Chapter 11

It was yet another day, Spider-Man swung through the streets. He was getting fed up with the apprehension and worries being caused by the Assassins, they were most certainly hunting him by now. But weren't striking yet, which made him think he was dealing with them planning something, some sort of ambush or such. But that wasn't the only thing that was playing on his mind.

'Three days, it's been three days since it started, since Sam set off my Spider-Sense. Why, I don't get it...how could Sam of all people?' Spidey wondered worriedly. 'He's a nice guy, he wouldn't be dangerous, surely? Unless…?'

That was when an unpleasant thought occurred to him. He began to get worried, especially considering that he couldn't deny it anymore, he was sure now he had developed a crush on Sam. But that wasn't something he was sure he could act on.

'I mean, I'm Spider-Man, the danger involved...it's bad enough with him putting himself at risk to take pictures of me fighting the supervillains. If it came about that we were, if he knew the truth...the danger it'd put him in.' Spidey reflected sadly.

But then he was distracted from that when he finally saw Sam walking down below. He thought back to his recent meetings with Sam, over the past three days and his Spider-Sense going off. He decided right then that he was going to try and find out why.

So, determined to get to the bottom of things, he swung down a little lower and took the turn that Sam had taken. It did not take him long to spot him and soon he began to follow him, staying out of sight, using more mundane methods than his invisibility however, due to not wanting to divide his concentration. Finally there came a point where Sam stopped and Spidey took cover on a ledge up above, hidden by an alcove as he looked down carefully.

'What are you up to Sam?' Spidey wondered. 'Has something happened, someone got to you, forcing you to do something, is that what I'm sensing...are you IN danger, and not the danger I'm sensing?'

He couldn't place it, but they were a little out of the way, partly down an alleyway, but still well within sight. It was a usual short cut that Sam would take to get home, but he didn't usually stop here. As Spider-Man watched he took note of Sam pulling out his phone and seemingly making a call. Spidey was tempted to get closer, but things didn't look like they'd work. He'd have to use his invisibility trick again but then he'd have to find some way to resume following Sam without cover until he could find some and turn visible again. But then, something happened that Spider-Man did not expect.

It was surprisingly something simple, his phone going off. He hissed but luckily he was too far away to be heard and so he quickly answered it, noting the caller ID.

"Laurel, what's up?" He asked, trying to sound casual.

Laurel was sounding rather frantic. "Jamie, thank God, I'm worried, I really need to talk, to ask you something."

Spider-Man grimaced, glancing over the ledge at Sam who was still down below and chatting on his phone.

"Well, alright, I've got a moment, what is it?" He asked, trying to sound casual.

"It's just...these past few days have been so…" Laurel began. "I'm just going to ask, have you noticed anything odd about Sam...and Jennifer for that matter, they've both been acting odd lately."

Spider-Man sighed as he considered, of course other people would have noticed things like that. He was just as stumped as Laurel was about Sam's behaviour, it was why he was following him right now after all. But while he knew the truth about Jennifer's behaviour, her reasons, but couldn't exactly share them.

Taking a deep breath, Spider-Man sighed. "Okay listen, I'm kinda worried too, especially about Sam, but I'm sure there's a good explanation for this, we'll figure things out and they'll be fine. I know Jennifer is acting strange but trust me, I'm sure she'll be okay and as for Sam. I'm gonna try and find a way to talk to him, see if I can get answers. We've both been kinda busy, but I'm gonna make sure of it, I'll make time."

"I...okay, I guess you're right." Laurel said. "Thanks Jamie, I just needed to talk. So, um…"

Before anything else could happen, Spider-Man was startled by the sudden sounds of his phone again, while he was still on his call.

"Ah, sorry, gotta go, someone else is calling." He said.

Laurel replied just as quickly. "Ah okay, thanks, take care."

With that he quickly ended the call.

He answered the other call, noting the caller ID again.

"Jen-"

"It's Black Cat, Spider." She said quickly, sounding panicked which startled him. "I tried your tactic of laying low and it hasn't worked.

"Wait, what is going on?" Spidey asked worriedly.

Black Cat replied at once. "I got ambushed, the drive is gone and...it's Hammerhead, he's here and-!"

"Cat...Cat!?" Spidey tried to get an answer but she'd been cut off.

Spidey grimaced and shook his head as he looked down to see Sam was already walking away and almost out of sight.

"Dammit." He muttered.

He had no other choice, the second assassin had made his move. Leaving his tail of Sam, Spider-Man swung away and headed to Black Cat's location, tracing it down quickly, hurrying to her rescue.
