Note the idea I'm adding I'm gonna take from the current storyline with Adam and his dad and twisting it in my own version*
After a long day at the hospital, Adam was finally taken back to his room and put back in his hospital bed. The room was dimly lit, with the only light source coming from the hallway. Hank had kept watch over his officer and Ryan while watching Bob. He noticed that Bob was getting more frustrated. As he got closer, he heard Bob muttering.
"Bob, you doing alright?" Hank asked.
The other older man jumped slightly. "Oh Hank, I'm alright, just getting antsy."
"It's getting late; why don't you take Sophia home? You both need some rest; Adam and Ryan will be fine. Nobody won't get near them."
"I'm fine; I'm just waiting on Emma."
Hank had frowned in confusion and concern. "Bob," He said as gently as he could. "Emma passed away. Remember, it was a car accident."
"No, she's finishing a shift. She's a nurse here. I always come to pick her up, so I brought Sophia." He pointed at his granddaughter, who was sitting in the chair.
Now, Hank grew more concerned. "Are you sure you're alright?" He looked at Bob's eyes and pupils to make sure he wasn't drunk or any form of being intoxicated.
"It's nothing. I just remembered my daughter."
"That's more than remembering. Are you sure you're alright?"
The other older man sighed and looked at his granddaughter as she fell asleep in the chair.
"Hank, I don't want you to tell Adam or Sophia. Adam already has enough to deal with, and Sophia won't understand this."
"What is it? You can tell me."
"I've been having some memory problems for a while, and I went to my doctor a while ago before this happened with Adam and Ryan. They found something: I have Alzheimer's."
The older sergeant was utterly stunned. He took a moment to process his reaction and gather his thoughts before speaking again.
"How long?"
"Maybe a month, I think it was right after what happened with Emma. I couldn't lay that on Adam, not after losing Emma. I know he needs to know, but not now, not like this. This needs to come from me, let me tell him. I do have a favor to ask of you, though."
"Anything, Bob, just name it."
"When I'm too far gone, when something happens to me, I need to know my son and granddaughter will be good after I'm gone. I want you to promise me that you'll look after Adam and Sophia. You'll help Adam and Ryan with Sophia. Watch after my son and granddaughter for me; it's all I ask."
Hank had swallowed hard as he heard Bob's pleas as a father and grandfather. He gazed over at Sophia, who was now fast asleep in the chair, and into Adam's room; he had already considered his team his family. Sophia was insistently family when she came into the picture, and no questions were asked.
"I'll watch after them and be there for whatever they need. The entire team will, they will always have a family at the 21st."
"Thank you. I appreciate it."
"No need to thank me; that's what family is for."
"Can you watch Sophia? I wanna go in and see Adam."
"Of course."
Bob entered his son's hospital room, the sterile smell of disinfectant hitting him as he stepped inside. Adam was fast asleep, his face peaceful in slumber. Bob gently took his son's hand, feeling its warmth and fragility.
"I love you, son; I always have and always will. I know you'll do right with Sophia." Bob's voice was soft, and he did not want to wake his son.
Adam slightly stirred. "Dad? What's wrong?"
"Nothing, son, just go back to sleep."
"Where's Sophia?"
"She's with Hank; go back to sleep."
"Are you sure everything is alright, pop?"
"I'm sure, son, just rest."
Adam nodded and returned to sleep while Bob held his son's hand. He knew he couldn't keep this from his son. He needed to tell him, and soon.
