My very first somewhat modern anime. Fairy Tail has a special place in my heart despite what people say about it.
I swear, its like a Marmite situation, people either love it or hate it.
Welp, you know the drill people! Its a self insert story where the MC is stupidly overpowered. Though to be fair, everyone in Fairy Tail is stupidly overpowered.
To be honest, I wanted to speedrun said self-insert's backstory chapter to get it out of the way. Maybe in the future if the fic gains enough traction and I feel like it I could go into more depth. There is honestly enough potential for I'd say 12 5-6k worded chapters regarding the backstory.
...Can you tell I'm the type of DnD player to have pages long backstories for my character?
Anyway, its been a while since I've seen Fairy Tail, I haven't even touched 100 Year Quest either. So my facts may be a bit dodgy.
Please enjoy the chapter.
"Stupid! Damn! Storm!"
Waves crash me about, tumbling me around and causing me to occaisionally hit the sides of the barrel I was in. Constantly flipping over and rolling about, I hardly had time to figure out which way was up.
Didn't help that I vomited a while back, so now I also had to deal with the stench and nausous feeing in my gut, screw motion sickness. This storm lasted hours, just my luck this was where I ended up after I went through that portal.
Ran out of magic power.
Ran out of food and water.
No idea where I am.
I can barely think due to the motion sickness.
Covered in vomit.
My money likely has no real value here when I do get out of this situation.
What fun.
Hi there. My name is Bennett, previous name, forgot due to reasons. A while ago I found myself to be mage in the world of Fairy Tail.
Now thats all well and good one might think, especially since I defilently knew all the plot with encyclopediac knowledge right?
Yeah, no. I watched a lot of anime, and Fairy Tail, while I finished the first anime, never got to the 100 Year Quest in manga or anime form and I sure as hell can't remember everything from a show I watched as a kid.
...Well, I still am a kid. Mentally and physically. Nonetheless, turns out you still get the backlash of motion sickness when you ran out of magic. Ughhhh I need to circumvent that somehow.
Right...getting hard to even think now...running out of air as well since I stole this barrel from a random ship, guess its airtight to keep its old product safe.
I continue banging against the wall of the barrel, desperate to get a hole or crack.
As a Water Dragon Slayer (even if I can't use any spells), I can breath underwater, better yet, I can regain my magic and energy if I am just able to break free from this damn barrel! Curse motion sickness and my noodle kid arms!
Gah! I just got flipped over onto my head again for this past...damn it, I can't even keep track of time properly!
I just went through all that effort to survive and live up to the promises I made, but I'm going to die of suffocation and a typical air seal rune on a food ship?!
No! I won't let it end here! Magic works on bullshit willpower right!? Well come on second origin or whatever, I need that boost in magic!
I went from your below average mage runt to learning two top tier magic! I studied and went through a ton of things just to figure out these two and I sure as heck am not planning to stop there!
I finally got to the good part of this timeline! The part where I had a least a good grasp of the plot!
I want to master beyind the basics of my Slayer Magic. I want to research and learn more magic to have at my disposal! I already sacrificed so much just to have this chance!
I won't die to a fucking barrel!
I continue banging on the barrel.
I continue banging on the barrel.
I continue banging on the...
I continue banging...
I continue...
I...banging...
I...
...
"I am Bennett Doran! Look at me."
What a terrible impression of me.
"I am too good for playing Mages and Dragons and prefer books over people!" Another kid in the same tribe as me did a mock impression of myself, making an exxagerated posh and hauty expression as they turn the page of a imaginary book.
"Ah lay off it, everyone knows the runt needs to study as much as he can. He can't even master his family's specialty, the Cool Blue." A girl who was part of my generation laughed along with the first kid.
"Oh oh! I heard his dad thinks his mom cheated on him with the Head of the Purifying Indigo!" Another boy joins in with my collective teasing "I mean it makes sense right. Other than Purifying Indigo, Bennet can't use any of the other flames except red! And everyone knows red."
I zone them out. I can't help but eavesdrop sometimws but they should really come up with some new insults.
I may only know the Red and Indigo Flames, but, I am ok with that. I know how this world works, maybe fire is just not my affinity.
Bennett Doran here, 4th son of the Doran family and we have the trait of sky blue hair to signify us, except those who marry into the family.
We are a part of the Fire God Tribe, that was one of the first few facts drilled into my head when I suddenly received an influx of memories at a tender age of toddler-year old.
A hardy bunch of people, but while I personally like the aesthetic they got going on here, there is a clear hierarchy of magic that leads me to be an outcast of sorts. At least the adults are subtle about it and it is not as bad as lets say Naruto's treatment.
Ah, guess I should explain.
The Fire God Tribe, as the name indicates, revolves around teaching its mages fire magic. Specificaly they strive to teach their members Rainbow Fire.
It's an ooooollllllllld tribe, its traditions and fire magic date back farther than our grandparent's grandparent's at least. And it shows, trust me on that. Don't bother asking me all the rules, I didn't bother reading all of it.
On the plus side, growing up in a tribe like this means I also had the chance to learn this magic, which I took to like a moth to flame!
I mean. Come on, its magic for crying out loud. This is a dream come true! So what if I have less capacity than normal kids? So what if it takes me longer to instinctually get a handle on my magic power?
Magic itself though, its fun to research and play round with. Though, that may be because in my previous life we had no magic. My mind wanders back into my makeshift ink and scroll paper, The Fire God Tribe exclusively used Rainbow Fire, so I hardly had much to truly forget since I commited myself to learning as much magic as I can.
I turn a page in my book, its actually just a children's storybook the Tribe provides to children who are interested. It is in regard's to the creation myth the Tribe believes in, so while the adults who are allowing the verbal abuse occur see me reading this sacred book, they'll make sure it never gets physical and the book would not get damaged out of respect of their God. A nice little magic trick to keep me safe.
Speaking of magic! Though I can't use most of it, let me explain Rainbow Fire, its absolutely wonderous! It is split into 7 types of flame and leads into another type of magic. But as the name would suggest, the main spells of Rainbow Fire correlate to a certain color.
Long story short, other than the Purifying Indigo and Red Flame spell. I can't use any of the tribe's magic.
That's not to say I lack talent...well, I do, but that can be ammended with hard work if I wanted those spells that badly.
"Oi! Doran's son. It is time to do your bit for the village and make sure old man Lonaz hasn't kicked the bucket." An adult pops their head through the entrance of the tent opening and says it casually before leaving.
There was no hate or overt dislike in his voice or tone, just dismissive. Thats how most adults acted around me. Since after all, I was a magic user. Despite having seemingly no talent as a mage, I was still a mage. I had no idea if the whole of Ishgar was the same, but mages that were able to wield Caster Magic, magic that came from oneself were one in ten. I guess that explained the show more, since everyone including NPCs used magic items to live their lives.
Well, back onto track though. Other than my admittidly sever lack of talent in fire magic, there is a actual reason why I did not develop it further.
"Ok, I'll head there now." I say to nobody in particular, the man who gave me the job was already gone, but it was important to keep the idea I was subservient and polite to adults in the tribe while in front of the glorified babysitters.
The kids on the other hand...
"Its a match made in heaven, you and Loony Lonaz!"
"Hey hey, maybe the reason why the runt of Doran's family always helps out Loony Lonaz is because thats his real father!"
Geez, what is this, a soap opera? How did you all come to that conclusion?
I soon close my book, the same one I've read countless times now before I stand up and leave the tent without much fanfare or interacting with anyone there.
Because now, I had an excuse to make some real progress with my magic.
Heading to Lonaz's hut was a small trial in of itself, it was located far into the outskirts and practically isolated.
Good.
I always liked that about the location, it left me to be able to freely train up my magic without fear for being found out by the tribe. They dislike tribe members learning anything besides fire magic.
I approach the front door, as I do so I hear the familiar voice of old man Lonaz.
"Nyohoho! You are such a naughty spirit, Virgo. Truly the clothes from the Celestial Realm bring out such beauty from you!" Yep, defilently Lonaz "As well as that bust!"
I repeat, defilently Lonaz. Got that whole Roshi thing going on.
"Oh Master, I am pleased that my attire is sufficient. Is it punishment time?" Virgo asks in her usual monotone voice.
"How could I ever punish you, Virgo! You are an angel! Now as much as I would like to stare all day, that magic nut should arrive right around now. I summoned you to help me clean up." Lonaz states.
I think now is a good time to knock on the front door.
"The magic nut is here!" I take a step back while half yelling the sound proofing of houses in the tribe are frankly terrible, to be fair, we live in tents "The studious one, and not the white gooey one, thankfully."
The door opens as I see old man Lonaz greet me with a wide grin "Nyohoho! That was one of your weaker jokes, boy!"
"Young Master Bennet. I am glad to see you." Virgo follows after Lonaz as she respectfully bows towards me, noticably a glint in her eye.
Ah dangit, she is expecting something from me again...
"Today I want to practice magic." I state.
"As you do every day." Lonaz grins.
"I also wanted to test out a few new spell ideas I brewed."
"As you do every day, boy."
"I also want to continue to try and master the spells I previously tried out. Would you mind if I used the area around here to train? Mister Lonaz?"
"Nyohoho! I told you before, boy. Feel free to to do whatever you want around here. I won't tell a single soul from that darned tribe of ours." Lonaz reassuringly hits me on the back "You always ask the same things so politely every day. The Gods only know how such a good kid came from that cutthroat family..."
He trails off before laughing suddenly.
"Virgo and I shall clean up so we can offer you some snacks later, you ned some muscle on you, boy and you're in luck. A dragon scared off a bunch of animals for me to hunt in the area." Lonaz states before heading back into his tent.
"Later on. Can I ask Virgo to be the one to test out some spells of mine? None of them will aim to hurt her of course." I state.
I swear the glint in Virgo's eyes are practically glowing.
"Eh, why not. You truly would make an amazing Celestial Spirit Mage, boy. You know how to play Virgo like a fiddle, and how old are you again uh...6?" Lonaz moves a finger to his chin as he takes a contemplative expression.
"I'm 8 already. And, with all due respect, I think Virgo is the one who plays me..." I glance over to Virgo as she looks like a child during Christmas upon hearing I will test out more spells on her.
"Whatever you say, Young Master. Shall it be punishment time after I finish cleaning?" She has a noticable fire in her usual monotone voie.
"..." Well, at least she is eager "Again I will say it won't hurt. But these spells are made in mind to use against potential enemies, so in a way it is punishment time, yes."
"I shall work twice as hard!" Virgo quickly rushes into Lonaz's tent who follows after her.
Virgo...
To be honest I was quite surprised when I first saw Lonaz summon the Maiden herself. Virgo noticably looked slightly shorter and younger than in the show but with knowing how time passes in the Celestial Spirit realm, that is to be expected.
Old man Lonaz...was one of the cases of all time. The adults speak of Lonaz sometimes, and dislike him as despite Lonaz being from one of the tribe's core families like me, had absolutely no talent in fire magic at all. But had a talent for Celestial Spirit Magic. Given his age which demmanded respect and the fact he was a mage, the people tolerated Lonaz as long as he was friendly and occaisionally helped out the tribe but hardly liked him.
There's probably more context and details, but I havent exactly gone out of my way to uncover them just yet.
Well, whatever. I can think on that later...
Its magic time!
Not to brag...but I'm somewhat of a genius myself.
"Water Dragon's Roar." I aim towards a nearby boulder which fires a beam of pressurized water, it cracks it by a decent amount.
Progress.
"Yes! I was finally able to chip off something instead of just scratching off the surface!" I exclaim, you wouldn't believe how long that took "Marisa Kirisame...I understand your pain. surrounded by those talented by magic..."
People in the Fire God tribe are tried for magic potential when they are born. And are taught magic as soon as they can walk and talk.
I am not kidding when I say I had a smaller than average magic container. Not to mention barely had any talent in the clan's magic. To othets it came as naturally as breathing, to most it came as naturally as flexing a muscle.
Believe me I tried. I applied my knowledge of gases, how fire works, and the molecular structure of typical fire and everything. I could've worked harder maybe, but rather than mastering that branch of magic...
"Why couldn't you learn the family spell, are you stupid?"
"Only knowing two flames at this age, its those damn books and scrolls you always read!"
"The other kids at magic practice teased me today because I'm related to you, I have to work extra hard so our family name isn't dragged through the mud! You are the worst, brother!"
"Are...you truly my son?"
I could care less for what the tribe or my family from that tribe think of me.
Ugh, now I feel slightly pissed off. That's good, anger is a good conduit to use magic I find. While I'm still in this emotional state lets test out this little theory of mine...
I bend forward slightly and crouch my legs a bit, a familiar magic circle appears in front of my hands after I clasp them together.
I'll use the same amount of magic power as the Roar spell. The general idea behind it is to guide the flames a prticular way and control them to not leak out any magic for a conentrated blast.
Well, what's stopping me from condensing it further? Pressurizing it even more? It is practically the same technique, the same amount of energy put into it, just masteted more. Understood more. As for why I chose to train in this way? Well, as I stated before, my magic container started of small.
At the beginning before my etherano capacity training, I had to think of ways to circumvent past and overcoming opponents with more magic stamina than me so to speak and could afford to mindlessly pump in more magic into an attack to overpower my reserves.
So I began thinking...remembering.
And I remembered something. Did you know if water was shot out through high enough pressure, it can cut through diamond? Thats what they use in some industries.
Imaginaton is key to magic. And I had more than enough thanks to my past life.
"Water Dragon's Piercing Blood."
A laser of water is fired, the sudden force of the shot had thrown me back, making the aim go all over the place and slamming my back onto the ground below, making a small crater.
"Wh-What the hell!" I mutter out inbetween coughs "That worked way too well!"
I can't help but smile. Those results were far better than expected!
"Boy! Is everything ok?!" Lonaz bursts through he door to check up on me, seeing me and looking around with sight widening of his eyes "My word..."
"I'm more than ok...it was a success!" I soon catch my breath I look to the boulder, my grin widening.
My aim was way off, but that clean cut through he stone is unmistakable, some of the surrounding ground and trees have been cleaved through as well.
"Young Master, have you been injured sigificantly?" I hear Virgo ask as she walks up to me.
"Th-This is a good chance actually to test another spell." I am still slightly winded from the sudden launch but its not like I took an arrow to the knee or anything "You could say it just a small...rain on my parade."
"Nyohoho! If you a joke around like that, you surely must be fine. What spell, was you able to finally unlock the green healing flames from the clan?" Lonaz visibly calms down "Virgo, forget the clean up for now. We should keep a eye on the tyke and stop him from blowing himself up."
"L-Lightning form."
With forced focus, I physically change my wounds to sparks of lightning itself. I've come far, when I found out I had no talent for the clan's magic I was quick to not waste time and went through the clan's minor storage.
Why? Well things such as unusable magic spells or notes from dead bandits or outsiders are stored there. Apparently that was also where Lonaz learnt his Celestial Spirit Magic, he was the one who told me about the place.
Sadly, I didn't have any talent in the simple Lightning spell either...but anything but learning magic from that clan. It took a lot of sleepless knights, remembering high school physics, stealing ideas and applications from countless fictional characters. I was by all means talentless as ever.
Until today.
"Are...you turning your body itself into an element?..." Lonaz gasps at the display "By the gods...you're on crazy boy..."
Wait this was impressive? I remember Juvia's own water body raising a few eyebrows but it didn't warrant a reaction like this. I was half sure she had an old teammate in Phantom Lord with a much more impressive Air Form.
"Young Master...your wounds are healing when you turn back your lighting into flesh. But I sense no Healing Magic in play." Virgo stares as well slightly "I see now, it is similar to an ability I observed from Aquarius...by turning your own injured body parts into lightning, your injuries translate to incomplete lighting, your magic itself replenishes this lightning and when you turn back into a person your wounds are healed as a response."
Is it really that impressive? If I had to guess changing one's body into an elememt hasn't been invented by humans in this era yet.
"My word...what an ingenious way to heal your own body, I've not heard anything like it before. You really are a magic nut, boy." Lonaz has a wide grin again, gotten over the mystisism "Nyohoho, we have got to tell that old lizard Typhon about this."
Typhon...the teacher of my Water Dragon Slayer Magic. I do not know how or when, but Lonaz knew Typhon from before I was born.
I stand up, now fully healed.
"It was a good first step, yeah." I nod at Lonaz as I look to my own palm generating a magic circle to produce a spark in the air.
Compared to Juvia who can seamlessly turn into water without focusing, even accidentially.
Compared to logia users from One Piece who can reflexively turn their entire body or part of it into an element to avoid damage.
Compared to the sheer elemental prowess of dragons who can one shot me an render this spell uselss.
"Its not enough though. I need to master this alongside other spells." I focus on keeping the spark alight, if I can learn to consistently use this magic all the time, I can work up to mastering Lightning Form "Another thing to the list."
"..." Lonaz stares at me for a moment with a complicated look before grinning "Nyohoho! If this isn't what they call Youth's Passion then I don't know what. You keep adding more and more to that list of yours, I'll never get a good chance to teach you Celestial Spirit Magic."
"That's not true. I could add Celestial Spirit magic to the list when I find some keys. I'll be old enough to leave the tribe to hunt and scavenge soon." I talk while trying to keep the spark alive the ability to multitask is invaluable "I need to invest time to learn all sorts of Holder Type Magic too..."
I'm in a world on a time limit with countless threats that I cannot avoid. It is not a case as simple as moving out of the area and letting canon play out as normal.
Depending on the timeline I am in, and the fact I plan to hitchhike the gate to the year 777 I'll have to deal with worldwide threats.
I need power to live.
For that, despite being talentless, despite having a smaller magic container than most. I need to put in the effort now.
Ah- I let the spark go out. Something to work on in the future. My magic reserves are steadily increasing, so I could keep going. But...if Lonaz and Virgo are just going to keep watching then...
"Virgo. Is now a good time for me to test my spells? Thank you for always indulging my requests, by the way." I turn to the pink haired maiden.
"Of course, young Master. How should I prepare? A collar, or perhaps a whip?" A very Virgo response.
"No, just you will be fine thank you. You don't have to stand too far away from me, just far enough from Mister Lonaz's tent to not risk it getting damaged if things go arwy." I mention.
Virgo moves eagerly to the spot I had gestured to, with a slight jump in her step betraying her eagerness. Geez, she is really looking forward to this huh.Though, for very different reasons I am looking forward to it too.
"Water Dragon's Kraken Clutch."
From various circles around Virgo, several water tendrils are expelled which wtap around Virgo.
"Bondage play..!" Virgo exclaims? She isn't exactly shouting or anything.
"Try breaking out of it please. I wanted to ask you since you are super strong." I say to Virgo before she went off into her own little world.
Rather than hyper efficient Moulding Magic, the spell Kraken's Clutch is my attempt at stepping into changing the properties of my water. I have to consider aspects such as temperature, pressure, shape while maintaining constant magic into it which is wasted due to not being a part of the Water-Make sub family of water magics.
It is important to train up this skill to at least a usable level.
"And not you want to watch me struggle...thank you for the punishment time, Young Master!" Virgo stuggles quite a bit.
Well...whatever makes her happy. After some seconds of struggling, Virgo is able to break free from the clutches of the spell, she looks a little dissapointed at doing so. I hold out a single fist, creating a dull grey magi circle.
"Let's start the next spell immediately. Tungsten Make: Chains." I state, I can mentally hear Gray yelling at me to use two handed Make-Magic.
"Just like my own chains. Young Master, did my attire inspire this spell perchance?" Virgo glances to her own manackes and chains.
Hm, why does she always wear those anyway?
"A little. I see you almost every day so chains were the first thing I thought of. Though I still had to do image training." I tell Virgo.
"Nyohoho, I remember when you first told me about that training last year, boy. I thought you were crazy." Lonaz, who had been silently watching till now has spoken "Gave this old man quite the fright when I lit an oil lantern and found you licking chains in the darkness of the forest. How on Earthland did you know it would work?"
I totally ripped it off from Kurapika's visualization training.
"It made sense in my head, Moulding Magic relies upon the imagination of a user which is why different people have different spells even if they use the same element or type of moulding magic." I try to manipulate the chains I had conjured, but to no avail "I didn't just lick chains in the forest either, turns out I have no talent for Tungsten Magic at all. Just to create this spell, I had to feel chains with my eyes closed, sleep with chains, smell chains, listen to chains, as you said lick chains, drawing sketches and making paintings of chains, smelled them, stared at them and a whole other bunch of stuff."
I step back as I give up on manipulating the chains the old fasioned way, as I produce a blue magic circle which lets out blue sparks of electricity.
I did all that training to conjure chains but I still didn't even master a single spell. I got my work cut out for me.
"Lets try this then...Lightning Magnetism." I'll think of a better name for it in the future.
I aim the spell towards the chains as they start to rise.
"I still have to rely on a two spell combo to use a single spell, so wasteful..." I mutter to myself as with a fair bit if quickness the chains wrap around Virgo "Virgo, tell me if the lightning hurts you or not. It is not supposed to."
"O-Oooh. It feels ticklish, but juxtaposed with the hard and cold sensation of the chains. You have potential, Young Master." Virgo has a happy expression.
Potential in what exactly Virgo? I hope you mean as a wizard, Virgo.
"Tungsten...not a metal I've heard before." Lonaz mentions as he witnesses my spellcraft "But its as heavy as gold but harder than iron, where did you come across this metal?"
While alternate worlds are not an uncommon thing in fairy tail, people don't know about it. I shouldn't tell people my origins, never understood fanfictions where in the first chapter or so they trauma dump everything to the first named character they recognize.
"Saw it in a book." It has become my answer to everything nowadays.
I soon let up the spell, causing the chains to dissapear.
"Whew...I need a drink of water now." Water to me, a water dragon slayer is vital to regain magic "I'm starting to feel a bit tired from magic exhaution. I'm goijg to the river nearby, Mister Lonaz, Virgo. Please tell me if you need me for anything."
I make a polite bow before helping Virgo up and ptting her clothes slightly to not leave creases before walking off towards the direction of the lake near Lonaz's tent.
Beforehand, I had to carefully manage my etherano amount in my body, cast enough spells to promote significant growth of my magic container while not harming myself or putting myself at risk of magic deficiency.
But Water Dragon Slayer magic is such a cheat! I can replenish magic by drinking water...so its hyper efficient grinding! an RPG player's dream come true!
I wouldn't give up this magic for anything.
