Komachi hadn't been expecting anyone, and she doesn't need to ask Hachiman to know that her brother had been in the same boat. It would be nice if he ever had people over, but it's just not a realistic expectation.
So, when the doorbell rings, she checks the front door camera first. It's two cute girls outside, which isn't unusual, since Komachi's friends are plenty cute. The odd thing is, they're both wearing Hachiman's school's uniform.
Komachi's eyebrows shoot up under her bangs. Naturally, she runs off at top speed to throw on a more presentable, more fashionable set of shirt and shorts, and then runs back to open the door.
"Hi!" Komachi greets, beaming. She has to put her best foot forward, since someone in their household ought to, and it won't be Hachiman or Kamakura.
Kamakura's worst is still pretty good, but Hachiman is only human.
"Yahallo!" returns the girl with the shorter hair, raising her hand up also to wave casually at Komachi, beaming back. Komachi wonders if it's a new trend that hasn't reached her middle school yet. "Are you Hikki's sister?"
"Yup," Komachi says. It's a toss-up on whether Hikki is a nickname, or this girl just forgot Hachiman's name, or both. Komachi would be least surprised by the second option, but she prefers to be optimistic. "Komachi Hikigaya, at your service. It's nice to meet you! Yahallo!"
"I'm Yui Yuigahama, and this is Yukino Yukinoshita." Yuigahama gestures to herself, then to Yukinoshita. "I'm in the same class as Hikki. Our teacher asked me to bring him the homework."
"Their homeroom teacher is also our club advisor," Yukinoshita adds. "She put in a request for me to come with Yuigahama."
The implication is very much that otherwise, Yukinoshita would never have tagged along. But Komachi chooses to ignore it.
Komachi very graciously welcomes Yuigahama and Yukinoshita in, determined to be an unimpeachable hostess. It's not every day that there's girls at their residence for Hachiman, even if they don't seem to be particularly close to him, and she wants to make a good impression. It'll earn her a lot of points, she believes.
Komachi ushers the two of them into the living room, chattering easily with Yuigahama, who occasionally succeeds in prying engagement from Yukinoshita as if with a crowbar. Komachi is appreciative of this ability. She keeps the conversation going even as she whips up some tea and snacks for them all.
After setting the tray of such down on the coffee table, Komachi straightens back up and tells her guests, "I'll go get my brother."
Yukinoshita's nose scrunches up a bit at that. "That's unnecessary. Whatever he's sick with, I don't want to catch it."
Komachi's eyebrows shoot back up. Yuigahama hurriedly waves her hands to dismiss the idea.
"What Yukinon means is," she insists, flailing, "That if he's really feeling awful, we wouldn't want him to push himself!"
"I meant what I said," Yukinoshita reiterates, frowning.
Yuigahama turns pale and maybe a little green. But Komachi only snorts.
"I'll be right back," she assures them.
As she patters up the stairs, Komachi overhears Yuigahama catastrophizing to Yukinoshita, muffled by the walls. Komachi muses that she likes Yuigahama so far. She's oddly familiar somehow, though Komachi can't place from where. Yukinoshita, though, is more Hachiman's type.
Reaching the door to Hachiman's room, Komachi shakes her head. It's pointless to jump to conclusions, after all. With that in mind, she knocks on the door.
"Big Brother, your classmate brought you the homework. Yuigahama and Yukinoshita are in the living room," she informs Hachiman. There's no prompt reply, but he might be sleeping. Since opportunities like these don't present themselves every day, Komachi tries again. "Big Brother!"
Still nothing. Komachi cracks the door open and peeks inside.
Hachiman is gone.
Komachi opens the door the rest of the way to an empty bedroom. The window is also open, which is unusual, so Komachi marches up to it. On a whim, she braces against the sill with both hands and sticks her head out into the late spring breeze.
And there Hachiman is, running off somewhere in his PJs, faster by far than he has any right to be.
That settles it, Komachi thinks, blinking blankly out at the houses and backyards and streets. She'd suspected for a while, but it seemed too stupid to be true. My brother is an ESPer.
Overwhelmed and trying not to freak out, slowly, she salutes Hachiman's rapidly retreating form one-handed.
Don't lose to Haruhi's celestials!
