Chapter 28

Max Caulfield x Mark Jefferson

AN: The characters (aside my OC) belong to Don't Nod and Square Enix. "" means talking, '' means texting or describing a feeling or attitude, italics means thinking.

As Max was standing in front of her locker, collecting some of her belongings. She had agreed with Kate to meet her for tea this afternoon, once she was done helping Mr. Jefferson for the week. She did not notice when Nathan came walking up to her.

"Max Caulfield." Nathan said.

"What do you want?" Max said cautiously as she turned to face him.

"I know." Nathan said in a low voice, even though the hallway was empty.

"Know what?" Max said looking at him suspiciously.

"What you're…" Nathan said before a scream interrupted him.

Both Max and Nathan looked over on the direction of where the scream came from.

"That sounded like it came from the photography classroom." Max said before she started to run with Nathan following her, soon catching up before taking the lead.

When they got to the photography classroom, Nathan burst through the door with Max following him and saw that Mr. Jefferson was just about to assault Kate. Without thinking Nathan grabbed hold of Mr. Jefferson while Max ran up to Kate. As Nathan and Mr. Jefferson was wrestling on the floor, Max took Kate outside to comfort her.

"It's ok Kate, you're safe." Max said in a calm voice while running soothing circles on her back.

"I- I don't k-know w-what ha-happened." Kate sobbed. "One mo-moment he was j-just doing some w-work on his laptop w-while drinking his usual cu-up of coffee." She sobbed. "And before I knew it, he was all over me." Kate said as her crying let up a little. "It's as if he turned into another person all together." She said as she looked at Max.

"Let's get you back to the dorm." Max said as she helped Kate back up on her feet. "Our tea date can wait until another time if you no longer feel up for it." Max said as they left the building and headed for the dorms. "I hope he wasn't drugged again. But I fear he might have been." Max thought as she led Kate to the dorms.

Once there, Max followed Kate into her room to make sure that she felt safe before leaving.

"Max." Kate said as Max was just about to open the door. "Thank you." Kate said as she walked up and gave Max a tight hug.

"Shit!" Max thought as she saw Kate's eyes go wide as she stepped back from the hug.

"Max?" Kate said as she looked Max over. "Are you…" she said but was interrupted by Max.

"I'm just very bloated today." Max quickly lied before backing away from Kate and leaving the room in a hurry.

"But, Max…" Kate said as the door closed. "You're… glowing." She finished as she sat down on her bed as she realised what Max was trying to hide. "She's been a good friend to me, so I'll be a good friend to her and not say anything." Kate thought.

Back in the photography lab, Nathan had managed to subdue Mr. Jefferson with a successful hit to his face. But who knows how long he would be out. When Max entered the room again Nathan quickly got up and put Mr. Jefferson in a sitting position against his desk.

"Will he be alright?" Max asked as she knelt in front of Mr. Jefferson while inspecting the injury on his face.

"Eventually." Nathan said as he cradled his left hand.

"Did you do this?" Max asked as she motioned for the injury on Mr. Jefferson face.

"I had to, it was the only way to make him calm down." Nathan said.

"What do you think happened to make him act that way?" Max asked as she decided to check Nathans hand. "You should have that hand checked as well." She said before kneeling in front of Mr. Jefferson again.

"He got drugged." Nathan said in a confident voice.

"How would you know?" Max said as she eyed him suspiciously.

"Because I warned him about it." Nathan said as he sat down in one of the many chairs.

"You warned… Nathan do you know who did this?" Max said in an accusatory voice making Nathan look away in shame. "You know who it is, just tell me." Max said as she got up.

"It's Vic alright." Nathan said in a raised voice. "She went ahead with it even though I told her to drop it on multiple occasions." Nathan said as he put his head in his good hand.

"Nathan, have she tried this before?" Max asked.

"Yes." Nathan finally admitted as he was filled with shame. "On multiple occasions." He finished.

"Nathan, drugging a teacher is a serious offence, hell, knowingly drugging anyone is a serious crime." Max said as she got her phone out.

"W-who are you calling?" Nathan said as he shot out from the chair.

"My cousin." Max said as she backed away from Nathan as he tried to grab hold of her phone. "Stop it." Max yelled. "She'll know something is up if I call and I'm not talking to her." Max yelled again as she put the phone against her ear. "He got drugged again." Max said when her cousin answered the phone. "I'm alright, but my friend Kate…" Max said to her cousin. "She's fine, me and another student got into the classroom in time to stop whatever could have happened." Max said as she saw that Nathan had started to walk back and forth in the classroom. "Ok, I'll speak to you later, thank you for sorting it." Max said as she hung up the phone.

"Well?" Nathan asked once Max hung up on the phone. "What did she say?"

"She said that she would call someone from the Arcadia Bay PD and whoever coming is going to need to take some statements as well as collect samples from Mr. Jefferson." Max said as she breathed out a heavy sigh before sitting down in one of the chairs. "That means that you, me and Kate are going to have to give our statements as well." Max continued. "What a mess." Max finished.

"Shit." Nathan said as he sat down again.

"Could you stay with him, in case he wakes up?" Max asked as she got up again.

"Where are you going?" Nathan asked in a panicked voice.

"I'm going to wait by the front doors for the police." Max said as she left the classroom.

Once the police arrived with an ambulance in tow, Max showed them to where Mr. Jefferson was and as they entered the classroom, Max saw that Mr. Jefferson had woken up, but he acted very disoriented. Once Mr. Jefferson was looked at he was taken to the hospital, where more tests would be taken.

In the hopes of helping his friend, Nathan just said that he heard a commotion when he stopped to have a chat with Max. And that the two of them went to check it out. But when he saw the disappointed look on Max's face, and the fact that a good mentor had been taken to the hospital, Nathan broke down and told the officer what he knew about the drugging. And who he suspected was behind it. He may not care that much about other students, but ever since Mr. Jefferson started his teaching career at Blackwell, Nathan finally had someone he could turn to without being judged for what sort of family he came from.

When Kate was brought out from her room to be questioned as well, she told the officers that Mr. Jefferson had been working on his laptop while drinking coffee. She'd been in the middle of cleaning and sorting some of the equipment when he had come up behind her and started to touch her and that's when she had asked him to stop and when he didn't, she screamed and moments later Nathan and Max had entered and helped her out.
