Ballonlea Gym Battles (Part One)
The next morning, after everyone has breakfast, they all quickly head to the Ballonlea Stadium where they were going to try and earn their next gym badges. Once there, they go inside and head over to a staff member.
"Hi, we're all here for gym battles." said Lincoln.
"Very well." said the staff member. "Who's going first?"
"That would be me." said Lola as she steps forward past everyone else.
"Please enter the Gym Test area to get started." said the staff member.
"Do your best, Lola." said Sam.
"You know I will." said Lola as she follows the staff member into the test area. She soon sees the Gym Leader, Opal; talking to a staff member. The two turn towards Lola when they hear her approaching.
"Hello, young lady." said Opal.
"Hello to you as well, dear Opal." Lola replies as she does a curtsy. Opal observes her with interest.
"So formal." said Opal. "And I've seen you in action before as well as your attire outside of gym battles and I must say that you have potential."
"Oh, dearie; I hear that a lot." said Lola with a chuckle. "And could you narrow down what sort of 'potential' I have? I have so much of it in many areas."
"You see, I'm looking for a succesor to take over as the Gym Leader of the Ballonlea Gym when I retire." said Opal. "You see, my Gym Test also serves as an audition to find one."
"Really?" asked Lola with interest.
"Yes." said Opal. "You're Gym Test is simply to battle several trainers and answer the questions that they'll ask. And a little fairy magic will make things interesting as well."
"What do you mean?" asked Lola.
"If you answer a question correctly, your Pokemon will gain a power increase; answer wrong, and they'll get weaker." said Opal.
"I believe I'll be up to the challenge." said Lola as she looks at her fingernails.
"Well-mannered, confident, and has a love for pink; I see much potential with you, young lady." said Opal. "Now if you're ready, please step out onto the stage."
"The stage." said Lola as she thinks back to all her pageants. "Where I am truly at home." Opal heads to a table in front of the stage as Lola steps out onto it. Soon, a trainer, wearing the same uniform that Lola's wearing steps out onto it.
"All right, OK." said Opal. "It's time to start your audition to see if you're worthy of becoming the Fairy-type Gym Leader."
"I am Annette; I am your first challenger." said the trainer now known as Annette.
"A pleasure to meet you." said Lola as she does a curtsy. Annette takes out a pokeball and throws it, releasing a small, pink, birdlike Pokemon. Lola takes out her Rotom Phone and points it at the Pokemon.
"Spritzee, the Perfume Pokemon. The scent its body gives off enraptures those who smell it. Noble ladies had no shortage of love for Spritzee." said Lola's Rotom Phone.
"Note to self: Find a Spritzee for myself." said Lola before she takes out a pokeball and tosses it, releasing her Primarina.
"What sort of Pokemon is that?" asked Opal, never seeing an Alolan Pokemon before.
"This is my enchanting Primarina." said Lola. "She's part water, part fairy types."
"So, you have a fairy type as well?" asked Opal.
"Opal, dearie; I have several fairy types with me." said Lola.
'This one truly has potential.' Opal thinks to herself.
"Primarina, use Aqua Jet!" said Lola. Her Primarina propels herself at Annette's Spritzee and slams into it, sending it flying back until it lands in front of its trainer's feet; it slowly floats up.
"Spritzee, use Draining Kiss!" said Annette. Spritzee flies at Primarina and kisses her, draining Primarina of some of her stamina which is used to heal itself.
"Primarina, use Bubble Beam!" said Lola. Primarina releases a stream of bubbles from her mouth that hit Spritzee and knock it out.
"Impressive." said Opal. Annette returns her Spritzee to its pokeball. She then takes out another one and tosses it, releasing a Pokemon with a light pink body with dark pink fur on its head, along with a red cherry on top. Lola takes out her Rotom Phone and points it at the Pokemon.
"Slurpuff, the Meringue Pokemon, and the evolved form of Swirlix. Slurpuff's fur contains a lot of air, making it soft to the touch and lighter than it looks." said Lola's Rotom Phone.
"Question!" said Annette. "Do you know about Fairy type weaknesses?"
"I believe steel and poison types are fairy type weaknesses." said Lola.
"Correct!" said Annette. Suddenly, a surge of energy rises up from Primarina. "Now Primarina's attack powers have increased."
"Primarina, use Sparkling Aria!" said Lola. Primarina sings a beautiful melody as she creates a giant ball of water above her that explodes into hundreds of bubbles that are propelled at the Slurpuff, and do enough damage to knock it out.
"Wonderful!" said Opal.
"It seems that I'm defeated." said Annette as she returns her Slurpuff to its pokeball and Lola returns her Primarina to hers; Annette then hands Lola pokedollars, and walks off the stage. Soon, another Gym Trainer comes out and is ready for battle. She throws a pokeball, releasing a Pokemon that looked like a puff of light pink cotton candy with small feet. Lola takes out her Rotom Phone and points it at the Pokemon.
"Swirlix, the Cotton Candy Pokemon. The sweet smell of cotton candy perfumes Swirlix's fluffy fur. This Pokémon spits out sticky string to tangle up its enemies." said Lola's Rotom Phone.
"Another Pokemon I want." said Lola. She takes out another pokeball and throws it, releasing her Alolan Ninetales.
"Such an unusual-looking Ninetales." said Opal.
"This is an Alolan Ninetales; she's part ice, part fairy." said Lola.
"Incredible!" said Opal.
"Ninetales, use Ice Beam!" said Lola. Ninetales opens her mouth and releases a beam of ice energy that hits Swirlix; her body becomes frozen.
"Swirlix, use Aromatherapy!" said the trainer. Swirlix releases a mist from its body that shatters its icy prison.
"Ninetales, use Aurora Beam!" said Lola. Ninetales fires off a multicolored beam of energy that hits Swirlix and knocks it out; Swirlix's trainer returns her Pokemon to its pokeball, pulls out another one and tosses it, releasing a Pokemon that looked a little like Spritzee, but bigger with a magenta body that had a pink layer of fluff around most of it, along with having multiple hornlike protrusions coming out of its head. Lola points her Rotom Phone at the new Pokemon.
"Aromatisse, the Fragrance Pokemon, and the evolved form of Spritzee. The scents Aromatisse can produce range from sweet smells that bolster allies to foul smells that sap an opponent's will to fight." said Lola's Rotom Phone.
"Question!" said the trainer. "What was the previous trainer's name?"
"Annette." said Lola.
"Correct!" said the trainer. A surge of power rises up from Alola Ninetales. "Now your Pokemon has increased speed!"
"Thank you very much." said Lola. "Ninetales, use Extrasensory!" Ninetales' eyes glowd gold before releasing a circular beam of energy from her forehead that hits Aromatisse and starts bending its body around, doing damage.
"Aromatisse, use Flail!" said the trainer. Aromatisse starts flailing around, hitting Alola Ninetales in the process.
"How barbaric." said Lola. "Okay, Ninetales; use Ice Beam!" Alola Ninetales fires off a beam of ice energy that hits Aromatisse, encasing it in ice and knocking it out.
"I am defeated." said the trainer as she slumps while she and Lola return their Pokemon to their pokeballs; the trainer gives Lola pokedollars and walks off as another trainer steps out onto the stage.
"I wil be your last opponent." said the trainer as she takes out a pokeball, releasing a bipedal Pokemon with a magenta upper body with purple hair, a green lower body, and a sharp nose, along with claws. Lola points her Rotom Phone at the Pokemon.
"Morgrem, the Devious Pokemon, and the evolved form of Impidimp. With sly cunning, it tries to lure people into the woods. Some believe it to have the power to make crops grow." said Lola's Rotom Phone.
"I can respect a little deviousness." said Lola. "It adds to someone's intrigue."
'I really like this one.' Opal thought to herself. Lola takes out a pokeball and tosses it, releasing her Sylveon.
"Sylveon, use Swift!" said Lola. Sylveon releases a barrage of stars out of nowhere that pelt the Morgrem, dealing damage.
"Morgrem, use Sucker Punch!" said the trainer. Morgrem moves at Sylveon and punches her, not doing a lot.
"Sylveon, use Draining Kiss to take back what Morgrem took away!" said Lola. Sylveon moves at Morgrem and kisses it on the cheek, draining it of stamina that's used to heal herself. "And finally, use Quick Attack!" Sylveon quickly moves at Morgrem and slams into it, knocking it out. Morgrem's trainer returns it to its pokeball, then takes out another one and throws it, releasing a Gardevoir.
"Question!" said the trainer. "What do I like to eat for breakfast every morning? Curry or omelets?"
"How am I supposed to know that?!" asked Lola. But seeing she had no other options, she decides to take a wild guess. "Well, omelets are more of a breakfast food, so I'll go with that."
"Correct!" said the trainer. A surge of energy rises up from Sylveon. "Now your defenses are increased."
"Sylveon, use Quick Attack!" said Lola. Sylveon quickly moves at Gardevoir and slams into it.
"Gardevoir, use Hypnosis!" said the trainer. Gardevoir releases hypnotic waves at Sylveon.
"Dodge and use Swift!" said Lola. Sylveon leaps to the side, avoiding the waves and launches a barrage of stars at Gardevoir, hitting it.
"Gardevoir, use Psybeam!" said the trainer. Gardevoir releases a beam of psychic energy at Sylveon, hitting her.
"Sylveon, use Disarming Voice!" said Lola. Sylveon opens her mouth and releases a purple beam of heart-shaped waves at Gardevoir, hitting her, and knocking it out.
"I have lost." said the trainer. She returns her Gardevoir to its pokeball, hands Lola pokedollars, and walks off the stage.
"Marvelous!" said Opal. "You have earned the right to challenge me to a gym battle. Please exit stage right to get to the stadium arena."
"Thank you." said Lola as she takes a bow. As Opal walks off to get ready, Lola goes to where she was told to and was directed towards a flight of stairs leading up.
Back in Royal Woods, everyone was watching Lola in action.
"She passed her Gym Test!" said Rita.
"Was there ever a doubt?" asked Lynn Sr.
"That Opal woman seemed interested in your daughter." said Howard McBride.
"Well, our Lola is a remarkable young lady." said Lynn Sr.
Later in the stadium's battle arena, Lola was stepping out onto the field with her family and friends cheering for her.
"You got this, Lola!" said Lana.
"We're, totes, rooting for you!" said Leni.
Opal and Lola walk to the center of the arena and look at each other.
"I am very impressed with you, young lady." said Opal.
"What can I say?" asked Lola. "I am a very talented lady."
"Let's see how you do in a Pokemon battle with me." said Opal. She and Lola walk to opposite ends of the field as an official steps to the center of it.
"This gym battle will be against the Gym Leader Madam Opal, and the Gym Challenger Lola Loud." said the official. "Both trainers will use four Pokemon. Whichever trainer is able to defeat all of their opponent's Pokemon will be the winner. Let the match begin."
Opal takes out a pokeball and tosses it, releasing a pale yellow Pokemon with a black ponytail that's actually a second pair of long jaws coming out the back of its head.
"What's that?" asked Lincoln as he takes out his Rotom Phone.
"Mawile, the Deciever Pokemon. It chomps with its gaping mouth. Its huge jaws are actually steel horns that have been transformed." said Lincoln's Rotom Phone.
"And Opal's first Pokemon is a Mawile." said the announcer. "What will Lola bring out?"
Lola takes out a pokeball and tosses it, releasing her Primarina.
"And Lola's first Pokemon is a beautiful Primarina." said the announcer. "Will it be able to handle Opal's mighty Mawile?" Speaking of Opal's Mawile; its ponytail jaws growl at Primarina, making her nervous.
"That Mawile must have the Intimidate ability." said Lincoln.
"That won't stop us!" said Lola. "Primarina, use Aqua Jet!" Primarina propels herself at the Mawile and slams into it.
"Mawile, use Stockpile!" said Opal. Her Mawile starts drawing energy into itself, making its body bulk up and increasing her defense.
"Primarina, use Bubble Beam!" said Lola. Primarina releases a spray of bubbles from her mouth that hit the Mawile, not doing as much damage as it would, thanks to its increased defense.
"Mawile, use Spit Up!" said Opal. Mawile opens its ponytail jaws, and it releases a blast of energy that hit Primarina.
"Primarina, use Sparkling Aria!" said Lola. Primarina sung a beautiful melody as she forms a giant ball of water that explodes into multiple bubbles that are propelled at the Mawile, hitting it, and doing enough damage to knock it out.
"Mawile is unable to battle. Primarina is the winner." said the official.
"And Primarina has defeated Opal's Mawile!" said the announcer.
"Magnificent performance, Primarina." said Lola, making her Pokemon take a bow.
"Way to go, Lola!" said Lana.
"You can do it, dudette!" said Luna.
Back at Ballonlea Stadium, Opal was returning her Mawile to its pokeball.
"You were wonderful, Mawile." said Opal before putting Mawile's pokeball away.
"Opal's down to three Pokemon." said the announcer. "What will she use next?" Opal pulls out another pokeball and tosses it, releasing a Pokemon that looked like three gray lumpy balls joined together, two of the balls had faces with green beards and tall top hats that had smoke coming out of them like smokestacks.
"What is that?" asked Clyde as he takes out his Rotom Phone and points it at the Pokemon.
"Weezing, the Poison Gas Pokemon, and the evolved form of Koffing. Long ago, during a time when droves of factories fouled the air with pollution, Weezing changed into this form for some reason." said Clyde's Rotom Phone.
"Question!" said Opal. "What is my nickname? The magic-user or the wizard?"
"Well, the wizard seems more like a nickname, so I'll go with that." said Lola.
"Correct!" said Opal. A surge of energy rises up from Primarina. "Now Primarina's speed has increased."
"Primarina, use Water Gun!" said Lola. Primarina releases a spray of water from her mouth that hits the Weezing.
"Weezing, use Clear Smog!" said Opal. Weezing releases a large puff of vapor that hits Primarina, dealing super effective damage.
"How dare you hurt my Primarina!" shouts Lola. "Primarina, use Hyper Voice!" Primarina releases a high-pitched soundwave that hits Weezing, knocking it back.
"Weezing, use Sludge!" said Opal. Weezing spews out a blob of black slime that hits Primarina, dealing super effective damage.
"Primarina!" shouts Lola. A large aura of blue energy flares up from Primarina.
"That's Primarina's Torrent ability!" said Clyde.
"Primarina, use Sparkling Aria!" said Lola. Primarina makes another ball of water that once again explodes into a lot of bubbles that rain down with more force than the last one due to Torrent powering it up, hitting Weezing, making it crash to the ground unconscious.
"Weezing is unable to battle. Primarina is the winner." said the official.
"And in a close battle, Primarina has taken down Opal's Weezing!" said the announcer. "Can it keep up its momentum and bring Lola the victory in this Gym Battle?"
"Primarina did it!" said Lola.
"Yeah, but she's not looking too hot." said Luna, noticing that Primarina is looking exhausted.
"I hope she'll be okay." said Lincoln.
Back at the Loud house, everyone was supporting Lola.
"Lola's doing well." said Lynn Sr.
"Yeah, but Primarina looks tired." said Lynn Jr.
"Lola should be careful." said Lori.
Back at Ballonlea Stadium, Lola was looking at her Primarina with concern.
"Do you want to take a break, Primarina?" asked Lola. Primarina shakes her head in response. "If that's what you want; but please be careful." Opal returns her Weezing to its pokeball.
"Rest up, Weezing." said Opal before putting Weezing's pokeball away. "I must say, young lady; your Primarina is quite a spectacular Pokemon."
"A spectacular Pokemon for a spectacular lady." said Lola as she does a hair flip.
"I love that attitude." said Opal. She takes out another pokeball and tosses it, releasing a white, winged Pokemon with blue and red marks on its chest, and feathery, red and blue-tipped protrusions coming out from the front of its head.
"What is that?" asked Ronnie Anne as she takes out her Rotom Phone and points it at the Pokemon.
"Togekiss, the Jubilee Pokemon, and the final evolved form of Togepi. Known as a bringer of blessings, it's been depicted on good-luck charms since ancient times." said Ronnie Anne's Rotom Phone.
"Another fairy type I want." said Lola.
"Question!" said Opal. "How old am I? 16 or 88?"
"Ummm... 16?" Lola answers, not wanting to risk offending Opal.
"Ha! I love that answer!" said Opal. A surge of energy rises up from Primarina. "Now her attack powers are increased!"
"Primarina, hurry and use Aqua Jet!" With whatever strength she had left, she propels herself at the Togekiss while coated in water and slams into it.
"Togekiss, use Air Slash!" said Opal. Togekiss flaps its wings, releasing a large air blade that hits Primarina and knocks her out.
"Primarina is unable to battle. Togekiss is the winner." said the official.
"And Togekiss defeats Lola's mighty and majestic Primarina!" said the announcer. "Can it keep up this momentum and bring Miss Opal victory?"
"Primarina." Lola softly says as she runs over to her fallen Pokemon.
"Poor Primarina." said Leni.
"I hope she and Lola will be okay." said Clyde.
"She's strong!" said Lana. "She won't let this stop her!"
Back at the Loud house, everyone there was continuing to watch Lola's battle.
"Oh, Primarina." Rita softly says.
"Lola really cares about that Pokemon." said Lori.
"She will not take that lying down." said Lynn Jr.
"That's bad news for Opal." said Luan.
Back at Ballonlea Stadium, Lola was stroking Primarina's ponytail, making her weakly open her eyes.
"You were wonderful, Primarina." said Lola. She then returns her Pokemon to her pokeball. She then looks at Opal with fire in her eyes, surprising her. "You made a BIG mistake hurting Primarina!"
"I love that passion!" said Opal.
"Lola's down to three Pokemon! What will she use next?" asked the announcer. Lola walks back to her spot and pulls out another pokeball, she tosses it, releasing her Alolan Ninetales. "And Lola's next Pokemon is a strange-looking Ninetales."
"Ninetales, let's do this for Primarina!" said Lola. "Use Ice Beam!" Alolan Ninetales fires off a beam of ice energy that hits Togekiss, doing super effective damage, and freezing her solid.
"Togekiss, use Fairy Wind!" said Opal, but her Pokemon couldn't hear her while encased in ice.
"Ninetales, use Ice Shard!" said Lola. Alolan Ninetales conjurs up chunks of ice and launches them at Togekiss, shattering its icy prison, dealing super effective damage, and knocks it out.
"Togekiss is unable to battle. Ninetales is the winner." said the official.
"And Lola's Ninetales defeats Opal's Togekiss!" said the announcer. "Now Miss Opal's down to her last Pokemon! What will she do?"
"Keep it up, Lola!" said Lincoln.
"Just one more to go!" said Ronnie Anne.
Back at the Loud house, everyone there was cheering Lola on.
"She's got this in the bag!" said Lynn Jr.
"It's not over until it's over." said Lynn Sr.
"We don't know what that Opal lady's last Pokemon is." said Luan.
"Lola will win!" said Lynn Jr.
Back at Ballonlea Stadium, Opal was returning her Togekiss to its pokeball.
"Relax now, Togekiss." said Opal. She puts the pokeball away and pulls out her last one; she tosses it, releasing an Alcremie.
"OOOOOOH! An Alcremie!" said Lola as she tries to resist the urge to run to it and start licking.
"And Miss Opal's last Pokemon is an Alcremie!" said the announcer. "Will it be able to defeat Lola's Ninetales?"
In the bleachers, most of Lola's friends and family were trying to restrain a ravenous Lana who wanted to lick Alcremie.
"Settle down, Lana!" said Lincoln.
"We don't want to probably get Lola disqualified!" said Clyde. People around them were looking at the scene with confusion.
Back on the battlefield, Opal returns her Alcremie to its pokeball, then uses a Dynamax Band she was wearing to enlarge it; she then heaves it as hard as she could, releasing her now Gigantamaxed Alcremie.
"And Miss Opal has Gigantamaxed her Alcremie!" said the announcer. "Can it 'cream' Lola's Ninetales?"
"Let us see you handle my Gigantamaxed Pokemon, young lady." said Opal.
"You got it!" said Lola as she returns her Alolan Ninetales to her pokeball. She uses her Dynamax Band to enlarge it, then tosses it to release her now Dynamaxed Pokemon.
"It's Dyanmaxed Pokemon vs. Gigantamaxed Pokemon!" said the announcer. "Let's see who triumphs!"
"Ninetales, let's turn Alcremie into an ice cream cake!" said Lola.
"Question!" said Opal. "What is my favorite color? Pink or purple?" Lola then looks her over and notices her boa, then remembers that all the trainers she battled wore the same colors as Opal.
"Is it... purple?" asked Lola.
"Correct!" said Opal.
"Yeah, if pink was your favorite color, then you'd be wearing a pink boa." said Lola.
"Quite observant of you, Miss Lola." said Opal with a smile. A surge of energy rises up from Lola's Alolan Ninetales. "Now your Pokemon's defenses are increased!"
"Ninetales, use Max Hailstorm!" said Lola. Alolan Ninetales summons up massive chunks of ice and drops them on the Gigantamaxed Alcremie, dealing damage; after that, it started to hail.
"And Lola's Max Hailstorm has created an actual hailstorm inside the stadium!" said the announcer.
"Alcremie, use Max Starfall!" said Opal. Alcremie summons up giant stars and drops them onto Alolan Ninetales that explode into pink smoke; a pink fog then covers the field. Suddenly, the Alcremie takes damage from the hail.
"Ninetales, use Max Mindstorm!" said Lola. Alolan Ninetales summons up giant waves of psychic energy which come down onto Alcremie, damaging her, and causing the energy within her to explode, making her shrink down and return to her normal state, unconscous.
"Alcremie is unable to battle. Ninetales is the winner. The winner of the Gym Battle is the Gym Challenger Lola Loud." said the official.
"Incredible! Lola's Ninetales has defeated Miss Opal's Alcremie, earning her the victory!" said the announcer.
"We did it, Ninetales!" said Lola. Alolan Ninetales returns to her normal size and Lola runs up and hugs her.
"She won!" said Leni.
"I knew she would!" said Lana.
"We all did!" said Lincoln.
Back at the Loud house, everyone was cheering for Lola's victory.
"She did it!" cheered Lynn Sr.
"That was literally amazing!" said Lori.
"She 'creamed' that Alcremie; Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha; get it?" said Luan.
Back at Ballonlea Stadium, Opal just returned her Alcremie to its pokeball.
"You did your best, Alcremie." said Opal. She then puts Alcremie's pokeball away and walks over to Lola. "That was a splendid match, Lola."
"Thank you." said Lola as she does a curtsy. Opal reaches into a pocket and pulls out a Fairy Badge.
"As proof of your victory, I present you with this Fairy Badge." said Opal as she hands it, along with pokedollars, to Lola.
"Thank you very much." said Lola.
"Dearie; walk with me." said Opal. Lola looks at her with confusion, then complies with her request.
Half an hour later in the lobby, everyone was waiting for Lola to show up.
"Where is she?" asked Luna.
"Did something happen to her?" asked Clyde.
"What did Opal want with Lola?" asked Lucy. Just then, they see Lola coming out through a door with a large book in her hand and run over to her.
"There you are!" said Lincoln.
"We were worried!" said Lana.
"Sorry to keep you all waiting." said Lola.
"What's with that book?" asked Leni.
"Miss Opal gave it to me." said Lola. "It contains information on fairy type Pokemon, and the locations of all Pokemon Dens that have them inside."
"That was nice." said Sam.
"Why did she give you that?" asked Lana.
"She has chosen me." said Lola with a look of pride on her face.
"Chosen?" Leni replied.
"Once I finish my journey with you all; I am to report to her for training." said Lola.
"Why?" asked Lincoln.
"She picked me to be her successor when she retires from being a Gym Leader." said Lola.
"WOW!" said Clyde.
"That is so cool!" said Ronnie Anne.
"What about pageantry?" asked Luna.
"The crowds from Pokemon battles are way bigger than any pageant I've ever done, Miss Opal told me how much money Gym Leaders make which is a LOT, and it's way more exciting!" said Lola.
"Congratulations, Lola!" said Lincoln.
"After we get done here in Ballonlea, I'm gonna go find more fairy type Pokemon to catch and train!" said Lola with excitement.
Lola has won her fifth badge, and has become the next in line to take over as the fairy type Gym Leader. What else is in store for everyone else as their Galar adventures continue?
