CHAPTER 215
Gary was laying on the interior side of the overturned roof of the rover with his hips above his head and his neck and head crunched below him. He was afraid to move. He thought the pain would be excruciating, or worse, he wouldn't feel anything at all because he was paralyzed and he couldn't move.
He shifted his eyes to the driver's seat. Daniel was in a similar position, and he appeared to be unconscious. As Gary's eyes focused passed him to the window he saw there was a clear yellowish fluid pouring against the cracked glass. As he examined the area beyond the window further he saw the undercarriage of a truck that the rover had crashed against.
The smell of gasoline wafted into Gary's nose and he began to put the pieces together.
"Oh, god."
Gary heard a fizzling sound and saw sparks lighting up from within the dashboard. Smoke billowed across the windshield and filled the interior of the vehicle.
"Not good. Not good."
Gary pulled at his door latch, and the door only groaned open a few inches. He kicked at it until it forced open enough that he could get through. Turning around he reached for Daniel's shoulder. He was still unconscious.
Gary heard a growl in his ear. When he looked over he was face to face with Tomahawk. He had forgotten all about her. The utahraptor looked like she was waking up to a bad hangover and wanted to kill the first living thing she laid eyes on.
Gary pressed himself against the dash as he faced her. He didn't know what to do. Then he saw her eyes shift to the driver's window where gasoline was pouring over the glass. Gary could see her nostrils flaring. She could smell it. He watched as the utahraptor then observed a small fire flare out from the seams of the dashboard.
It looked to Gary like Tomahawk wanted to tear him apart. It also appeared that she had an understanding of what gasoline plus fire meant. Tomahawk remembered their encounter at the motor pool where gas and fire had been used to ward the pack away. She knew now that she was in mortal danger. With a growl she reversed out of the hatchback on all fours and fled for the jungle, leaving Gary and Daniel to their fate.
