive approach, though the thought that it was all a trap just kept ringing in the back of his head.
'Okay Admiral Ackbar chill the hell out for a sec and really let me think about this.' Jack thought to himself as he got up off the couch he'd been sitting on and walked back into his room to suit up fully once again trying to silence the damn repaeting meme in his head.
When he returned to the open room Richard was still seated and looking at him from the couch, though Ted was already on his feet and looking at Jack with his arms crossed over his chest.
"Please tell me for the love of God you're not about to go down there and try to actually speak to the Mayor of Gotham." Ted said as he stared at Jack.
"Ted I'm not an idiot. Even if the offer is good, I'm lookin to get my own understanding of how the streets work before I attempt to work my way into an actual partnership with the police." Jack said as he recounted his capsules on the belt before turning back to the two men.
"I'm gonna hit the basement and resupply before I head out. I'm gonna have to make the cartridges bigger so that I can carry more capsules, I want the variety I have but I may need more glue capsules if today has been any showing of what I'm really up against." Jack said as he reattached his belt and made his way towards the back door again to depart the apartment.
"Hold up kid. Let's talk for a minute okay?" Ted said as he gestured to have Jack stop moving and take a seat.
Jack released a small sigh and turned back to the two men but remained standing as he looked at Ted. Ted held Jack's gaze with a slightly stern look for a moment before his features softened and both of them shared a small chuckle, it seemed they both realized that it would be pointless to argue and so Ted kicked it off.
"While you were gone Rich and I talked about some things. Mainly that you're hoofing it all over the place and he thought that we might be able to fix that. That and I also got Rich to make that addition in the garage that you wanted for when you are hoofing it." Ted said as he relaxed his stance a bit.
Jack immediately broke into a smile and bolted for the back door at 5% and vaulted over the railing after passing through the door.
Sticking the landing he made his way over to the enclosed garage and opened the side door and walked inside.
Ted's Garage was a large red brick structure that was only one story high, and sported two large opening doors for vehicles as well as the side door for ease of access. Inside right next to the walk in door, was the opener not only for the two large doors but for the automated gate that enclosed the back lot that could lead to either of the buildings Ted owned.
The inside of the shop was a very generic set up for a mechanics garage with a lift on the right hand side for actually doing the work on cars and even motorcycles. There were three full working tool benches and two large red cabinets that help pretty much any tool you could think of needed in a garage. The far right side had a small indoor bathroom, and out on the open floor of the right side sat Ted's Motorcycle the Catocycle while next to it sat a tarp which Jack assumed covered Ted's civilian bike.
The two men walked in joining Jack as he looked around the garage, where Rich walked further back on the left side of the room and moved a large rolling cabinet. Underneath it lay a new metal door like the ones that could let someone out of their home during a fire for safety.
Jack made his way over and as Ted and Rich opened the door and ushered him down he felt his excitement mount. Jack had often over time spoken with both men as to needing a secret way in and out of the building, for emergencies and things like that and Richard had said he would make it happen had finally delivered it delivered it seemed.
Five steps down led to a dark brown door, that when opened led into a small alcove that had another brown door directly in front of them, and then a small seven foot long hallway that led to what looked like just another solid brick wall.
Richard took that moment to finally speak as he hadn't said a word since the end of watching the news.
"This door in front of you will take you through a small hall that will then lead to stairs that will put you in your basement workshop/training area. That wall there is a secret path that will take you into a moderately sized sewer tunnel that if you follow it to the right it opens up out into one of the lower side streets to the south west. I'm sorry it took so long. But now you'll have a good cover to be able to hide your identity when you leave on foot as it is that you can go downstairs inside through the back where no one else is and use all of this." Rich said as he quickly braced his footing and received a small hug from the young hero.
As Jack looked around and noticed all the mini battery powered lights that had motion sensors he realized that they hadn't actually run power down here yet, but all the same was grateful. The last thing he wanted was to attract Batman of all people back to Ted's Gym and home.
Ted himself threw in his own two cents about the situation.
"Don't you worry about the lights I'll get some actual ones wired up down here, and before you say anything about the damn power bill don't worry about it. It'll be a drop in the bucket and I'm not worried about it. But now…let's go back to the garage. Because I got something for ya." Ted said as he pulled a quick about face and started to walk back up into the garage.
Jack quickly followed the two men back up into the garage, and by the time he had reached the top Ted was already across the garage and was in the process of sweeping the tarp off of the second bike.
It was absolutely beautiful. With the tarp gone Jack could see the bike in its full glory. Said bike was a Harley Davidson Street 750. It was decked out in a dark navy blue with gun-metal gray accents, and it was a sleek looking piece of hardware.
The only piece of color that really popped on the bike was the white star that sat where the Harley Davidson logo should have been on the side of the fuel tank.
It took Jack a second to process that piece of information and then all he could do was stare at Ted.
For moments it dragged on like that until Jack felt he trust his voice.
"Ted. Ted I…Ted this too much. You've done way too much for me. Now this?! You're giving me a bike? No. I can't…I can't accept it." Jack said as he started to shake his head while looking between the man and the bike.
Richard quickly stepped in as he often did.
"See. I told you this was what he would say." Richard said as he put his hands inside of his coats front pockets.
"Shut Up Rich I Know! Listen Kid…Jack. I got this for you so you can save some energy, or so at the very least if you have to travel across the city you're not always doing it on foot. There may come a time when there's a car chase going on and you're too far away to get there on foot, or you may even be too tired from dealing with something else to just hoof it over to the next thing." Ted said as he looked at Jack.
"I get that. And I love it don't get me wrong. But Ted I don't even fully know how to ride." Jack said as he slightly shrugged while looking at the former champion.
"No need to worry. I'll have you taught within a week and doin tricks on it within a month, hand of god here." Ted said as he made a cross over his heart with his right hand.
Jack simply stood there looking at his benefactor for a moment before he shook his head slightly and just started to chuckle.
'The old man really is awesome.' Jack thought as he looked at Ted.
After that he simply said thank you and then they started to talk about establishing riding as part of their schedule for a normal day. Ted as they were walking and talking impressed upon Jack that he would not have to be seen working full time at the gym anymore, but that he really hoped that he would keep up with opening every morning during the week. He explained that it made it look good as far as the payroll was concerned, and Jack didn't want to argue over it so said he had no problem getting things ready in the mornings as per the usual.
The three of them had taken the way through the underground walkway so that Jack could see where he'd come up, and the whole thing made him feel better about living with Ted and the quite real possibility of him bringing Batman down on them both with him now being a hero.
Jack knew it was only a matter of time before that particular confrontation happened.
As the group made their way back into the apartment Jack realized that it was now almost 1900 which meant it was now dark out in Gotham, and that left him with a quandary. Jack could make his way out into the city and hope that he didn't run into Batman, or he could call it a night for his first day of heroing and go down to the workshop and attempt to make the cases for his capsules.
The decision was taken from him as they not only heard the police scanner go off, but saw the television report.
Apparently the Justice League was dealing with an Earthquake relief in Britain, and the video of it showed that Batman was clearly flying the Bat-plane in the air on the video that was showing real time. Seeing that left Jack feeling grateful that when they had passed through the basement he had refilled his capsules just in case, and if the chatter on the scanner was to be believed he was going to be busy tonight.
As the report played on the television, the police scanner let him know that there was a high speed chase that was actually headed in the direction of where they lived.
"Gotta Go!" Jack said as he booked it once again out the back and vaulted the railing. Mid fall he amped up to 8% and landed, making a small set of cracks appear in the ground as it absorbed the impact from his weight and the metal of his shoes and shield hitting the ground as he landed in a triangle pose.
Jack ran and hopped over the back fence and quickly ran down the adjacent street where the scanner had said a Semi-Truck was barreling down the road. As Jack came zipping around the corner he saw the truck flying by the intersection.
Jack quickly performed a small jump and then kicked off the back wall of a building to give himself the height he needed to clear and land on top of the back cabin of the moving Semi.
The car jackers had no idea that they were about to have an encounter with Gotham's latest hero, but they were about to find out.
Jack quickly advanced until he was standing above the red cabin of the Semi, and quickly dropped down onto the hood and turned while slamming his shield into the top of it causing his shield to lodge deep into the metal.
The two inside the truck quickly panicked as the driver slammed on the breaks almost making Jack lose his footing. Meanwhile the passenger quickly started to shoot at Jack with a handgun while he ducked behind his shield. As the driver began to accelerate again Jack heard the passenger curse over the sound of the engine and the wind and decided to take action as he was in the middle of reloading. Jack opened one of his belt packs and primed a shock tablet, he then proceeded to punch a hole in the window and tossed said tablet into the cabin.
Jack watched as the small blast went off and caused both men to have convulsions as the energy hit them both in the confined space. Jack seeing that the passenger had dropped his gun and was currently still convulsing alongside the driver took quick action. He ripped his shield from the metal, and slapped it in place on his back and detached his grapple wire. He stood up and shot it through the back of the cabin in the roof and used it to lower himself to the side of the driver's door.
Jack proceeded to punch through the driver's window, the force of his lunge actually causing him to not only break the window but deck the driver right across the left side of his jaw. Jack proceeded to open the door and shoved the now completely unconscious perp across the full seat onto the passenger who was still conscious but clearly disoriented.
Jack quickly took the wheel and stabilized the truck and started to apply the brakes as he turned the wheel to avoid almost having a full on collision with oncoming traffic, as the truck had actually barreled through and intersection at an angle and had crossed over the divider into the opposite lanes.
'Thank God the light was Green and there's not too much traffic right now.' Jack thought as he brought the vehicle to a screeching stop.
Jack jumped out of the cab after having set the gears into park. He then bodily removed the driver and placed him on the pavement, and he then rounded the truck to go to the passenger side. As Jack came fully around the passenger had actually managed to gain enough of his faculties to get out of the truck, but not enough to be stable in his attempts to load the pistol he was attempting to brandish at Jack.
A single squad car and a follow undercover car both had their lights on and were in the midst of pulling up, when Jack entered the perps personal space. Jack quickly smacked the gun from the passengers hand and that motion woke the thief from his stupor, but it didn't help him.
Jack was already operating at 8% and the sloppy right hook the guy threw was ducked and followed up with a grab to the back of the elbow, while Jack used his left hand to grab him by the back of his black jacket. The perp got his head banged of the swinging truck door before he was then spun bodily by the arm and brought back to facing Jack, where he then caught a right cross that knocked him to the pavement and into a deep slumber.
Jack could see that the uniformed officers, and what had to be two detectives exiting their vehicles and currently making an approach to his position. While they made their way over their weapons currently drawn, Jack walked back around and proceeded to grab the other downed perp by the right pants leg as he then started to drag both of the thieves towards the back of the truck on right hand side.
As Jack came out from the far right side the officers were now in plain view for him to take a look at. The two uniformed officers were male and wearing the traditional GCPD dark blue uniform that was typically worn by those worked on the beat. It was the other two people that when he really got a look at them he had to fight hard to really control his facial expression, because while a great deal of his features were obscured him dropping his jaw in surprise would send up a few flags to the two people standing before him.
He recognized them both immediately from the incarnation of The Batman T.V. show that aired during the early to mid-2000's back home. Though they looked real enough to him if looking at them from a show or comic book panel he'd peg them all in the Young Justice profile and he wished he could see these two characters in such print.
Detectives Ellen Yin and Ethan Bennett looked exactly as he remembered them, though he couldn't exactly peg either of their ages from looks alone.
Jack went to speak and let them know the situation as he watched both of the uniformed officer's smile and begin to holster their side arms. Bennett had even been in the same process.
Detective Yin however seemed to have different plans as she derailed Jacks greeting when she brought her weapon to bare.
"Put Your Hands in the Air! Right Now All Might! I'm taking you in." Yin said with a strong voice as she kept her sights trained on Jack.
Both of the uniformed officers were staring at Yin and the situation as a whole wide eyed, and Jack had a feeling he'd be doing the same at the moment if he hadn't already been doing his damn site best to keep his expression as jovial yet unreadable as possible.
Thankfully Ethan quickly took hold of the reigns of the situation and began to try and put things in order.
"Yin! He just helped us! What're you doing right now? I understand your feelings about all this, I really do. But All Might just gave us a huge helping hand. That and you heard what the Mayor said earlier. Sighs…you two secure the perpetrators." Ethan said as he glanced between his partner and the two patrolmen with them. He glanced at Jack briefly and gave him a small reassuring smile which Jack returned with a smile of his own, hoping that Ethan would be able to get Yin to hold off.
As the two patrolmen got closer they both quietly thanked Jack quietly siting that there hadn't been any casualties and that they felt he had been the direct result of that, that tiny piece of information making Jack swell with a bit of pride as he heard it.
That happiness was quickly overridden however, because Jack got a bad feeling and then was hit with a massive stinging pain behind his eyes the feeling of a migraine hitting him and then disappearing.
The thing that wouldn't disappear would be the curiosity that he would have after what happened next.
'Behind You Young One!' a mature voice sounded out from inside Jack's own mind.
The voice had echoed in his head as the pain had flared but it hadn't mattered. That small thing had warned him, and he was already in motion as the back door to the trailer of the truck blew open. Jack in his haste had had to shove Ethan to the ground and wrapped himself around Yin his shield still on his back plate, a mere second before the chunk of the metal door that blew off hit him and knocked Yin and him off their feet to roll bodily with Yin coming out on top of him as they glanced up to see what had happened.
There was almost nothing left of the back metal door, and the truck itself was slightly on fire around the edges of what was left from the back of the truck.
The figure that had caused it stepped out and was already levitating in the air as the wings on his backpack were already going. His color motif was a light purple with patches of the bodysuit being matte black. The most eye catching color being the green of the stylized moth on his chest and the same green that were the panels he'd call the eyes of his helmet. He was carrying what looked to be a modified M16, and clearly had two pistols strapped to his upper thighs along with what looked like a utility belt around his waist. There separated plates at sections on his arms and legs and if Jack had to guess it was to protect his joints and possible vital areas, considering all the major veins and arteries in the arms and legs.
The guy now floating before them was Drury Walker, The Killer Moth. In the comics he was definitely a B or even C lister as far as 'Super' villains were concerned in the general sense, but right now Jack had four cops and two downed morons that could prove to be nice collateral damage if he didn't handle this creep.
Of course that was the moment the guy decided to make Jack feel really dumb for worrying.
"AH HA! I knew that this heist would draw the ire of you Batman! Come out and face me so that I can cement my name forever in history as 'the one who bested the bat'!" Moth declared as he started to move slightly forward while turning in a slow circle to take in his surroundings.
…
'This guy…is an absolute buffoon.' Jack thought as he carefully got Yin off of him and stood up to his full height as he charged himself back up to 8% having come off it from the tumble to the ground with Yin.
Moth was now literally shouting to the heavens for Batman to come and face him, and quite frankly Jack didn't know who was more confused…him or the police watching the same spectacle he was.
But Jack wasn't having any more of it.
Jack wound up and tossed the shield and it lodged itself into the center of Moth's pack and ceased all of its functionality, which caused him to fall five or six feet. Since the fool wasn't paying attention he fell badly and actually cracked one of his green eye visors.
He had recovered well enough and was up trying to point his rifle at someone, anyone really. But Jack quickly moved in and knocked the weapon from his hands and leveled his best deadpan stare at the criminal.
"…You…You're Not Batman!" Moth shouted out loud as he proceeded to actually take the time to thrust his right index finger almost directly into Jack's face.
'People all day today.' Jack thought irritably as he took a deep breathe and then took action.
He proceeded to grab Moth by the wrist of said hand and then did something no one expected…he reached up with his other hand and broke the offending finger.
"AHHHHHHH! WHAT?! WHY?!" Moth started screaming as he immediately clutched said appendage close to his chest to try and ward off the pain while he glared at Jack from behind his helmet.
Jack simply kept his unimpressed look on his face as he responded to the career criminal.
"You were being rude, and Another thing while we're at it. Stealing is wrong. Simon says… go to sleep." Jack said as he looked at the villain.
"...What?"
CRACK!
Moth hit the ground unceremoniously after Jack hit him with a right upper cut that actually took him off his feet and caused him to land on his side. Jack took another calming breath as he could feel the headache beginning to return, and then he moved forward and removed his shield from Moth's backpack.
'Hell of a first day on the job.' Jack thought as he clipped the shield back onto his back and then turned around to face all the officers. He quickly put on his best friendly smile before talking to them, hoping to avoid any awkwardness.
"You saved me." Yin stated as she stared at Jack holding her left arm against her stomach, a little bit of blood trailing and dripping onto the ground.
Seeing that Jack quickly glanced at the other officers. Bennett seemed just fine if a little disoriented, and so did one of the other patrolmen. The second patrolmen was simply holding his left ear and shaking his head, most probably aftershock from the explosion.
Jack moved forward and removed his shield and then belt so that he could get into his pack and brought out some medical supplies, and though she initially tried to stop him Jack successfully wrapped Yins arm after cleaning it a bit.
After finishing that he looked up, and saw that she had a slightly lighter look on her face from the professional borderline hostile look she had been wearing earlier.
"…Than…Thank You. For what it's worth I appreciate that. But make No mistake. I don't think this city needs you. If you get involved in a case that I'm running down again, Mayor's favor or not I will haul you in with cuffs on. Do we understand one another?" Yin said as she held Jacks gaze.
Jack could see the two patrolmen as well as Ethan all watching the scene while getting the perps lined up for pick up with exasperated faces. If Jack was a betting man he'd say that either Ethan would be talking to Yin in private, or one of the patrolmen would be talking and eventually word would get around and somebody would talk to Yin about what all had transpired here tonight.
Though Jack had fond memories of Yin he also knew one thing for a fact…Yin was a good cop. Probably one of the best in the GCPD. He'd need her on his side, and if he was lucky it would turn out like the show. She'd come around, he would just have to give her time. He was willing to wait it out.
With that he gave her the only response he felt appropriate.
"I understand your feelings detective. But if I see a situation headed south, I won't just stand by. I can't. Jack said with a small smile as he popped off a salute to all the officers before he took a running start and darted off to head back to the house.
Jack wouldn't see it as he left the scene, and Ethan and the two patrolmen would miss it as well. But Yin had stared at Jack's disappearing form, and as he passed from her sight she actually let off a small smile of her own.
GOTHAM CITY- INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 10 Miles from Blackgate Bridge
MARCH 5th 2120 EST
The fact that they had gotten him in court that fast with all the evidence they had, and the fact that he'd been apprehended by the new hero of Gotham had sealed his fate up tighter than a vault in Wayne manor. Turk was already on his way to Blackgate and he knew that now he was definitely gonna be in some deep shit, because he knew for a fact that Black Mask had boys inside of Blackgate just for this kind of situation.
He just hoped he'd get a quick death and not something atrocious like he knew had happened to his old buddy Benny.
He had told Benny not to take the job, because Benny had been stupid enough to actually go lookin for one. He'd found one, and they'd never found his body... only his head and it had taken the dental records to figure out that it was actually him. That particular thought shook Turk to his core still to this day.
What happened next...shook him up even more so.
The large light blue prison bus came to a sudden stop and the patrolmen that had been driving popped open the door, only for Turk and everyone else to hear a whisper like pop as the man fell back in his seat; clearly now dead.
The few occupants on the bus attempted to hide lower in their seats but the attempt was made futile by the fact of the way they were cuffed into the seats. Everyone immediately went stiff once a voice rang out to them.
"Franklin Short! We know that you are the second on the bus this evening. Your wife's name is Linda, and she lives on Lexington Ave Apartment 5A in the middle of West End! FRANKLIN! Linda would very much appreciate it if you laid down your gun and opened the god damn door. Because what's gonna happen if you don't, is that I got a buddy of mine… who's gonna firebomb your building. Franklin imma level with you here. Don't be cute. Don't try and be brave. All I want… is Turk Barret. Uncuff him, send him forward, and Open the damn door. Do this, and you and your wife both live and I'll even make sure that there's a nice little bonus in your mailbox come the end of this week…let's say a 50k bonus. If you don't do this, not only am I gonna make sure my buddy firebombs your old lady…imma shove the barrel of my gun down your throat and empty the magazine. Whadya say Franklin? What's it gonna be?" The mysterious voice rang out reverberating inside of the metal walls of the bus.
Turk now had a horrible feeling. He had a feeling that his death may be lookin a lot like Benny's here very shortly.
The guard didn't even hesitate. Turk attempted to dissuade him for all the good he knew it would do him. Franklin hit him in the gut with the stock of his shotgun and left him wheezing, he then pulled the keys and started to uncuff him. All the while the other inmates were now screaming offering up their services, and or begging for their lives.
Franklin marched him to the front gate separating them from getting off the bus and that's when Turk saw him.
The guy was wearing all black from his head all the way down to his toes. Black balaclava, black gun harness, black turtle neck, black gloves, boots, pants, you name it the man was completely blacked out. The only thing that stood out about him being his slightly brown skin under the balaclava, and his grey eyes that were catching what little light there was.
Franklin opened the door and attempted to push Turk through but the raised barrel of the gun had both of them frozen in place.
"Step forward. Both of You." The man stated as he held the gun even with Franklin's face as he slowly backed himself outta the bus.
Turk could hear Franklin gulp as he slowly shuffled them both forward trying to keep Turks slight frame between him and the gunman.
'This stupid motha fucka doesn't get it. We're both dead already.' Turk thought as they both finally descended the final step out onto the pavement.
The Gunman quickly shot Franklin in his left knee and as he screamed on the floor he decked him across the face causing his screams to taper off to minor moans.
"Stay on the floor. Take a nap if you want. The money will be there, no need to worry about that. Oh and before I forget. Mr. Sionis sends his thanks. With the money you'll receive a burner phone. Answer it when called. Franklin... I really hope your coherent enough to understand me when I say don't be cute. Black Mask owns you now. But hey…Doesn't have to be all bad. You'll be paid handsomely that I can attest too. Oh... and you might wanna roll to your right a lot a bit." The Gunman said as he grabbed a fist full of Turk's shirt and pushed him towards the back of the bus.
The whole time Turk was counting the seconds thinking this was how it ends, and he wasn't ashamed to say that he pissed himself. But that wasn't what happened.
The Gunman did put the barrel of the gun flush to his forehead but simply told him to hold still. He popped open the gas port and placed a pipe bomb in it, and then proceeded to grab Turk and walk him forward towards a parked black SUV that was sitting in the little nearby brush that existed.
He opened the back of the SUV revealing that the trunk was in fact empty, and then proceeded to wrap a black bag over Turk's head.
"Mr. Sionis would like to have a word with you."
Turk had to admit that he hadn't thought he could be more scared, but then he heard the blast from a distance and his mind began to fill with the possibilities of how this meeting was going to go.
He had the distinct feeling that he wasn't gonna be happy by the end of it.

GOTHAM CITY – GRANT'S GYM
MARCH 5th Same time as the break out.
Jack had made it back to the apartment and had already been looked over by Ted. Ted had relayed to him that Richard had said goodbye, but that he had some of his own business to take care of and was regretful he couldn't say it himself. Jack understood and had gone ahead and gotten cleaned up and put his uniform away. After the shower he had felt completely wiped out, and had no problem falling into bed.
He didn't know how long it had taken but he knew for a fact that he had fallen asleep.
What he hadn't expected to come from that, was to all of a sudden find himself looking at this white haired man with the two odd lightning bolt looking scars on his face.
"Hello, Torchbearer."
