So, my very own HTTYD fanfic. Now, this is a concept that I've always loved about a franchise I've always loved. This is a standard "run away" fic, but I do have some things that'll make this different. Hope you guys enjoy.

First Flight

Hiccup: Leaving….

On the island of Berk, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, 15-year-old viking boy and heir to chieftom walked into Raven's Point; a small alcove deep in the forest. In this cove hid his biggest secret; a dragon. More specifically, a Night Fury he'd shot down.

You heard that right. This fishbone not only shot down the "unholy offspring of ightning and death itself"… but also trained it. He dubbed the massive reptile "Toothless", due to the creature's retractable teeth. Hiccup still remembered the cheers of the Berkians after taking down the Gronkle as he walked through the cove, a large bag slung over his shoulder.

Despite breaking a Viking tradition to kill dragons on sight that had been in place for over 300 years, he had not only learned from Toothless, but befriended him. Because of the newfound knowledge, he exceeded in the class faster than the other teens of his generation and had become the talk of the town.

However, after surpassing his fellow tee and secret crush, Astrid Hofferson, in Dragon Training, Hiccup had been chosen to kill the Montrous Nightmare as his final test. But with his friendship with Toothless… You can probably assume that this wasn't gonna work.

Hiccup: We're leaving. Looks like you and me are going on a little vacation… Forever.

Hiccup knew what he was doing was wrong. After all, he had everything he'd ever wante for the past 10 years; the village liked him, he was an expert at dragon "slaying" and best of all, his father was proud of him. After so many years of mental and emotional abuse, he funally achieved his dream…. But now he couldn't NOT want it more than anything. Not after all he had learned thanks to Toothless.

Stoick was right; Hiccup was many things… But a dragon killer isn't one of them.

Opening his bag as he set it on the ground, Hiccup checked to make sure he had everything he needed.

Hiccup: Aw man….

In the basket he had used to bring fish for Toothless, Hiccup has also stuffed a few more sets of clothes, his bedroll, a few pencils and empty journals, some tools from the forge which he BORROWED, a fishing rod, his old dagger, a bunch of his old drawings of Toothless, and the helmet his father gave him. He was conflicted on whether or not to bring it as it was a part of the tribe he was running from… but then again, it was the remaining piece of his late mother.

Kinda ironic, he had become friends with the very creature that brought her death. With a sigh, Hiccup decided that the sentiment of his mother weighed more than the symbolism of him being a dragon killer, so he stuffed the helmet back into his bag… along with the fact that it's apparently half of her old breastplate.

Hiccup: Well, that's an image I'm gonna be stewing over forever. *calls out* Toothless! Come on, bud, where are-

He's cut off by a loud thud from behind him, causing Hiccup to turn around and spot the Night Fury himself, looking at him with curiosity as he croons. Hiccup gave a small smile as he scratched under Toothless' chin, the dragon responding with a happy growl.

Hiccup: I'm alright, Toothless. Come on, we're leaving.

Toothless cocked his head to the side in confusion. Don't get him wrong, he's always up for a fly, especially out of this cramped as Hel cove, but Hiccup was intent on leaving the very island he called home?

Hiccup: Look, Toothless, I haven't really been… completely honest with you.

The boy let out an exhausted sigh as he leaned against his friend's black scales.

Hiccup: You're the only real friend I've had in years, bud… There was one, but things didn't work out. Not to mention… Not a lot of people back home like me, not even my own father… The real me. Except for Gobber and.. Maybe Gothi- but she's a definite "maybe", she's the elder, so…

Toothless didn't know who those two people were, but he let the boy continue.

Hiccup: I've tried for YEARS to prove I could be one of them, I've wanted to be seen, to belong, for as long as I can remember, bud. I just thought if I tried being a viking my way, t'd work out.. But nothing worked. I'm… I'm done lying, bud. I'm done with being useless, being a… a "hiccup".

Sensing his distress, Toothless rubbed his head against the boy's arm, purring in a soothing manner to comfort him as best as he could. The boy smiled with gratitude as he scratched behind the Night Fury's ear, eliciting a pleasured warle from him.

Hiccup: Thanks, bud. Now, come on, let's get going. We'll find our own place, we'll explore all we want and might even find new dragons. Who knows?... Maybe if we're lucky, we'll find another Night Fury.

Now excited, the dragon let some sort of joyful bark as Hiccup smiles, strapping his bag onto the saddle.

Hiccup: Just you and me, bud! We'll go where we want, when we want!

Hiccup climbed into the saddle and pressed his foot on the pedal, adjusting the prosthetic tailfin he had made for Toothless before the pair took off like a rocket. Not even a minute later, a certain blonde viking peaked into the cove, finding nothing. With a frustrated exhale, she leaves and goes back to town.

In the now pink and purple sky, Hiccup and Toothless start flying away from their shared "prison", a newfound sense of freedom filling Hiccup's heart as he takes a deep breath. However, as they reach the opposite side of the island, he notices a ship, having wrecked on the shore.

Hiccup: Hey, that's not one of ours. Toothless, down. We should check it out.

Toothless proceeded to land on the beach, allowing Hiccup to climb off and saunter towards the wreck. Leaning inside the wrecked ship, he expected to see nothing but sand and wood. But was shocked at what he really found.

Hiccup: I-It's.. It's a girl.

Inside the shipwreck was a girl around his own age. Short and skinny with long, dark hair, it was obvious she wasn't from Berk. Getting slightly concerned, he leans in and shakes her shoulder, which awakes and scares the hell out of her, which he was trying to NOT do.

Hiccup: Hey, hey, it's okay. I'm a friend.

The girl spoke, her voice had a slight rasp due to being unused for some time.

Girl: Do you have any water?

He nods and goes to his basket, grabbing one of his containers of water for her and goes back to hand it to her. She drinks a little bit before handing the container back and speaking, her voice now smoother than before.

Girl: Thank you… Where am I?

Hiccup: Berk. Not exactly the most inviting place, I know

Toothless pushed past Hiccup to see her, causing the girl to gasp in fear.

Hiccup: Hey, it's okay. Don't be afraid. He won't hurt you.

Hiccup helps her out of the wreckage, pushing Toothless back a bit before petting the dragon on the nose. She looks at him in utter shock.

Girl: How… How did you do that?

Hiccup: I earned his trust. It took some doing and some regrettable decisions, but I;m glad I did…. My name's Hiccup, by the way.

Girl: I'm Heather.

Hiccup: I've never seen you around these waters. How did you end up here?

Heather's neutral smile immediately drops at Hiccup's question as she looks to her boots.

Heather: My family and I were on a boat, heading to our island when we were attacked by some other village. They took over the boat and took us back to our island, it was a massacre...I was able to escape. But my mother and father...they weren't so lucky. I think they called themselves the Berserkers.

Hiccup: *surprised* Berserkers? Oswald the Agreeable did that?

Heather: No, it was someone else that led them. I think he said his name was… Dagur.

Hiccup: Dagur the Deranged?!... Yeah, that makes too much sense.

Hiccup remembered the Berserker chief and his son from the few times they came to Berk to sign the peace treaty. Oswald was always a nice man, but Dagur… he was sort of fun, but kinda… unstable, to say the least. Especially since that one time he and Hiccup went swimming and the more muscular boy tried to drown him.

Hiccup: I'm so sorry to hear that. But, what happened to your boat?

Heather: Out at sea, I got caught up in a storm. I got knocked unconscious and when I woke up, you were here.

Hiccup: Oh, yeah, the thunderstorm from some time ago. You've been here ever since? You got nowhere to go? Maybe I can take you back to my village, they can help you.

Heather: Are you sure? It… kinda looks like you were heading somewhere, with that sack you have on your dragon.

Hiccup: Yeah, uh… Thing is… I was kinda...leaving.

Heather: What?! Why would you want to leave?

Hiccup: See, my entire village hunts and kills dragons and as of yesterday… I'm the only one of them to see the truth behind them.

Heather: But why protect him? Everyone's afraid of dragons.

Hiccup: Well… I could tell you, but… maybe it'd be better if I showed you.

At the sound of the offer, Toothless grows angry, narrowing his eyes at the girl.

Heather: I don't think he likes me.

Hiccup: Aw, don't be silly. He's harmless. Here.

After mounting Toothless, he holds his hand out to Heather as she takes it and mounts up behind him.

Hiccup: Toothless, gently. We're trying to get her to like us.

Heather: You named it Toothle-?!

Toothless suddenly took off, scaring the girl as she pretty much screwed her eyes shut in fear. As she's about to beg Hiccup to set her down, she opens her eyes as Toothless takes them high up into the clouds, slowly gliding across the sky. Entranced by the sight, Heather slowly lets go of Hiccup and raises her hands as they fly through the clouds and out into the ocean.

Heather: I… I've never seen anything this beautiful since… ever.

Hiccup: So, was I right?

Heather: *chuckles* Yeah. Yeah, you're right. This is incredible…. *scratches Toothless' side* He's incredible. So, you said you were leaving… where are we headed?

Hiccup: To be honest, we don't really kno. I planned on just roaming- Wait, "we"?

Heather: Well, it's not like I've got anywhere to be. Where else am I gonna go? Besides… I think I want to learn about this dragon riding thing.

Hiccup: Really? Well...If you're gonna stay with us, you're gonna need a dragon. And luckily, I know just the place.

In the dead of night at Berk, Toothless flew towards the town, staying low as possible to not stand out as they make their way to the Kill Ring. Once they arrive, Hiccup sees no one around and sneaks Toothless and Heather in.

Heather: What is this place?

Hiccup: The arena. It's where we do dragon training and… slay them for the final test.

The Night Fuy grows slightly uneasy as Hiccup pets his head, trying to comfort him before going over to one of the gates, pulling the lever to start opening the doors.

Hiccup: This dragon here is one some of the other townsfolk caught a few months ago. Apparently, it's too dangerous for new recruits, but… maybe we can change that.

The gates open, revealing a long and slender silver dragon, a small horn adorned its head, a long ledge on the top of its snout and a short, stumpy one on the bottom, along with a slender, almost metallic tail trailing ebind it.

Heather: What is it?

Hiccup: A Razorwhip. Sharp Class dragon. Long, spiny, barbed tail. Very aggressive. Very dangerous. But maybe that's because they got off on the wrong foot.

Heather stifles a laugh through her worry as the Razorwhip starts coming out slowly towards Hiccup. Toothless watches with suspicion, ready to protect the boy as He holds his hand out and walks back slowly to Heather.

Hiccup: *soothing* It's okay...it's okay.

He then turns to Heather and grabs her hand, helping her keep her palm flat.

Hiccup: Hold your hands out…. Let her come to you.

Primal fear began rising in Heather, but she stood her ground, keeping her hand towards the Razorwhip while looking away in anticipation. However, those feelings faded as the Razorwhip closed its eyes… and gently placed its nose against her hand. Heather looks in amazement and shock, eventually smiling as she begins scratching the dragon's chin.

Heather: Hey there, girl…. You're not so scary now, aren't you?

Hiccup walks away for a few minutes before walking back, handing her a rope.

Hiccup: You're gonna want something to hold onto until I can make a saddle. Trust me, bare back gets uncomfortable after a while.

Heather: So… Now what?

Hiccup: Well, you gained her attention and now you're starting to gain her trust. Right now, you should probably give her a name. Something nice, simple. Something like-

Heather: Windshear.

Hiccup: ….Or that. That works too.

He then helps Heather get atop the newly named Windshear and jumps on Toothless himself.

Hiccup: Just one more thing.

He then goes over to the other gates, pulling the levers to release the Nadder, Terror, Gronckle, Zippleback, AND Monstrous Nightmare in that order.

Hiccup: Come on, you guys! Time for a jailbreak!

All of the dragons, especially the Nightmare, were surprised at Hiccup's proclamation and intention. The large Stoker dragon immediately calmed down before flying out of the arena and away from Berk, not before giving Hccup a sort of "thanks" look. It was followed outby the Zippleback, then the Gronckle, both of them giving him a thankful passing glance. The only ones that stuck around were the Nadder, who preened the boy's hair in gratitude before flying off, and the Terror, perching on Hiccup's shoulder and nuzzling his cheek before darting outside.

Hiccup: Safe travels, you guys.

Heather smiled at the sight of Hiccup feeling relief and accomplishment, watching him mount Toothless once more.

Heather: So, what's the plan?

Hiccup: Now… Let's ride.

After adjusting Toothless' tailfin, both he and Heather flew out of the arena. As they fly off, Hiccup looks back as Berk gets small and further away, almost as if his misery was shrinking bit by bit.

Hiccup: Goodbye, Berk…. Goodbye, Gobber, Gothi, that one sheep that liked me for an hour… Goodbye, Dad.

With a slightly heavy heart, Hiccup lets out a sigh of relief and readjusts the fin as the two dragons fly off into parts unknown, waiting for whatever adventure comes to them.

Although, both Hiccup and Heather were unaware of the 5 dragons that were watching them leave….
