Chapter 10
Spider-Man swung through the city, once more on patrol. Nevertheless he was wary, constantly keeping things on alert, knowing that he would have to rely on his Spider-Sense in order to make sure the Assassin's didn't get to him and catch him off guard.
'They've not made any major moves yet, but…' Spider-Man thought to himself. 'Still gotta be careful, who knows where they're waiting to pounce.'
Once more focusing as he swung through Midtown, Spider-Man was startled out of his thoughts by his phone going off. He activated the call.
"Hello?"
"Spider-Man, good." Came a familiar voice. "I need to talk to you in person."
"Captain, what's up?" Spider-Man queried, a little surprised.
The Police Captain replied. "It'll be easier to talk in person, it concerns those mercenaries you apprehended at the Mayor's Office."
Spider-Man considered for a moment. "Alright then, I'll be right there captain."
They both hung up and Spider-Man changed direction, flipping in mid-air and web-zipping to make the quick turn. He resumed swinging as he headed now for the police station instead. As he made his way there he wondered what the Police Captain wanted from him, what he had to share about the mercenaries, had something come up about whoever hired them, or was it something else.
Arriving at Midtown's police station, Spider-Man swung up and landed on the roof where Police Captain James Anderson stood waiting for him, dressed smartly as was to be expected from the man. He was tall and broad shouldered with short blonde hair; blue eyes and pale skin, a strong build. He was clearly a man who was well-suited to the hardships and physicality of his job. He was also Natalie's father.
'Which means I've got to be careful, not to give away anything given how I do know Natalie after all.' Spidey reflected as he walked up. "Made it as quickly as I could, Captain, what happened?"
Captain Anderson sighed and shook his head. "These mercenaries are tougher than we thought. You took them down easily enough but now we've got them in interrogation and they simply won't respond to any questions we put to them, especially when we ask about their employer."
"So...that means this is very important to them. Must be getting paid a lot." Spidey replied. "I wonder...is there no clue at all?"
"We weren't able to get them to give up anything about their employer but yeah, clearly rich, rich enough to buy silence and they clearly have some sort of connections, given their equipment. It was some top line stuff, if you hadn't dealt with them stealthily they'd have made a real mess of you." Captain Anderson remarked heavily.
Spider-Man nodded. "Can't be many guys like that, I mean...it should narrow things down, right?"
Captain Anderson shrugged and moved to stand at the edge of the roof and lean on the railing as he looked out at the city.
After a pause, Captain Anderson turned back to Spider-Man.
"Now, although the rest are getting locked up as they should be, but one of them, the leader from what I could gather, has been bailed out." He suddenly announced. "He'll be leaving the station soon. I'm worried...but there's nothing left to hold him on now that's he's been bailed out."
Spidey was surprised by this. "Wait, some mercenary group attacks City Hall, gets arrested and one of them is getting out, who would bail a guy like that out?"
The Captain shook his head. "No idea, I'm guessing his employer, but it was all done anonymously."
"Hmmm, well, I'll check things out Captain, make sure the guy doesn't cause any further trouble." Spidey said at last.
"Alright, but remember, we need just cause, don't do anything unless he's actively breaking the law." Captain Anderson warned.
"Got it." Spidey said. "Don't worry Captain, I know what I'm doing."
With that Spidey turned and leapt from the roof and using his webs to move down until he was carefully watching the area around the police station, making sure he didn't miss the mercenary when he left. It took a few minutes but he then saw the man in question leaving the police station and making his way down the street.
'Okay, here we go. Wonder what this guy is up to now?' Spider-Man wondered.
Even as he moved to get into a position to watch the man without being seen, he already got a hint as to what he was up to as he pulled a slip of paper from his pocket and read it carefully.
Spidey continued to watch and then slowly, carefully, follow him, that was until the man moved away from the crowds and approached a phone, away from other people so he couldn't be overheard. Now it was clear what was on the slip of paper, a phone number.
'Gotta listen to that call...Hmmm, let's give my other unique ability a try.' Spider-Man thought to himself.
It was an ability that he knew he'd have to be careful with, it took a lot of concentration to keep it active but he needed it here and so, focusing he turned invisible before swinging down and up as close as possible to the mercenary and began to listen, while doing his best to maintain enough focus for his invisibility.
"Boss, yes, um…" The mercenary said, his voice shaking. "We were…"
The man on the other end spoke, but it was impossible to hear his voice, but it was clear he was chastising the mercenary, likely for being captured by the police.
"Y-yes boss, sorry boss." The mercenary said quickly. "But, the Spider-"
The man flinched as he was no doubt cut off but then, finally things seemed to calm down.
The mercenary cleared his throat. "Yes, of course Mr. Osborn. No further contact, understood, I'll pick up the pay and leave."
With that he hung up and left while Spider-Man turned visible again, shocked at what he'd heard.
'Osborn, Norman Osborn? I should have guess...who else would want to learn the mayor's dirty secrets but his upcoming election opponent. But now, now what do I do?'
It certainly made things tricky for him as he had to wonder what lead to follow first, Osborn or Kingpin.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
