Kingdom Hearts III.5: A journey on Teyvat

Chapter 10: New encounters, new bonds (Part 2)

After their conversation with Lisa, Bennett, and the others, Sora, Aether, and Paimon decided to visit Diona. It had been a day full of encounters in Mondstadt, and they chose to keep the momentum going, savoring every moment before their departure for Liyue.

Meeting Diona was Sora's idea. Since the young girl had helped them fend off the Heartless during the attack on Springvale, it seemed natural to inform her of their departure so she wouldn't worry about their sudden absence.

With this thought in mind, the trio calmly left the Adventurers' Guild reception and headed towards the Cat's Tail, which was just a few steps away.

Upon arriving in front of the building, they paused for a moment to admire its exterior. As expected, several posters were plastered on the walls. They seemed to advertise the bar's specialties, though it was hard to imagine the place needing such promotions. After all, Diona was well-known in Mondstadt: a prodigious bartender, famous for her mixing skills, capable of creating unique drinks with sometimes improbable ingredients.

Looking closer, they noticed several round wooden tables arranged outside. On these tables sat empty mugs and bottles, testifying to the venue's popularity among those who preferred to enjoy their drinks in the open air.

Two cats roamed near the entrance. Although they looked like simple strays, their behavior betrayed a certain familiarity with the place. They seemed perfectly at ease, as if they had made this spot their daily refuge.

After that, Sora gently pushed open the door to the tavern, releasing a pleasant aroma of aged wood and fruits. Inside, the warm atmosphere of the Cat's Tail enveloped them instantly.

(Genshin Impact OST - Sipping in the Soft Breeze)

The place was spacious and well-lit. Several tables were scattered throughout the room, accompanied by numerous cat-friendly furnishings: plush cushions, towering cat trees. But this wasn't surprising, as the Cat's Tail was renowned for being both a welcoming tavern and a cozy cat café.

In front of them stood a large counter, proudly occupied by an adult black cat lounging atop it. Behind the counter, two people were busy at work: a blonde woman, elegant in her hat and red dress, and a man wearing a brown jacket over a white shirt. Seeing Sora, Aether, and Paimon curiously scanning the tavern, the blonde woman deduced that this must be their first visit. With a warm smile, she approached to give them a proper welcome.

? ? ? : Hello, and welcome to the Cat's Tail. This is your first time here, isn't it? I'm Margaret, the owner of the tavern. How may I help you?

Paimon, the first to react, replied promptly, her face lit with contagious enthusiasm.

Paimon : Hi! We're here to see Diona. She works here, right?

Upon hearing this question, Margaret immediately thought they must be customers eager to sample the famous drinks crafted by the young bartender with cat ears. She knew well that many patrons visited her establishment solely to savor those renowned cocktails. However, she offered them a different response, her tone becoming slightly apologetic.

Margaret : I'm sorry, but Diona isn't here today. I'm afraid she won't be back until tomorrow. Please forgive me.

At these words, Paimon lowered her eyes, visibly disappointed that they wouldn't be able to see their friend.

Paimon : Oh, really...?

But Sora, always optimistic, placed a comforting hand on the little guide's shoulder, his warm smile easing some of the disappointment in the air.

Sora : Don't worry, Paimon. We can still try looking for her elsewhere. After all, we've finished our errands, and there's plenty of time left before the end of the day.

Paimon looked up at Sora, then nodded with a sigh.

Paimon : Alright, let's do that. Let's go look for her somewhere else. Maybe we'll find her along the way!

Sora smiled, satisfied that he had lifted their guide's spirits a bit. Meanwhile, Aether turned to Margaret and asked:

Aether : Excuse me, if Diona happens to stop by, could you pass a message to her? That way, we won't have to run around needlessly.

Margaret thought for a moment, then nodded with a kind smile.

Margaret : Of course, that won't be a problem. But... may I know who the message is from?

The trio exchanged a glance, then each introduced themselves in turn.

Sora : I'm Sora.

He replied confidently.

Paimon : And I'm Paimon!

Added the little guide enthusiastically.

Aether : My name is Aether.

The blond young man concluded in a calm voice.

The moment Margaret heard the names Aether and Paimon, her eyes widened in surprise. She brought a hand to her mouth, visibly moved.

Margaret : Wait... Aether, you said? That means you're the famous 'Honorary Knight' of Mondstadt?!

Aether's reputation seemed to precede him in every corner of the city. He offered a sheepish smile, scratching the back of his head.

Aether : Uh... Heh heh, guilty.

He replied modestly.

Margaret, even more impressed, continued:

Margaret : But then, that means for Diona-chan, you are...

Before she could finish her sentence, a noise echoed from the back of the tavern. A door had just opened, immediately drawing everyone's attention. All eyes turned toward the entrance.

The figure that appeared left them breathless. They stood speechless for a moment.

Paimon : Diona?!

She exclaimed, eyes wide.

The young cat-girl, recognizable by her pointed ears and pastel pink hair, stood before them with a tray in hand. She gazed at them with a mix of surprise and joy.

Diona : Traveler, Paimon, Sora! You're here! I knew the voices I heard sounded familiar.

The trio exchanged a confused glance, not understanding why Diona was here when Margaret had just told them she was absent. They turned to the owner with questioning expressions, waiting for an explanation.

Paimon : What does this mean?! You just told us Diona wasn't at the bar!

She protested, visibly frustrated. It seemed like Margaret had lied to them!

The little guide crossed her arms, a pout on her face, clearly annoyed. Margaret, embarrassed, lowered her head slightly before composing herself. She tried to clear up the misunderstanding with a sincere tone.

Margaret : I'm truly sorry. I really didn't mean any harm by saying that. If I had known from the start that you were the ones who helped Diona-chan, I would have told you the truth immediately.

Sensing the tension rising and seeing her boss in an awkward situation, Diona quickly stepped in to defend her.

Diona : Paimon, don't be too hard on her. She thought she was acting in my best interest by doing that.

Sora, feeling a growing sense of concern, asked Diona :

Sora : Why? Did something happen?

Diona shook her head, a reassuring expression on her face.

Diona : Not really, no. At least, nothing serious since yesterday's events. Let me explain. Do you remember those black creatures we fought? What were they called again? Oh right, Heartless, I think. Well, Margaret found out that those creatures attacked my house. I came to the bar as usual to work, but as soon as I walked through the door, she insisted I take some time to rest.

Paimon, her eyes wide, exclaimed:

Paimon : Really? So, Margaret gave you some time off, in a way.

Diona : Yes, she insisted that I rest and told me that my priority right now should be taking care of Springvale's situation.

Seeing that Diona had explained enough, Margaret spoke up to complete the story.

Margaret : And I truly mean it. You saw what happened yesterday in Mondstadt: a wave of black creatures spread chaos through the city. Fortunately, they were pushed back thanks to our Acting Grand Master and other brave individuals who valiantly fought alongside her.

Hearing this, Sora and Aether exchanged a knowing look, a discreet smile lighting up their faces, satisfied with the battle they had fought the day before.

Margaret continued, her voice soft but firm:

Margaret : When I learned that those same creatures had ravaged the village where Diona-chan lives, I couldn't let one of my employees work while her village's problems went ignored. She needed to focus on the well-being of her home and its residents.

Finally understanding the reason behind Margaret's lie, Paimon's frustration eased. The little guide felt deep compassion for Diona, especially after the previous day's events. She softened her expression and said:

Paimon : Oh... Paimon see. Put that way, Paimon understand why you hid the truth from us. But next time, a little transparency wouldn't hurt!

She added those last words with a playful smirk, and the atmosphere finally relaxed.

Diona crossed her arms, a determined smile on her face, and looked Margaret straight in the eyes.

Diona : I already told you, I don't mind coming to work. I know that Grand Master Jean is doing everything she can to help our village. With someone like her, I have nothing to worry about.

Margaret nodded, but her gaze remained filled with concern.

Margaret : I understand how you feel, Diona, but I can't help but insist. From what you've told me, you saw the devastation those creatures caused in your village. I'd feel more at ease knowing you're taking care of yourself and your home. And don't forget about your father... Draft-san. He probably needs you.

Diona turned her head slightly, eyes closed, with a pout on her face.

Diona : My father, huh? Pfft... I don't really need to worry about him. He knows how to fend for himself, or so he says. I'm sure right now, he's drowning his troubles in alcohol, as he does so well. After all, it's not like he needs me...

Yet, despite her words, a flicker of worry crossed her eyes. She couldn't help but think about Draft, especially after the previous day's events. The images of those creatures invading her village returned to her mind, and her heart tightened. Finally, she let out a resigned sigh.

Diona : Well... If I don't have a choice... and if it's an order from my boss, I suppose I have to go along with it.

She said, pretending to be reluctant.

Margaret smiled, fully understanding the little act Diona was putting on. The young girl didn't want to admit it openly, but she knew her boss's suggestion was for the best. Deep down, she was grateful for Margaret's genuine care and concern.

Paimon, who had been following the scene closely, leaned toward Sora and Aether and whispered:

Paimon : It looks like Diona has a hard time admitting she worries about her father. But it's kind of cute seeing her act like that!

Sora smiled and replied in a low voice:

Sora : She has her pride to protect. But deep down, she cares a lot about her village and her loved ones.

Margaret turned to the trio and gave them a warm smile. With a respectful gesture, she bowed slightly before them.

Margaret : Sora, Aether... Diona-chan told me that it's thanks to you two that the monsters attacking Springvale were defeated. I sincerely thank you for protecting her home. Please know you will always be welcome at the 'Cat's Tail.'

Sora and Aether exchanged a knowing glance, their smiles widening at Margaret's heartfelt thanks. Sora then spoke:

Sora : Thank you, Margaret. We're simply following our hearts—helping as many people in danger as we can.

After this exchange, Diona, regaining her composure, turned to the trio. She had clearly recovered her usual energy, curious to know the reason for their visit.

Diona : Well, now that we've cleared things up, I guess we can get to the point. Did you need something?

Paimon, always quick to respond, spoke before the others.

Paimon : Not really. We mainly wanted to let you know that we're leaving Mondstadt. Tomorrow, Sora, Aether, and Paimon are heading to Liyue to continue our journey.

At these words, Diona's cat ears perked up suddenly, showing her surprise.

Diona : Really? You're leaving Mondstadt tomorrow morning?

Sora : That's right.

Sora confirmed.

Sora : Aether and Paimon invited me to join them on their journey. We just stopped by to let you know, so you wouldn't worry when you didn't see us around.

Diona : ...Okay, first of all, thanks for telling me. But... does that mean we won't see each other for a while?
She asked, a slight hint of sadness in her voice. It was understandable—Sora and Aether had played a crucial role in defending her village against the Heartless. It wasn't surprising that she felt personally attached to them, hoping to learn more about these new friends who had earned her trust.

Sora : Don't worry; it's just goodbye for now, Diona.

He added softly.

Sora : We'll be back, I promise.

Diona, arms crossed and ears twitching, looked at them with determination.

Diona : If that's the case, then before you leave, I'll make you one of my special drinks.

The trio looked at her, surprised by the unexpected offer. Paimon, eyes wide, was the first to react:

Paimon : Really? But Margaret gave you time off. Doesn't that bother you?

Diona : Not really. I planned to leave after feeding Roger, Nelson, and Paisley anyway... Just so you know, those are the cats living in the bar. But other than that, I don't mind making you two or three drinks... since you took the trouble to let me know. And besides... I promised I'd serve you if you visited the 'Cat's Tail'...

Diona slightly averted her eyes, her tail swishing through the air, a sign she was trying to hide her embarrassment.

Diona : A-Anyway, normally, I hate making drinks. You know I despise alcohol and the people who drink it... and I've sworn to do everything I can to ruin the wine industry... But since you protected my home and Mondstadt, and because it's your last day here... I'll make an exception. You're lucky I'm doing this of my own free will, she added with a hint of pride.

Margaret, amused by the scene, crossed her arms and smiled.

Margaret : You should feel honored. Diona-chan never does this kind of thing for anyone. Usually, it's me who has to tell her to serve customers, and she never does it with a smile, fu fu.

Diona : But let's be clear—I won't make any alcoholic drinks. The last thing I want is for you to end up like those drunks who've had too much.

Sora, Aether, and Paimon exchanged knowing glances. They immediately understood that, despite the way Diona presented it, she simply wanted to spend a bit more time with them before they left. Playing along, Sora responded with a warm smile:

Sora : In that case...

Aether : We gladly accept.

A brief, joyful smile lit up Diona's face. She quickly turned her head, trying to hide her happiness behind a serious facade. Her ears twitched slightly, betraying her true emotions.

Diona : Fine... but don't expect anything extraordinary, she said, heading toward the counter.

Margaret, still smiling and with a knowing tone, then made a suggestion that stopped Diona in her tracks.

Margaret : In that case, Diona-chan, why not serve our latest creation?

The young girl turned around, her eyes narrowing in curiosity.

Diona : You mean...

Margaret : Exactly, the exclusive specialty of our bar: the 'Fantastic Summer-Serendipity Coral Sparkling Tea.'

Paimon raised an eyebrow, looking puzzled.

Paimon : Uh... isn't that name a bit too long?
She scratched her head in confusion.

Margaret : That's just a detail.
She replied, waving her hand dismissively.

Margaret : This drink is our pride, one that lets us compete with the 'Angel's Share.'

Intrigued, Sora turned his gaze toward Margaret.

Sora : 'Angel's Share'?

Aether, more familiar with Mondstadt's establishments, calmly explained:

Aether : It's another bar located a bit further away. Apparently, it's one of the best taverns in Mondstadt.

Thinking about that place, Aether fell silent for a moment. Perhaps they could take the opportunity to visit the Master of that establishment. It seemed like a suggestion worth discussing with Paimon later.

Margaret : Anyway, thanks to Diona-chan's creations, we have something to stand up to them with. Now, don't keep them waiting any longer, Diona-chan.

Diona sighed, pretending to be annoyed as she obeyed her boss.

Diona : Alright... I got it. You three wait here, I'll prepare the cocktail.

The trio stood at the counter, watching Diona in action. Her precise and skilled movements showcased the expertise she had developed as a bartender. The sound of ice cubes clinking in the shaker, the subtle aromas of the ingredients she mixed—everything contributed to a calming atmosphere.

Margaret, arms crossed, watched the scene with a tender smile.

Margaret : You know, Diona-chan would never admit it, but she pours her heart into every one of her creations.

She murmured, her voice filled with pride.

Paimon, floating above the counter, squinted playfully.

Paimon : Paimon can believe that... But usually, she does it for the wrong reasons, right?

Sora and Aether exchanged a knowing glance and nodded, an amused smile playing on their lips. They knew that beneath her outward demeanor, Diona cared deeply for them, and this shared moment was her way of saying goodbye.

After a few moments, Diona returned with three glasses, setting them down in front of them with a serious expression but a hint of excitement in her eyes.

Diona : Here. Try this and let me know what you think.
She crossed her arms, bracing herself for potential criticism.

Sora, Aether, and Paimon each took a glass, their eyes gleaming with anticipation. With every sip, an explosion of refreshing flavors danced on their taste buds—a gentle contrast to the cozy atmosphere of the tavern.

Sora : This is... really delicious.
He set his glass down with an admiring smile.

Sora : You know, your drinks could rival those made by the 'Little Chef.'

Diona raised an eyebrow, curiosity breaking through her usual façade.

Diona : Huh? 'Little Chef'? Who's that?
She asked, genuinely confused, her brow furrowed. Who was this 'Little Chef'?

Sora smiled nostalgically, his thoughts drifting back to distant memories.

Sora : Ah! He's... an acquaintance of mine. A chef, to be exact. During one of my adventures, I helped him out as a kitchen assistant.
He explained, recalling how he first met the tiny rodent chef and how he had helped him manage the bistro in Twilight Town.

Paimon nodded vigorously, her cheeks slightly flushed from the pleasant sweetness of the drink.

Paimon : Yeah! You're really talented! How can a drink taste this good without... alcohol?

Diona averted her eyes, a slight blush rising to her cheeks.

Diona : Don't say silly things... It's just... a drink. Nothing special.

Aether exchanged a knowing glance with Sora. They both understood that this drink was far more than a simple mix of ingredients. Diona had poured her heart into it, a delicate blend of gratitude and sincerity. It was her way of expressing how much the trio meant to her, especially after they risked their lives to protect her father, loved ones, and village from the invaders.

Finally, after finishing their drinks, the trio stood up. Margaret walked them to the door, followed closely by Diona. The tavern felt suddenly quieter, as if it, too, sensed the weight of their departure.

Margaret : Sora, Traveler, Paimon, thank you all for stopping by. I hope you come back soon. Take care of yourselves.

Diona crossed her arms, her ears slightly lowered.

Diona : Don't forget what I told you... Stay safe. I... I'm counting on you to come back one day.

Sora, Aether, and Paimon gave her a final smile, filled with unspoken promises. Then, they stepped out of the tavern into the streets of Mondstadt, bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. As they walked quietly, Paimon, floating just ahead of the duo, broke the silence first.

Paimon : You know... Paimon really enjoyed spending time with Diona.
She spoke softly.

Paimon : I hope we get to see her again soon. She's... special, in her own way.

Sora nodded, a sincere smile on his lips.

Sora : I completely agree. There's something genuine about her, even if she tries to hide her emotions behind that grumpy exterior.

He reflected on the moments spent with Diona—her determination, pride, and sincere heart. A new bond had formed between them, just like with the other people he had met today: the spirited Klee, the devoted Noelle, the gentle Sucrose, the enthusiastic Bennett, the eccentric Fischl, and the loyal Razor. Though he had only met them that day, each encounter left an indelible mark on his heart, weaving a web of friendships that would be precious in the future.

Sora : Maybe more surprises await me, who knows?

As if responding to this silent thought, Aether spoke up, turning to Paimon with an idea in mind.

Aether : Paimon, how about we head to the 'Angel's Share' tavern?

Paimon furrowed her brow slightly, intrigued.

Paimon : Huh? Why there? We just left a tavern!

Aether smirked.

Aether : True, but remember what Margaret mentioned earlier? She talked about the 'Angel's Share,' and... considering how today unfolded—meeting so many important people in Mondstadt—it seems right to inform the 'Master' there about our departure.

Paimon's eyes lit up at the suggestion. She instantly understood who Aether was referring to.

Paimon : Oh! You mean... him?!
She exclaimed.

Paimon : That's a great idea! Paimon sure he'd want to know we're leaving.

Walking slightly behind, Sora watched them with a confused expression. He furrowed his brows.

Sora : Wait, who is this 'him' you're talking about?

Paimon turned to Sora, floating just in front of him with a mischievous glint in her eyes.

Paimon : He's someone very special. You could consider him one of Mondstadt's heroes, even if he often works in the shadows. Without him, we wouldn't have been able to resolve the crisis with Dvalin.

Sora raised an eyebrow, intrigued.

Sora : A hero in the shadows? And you think we should go talk to him?

Paimon : Absolutely!
She confirmed enthusiastically.

Paimon : He's not just a hero in the shadows; he's also a public figure. He watches over Mondstadt, even though many don't understand his methods. Paimon sure he'd be interested to know we're leaving.

Aether added in a calm yet determined tone:

Aether : His name is Diluc. He's one of Mondstadt's most skilled fighters, rivaling even Jean. He's a quiet but steadfast protector.

Sora pondered for a moment, his mind racing at the thought of meeting another remarkable person in this city. A determined smile spread across his face.

Sora : Alright. Let's go. I'm curious to meet this Diluc.

Without wasting any time, the trio headed toward the famous Angel's Share tavern. On their way there, Sora, still curious, asked for more details.

Sora : So, who exactly is Diluc?
He asked, his gaze fixed on Aether and Paimon.

Paimon : Diluc is a central figure in Mondstadt. He runs the region's wine industry. As the owner of the 'Dawn Winery,' his vineyards are famous all over Teyvat! The wines produced under his supervision are considered the best, especially their renowned 'Dandelion Wine.'

Sora raised his eyebrows, intrigued.

Sora : A master winemaker? And you say he's also a hero in the shadows?

Aether chimed in, his voice calm yet firm.

Aether : Exactly. Officially, he's the owner of the 'Angel's Share' and runs the winery. But in reality, he also acts as a vigilante, protecting Mondstadt from the shadows. He's incredibly strong, wields a claymore with impressive skill, and uses devastating Pyro abilities.

Paimon continued, more serious now.

Paimon : He's not part of the Knights of Favonius. In fact, he prefers to work alone. But his commitment to protecting Mondstadt is undeniable. Without him, many threats would have thrown the city into chaos. Even though he tries to hide his actions, he can't stay unnoticed. That's why the locals call this mysterious vigilante the 'Darknight Hero.'

Sora's eyes sparkled with curiosity and admiration as he absorbed their words. Another fascinating figure to meet in this world—a blend of mystery, power, and duty.

The facade of the "Angel's Share" was elegant, though less flashy than that of the "Cat's Tail." Old, finely cut stones formed the walls, topped with a brown-tiled roof. On the sign, as well as on the wooden panels, a sort of crest was painted: two angels, positioned on either side, drinking wine through straws. Lanterns hung on either side of the door, casting a warm and inviting glow.

As they pushed open the solid oak door, a soft chime echoed, announcing their entrance. The interior was warm and simple. Unlike the "Cat's Tail," which had a feline charm and cozy atmosphere with its themed decorations, the "Angel's Share" was a classic, authentic tavern. Large, raw wooden tables filled the space, and a long bar stretched along the back wall. The walls were decorated with barrels, a few paintings depicting landscapes or Mondstadt's vineyards, and a mounted deer head like a hunting trophy. The atmosphere was lively, filled with the animated conversations of patrons enjoying the renowned wines.

Upon entering, Sora's eyes scanned every detail of the room. The warm, bustling atmosphere contrasted with the quiet exterior of Mondstadt, but what immediately caught his attention was the figure behind the bar.

A young man with red hair, tied back into a neat ponytail, stood there. His richly adorned black coat gave him an imposing, almost noble air. His upright posture and the serious expression on his face radiated an aura of professionalism and control. His deep red eyes watched the room vigilantly, pausing for a moment on Sora, creating a silent exchange of glances.

Sora was about to speak to him, intrigued by this presence that seemed perfectly in tune with the tavern's atmosphere. However, Paimon, always quick to break the silence, spoke up first.

Paimon : Hey! Master Diluc! Long time no see!

Diluc raised an eyebrow slightly, immediately recognizing the floating creature. A fleeting spark of amusement flashed in his eyes before disappearing behind his mask of impassivity.

Diluc : Traveler... Paimon... It's rare to see you here.

His voice was calm, deep, almost distant, but there was a subtle warmth in his tone that conveyed his gratitude toward them.

Aether stepped forward, a slight smile on his lips.

Aether : How have you been?

Diluc crossed his arms, his expression as serious as ever.

Diluc : As well as business allows. Customers haven't been scarce, even after yesterday's events. I would have sworn Mondstadt's people would think about their safety first rather than their love of wine.

His tone remained grave. Aether immediately understood what he was referring to. He exchanged a look with Diluc, his expression hardening slightly.

Diluc : I suppose you're the ones who resolved the crisis again, Traveler. Those mysterious dark monsters that attacked the city... And I also heard about the partial destruction of Springvale.

Aether nodded, the memory of the battles still fresh in his mind.

Aether : Yes, that's right. These creatures everyone's talking about... They're called Heartless.

At this revelation, Diluc raised an eyebrow, intrigued.

Diluc : Heartless? I've never heard of such creatures before.

Aether : Neither had we, until yesterday. Their sudden appearance is as troubling as it is unexpected. But if we managed to handle the situation, it's largely thanks to our new friend.

Aether subtly turned his head towards Sora, who stood quietly by his side.

Diluc followed his gaze and focused his piercing eyes on the brown-haired boy. His intense look seemed to assess Sora silently—not hostile, just a vigilant curiosity.

Paimon : Master Diluc, this is Sora! He's the one who helped us push back the Heartless!

Caught slightly off guard by the sudden introduction, Sora offered a shy smile. He ran a hand through his hair, searching for the right words.

Sora : Hello... Nice to meet you.

A brief silence settled in as Diluc continued to observe Sora with an intensity that might have seemed intimidating. After a moment, he gave a slight nod, his features softening a bit.

Diluc : Welcome to Mondstadt, Sora. My name is Diluc. If you've earned Aether and Paimon's trust, then you have mine as well.

A wave of relief washed over Sora. Diluc's aura was imposing, but beneath it, he sensed a quiet strength and sincerity in the man.

Sora : T-thank you for your kind words.

Diluc gave a slight nod, his eyes still fixed on Sora, discreetly evaluating the young boy.

Diluc : I haven't seen you in Mondstadt before today. Are you just passing through the city?

Sora : Y-yeah, you could say that. I arrived yesterday. I met Amber, and she guided me here before introducing me to the members of the Knights of Favonius.

At the mention of the Knights of Favonius, Diluc's expression hardened almost imperceptibly. His jaw clenched, and a shadow flickered in his eyes—barely noticeable but heavy with meaning. Sora noticed the sudden change in demeanor, a hint of concern rising within him.

Sora : Uh... are you okay?

Diluc quickly regained his composure, smoothing his expression back to its usual calm. He briefly averted his gaze, as if pushing away an unpleasant memory.

Diluc : Don't worry. I just recalled some... important events in my life.

His tone was calm, but there was a certain edge to his words. He was clearly downplaying the discomfort, but something in his eyes hinted at a complicated past.

Sora didn't fully understand the sudden shift in mood, but he didn't dare press further. Beside him, Aether and Paimon exchanged a brief glance. They already knew that Diluc didn't hold much affection for the Knights of Favonius. He wasn't their enemy, but his trust in the institution had been shaken long ago... except for a few individuals he still respected.

Diluc, arms crossed, studied Sora with a thoughtful expression, his crimson eyes scrutinizing the boy as if trying to unravel an invisible mystery.

Diluc : Sora, since you've helped Aether and Paimon, I assume you have some knowledge about these... Heartless, correct?

Sora nodded, feeling the weight of Diluc's attention on him. The question was direct, and the tavern master's curiosity seemed genuine, though relentless.

Sora : Yes, I know them well...

Diluc's eyebrows furrowed slightly, intrigued by the response. His voice remained calm.

Diluc : Interesting... Until now, I've never heard of such creatures, and I highly doubt anyone else has either. How do you know about them?

The question, though posed without hostility, caught Sora off guard. He felt a slight discomfort. He had already shared his story with Aether, Paimon, Jean, as well as Amber, Lisa, and Kaeya. They all knew where he came from and the threat the Heartless posed. But since Aether and Paimon trusted Diluc, perhaps he could share it with him too.

Sora : Well... It's a long story. But since you're a friend of Aether and Paimon... maybe I can—

Before Sora could finish his sentence, a nonchalant male voice echoed from behind them.

? ? ? : Oh, in that case, may I join the conversation too?

The trio turned sharply, surprised. Leaning casually against the doorway stood Kaeya, a mischievous smile playing on his lips. His one visible eye, glimmering with a playful light, swept the room before settling on Diluc.

Paimon, wide-eyed, exclaimed:

Paimon : Kaeya! Where did you come from?

She almost immediately realized her own question and rolled her eyes.

Paimon : Ah... never mind. Paimon should've known. You always spend your free time in taverns.

Kaeya, feigning innocence, shrugged.

Kaeya : You know me so well, Paimon. After all, what better place to enjoy a fine drink and share a friendly conversation with the esteemed owner here?

His smile widened as he cast a teasing glance at Diluc, who showed no sign of amusement. His eyes narrowed slightly, and he responded in a cold but controlled voice:

Diluc : I see you have plenty of free time for your usual distractions. Is it really wise for knights to act like this when there are more pressing matters to attend to? If so, the Knights of Favonius are only continuing to decline.

Kaeya, far from irritated by the jab, maintained his usual mischievous smile. He replied in a light tone, with a playful glint in his eye.

Kaeya : Always so warm, Diluc. It's touching how much you care about me. But don't worry, Grand Master Jean has already given the necessary directives to the knights. Since she doesn't seem to need my help, I've decided to take care of my own duties.

Diluc, impassive, crossed his arms, his piercing gaze never leaving Kaeya.

Diluc : And your duty involves spending the afternoon drinking while delegating your responsibilities to your subordinates?

Kaeya : Who said you can't mix business with pleasure?

The atmosphere grew tense, an almost electric current between the two men. Sora, Aether, and Paimon exchanged awkward glances. The relationship between Diluc and Kaeya had always been... complicated. Paimon leaned slightly toward the two boys, whispering softly.

Paimon : Isn't it strange?

Aether : What's wrong?

Paimon : Diluc and Kaeya are really alike, so why don't they get along?

Aether : How are they alike, again?

Sora, eyebrows furrowed, spoke up timidly.

Sora : I don't know them very well, so... I can't really say.

Paimon : Well, Kaeya's the kind of guy who acts shady in the light of day… While Diluc is a shining beacon of justice in the dark of night! Don't you think that's kinda the same thing...?

Aether : Uhh... I still don't see it.

Sora : I suppose... they both have a heart that wants to protect those who are important to them... if that's what you mean.

Kaeya, noticing the palpable awkwardness settling among the trio, let out a light chuckle and raised his hands in a gesture of peace.

Kaeya : Well, I think our little "conversation" is starting to make our young friends uncomfortable. How about we drop it quickly and move on to more important matters?

Diluc, his piercing eyes still fixed on Kaeya, nodded slowly.

Diluc : For once, I agree with you. So, what exactly brings you here?

Even as he asked, his tone remained slightly cold, like a sharp, icy blade.

Kaeya approached with his usual light, nonchalant stride. His gaze swept over the trio before settling back on Diluc.

Kaeya : I overheard your conversation, all four of you. It seems you're interested in these Heartless. Strange, isn't it? I thought concerns like that were the Knights' responsibility.

His remark seemed casual, but his teasing tone suggested he knew full well Diluc's true motivations. Beneath the words was a clear allusion to the "Darknight Hero"—the one who protected Mondstadt from the shadows.

Diluc remained impassive, though his gaze darkened slightly.

Diluc : The Knights aren't the only ones who should be concerned. As the master of Dawn Winery, it's my duty to ensure the safety of my employees, no matter the nature of the threat.

His words were clear, but Kaeya wasn't fooled. He knew perfectly well that Diluc wanted information about the Heartless to better protect the city. Behind this façade of a winery owner, there was still the man ready to defend Mondstadt.

The day before, during the Demon Tide attack, even Diluc—usually so composed—had been shocked to see that dark army sweeping through the city. Frustration gnawed at him as he watched the Knights of Favonius handle the defense, unable to act openly in the daylight. Trapped in his role, he had been forced to observe from the shadows.

But everything changed when he saw Aether back in Mondstadt, repelling those creatures with unwavering determination. Relief washed over him. Aether was someone he trusted to protect the city. That day, he had also noticed another figure by Aether's side.

Today, that figure had a name: Sora. And now that they had met, everything made sense.

This time, he wouldn't simply wait in the shadows. These dark creatures, appearing out of nowhere, couldn't be left to roam freely. He needed to understand them to prepare better.

Kaeya, sensing Diluc's silent determination, broke the tense silence with his usual carefree tone, a smirk on his lips.

Kaeya : So... you were planning to ask Sora for details about these so-called Heartless, weren't you?

All eyes turned to Sora, who, caught off guard, flinched slightly. His eyes widened with surprise, but he also felt a sense of reassurance in the attention from both men.

Diluc's voice softened as he addressed Sora directly.

Diluc : Rest assured, I have no ill intentions. I simply want to better understand this threat. Aether and Paimon mentioned that you know a lot about these creatures... If you don't mind, could you tell me more?

Sora hesitated for a moment, searching for his words, before smiling shyly.

Sora : Of course, I don't mind at all. I'd be happy to share what I know.

Just as he started speaking, Kaeya cut in, a mischievous glint in his eye.

Kaeya : In that case, mind if I explain it this time to our dear Diluc?

Diluc, frowning, slowly turned his head toward him. His voice sharpened.

Diluc : And what makes you think you know more about this than anyone else?

Kaeya shrugged with provocative nonchalance, an amused smile playing on his lips.

Kaeya : Let's just say I was a bit quicker than you... Thanks to our new friend here, who was kind enough to explain everything to me and the others.

Diluc's gaze darkened slightly as he stared at Kaeya. There wasn't real hostility between them, but Kaeya's knack for always finding something to challenge had a particular way of getting under Diluc's skin. It was a dance they were used to—a constant exchange of jabs and stares.

Kaeya, ever nonchalant, straightened slightly and crossed his arms, his mischievous smile lingering.

Kaeya : Sorry, my dear Diluc, but I'll be handling the explanations. You might not know this, but our three friends here need to prepare for their journey to Liyue. They're leaving Mondstadt tomorrow.

Kaeya's words had an effect on Diluc. His hard expression softened as he turned to Aether and Paimon, seeking confirmation in their eyes.

Diluc : Is it true? Are you really leaving the city tomorrow?

Paimon, visibly uncomfortable, nodded.

Paimon : Yes... It's true. We mainly came here to let you know.

A silence settled between them, broken only by the distant noises of the tavern. Diluc considered for a moment before slowly nodding, as though he finally understood the reason for their visit.

Diluc : I see. So you came to say goodbye.

He cast a glance at Kaeya, then back to the trio, a fleeting understanding passing through his eyes. His shoulders relaxed slightly. Kaeya's proposal now made perfect sense.

Diluc : Very well. I'll let you speak. But know that I remain skeptical.

Kaeya let out his usual laugh, a sound that always seemed to hide something beneath.

Kaeya : Oh, don't worry. Not only can I explain everything I know about the Heartless, but I've even had the pleasure of fighting them. If you still doubt me after that... well, I don't know what else I can do.

Diluc lowered his head briefly, as if resigning himself to the conversation, then looked back at the trio.

Diluc : In that case, I won't keep you any longer. You have a long journey ahead.

He turned to Aether and Paimon.

Diluc : Thank you for coming to let me know. I wish you luck in the adventures that await you. If you ever need anything in the future, don't hesitate to come to me.

Aether and Paimon exchanged a glance, moved by Diluc's words. Paimon, eyes shining, replied sincerely:

Paimon : Thank you, Master Diluc. We really appreciate it...

Then, Diluc turned to Sora, his sharp gaze now holding a hint of warmth.

Diluc : Sora... Even though we didn't get much time to know each other, I wish you all the best too. If our paths cross again, I'd like to learn more about you.

Sora, surprised and touched, felt a genuine smile spread across his face.

Sora : Thank you, Diluc. I look forward to that day.

Their eyes met for a moment, a silent understanding passing between them. A new friendship had formed—quiet but genuine, ready to face the shadows ahead.

The trio stepped through the doors of the Angel's Share, leaving the tense atmosphere of the bar behind. Now alone, Diluc crossed his arms and fixed Kaeya with his cold, piercing gaze once more.

Diluc : Enough detours. Tell me everything you know about these Heartless.

Kaeya, with a sly smile, couldn't help but comment:

Kaeya : Straight to the point as always... But couldn't we start with a drink? You know stories are always better with a glass in hand.

Diluc's icy stare hardened even more. His eyes spoke volumes: wasting another second was not an option. Kaeya sighed and shrugged.

Kaeya : Alright, alright... I guess that'll have to wait.

He took a moment to gather his thoughts, his expression growing slightly serious.

He then began explaining to Diluc that the Heartless were unlike anything he had ever seen before, bearing no resemblance to the monsters they knew throughout Teyvat. According to Sora, they had only one goal: to attack as many people as possible to steal their "hearts." This remark made Diluc raise an eyebrow, not fully grasping the implication. He paused, his gaze growing more intense.

Kaeya : Without Sora's help and guidance, I doubt we could have repelled them so effectively. Diluc... I know you, but even you might have struggled. You saw that massive wave of Heartless attacking the city. It's not something that can be handled alone.

Diluc didn't respond immediately, but his expression darkened. He absorbed every word, carefully weighing their importance.

Diluc : These creatures... are they connected to the Abyss Order?

Kaeya considered this for a moment, then shook his head.

Kaeya : No, they're not directly linked. But according to Sora, these creatures can be controlled by those who are powerful and influential enough. Just imagine what Abyss Mages could do if they managed to ally with them...

A heavy silence settled between them, the implications of this idea hanging in the air.

Diluc : It's strange... All this time, we had never heard of these Heartless. How could such a dangerous threat have gone unnoticed until now?

He paused, his eyes returning to Kaeya. His tone grew more serious.

Diluc : Sora... Is he connected to these creatures in any way?

Kaeya, surprised, raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement playing at his lips.

Kaeya : Are you doubting him? Do you think he could be responsible for all of this?

He already knew the answer, but he wanted to hear Diluc clearly express his thoughts about the young hero.

Diluc : No. From what little I've learned by talking to him, Sora doesn't seem like the type to create problems or cause harm.

He paused for a moment, crossing his arms.

Diluc : In some ways, he reminds me of the Traveler.

Intrigued by the comparison, Kaeya let out a small laugh.

Kaeya : Hmm... I see what you mean. Honestly, they're more alike than one might think.

Diluc fixed his gaze on Kaeya before continuing:

Diluc : I don't believe Sora is a threat. Quite the opposite. I have the impression he's far more important than he lets on.

Kaeya nodded, his eyes softening slightly. For once, they seemed to be on the same page.

Kaeya : That's precisely how I feel. I just wanted to make sure you reached the same conclusion as I did.

Kaeya then decided to share more about Sora.

Kaeya : Sora, like Aether, comes from another world. And, like him, he's searching for something — or rather, someone. A girl... Her name is Kairi.

Diluc remained silent for a moment, his expression hardening.

Diluc : So, he's not just a traveler passing through. His presence here has a specific purpose.

Kaeya nodded in agreement.

Kaeya : Exactly. Just like the Traveler, they both share the same determination to find the people they care about. That's what makes them so similar.

Diluc : So, he didn't choose to bring these creatures here. They likely followed him or appeared because of him.

Kaeya : Always so perceptive. As you said, Sora is much more important than he seems. That boy... He may not look it, but he carries a far heavier burden than he lets on. He's faced more trials than most of us could endure. And without his presence, believe me, we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Diluc lifted his head slightly, his eyes narrowing with suspicion.

Diluc : What do you mean by that?

Kaeya then recounted to his adoptive brother the life that Sora had been forced to lead. He described how the young boy had been chosen by fate to wield a weapon called the Keyblade, marking the beginning of his long battle against the Heartless. He spoke of the mortal enemies Sora had faced, known as Organization XIII. Kaeya highlighted the critical battles Sora had fought during an event he referred to as the "Keyblade War," emphasizing that without Sora's involvement, everything could have descended into chaos. He hinted that even their own world, seemingly peaceful, might have vanished without them ever realizing it.

Diluc remained silent for a moment, his gaze lost in thought, absorbing every detail of Kaeya's story. The words resonated deeply, sparking a profound reflection within him. Sora, this young boy, had endured trials far beyond what most people could withstand in a lifetime.

He crossed his arms, his mind drifting to his own past. He, too, had faced personal trials. Marked by painful losses and relentless struggles, those experiences had shaped him into the man he was today. Yet, even his own tragedies seemed to pale in comparison to the burden Sora carried. An ordinary-looking boy, yet one with an unbreakable will, forged through battles against the deepest darkness.

Now that he knew who Sora truly was, he couldn't help but feel a deep respect for the young hero.

Continuing his narrative, Kaeya began detailing the events that had occurred since the previous day.

Kaeya : After the battle against the Heartless in Mondstadt, something unusual happened. A mysterious figure in a black cloak appeared in front of Sora, Aether, Jean, and Lisa. He vanished as quickly as he had appeared, but not before he... did something to Sora.

Diluc furrowed his brow, his gaze growing even sharper.

Diluc : What do you mean by that? Did he hurt Sora?

Kaeya : No, the boy said he didn't feel any particular discomfort. But after the encounter, Sora confided that it might be a survivor from this so-called "Organization XIII."

Silence fell between them for a moment as Diluc processed what he had just heard. He now understood the magnitude of the threat. A simple battle against unknown creatures took on a whole new dimension if a secret organization capable of influencing dark forces was involved.

Diluc : This can't be a coincidence. That mysterious figure is certainly connected to what's happening now.

Kaeya, seeing the spark of determination in his adoptive brother's eyes, immediately understood where his thoughts were headed. He straightened slightly and fixed his gaze on Diluc, more serious than ever.

Kaeya : If you're thinking about going after that figure in black... let me warn you. If Sora truly believes it's a member of Organization XIII, you won't be able to handle this alone.

Diluc didn't respond immediately, but Kaeya continued, his voice unusually grave.

Kaeya : This isn't just a threat to Mondstadt. If this figure is really connected to that organization, it means this danger could spread across all of Teyvat. This battle won't be yours alone.

Diluc clenched his fists, his thoughts swirling. He had always taken it upon himself to defend Mondstadt, acting from the shadows to protect the city. But this time, the stakes seemed higher than anything he had ever faced.

Diluc : As if we didn't have enough problems with the Abyss or the Fatui.

Kaeya, having finished his account, watched Diluc, scrutinizing his impassive expression. But he knew his adoptive brother too well not to detect the storm brewing behind those crimson eyes.

Kaeya : So, what are you going to do? Do you still plan to handle this alone, like you always have?

Diluc remained silent for a moment, arms crossed, his gaze fixed on an invisible point. He was carefully weighing each piece of information he had just heard. The sudden appearance of the Heartless had already been a shock, but now he had to consider a much larger conspiracy involving a mysterious organization he knew nothing about. The risk of being dragged into an endless war felt very real.

Finally, he lifted his head, his voice firm, tinged with cold determination.

Diluc : You already know the answer. I'll do what I've always done—protect Mondstadt. If those Heartless return to spread chaos, I'll be ruthless. No threat will go unpunished.

Kaeya smiled slightly, as if he had anticipated this response. But his expression turned more serious as he posed the next question, his voice almost provocatively challenging:

Kaeya : And what about this mysterious figure in black? Are you planning to ignore him?

He seemed to be testing Diluc, trying to gauge how far he was willing to go. Understanding his "brother's" game all too well, Diluc locked eyes with him.

Diluc : I'm not foolish enough to charge headfirst into a threat I know nothing about. That would be suicidal.

He paused, then added more calmly:

Diluc : In this case, there's only one solution—trust Sora.

Kaeya raised an eyebrow, visibly satisfied and curious to hear more.

Kaeya : Oh? You're already willing to trust him?

Diluc : I don't see why I shouldn't. This is his fight, and he's the best one to handle this kind of threat. If what you say is true... If Sora really is as you described—righteous, honorable, with an extraordinary sense of responsibility and an unbreakable will to protect what he holds dear—then I would gladly entrust him with my life.

He paused, his gaze hardening again.

Diluc : And if he ever needs help, I'll be there to lend a hand. To him and the Traveler.

Kaeya nodded, his smile widening slightly, but without his usual mischief. For once, he seemed completely serious.

Kaeya : That's the answer I was hoping to hear. Maybe this time, you won't have to carry this burden alone.

Kaeya cast a glance at Diluc, a light yet sincere smile playing on his lips. He said nothing more, but his eyes betrayed a certain satisfaction, as if reassured to see his adopted brother finally willing to place his trust in someone else. Sora, like the Traveler, had managed to break through the armor Diluc had forged over the years.

For his part, Diluc looked away, arms crossed, as if he had nothing to prove. His posture remained firm, his expression impassive. Yet something about his demeanor hinted at a newfound calm, a rare openness.

True to himself, Kaeya quickly regained his mocking tone, a mischievous glint returning to his eyes.

Kaeya : Well, after such a long story, I think a drink would be the perfect way to wrap up this delightful conversation, don't you agree?

He left his sentence hanging, clearly implying that he expected Diluc to pour him a drink right then and there. Diluc didn't respond immediately. He fixed Kaeya with his usual cold, impassive gaze, as if he hadn't even heard the request. The silence stretched out, heavy, almost theatrical.

Then, without a word, Diluc turned and walked behind the counter. His movements were precise and controlled as he took out a glass and calmly began preparing a drink. He wasn't obligated to do it, and Kaeya knew that. Perhaps it was Diluc's roundabout way of thanking him for sharing the story and acknowledging the importance of what he had just learned. But Kaeya also knew his brother would never admit that out loud.

Amused by the scene, Kaeya closed his eyes for a moment, savoring the moment. His thoughts drifted, inevitably returning to Sora and the Traveler. After everything they had just discussed, he couldn't help but wonder what still lay ahead. These new threats, the mysterious creatures, this secret organization... It was only the beginning.

Yet Kaeya wasn't worried. He had faith in Sora and Aether. The duo had their own lives to live, their own battles to fight. The people of Mondstadt, like them, would continue to face whatever challenges came their way.

Author's Note :

I hope you enjoyed the chapter. I apologize in advance, but there will probably be a third and final part to this arc. I didn't expect it would take this long to develop the moments where Sora meets the other characters from Mondstadt. I mean, the two chapters I wrote previously each reached around 20,000 words, and I think there's still more to say in the next one. Strangely enough, I felt really satisfied writing this chapter.

Did I manage to bring out Diona's and Diluc's personalities well? Personally, I think I did, but it's always good to get other people's opinions.

Lastly, I think the next chapter will probably be the final one focusing on Mondstadt before I move on to Liyue—at least, I hope so.

Thank you for your support, and see you soon in the next chapter!
