The General was dreaming but not sleeping due to the threat of a Legion attack. Early in the morning, he was violently awakened by a loud knocking on his door.
Getting up, he asked, "Who is it?" in a groggy voice
"It's Colonel Moore, sir, preparing for duty. The Legion's attack is coming soon, they're mobilizing."
Looking at the time, it was 5:30 AM. It was inevitable. The Legion would likely attack early that day, so the General said, "I'll be ready in a minute, Colonel. Stand by for now."
In his room, he rushed, changing into his General's uniform, but he had each medal still perfectly situated in his uniform.
Once he finished, he stepped out of his room and said, "Alright, let's get to the command post. Colonel, call your men. I'll explain my orders there."
Then he walked out of his office, which housed his bed, and walked through the reactor facilities, heading down the floor to the command post. Once he arrived, he waited a bit for the Colonel to rally her men.
After a few minutes, the Colonel arrived with her men, which included her Major, Captain, and Lieutenant. Many other high-ranking soldiers were also present.
Once everyone was assembled, the General began, "I would like to brief you all. Colonel Moore has informed me that the Legion is mobilizing and planning to attack. Here is the plan that is currently being used that I will clarify for you."
Then pointing on the map he said "First off, they may have more men with their Legionaries and their vassals—the Two Sun bikers, Navajo Indians and those reservation ghouls, they plan to overwhelm us this time around and tricks won't save us like before—but we have complete air superiority from the planes the Boomers gave us and our own. Therefore, we should try to remain in the buildings while keeping our few barricades and men outside to slow their advance mostly from their motorized bikes from the two sun or from their Legionaries, we can also use some of our trucks to ram their bikers and the Rangers, keep them on the western side of the Dam, we've heard reports that the Legion got howitzers so we can preserve our Rangers and have them reinforce areas without having them being blown to smithereens."
"Should I send the call out for more troops for the Mojave Outpost or New Vegas to help us since with the Legion moblilizing, sir?" said Colonel Moore
"Ask for more troopers, but not the Rangers. We have enough here at the Dam and who knows if we might need the Rangers for other things, there's lots of threats that aren't just the legion. As for New Vegas, don't send the call. We already have enough of their Securitrons here to patrol the outside perimeter, and that bastard House and his son will not seize our moment to be the guardians of the Mojave. The Mojave is ours, not theirs, and soon, when we push the Legion back to the Colorado a second time with our overwhelming firepower, New Vegas will surely be ours. Now, split your men between barricading the outside and patrolling the inside. Dismissed." said General Oliver
Once everyone was leaving the command room, the Colonel said,
"Sir, can I speak with you privately for a minute?"
"All right," said the General.
Then closing the door the Colonel said
"You sure it's the right choice to not ask for the Rangers and New Vegas, General? We need all the help we can get."
"Our president was almost assassinated, Colonel. With all the Legion's talk of honor, they tried to deceitfully attack our president. This is now a fight for the reputation of our nation crumbling before our very eyes, from our enemies and traitors to our cause. Our rapidly declining economic situation certainly isn't helping either. So now is not the time for House's Securitrons to outshine us and destroy our image to keep undercutting us. It's time for our troops to be taken seriously and not to be seen as lazy drunks, as for the Rangers our other enemies could strike when we're distracted with this so we can't send a bunch of Rangers from the Mojave Outpose to the Dam, plus they aren't best suited for the Close quarters combat I fear will take place here. Do you understand, Colonel?"
"Yes, sir."
"Well, all right then, you're dismissed, Colonel. We have a lot to do."
With the Colonel leaving, the General relayed his orders over the radio as well and mostly went to the other reactor stations to prepare the troops.
Then he went into one of the main reactor facilities, making his presence known and ensuring his orders were realized with only his pistol on his hip.
Then something happened unexpectedly. The Legion used the intake tunnels to flood the power station with their Legionaries and Centurions.
The troops were mostly caught by surprise and were overwhelmed by the Legion troops coming out of the tunnels, with the Legionaries and Centurions being more equipped for close-quarters combat with shotguns and rifles.
So General Lee Oliver told the men to stand firm and ordered on his radio that the Legionaries were coming from the tunnels and to cut them off.
The Legion was overwhelming their position, so the General ordered a retreat into the next power plant.
Once there, the General saw some Legion soldiers, but most were lying on the ground dead. With the additional NCR troops in the power plant, they dealt with the remaining Legionaries at the power plant and were able to hold their current position while the Legion held theirs.
The General then ordered his highest-ranking men into his compound and directed the rest to guard the power plant.
When Oliver and his men entered the compound room using the special knock, they found Rangers and other troopers at their usual post guarding the place. The General ordered the men to maintain a strong defense around the compound.
Then, sitting in his office in the compound, the General heard his radio ring. He answered it and said:
"General, we heard you're holed up in the compound," said Colonel Moore.
"Yes, that is correct. How is the situation out there, Colonel?" asked the General.
"It's not looking good out here, General. While the planes and securitrons are doing good work, the Legion is bombarding us with their howitzers from Fortification Hill, and their Two Sun motorbikers are overwhelming our position. At the very least, our trucks are holding those bikers off. The only consolation I see is that the Legion is blocked from entering the intake tunnels any longer, and any still there should be cut up by the fans. Of course, we still have some straggling Legionaries in the dam, but they've mostly been cleared from the power stations."
"Yes, I saw some of those Legionaries in the power stations. They captured one of the power stations, but if what you say is true, then we should hold all the remaining ones. Well, the orders remain the same, just try to keep holding. Once those fresh troopers I requested from the Mojave Outpost arrive, victory will be within our grasp."
Then, exiting his office, he gathered everyone together and announced:
"Alright men, I'll be going out to survey the troops. For now, I leave Captain Jack in command."
He then left the compound to inspect the power station.
Once there, the troopers saw him and saluted, though they looked weary.
He was mostly walking around, making his orders known, until he heard reports of advancing Legion troops. He retreated back to the compound since there was a bunker to fall back to, and most of the other troops knew about it, as they were familiar with the special knock required for entry.
But when he and the other soldiers reached the compound, they knocked, only for the door to open too early during the special knock. General Oliver grew suspicious and ordered the men to retreat, but it was too late. While some men managed to escape, the Legion overwhelmed them and knocked General Oliver out with the butt of a rifle.
When he opened his eyes, General Oliver realized he was tied up along with many others in the power stations.
He could see Legate Lanius with an anti-material rifle slung across his back and a magnum on his side. Another Legionary approached, wielding a laser rifle. This surprised the General, as the Legion rarely used advanced weaponry. However, the man was a centurion, so the General somewhat understood, though most centurions used ballistic rifles over energy weapons.
There were also Two Sun motorbikers dismounted and reservation ghouls in the area, but the General couldn't see any Navajo troops.
Despite the situation, the General maintained a stoic expression as he heard the Legate say:
"Send the men out. It is not total victory until all of those fleeing NCR troopers out there are crushed."
"But sir, they still have their planes out there. If we chase them down, we may lose more men than they lose theirs," replied the centurion.
"Mars needs blood, Centurion. If you don't understand that, perhaps we should take your blood instead," the Legate retorted coldly.
The centurion, clearly fearful, still said, "What about the troopers here? We can sacrifice them for Mars?"
"It's not enough, Centurion, but since I hear your wife's a priest, I'll take your word into account. Mars would not like it if we lose all our men and don't even reach those NCR bastards. Alright, start the sacrifices. We'll begin with the General first."
The General felt fear deep within, knowing all too well what these sacrifices entailed: the Legate bloodletting, followed by the General burned alive in honor of their war god, Mars. Despite this, his stoic demeanor remained intact.
The Legate drew his blood as gas was poured beneath the General. Then the Legate began the ritual, saying:
"Mars, give us strength. We sacrifice the soldiers of the New California Republic here, and with their sacrifice, we grow stronger to destroy them. This is the General of the New California Republic, an enemy of our Legion who has triumphed over us many times, but now his life ends here. We honor this sacrifice to your only begotten son, our Caesar. Glory to Mars and to Caesar."
The Legionaries all screamed, "AVE! True to Caesar!"
A match was lit and thrown onto the gas. The flames ignited instantly, and the General screamed in horrendous pain as the fire consumed him. His final thoughts were of despair, knowing the NCR troopers from the Mojave Outpost had not arrived in time.
