TV Announcer: Go-Avengers! Heroes of the Gamma War! Long ago, there was an age of heroes, when the Avengers kept the forces of darkness at bay. Until, consumed by his fury, the Hulk unleashed terrors the likes of which the world had never known. Their soul purpose? To destroy! In humanity's darkest hour, the Iron Man found inspiration in an idea.
Turns out, a girl was watching an old TV show.
Girl: [gasps] No! Oh, come on, Avengers, don't fail me now. Mom! The internet's not working! Didn't you reboot the modem? I'm trying to watch that old show. [feels rumble] What? Mom, what's going on? [runs from roof falling] [screaming]
She then sees giant monsters attacking the city!
Watcher: Time. Space. Reality. It's more than a linear path. It's a prism of endless possibility, where a single can branch out into infinite realities, creating alternate worlds from the ones you know. I am the Watcher. I am your guide through these vast new realities. Follow me and ponder the question... "What if?" Big things have small beginnings. So let me take you back to the dawn of the Gamma War, which all began with a friendship.
We see Bruce Banner going on a jog.
Bruce: [pants] Oh, God. Who likes doing this? [panting]
Sam: [passes by Bruce] On your left.
Bruce: Yep, you're good, buddy. Okay. [sits down] [panting]
Sam: Hey, you're doin' all right? 'Cause you're looking a little...
Bruce: Oh, wait, let me guess. Green? [both laughs]
Sam: [helps Bruce up] Sam Wilson.
Bruce: Dr. Bruce Banner. [gets up] [grunts]
Sam: Yeah, I kinda put that together.
Bruce: Uh-huh?
Sam: Looked like you were pushin' it out there.
Bruce: [inhales sharply] I mean, yeah. I--I read somewhere that cardio is a good stress reliver. I've been trying everything lately. Yoga, knitting, cooking shows. But I mean--
Sam: You ever just try talkin' to someone?
Bruce: Huh?
Watcher: Sam Wilson sought to help the brilliant doctor with a field of science far different from his own.
Bruce: The rage isn't even the worst part when he takes over.
Watcher: Therapy.
Bruce: It's the fear. The fear I see in everyone else's eyes.
Sam: And how does that make you feel?
Bruce: [inhales sharply] Lonely. Because if I'm being honest, I'm just as scared of myself as they are of me.
Sam: Well, look around you. Ain't no one's afraid of you here, Bruce.
Watcher: Sam Wilson knew he had a resonsibility to Banner as his counselor. But in that moment, he saw a man struggling and felt he could do more to help him as a friend.
Soon, Sam took Bruce on a boat trip at sea.
Bruce: I like this. This is a great boat, man.
Sam: [laughs]
Bruce: Throw me another brew, would ya?
Watcher: But there are some forces of nature that cannot be controlled.
Suddendly, a storm started to appear. As Sam tires to lower the line, a ship mace was about to hit Sam's crewmate, but Banner took it, unleashing the Hulk!
Sam: Bruce.
Hulk: [growling loudly] [starts to smash the deck]
Sam: Bruce, no! Bruce, come on, man. It's me. It's Sam.
Watcher: It turns out there was still one side of Banner...
Sam: No, no, no, Bruce!
Hulk: [jumps into the sky] [grunts]
Watcher: ...he didn't want his friend to see. So he took matters into his own hands.
We see Bruce trying to get rid of the Hulk.
Bruce: Gamma put this monster in me, I've gotta believe it could take it out.
He then shots himself with Gamma rays. But...
Watcher: Unfortunately, things didn't pan out the way Dr. Banner had planned. And in trying to expel the beast within, Bruce Banner created a whole new monster, and sit it free. Forged in Gamma and unrestrained by Banner's conscience, the threat grew in size and number as this Apex and his legions rampaged across the glode. With everything at stake, the Avengers realized that to fight these bigger, meaner Hulks, they would need bigger, meaner Hulk-Busters. And so, Earth's mightiest heroes fought, and fell. And in their sacrifice, inspired the surviving heroes to finish the fight. They chased the last of the monsters to the end of the world. Until there was nothing left of them. Or so it was believed. Of course, issues left unresolved rarely stay buried for long.
Ten years later, after the Gamma War.
We then see Captain America, Sam, The Winter Soldier and Captain Rambeau in their Hulk-Busters flying to the Helicarrier, then talking to the others Avenger members. These include Shang-Chi, Shuri, Moon Knight, the Red Guardian and Melina.
Captain America: This is the worst-case scenario, folks. At 1100 hours, Chicago and a dozer other major cities were attacked by Gamma Beasts. And more are merging every hour. Captain Rambeau?
Captain Rambeau: This could be a wave triple the size of the one we faced in the old Gamma War.
Moon Knight: Yeah. And tha one took out all the Avengers. So, if anyone ordered a death wish--
Red Guardian: Argh! These Gamma grunts try to set foot in Mother Russia. But one face-off with the Red Guardian--
Melina: Can you really call it a face-off when you just ran away?
Red Guardian: I was luring the beasts away from civilians.
Melina: Mmm-hmm.
Red Guardian: Like hero!
Shang-Chi: Okay. The point is, there's more of them this time, okay? But where are these beasts even coming from?
Shuri: Our satellites are picking up a Gamma signature in the Arctic with the same isotopic fingerprint as the original Apex beast.
Captain Rambeau: We need to get Bruce Banner on this.
Captain America: No.
Winter Soldier: Sore subject. Noted.
Captain Rambeau: Sam--
Captain America: We know how to win this war. We've done it before. Monica and I will head to the Arctic and cut this things off at the knees.
Red Guardian: Small note. I would go for head.
Melina: [sighs]
Red Guardian: Much more final.
Captain America: Now, the rest of you, focus on holding your territories. Barnes, yo have the conn. Start prepping your mech, Rambeau. We're wheels-up within the hour. [leaves]
Captain Rambeau: [sighs] Bucky, we won the last war by the skin of our teeth. You do not get that lucky twice.
Winter Soldier: You really think Banner's a better bet?
Captain Rambeau: I mean, this all started with him. Maybe he can finish it. See what you can find.
Winter Soldier: I saw on some cartoon he lives in a lair in the center of an active volcano.
Captain Rambeau: Get to it. [leaves]
Winter Soldier: The show's pretty great.
The two soon entered the Arctic with their mechs.
Captain Rambeau: Cap, confirming the Gamma signature. It's massive.
Captain America: Then I guess we're here. [both land]
They soon started to look for something. But suddendly, a Gamma Beast came bursting threw the ice!
Captain America: [falls back] Monica, look out! [sees Gamma Beast] I guess we just found the spike.
Captain Rambeau: [runs towards Gamma Beast] [grunts] Oh, yeah, you want some?
The two started to fight to the Gamma Beast, but are losing. Soon, two more Gamma Beasts came out!
Captain America: I'm thinkin' big guns.
Captain Rambeau: Oh, yeah. I'm thinking very big guns.
The two then started to fire their weapons at the three Gamma Beasts. Suddendly, the ground exploded.
Captain Amria Whoa! What'd you just fire? A nuke?
Captain Rambeau: Well, that's not me. Something else is happening.
The two soon sink into the water, reveiling more Gamma Beasts coming out!
Captain America: Monica, you seein' what I'm seein'?
Captain Rambeau: It's worse than we thought. There's thousands of them.
When the two reached the bottom, they launch back up and landed on a higher iceberg, seeing...
Captain America: The Apex.
Apex: [growling loudly]
Gamma Beasts: [bows to it]
Captain Rambeau: They're listening to him.
Captain America: And awaiting orders. This isn't an infestion. It's an invasion.
Apex: [roars]
The Apex roar created a powerful shockwave the cracked the ice and send the two back into the water! As the ice started to crack and break, the Apex lead the Gamma Beasts into the water. Later on...
Captain Rambeau: [gets call] [answers it] Bucky, you got news for me?
Winter Soldier: Officially, Banner's location doesn't even exist. But I found it anyway.
Captain Rambeau: A blank site?
Winter Soldier: Abandoned, but something there must have caught his interest.
Captain Rambeau: Mmm. [ends call] Then, I guess I'm on deck. Sam?
Captain America: We gotta get ourselves back in the sky.
Captain Rambeau: So we can just get our asses handed to us all over again?
Captain America: Stop playing.
Captain Rambeau: You know who we need.
Captain America: Again with this.
Captain Rambeau: [sighs]
Captain America: Look, he's the one who got us into this mess.
Captain Rambeau: What I don't understand is why you seem more scared of Bruce Banner than you are of those Gamma Beasts. There was a time whenhe was your friend, Sam.
Captain America: And look how that turned out. For everybody.
Captain Rambeau: You tried to help him. It didn't take. But now, like it or not, the two of you talking is the only thing standing between us and the end of the world.
Captain America: I don't even know where he is.
Captain Rambeau: Hmm. Then it's a good thing I had Barnes go behind your back to find out.
Captain America: [scoffs] You didn't.
Captain Rambeau: Oh, I did.
Soon, Sam went to find Bruce, which was an abandoned island in the Astra Islands. He then went into the island's jungle, where he found...
Captain America: Bruce?
Bruce: Who were you expecting, Sam? A monster?
He then takes Sam to where he was living at.
Bruce: Well, here we are. Bit of a fixer-upper, but I call it home.
Captain America: A nuclear combat bomber? Really?
Bruce: Yeah. I don't know. An abandoned government pet project somehow felt like the right fit.
Captain America: Hmm.
Bruce: And the leftover made for a half-decent lab.
Captain America: Right.
The two soon entered the plane, where a nuke was being held.
Bruce: I'm gonna guess you didn't come all this way for my little science fair.
Captain America: Yeah, I'm afraid not.
Bruce: What is it this time? Alien? Spooky wizards? Evil gods?
Captain America: A new Apex has risen.
Bruce: What?
Captain America: Now, just hear me out--
One explanation later...
Bruce: No, no, no.
Captain America: What do you mean, "No"?
Bruce: It's been years since I've had an incident. I can't throw all that work away.
Captain America: The Apex's legions are thousand-strong. I don't know if we can take this guy down, not without a Gamma Beast of our own in the fight.
Bruce: [sighs heavily] I--I can't do it, Sam. Not like that. [gets up]
Captain America: Bruce, come on, man. We're talking about the end of the world here. We need you.
Bruce: [sighs] No, Sam. What you need is this. [pulls out plug-in]
Captain America: And what is this?
Bruce: It's a plug-in for the mech's interface.
He then plugs it into his computer to show what it has on it.
Bruce: I call it the Mighty Avenger Protocol.
Captain America: Whoa.
Bruce: Yeah. Use it against the Apex and you should have a fighting chance.
Captain America: [pulls out plug-in] So that's it, huh? The rest of the world gets to fight your monsters while you just hide in fear?
Bruce: Fear? What do you know about fear, Sam? About being a threat. A living force of destruction.
Captain America: I know you can't get past the things that scare you if you don't face them.
Bruce: [sighs] Why do you think I built this protocol?
Captain America: You built it to use agains youself?
Bruce: I built it to protect everyone from a monster no one can control.
Captain America: [walks away] Look, I've never seen a monster when I look at you, Bruce. I've only ever seen my friend. I guess I hoped if you faced this thing, then maybe you'd see what I see, too. [leaves]
Soon, Sam got back into his mech, leaving Bruce behind.
Captain Rambeau: [on comms] Talk to me, Cap.
Captain America: I think I've done enough talkin' for one day. Thank you.
Captain Rambeau: Then I take it Bruce isn't coming?
Captain America: No. We're on our own.
Captain Rambeau: Not entirely. The team and I are tracking the Apex and his herd to New York. They're gonna make landfall any minute.
Captain America: Banner did give me something to work with. [inserts plug-in]
Captain Rambeau: [she and others get protocol] "The Mighty Avenger Protocol"?
Shang-Chi: Banner built this?
Red Guardian: Great, 'cause none of his science experiments have ever gone sideways.
Shuri: A weapon this complex has never been field-tested.
Winter Soldier: How do we know he hasn't gone full Colonel Krutz in his volcano?
Moon Knight: Yeah, even if he hasn't, if we run this op and we all go down, the world will be left defenseless.
Captain America: But this is the shot we have. We may not get another one.
Captain Rambeau: Well, then we better take it soon. Because the invasion has already begun.
Soon, the final battle has begun. Captain America came in and they flew up and soon, they all activates the Mighty Avenger Protocol when he said...
Captain America: Avenger, assamble.
That's when the mech soon combined with each other to become the Mighty Avenger! The battle began again and they took down some of the Gamma Beasts! But when taken on the Apex, they lost.
Captain America: Come on, people. We gotta get up. We didn't come here to lose today.
Shuri: Yeah, not gonna happen. All systems critical.
Melina: Wait, I'm picking up something.
Suddendly, something punched the Apex, sending it flying, and a beam of nuclear and ice attacked the Gamma Beasts! Turns out, the attacks came from Kong, Godzilla and Shimu!
Kong, Godzilla and Shimu: [roars]
Red Guardian: What are those?
Shuri: Looks like rinforcement!
Captain Rambeau: Uh, Cap? There's somethng else, in the sky.
Captain America: How's that possible? We don't have any mechs left.
Captain Rambeau: No, it's not a mech. It's a...
Turns out, it was Bruce Banner in his plane!
Bruce: On your left, Cap.
Captain America: Bruce?
Bruce: Hah! Yeah. Though you might need something that packed a bigger punch. So I gave the bomb an upgrade, a fresh Gamma core.
Winter Soldier: What? No. He can't release all that energy over the city.
Shuri: He's not. He's going to take it all in. He's going Gamma critical.
Captain Rambeau: Whoa, whoa, that--that's too much power. He may never come back from it.
Captain America: Bruce, there are other ways. You don't wanna do this.
Bruce: You know what's funny? I do.
He then drops the bomb towards the ground!
Captain America: Bruce!
Bruce: It's okay, Sam. For the first time in a long time, I'm not afraid.
He soon absords the Gamma, creating a massive explosion! When the smoke cleared, there lies Mega Hulk!
Mega Hulk: [roaring]
Soon, the two monsters started to fight as th Gamma Beasts watched!
Melina: It appears the smaller ones are watching the fight. To see who comes out on top.
Captain America: That's why he nuked himself. Not just to kill the Apex, to replace it.
Mega Hulk was doing well, but the Apex pinned him down. Sam help him by sending a fist towards the Apex, moving him away from Mega Hulk! Then, Mega Hulk blasted the Apex with his Gamma breath, destroying and absording it, making him the new Apex!
Shuri: [gasps] It looks like we have a new Apex.
Mega Hulk: [turns to face Avengers] [roars]
Shuri: Mega Hulk.
Moon Knight: Nope. No, thank you. [presses button to put guns out] [as he and other Avengers grabs the guns] Khonshu says light him up!
Captain America: Avenger Team, stand down! Stand down!
Winter Soldier: Are you kidding me? We've go a giant Mega Hulk inbound.
Captain America: I said, stand down.
He then started to walk towards Mega Hulk, to convince him to stop.
Captain America: Hey! Hey! Over here! Bruce, come on! What do you say, Bruce? It's me, Sam.
Mega Hulk then started to look down at Sam, with his eye infront of him.
Captain America: Hey, it's just us. Take it easy. I know you've always been scared that everyone just sees you as a monster. But from where I'm standin', all I see now is a friend. And I'd bet my life tha you still see one, too.
After a few seconds of Mega Hulk staring at Sam, he lead the Gamma Beasts away from the city. As he did, the Watcher was watching.
Watcher: Big things have small beginnings. Even the way a person sees thmselves can change their lives and the fate of the entire world. But in humanity's darkest hour, sometimes the greatest heroes are the friend who accept you for who we are.
