Chapter 26
Reaching the rooftop of the building where he first met Black Cat, Spider-Man spotted her already waiting. Landing he walked over to her.
"What's wrong Cat?" He asked. "You sounded rather tense?"
She turned to him, her expression tight. "I am, Spider...there's trouble."
"Trouble?"
She nodded and gestured to a building, one that they both knew to be abandoned.
That was until her reveal. "That place it not so abandoned anymore, those...Hunters have taken it over."
"Hunters...Kraven's men." Spidey realized, eyes narrowing. "What are they doing there?"
"I'll be honest, I don't know, but I did overhear something about research. But that's not why I called you here." Black Cat explained.
Spider-Man turned to her. "Oh, then why?"
Black Cat sighed. "Laurel...she's in trouble. She's in there."
"What?!" Spidey gasped. "But how, how did they-?"
"They didn't. She crept in herself, I think she's looking for Kraven, looking for revenge." Black Cat revealed with a heavy sigh.
Spider-Man growled. "Oh great...now I've gotta find her, I can't believe this. Why didn't I-?"
He was angry at himself, not Laurel that much was clear.
Black Cat shook her head. "You need to stop dwelling on that, I mean, isn't there something more important right now?"
Spidey nodded, exhaling and clearing his head, he swung in, ready to sneak in and save Laurel.
Finding a way inside and turning invisible, Spider-Man moved carefully through the abandoned building, it had been turned into a base of sorts by the Hunters. He saw them now, patrolling around, all clearly armed and all clearly discussing amongst themselves, mostly curiosity to what Kraven might do next. It concerned Spider-Man, that even Kraven's own men didn't know what he would do next.
'I need to find out what they're doing here, that looks like a good place to start.' He noted.
So Spidey moved over to what looked like a long desk with several documents on it and some strange jars. Dropping down he moved over and paused.
He realized. 'Spiders, lots and lots of spiders in these jars...wait a minute, these are, all like the spider that bit me...all enhanced somehow, not all the same way. What is Kraven doing with these?'
He looked over the documents and found his answer and grimaced.
'So that's it, he stole them from Oscorp labs, where the one that bit me came from...he's researching them, studying them, trying to work out strategies for fighting me.' Spidey noticed. 'Not good, huh, uh oh.'
He quickly zipped up to the ceiling, turning invisible again as he did so, as two of the Hunters stepped up to the area and began looking around the area, part of their patrol it seemed.
But then he heard it. "Any sign of the intruder?"
"No, but we'll find her, crazy girl, what was she thinking coming in here?"
That made Spider-Man tense, Laurel was in here, he needed to find her quickly.
Laurel bit her lip as she remained hidden, she cursed herself for her stupidity, she didn't know what she was thinking. She had been so furious, determined, wanting revenge against that monster Kraven. So when she realized his men were stationed here, she was determined to find him, or at least learn what she could about him, so she could get her revenge. But now she was trapped, trapped in this unexpected location with all those men prowling around.
'Dammit, now what?' She thought to herself.
She cursed herself, she should have known better, but she had just been so blinded by anger. She took a look around, still ducking behind her hiding spot.
'Gotta figure something out…' She thought to herself. 'Maybe find a way out of here, but I don't see one, dammit. Urg, this place it creepy, all these spiders around…?'
She moved quietly along behind her hiding spot, ready to try and find fresh cover, especially as two of those men were prowling nearby, getting a little too close for comfort. She covered her mouth with her hand to stifle her breathing, trying desperately to avoid them hearing it. She moved her other hand along the desk, feeling something strange, then a sharp pain in her hand which she gave a muffled gasp in reaction too.
"What the?"
"Did you hear that?"
She tensed, looking down at her hand and was shocked to see one of those spiders dropping to the floor, it had bitten her. The footsteps drew her attention back to the matter at hand and looked up to see the Hunters standing over the desk, they had found her. But before they could say anything, they both were yanked up into the air and were soon suspended from the rafters by webs, out cold. Then Spider-Man materialised out of thin air in front of her.
"C'mon, we've gotta get you outta here." He said quickly but quietly.
She grimaced, but nodded and let him take her out of the building to safety.
Dejected and broken, Laurel was silent as Spider-Man carried her home, swinging through the streets, finally landing nearby.
"Okay, you should be safe now, I can't believe you-"
She cut him off. "Don't try to lecture me, you didn't show up to save my dad, to save my friend...they're dead because you failed."
"You think I don't know that!" Spider-Man remarked, surprisingly sharp. "But you throwing yourself into danger like that isn't going to help anyone, least of all you!"
"Oh like you have a right to talk-"
"I happen to have my powers which means I can handle myself against guys like that!" Spider-Man countered. "But you...how is going and getting yourself likely killed going to help anything?"
That hit home, not helping was the strange feelings of dizziness Laurel was falling into.
"I...I...Sorry." She said at last. "I should get home, I need, I need to lie down."
Spider-Man nodded. "I'm sorry too, I wish I could have done more."
She swallowed but said nothing and simply headed into her house, Spidey watching her go until he was sure she was safe and then swung away.
