Verdo couldn't help but roll his eyes whenever he heard someone refer to Professor Port as a teacher. To him, that title seemed too generous for the boisterous and haughty man who thought of himself as a god among men. Verdo couldn't even bring himself to call Port a huntsman, as that too would be far fetched. The man's stories were filled with grandiose tales, like the time he claimed to have single-handedly killed a bandel with his bare hands. But what made it even more unbelievable was that Port actually believed his own stories. Verdo could sense no hint of a lie coming from the man, who emanated a strong scent of aftershave and mustache wax.
As skeptical as he may have been, he couldn't completely dismiss the possibility that he was telling the truth. Though the thought of someone being able to kill a gigantic gorilla like Grimm with nothing but a straight razor and a pineapple seemed almost absurd to be true. After all, A bandel was a massive and powerful creature, and the idea of it being defeated by such unconventional weapons was hard to believe. Even with all the amazing things that huntsman could do.
The man was the huntsman who cried Beowulf, and had a knack for boasting about his own skills and accomplishments. Unfortunately, his constant self-promotion was causing the whole class to doze off. Almost everyone was struggling to stay awake, except for himself and a few others. Charlie was barely managing to keep his eyes open, while Sasha, with her advanced processor, was wide awake. Ilene, who had borrowed Veridian's semblance, was being kept awake at an intense level due to her heightened senses keeping everything up to a fifteen on the spectrum. Despite the overwhelming plethora of smells and sounds in the room, she was determined to stay close to Ruby and win their bet.
Said girl was a bundle of hyperactive teenage hormones and nerves, so naturally she was full of energy and excitement on her first day of school. However, her enthusiasm quickly faded when she walked into Port's class and realized that she wasn't the only one feeling underwhelmed by his stories. Even her usually bubbly friends Jaune and Nora were dead asleep, and the usually calm and collected Ren seemed to be struggling to find the knowledge in the professor's stories as he scribbled down notes.
"Uuuuuugh, this is so annoying," Verdo looked over at Ilene, who was burying her head under her hands and covering her ears. "I can hear the pencils scraping on paper as if they're right next to my ears."
Frustration and irritation were evident in her voice as she let out a heavy groan. Verdo knew how annoying the sound of pencils was – it was like listening to the cracking of glass and scraping of wood. He watched as she buried her head in her hands, trying to drown out the piercing sound. It was clear that she was struggling to concentrate amidst the constant noise. He couldn't help but feel a small sense of sympathy for Ilene.
"Not so fun, is it?" Verdo teased while Ielene glared at him, not finding this situation funny at all. Not when she had a huge migraine from his semblance.
"It's a pain. "She said, highly frustrated and "How do you deal with the constant barrage of noises and smells? Even when I close my eyes, they all start meshing together and I can see them in my head like exploding colors."
As he observed her struggling through the lecture, he knew exactly what she was going through. With a sympathetic understanding, his response was to discreetly offer her his flask, holding it up under the desk where she could see. He even slid it her way, hoping to provide some small relief. However, Sasha's glare from the other side of Ruby made him quickly retract the offer, not wanting to endure the wrath of the small yet intimidating cyborg.
"So you have Verdo's semblance?" The Red Reaper asked next to Ilene, who looked up from her hands at the small girl.
"Yes, Ruby. I already told you before I made a bet with him and now I have his incredible senses and they're overloading my brain." Ilene groaned from the sound of her own voice.
"So, what's that like?" Ruby asked in awe, and the older girl quirked a brow trying to find the right words to describe her woe.
"It's like...well, you have this aura of rose scent around you naturally that makes you smell like them, but faintly. But to me, it's like having a rose right under my nose, even if you were five feet away." she explained as best as she could.
"Ohhh, so I could just scoo...t?" Ruby asked as she tried to stealthily move a little further away from Ilene, but the girl quickly grabbed her not wanting to lose her air freshener.
"Nice try, flower blossom," Ilene said as she placed Ruby right next to her, keeping the girl close by with a locked arm. "You smell like roses, everyone else smells like sweat and cheap shampoo."
"What does port smell like?" asked Ruby, giggling. Ilene smirked in response.
"Mustache wax," she replied to which the young human air freshener laughed.
"I can believe that."
Verdo smiled watching as Ruby distracted Ilene during the "professor's" lecture on his youth. Before he began waxing poetic about the merits of a huntsman, something caught his ear - the loud, erratic... (buhbump buhbump buhbump ) growing anger of a familiar heart, looking at the source, his eyes landed on Weiss who was glaring up at someone. But to his surprise, it wasn't at him. Instead, it was at Ruby, who was leisurely chatting with Ilene as if there was nothing else to do. Verdo could sense the familiar frustration bubbling up inside of the heiress as she struggled to keep her composure.
That was until he heard the sound of heavy squeaking he turned his gaze upon a cage with a grimm being carted into the classroom.
It was a Boarbatusk, much smaller than the one they had faced in the Emerald Forest. However, it was clear what the professor intended to do. He wanted them to fight it because he didn't seem like the type to capture it and use it as a reference guide. He knew who would raise her hand first to fight it, and she would be fighting it angrily and irrationally. Unless he stopped her.
"So, who among you has the qualities of a huntsman? " The portly professor asked the class and Weiss stood up ready to raise her hand.
"I DO SIR!"
The white-haired heiress didn't even get her hand up halfway before someone had called out before her. She looked up to Veridian as he stood up in his seat, hand raised.
"Haha, then come on down, my boy. Grab your weapons from your locker and let's see what you have," he said, nodding to the professor.
Veridian looked down to Weiss, who just looked sullen. Well, more sullen than usual, especially toward him after he stole her chance at Thunder. After about ten minutes, he came back in his normal clothes and gear, holding Dante and Virgil. He stepped into the ring, or rather the classroom floor. Why the professor thought fighting a Grimm in the middle of a classroom with no preparations was a good idea, he had no clue. But still he put himself here and he'd do what he'd have too.
"WHOO GO VERDO!"
Ruby's voice echoed through the class as she cheered him on. She was holding a flag with team VICS blazened on it. He wondered where she had gotten the flag, but he didn't mind. He accepted her encouragement with a grateful wave before turning his attention back to the professor. Professor port stood next to the cage containing the boarbatusk as it grew eager for blood.
And with his blunderbuss axe, Port quickly slashed open the cage. The beast charged out squealing mad looking around before it saw him and charged forward .
But Verdo was ready and he ran towards the little piggy, leaping above its charge and shooting from Dante, at its flank. The piggy let out a shrill squeal as Verdo's attack penetrated its back side setting it on fire.
"Ouch, right up the ass," he heard Iene whisper as one of the few unprotected spots on the tusked Grimm spouted flames from its tail.
"Oh, hoho, fighting dirty, Mr. Agro?" Professor Port commented on his battle with the boar.
"It's a Grimm, it doesn't care how I fight, it wants to kill me," Verdo said, turning to the portly teacher.
"Perhaps, but maybe you should focus on what you're doing, young man," the man pointed to the Boarbatusk as it rounded the class and began to spin. Verdo could easily hear the scraping of the plates on its body against the floor. He quickly turned back to the Grimm and raised Virgil, aiming it at the floor. He fired several rounds at the ground before quickly aiming at the pig and firing more rounds. The ice dust quickly expanded upon its body and then melded with the ice dust on the floor. Despite its spinning, it suddenly was forced to stop as it was bonded to the ice upon the floor.
The class watched as the Boarbatusk thrashed in its expanding ice prison.
"Ah, clever boy!" Professor Port laughed , " Using the expansion of ice dust, even though the plates protected the boar from physical damage, they collected on the body and molded it into the dust on the floor."
Veridian marched towards the beast and expanded his flaming sword before impaling the monster with a single thrust, turning it into ash once again.
"Bye bye bacon bits." He said as he pulled his blade back and compacted it back into a gun.
"Whooo Verdo!"
Weiss couldn't help but hear Ruby's loud cheers from the side, urging her exe lover on. With a sneer towards her partner, Verdo turned to face Professor Port as he approached.
"Well done, my boy!" he exclaimed, clapping him on the shoulder. "You remind me of another exceptional vigilante young huntsman I once knew...Oh yes...me!"
But he didn't care what the professor had to say about his fight his focus was right on Weiss and her serious perriwinkle eyes as she gazed into his playful emerald greens.
Their staring contest was cut short as Port announced the end of class and the need to cover the assigned readings. Everyone began to file out, with Weiss wasting no time in getting away from the class, with Ruby watching her stomp away.
"What's her deal?" Ruby asked, confused and Ilene gave her two cents.
"It seems like she has a stick up her--"
"ILENE!" Sasha scolded her partner. Ruby got up from her seat to follow the heiress, while Ilene shook her blue hair over her shoulder and playfully woke up Charlie who had fallen asleep during Verdos fight.
"What did I miss?" he asked, rubbing the sleep from his eyes, others were surprised that he had slept through the blasts of several large handguns before he noticed that all of his other teammates were paying attention to something else.
The three were too focused on listening to Weiss and Ruby's conversation outside using their super hearing to listen to the conversation. And Verdo listened to Weiss belittling her partner and criticizing her for being a young girl, he couldn't help but follow after them, leaving Sasha to shake her head and Charlie to stand there, perplexed.
"Seriously, what did I miss?" The large boy asked again.
"I'll tell you after the show."Ilene said to her giant companion. They followed their leader out into the hall, curious to know what he had in store for them.
Verdo stood silently in the corner of the room, his eyes fixed on Weiss who was giving Ruby an unfiltered piece of her mind. He watched as Weiss, chastised Ruby for her actions as childish. Verdo had always respected Weiss for her intelligence and strong personality. And now, as she stood before Ruby, her piercing gaze and sharp words spoke volumes of her true character, a pain in the Fadish ass.
Ruby, on the other hand, stood with her head bowed, her lower lip trembling slightly as she tried to fight back tears. Verdo could see the guilt and regret in her eyes. But it was unwarranted Weiss was treating Ruby as if being a child was a crime. And he couldn't stand to see that defeated look in her eye's.
"I thought you were up for teamwork and working together?" Ruby asked meekly her words were hesitant, almost as if she was afraid of the reaction she would receive from Weiss.
"Not a team led by an immature child," Weiss said, turning up her nose and away from Ruby who looked so sad .
"Yeah, Weiss, what happened to not being difficult for your team?" Verdo said, his tone laced with frustration as he approached the two of them standing next to Ruby. Staring defiantly at Snow Fox who glared back at him with her arms crossed and fire in her eyes.
"I am not being difficult for my team, I am simply trying to ensure that we are all prepared for the challenges ahead," She stated firmly. Her success was her top priority and she didn't care who she hurt to get it.
"And this little girl isn't fit to lead that team." she said, wagging her finger at Ruby, who cowered behind him, reminding him too much of his little sisters back home.
"Jeez, you're still such an entitled snob," Verdo said, crossing his arms as the class was exiting the classroom to see their argument as Weiss shrieked.
"EXCUSE ME ?!"
"You heard me," he said spitefully, not seeing as Ruby tried to back away from this fight. "You think that all your training makes you capable, and your wealth and your name means you're owed something."
His voice was filled with bitterness and resentment, as if he had been waiting for this opportunity to unleash his pent-up frustrations upon Weiss. She had always been proud of her accomplishments and the privileges that came with her family's name, but now it seemed like they were being used against her."
"I am not banking on my family name, I have worked to be here!" She shouted at him, she was aware that he was well aware of her struggles and the hard work she had put in to reach where she was today on her own merits.
"So has Ruby. She wouldn't have been allowed entry to Beacon several years early if she wasn't ready," he argued. For Ruby's sake, she felt a little blush on her cheeks as everyone heard that. They were already talking about rumors about her and such as the two former lovers kept arguing.
"Well isn't that just peachy? She managed to catch one small-time criminal, and suddenly she's deemed fit to lead? Give me a break. Just because she can take down a petty thief doesn't mean she has the wisdom, experience, and maturity required to be a leader. " Weiss argued knowing about her victory against Roman Torchwick but she was hardly impressed when Ruby had told her.
"You're ragging on her for acting like a kid, yet you're a kid yourself," he said, referencing her age. After all, she wasn't that much older than her partner.
"Besides, were you going to fight that Boarbatusk just to prove that you're the better huntress? That seems pretty petty and childish to me."
"And why exactly did you fight it then?" She asked him accusingly, He could feel her eyes boring into him, waiting for an explanation.
"Just to show off for everyone as you usually do for your showboating desire."
"Too fight boredom, why else? Weren't you there for that man's lecture?" he said as he leaned against the wall, his eyes holding a cynical glint. He didn't want to reveal the real reason for stepping into her fight, instead choosing to insinuate that it was a mere distraction.
He leaned in close and whispered
"Besides, we both know that you really want to be a leader because you want to impress your dad, But let's face it, your father doesn't give a damn about your dream of becoming a huntress."
Verdo could sense her whole body tensing, her fingers twitching with the urge to summon Myrtenaster, with her scroll and use it to skewer him for his audacity of bringing up her relationship with her father. Weiss clenched her fists, trying to control her emotions but with Verdo there was something that just made her more furious than even ruby.
"How dare you, you spiteful peasant!" Weiss shrieked at him with all of her hate.
Ruby couldn't believe what was happening. She felt a strange mix of guilt and frustration as she watched the argument between her two friends escalate. It was as if she had been the one to start it, even though she knew she hadn't. She couldn't understand why they were fighting over . Just as she thought it couldn't get any worse, she felt a cold presence behind her and turned to see the headmaster watching them with a disapproving look.
"And what happened here?" Ozpin asked as he took a sip of his coffee, he asked with a neutral tone, Ruby was hesitant to answer, knowing that it was all her fault, but at the same time, she couldn't be sure. Her voice wavered as she tried to explain, unable to hide the guilt in her face. The weight of the situation weighed heavily on her, and she couldn't even speak to Ozpin.
He stood there, watching the silver-eyed teen gawk at him in disbelief. He could see that she had no answer for his unexpected appearance. Realizing that she was at a loss for words, he decided to ignore her and instead turned his attention to the two former lovers who were still caught up in their heated argument. They didn't even notice his presence as he walked up to the oblivious pair. Who were hashing it out as though they were alone about their past.
"Why would you bring that up? We were in that situation because of you and your desire to cause trouble." Weiss
said turning her nose up at him.
"Yeah, and you followed me and caused plenty of trouble yourself, acting pretty childish at times. So why are you giving Ruby crap for enjoying life? She's just a kid, so what? We're all still kids." Verdo shot back at her. they were all indeed still just children.
"This isn't about Ruby at all, is it? You just wanted to come and cause me strife."
"Oh, you're not that important to me anymore, Snow Fox." He loved the throbbing vein on her forehead as she grew redder each time he used that old nickname.
"STOP CALLING ME SNOW FOX!" she seethed as she glared at him. "Ozpin made a mistake making you and Ruby leaders. You're both just-"
"May I ask what is going on here?" The sudden voice broke the tense exchange that had engulfed the hallway. Verdo and Weiss turned around to see the headmaster standing there, his stern expression betraying his usual calm demeanor. By his side stood Ruby, her face worried that the headmaster's presence was brought on by her making Weiss mad and that her anger would only deepen.
Ozpin looked at the heiress and the young malcontent waiting for an answer from either.
"...Nothing at all professor ...a small disagreement."
Weiss turned on her heel and began walking away, she said nothing else. Her silence was tinged with a hint of defiance and determination but not for the headmaster it was for Verdo, her tone of voice conveying the message that she would not let herself be goaded by him again. Despite the watchful gaze of the head master, she chose to retreat gracefully, saving face and biding her time. With her head held high, she left the situation behind.
The elder huntsman let out a deep sigh as he leaned heavily on his cane.
"Well, that went poorly," he muttered, with disappointment as they watched her leave.
Verdo could tell that a verbal lashing however neutral was imminent glanced over at Ruby, who was lost in thought, contemplating Weisses' words. Despite her attempts to mask it, he could tell that she still blamed herself for all of this happening .
Ruby felt a hand on her shoulder and saw Verdo looking at her gently.
"She's just mad she isn't the leader Ruby." He assured her. calmly kind of like an older brother would ."She always just had things go her way and has issues when they don't."
He knew from personal experience how she could be. She hadn't been kidding when she said she could be difficult. Her whole family was difficult.
"Perhaps," Ozpin said sternly, looking at them with a serious expression, "while I can commend and understand coming to your friend's aid during an argument, it shows poor form to only do so because you wanted to annoy Ms. Schnee."
"But sir I just wanted to help ..."
Veridian tried to express that he wanted to help Ruby, but the man's eyes indicated that he wasn't going to believe it. So, he just cringed and scratched his badger ears.
The teens shifted uncomfortably under Ozpins dissapointing gaze it was harsh enough to affect them both even though it was directed only to Veridian.
"Professor, did you make a mistake?" Ruby asked, full of doubt about her leadership.
Verdo knew that she wasn't a bad choice. She took charge during the initiation and had proven herself. Sure, the plan was a little outlandish, but it had worked, hadn't it? Even Weiss had been impressed. Hell, even Ozpin was impressed enough to give her the chance. He must have seen something, hadn't he?
"That remains to be seen, Ms. Rose," he said, confusing the girl. "I mean, it's only been one day and I have made more mistakes than any man, woman, or child on this planet. But your appointment as leader is not one I count among them...do you?"
Ruby couldn't help but smile up at him as He returned the smile before turning to Verdo, the badger quivered slightly. Ruby noticed the same look in her headmaster's eyes that her father had when scolding her.
"Mr. Agro, you may have never desired to be a leader. However, even a lax leader does not deliberately seek out conflicts for the sake of a personal grudge. It is difficult for me to believe that you inserted yourself into the discussion between Ms. Sanches and Ms. Rose out of pure altruism."
Verdo cringed under the mans gaze as he berated him.
"Now, if you do not wish to hold the title of leader, I will give it to someone else on your team. However, this will only happen if you prove to be inadequate at the task, not for these petty childish acts. If such incidents happen again, not only will you receive detention with Ms. Good Witch, but your entire team will as well."
Verdo nearly gawked at the man.
"I do not care if that seems unfair, nor do I care that you're James' son. This will not stand. Am I clear?"
Verdo had been stared down by the best of the best: the strongest, sternest, coldest hardass ever to come out of the Atlas academy but he never buckled ..at least after he got used to it. Yet, looking into the headmaster's autumn eyes, Verdo actually felt a shiver run down his spine at the man's neutral expression. No wonder his father respected the man so damn much.
"Yes sir." he nodded quickly
Ozpin offered a kinder smile than before looking to them both.
"Being a leader isn't just a title that you carry into battle," he looked at them both, "it's a constant burden that you bear. And if you're not performing at your best, not just in combat, but as a person, what reason do people have to follow you?"
As he uttered his words, he could see the impact they had on the pair of them. He let them sink in for a moment, giving them time to process and absorb his message. Verdo couldn't deny that the man had a point, and yet he couldn't help but feel a twinge of doubt in his own abilities as a leader.
"You have both been given a daunting responsibility, even if you did not desire it. You must decide for yourselves if you can bear it, and how. Now off to your next class, you two."
The professor's statement hung in the air as he walked away, leaving the two of them alone in the halls. They stood there in silence, both lost in thought about what had just been said. The weight of Ozpin's words lingered, filling the space between them with an uncomfortable tension. Neither of them knew what to say to the other, their minds consumed with the impact of the professor's words.
Both of their respective teams had been anxiously waiting for He and Ruby to return, along with Jaune and his team as well with concern Verdo could see with concern and curiosity on their faces. After their intense conversation with Ozpin he couldn't blame them. It was probably the biggest news of drama and on the first day no less this was going to be fun to explain to them all.
