"Can we please slow down?"
Otto glanced back at Rio Morales, eyes narrowed as he tried so VERY hard not to snap at the woman. They had managed to get out of the hospital well enough but getting through the streets of Nueva York was a different matter entirely. It seemed that everyone had gone insane with the attack and no one was thinking straight, much to Otto's annoyance. There were citizens that were panicking, Spiders that couldn't decide who to fight (themselves or the invaders), more Skrulls than he ever wished to deal with, and he was pretty sure he'd seen a baby raccoon with a Symbiote run by one of the alleys they'd taken to hiding in.
"We are trying to get you and your son to safety," he informed the woman, keeping his tone as calm as possible. "You must keep up."
"I can keep up just fine," Rio snapped, causing Otto to blink in surprise. "But you need to let us know what the plan is in case one of the tontos balanceándose crashes down and causes us to become separated. Where are we going exactly? What do we do when we get there? Is there a place we can safely regroup."
"…I must admit I am impressed," Otto commented, waving for the group to follow him. They ducked into a subway entrance which turned out to have been a rather lucky move as only moments after Jefferson had gotten down the steps there was a boom and a bus slammed down, blocking their way. "Well… I suppose this will do for now."
"You doing okay, son?" Jefferson said, shifting little May (Otto refused to call her 'Mayday' as that was just insulting to her namesake May Parker, a good and kind woman). The little girl had thankfully decided to go to sleep and thus hadn't been bothered that much at all by their rapid escape. "Maybe you should sit down…"
"Dad, I'm fine!" Miles complained. "I don't need you to coddle me."
"I'm not coddling you," Jefferson stated. "I just-"
"I'm good! More than good! Great. Okay, maybe not great because I did get hurt fighting Miguel-"
"He nearly killed you," Rio snapped before spouting off some Spanish that was so salty Otto had the urge to cover the little one's ears. "Dios mios, Miles, you were in a hospital bed not 20 minutes ago…"
"I. Am. Fine." Miles threw his hands up in the air. "See, this is why I didn't want to tell you I was Spider-Man!"
"Oh, and don't think we've forgotten about you not mentioning that little tidbit," Jefferson said sternly. "We are going to have a LONG conversation about that."
"You'll have time, considering you are grounded," Rio added.
"What!?" Miles exclaimed. "You can't ground me!"
"Does getting hit by a Spider Bomb or whatever gave you these powers suddenly mean you don't have parents?"
"No but according to Miguel that usually ends up as a result…" Miles winced when he saw how UNPLEASED his parents were after that little comment. "Listen-"
"Miles, a word?" Otto said, motioning for the teen to come over to him. "In private?" Jefferson and Rio didn't look pleased by that but finally nodded their heads, allowing Miles and Otto to have some privacy.
"Listen, I never got a chance to thank you for all you've done," Miles said.
Otto smirked at that, though his mask hid his face. "It was a simple matter to fix the damage. You must excuse the doctors that run that hospital… they do not have the time nor the skill to deal with such problems like I do." His smile fell though as he spoke his next words. "You're parents are worried about you."
"I get that but-"
Otto cut him off. "My father… he was a drunk. He hated that I was smarter than him… no. No, he hated me, Miles, and he used my intelligence as an excuse to hate me. Had I been dumb he would have hated me. Had I been merely stronger. Had I possessed the looks of a model. It didn't matter. He hated me. He hated me because he was a hateful man, Miles. You are right about Spiders and their parents, Miles. Nearly all of us end up suffering loss. I do not believe it is a 'canon event' but I do know this: I would give up every invention I had ever created and start all over again with a box of scraps to have parents that loved me as yours do."
Miles swallowed at that and gave a choppy nod.
'Good,' Otto thought to himself. 'Maybe there is hope for him.'
As they moved back to join Rio and Jefferson Miles looked over at Otto. "I kind of figured as much from you helping to spring us out of this mess but… not a fan of canon events?"
"I am not a fan of faulty research. And it is clear to me that Miguel O'Hara has done just that."
"What do you mean?" Miles asked.
"Have you ever heard about twins who were separated by birth who ended up going into similar professions? Marrying similar women? Maybe even naming their children similar names?" Miles nodded. "It is impressive, isn't it? You hear about such situations and it makes you wonder about the connection that twins have. Does the fact that they were once one being who split into two mean they hold a psychic connection? Or that spending 9 months together completely together mean that they are linked, even if they are separated?
"It becomes less impressive when you realize that for every set of twins who have these strange connections there are nine that hold no such strange links." Otto shook his head. "That is the problem with what Miguel has done… he has done research and clearly only focused on those worlds that support his theories, ignoring the ones that do not."
It was Jefferson who spoke. "I've run into detectives like that. They are sure it has to be this one suspect purely because of what neighborhood they live in or that they are black. Doesn't matter they have an alibi… they have to be guilty."
"Exactly," Otto stated. "And O'Hara refuses to allow others such as myself to look over his research. Demands that we just 'trust him'." Otto scowled at that. "I am a scientist… if I can not show my work so others can replicate it than what I have created does not matter in the slightest."
"Now who got Otto going on a science rant?" Night-Spider asked, dropping down from above them, causing Miles, Rio, and Jefferson to all start. "Unless you want to be bored to tears I suggest we get moving right now, before he can begin talking about peer reviews and scientific journals."
Otto didn't give her the satisfaction of reacting negatively to her little comments. The fact that Felicia knew all about peer reviews and such proved yet again that the former cat burglar was far smarter than she let on.
"Will we be able to get out the way you did?" Otto asked.
"Oh yes. Even this big one…" Felicia looked over at Jefferson before frowning. "Oh. You're a cop."
"How did you know that?"
"I can smell it on you. Makes me want to run really really fast." She smirked as she began to walk away from him, glancing over her shoulder as she put a bit of extra swing in her hips. "Or convince you to let me get away…"
"Watch it, bruja," Rio snapped. "He might let you get away but at some point, and I know it will happen because I know your type, you are going to mess up and need someone to look over a broken rib or a sprained ankle. And I am going to be there… and I will make sure it hurts."
Night-Spider stared at Rio for a long moment and Otto awaited her to make some smart little quip… only for her to merely nod.
'Interesting,' Otto thought to himself before deciding to table that bit of information for later. "What is going on up there currently? We know that Spider-Chaos and his Avengers are attacking the Society…"
"And doing it well," Night-Spider stated. "They've locked down all communication… even if Miguel had allies he could call upon they aren't going to know what is going on till the battle is done. Spider-Chaos also didn't just bring his Avengers… nearly every hero from his Earth has shown up."
"Miguel certainly is good at making friends," Miles muttered.
"Why aren't we waiting for them to finish up the fight?" Jefferson asked. "From the sounds of it this Spider-Chaos-"
"And that is a terrible name," Miles joked.
"-is against Miguel, just like us."
"Just because one is against your enemy-" Hunter-Spider said from an emergency exit, "-does not mean they are your friend."
"So we shouldn't trust you," Rio commented.
Hunter-Spider smirked at that. "I like this one. She is smart." He moved out of the way and began to walk with them down the employee hallway and Otto wasn't that terribly surprised that he shifted to walk next to Rio, ignoring her husband. Kraven had a type, after all. "We have no idea what Spider-Chaos desires. He claims that it is vengeance for what happened to his children but where does he draw the line? Just the Society members that side with Miguel? All of us?" And if that was the case then Otto was going to be a target; even if he had been only working with the Society to learn their secrets he still had been a member and Spider-Chaos didn't seem like a man willing to hear a potential foe out. "Any other Spider? Until you know the make of a man you can not trust him."
"We don't know anything about you," Jefferson pointed out.
"Good. Do not trust me. That makes you smart. Use me until you wish not to."
"…okay then," Jefferson said and Otto felt a smidge of pity for the man, as it was clear he was well out of his depths. "So, we said we should all know the plan…"
"I have an office," Otto stated. "At the tower the Spider Society uses as their headquarters. There I have an interdimensial doorway we can use to reach my Earth. Once there we will be able to determine if it is safe for you to return home."
"I have to return home," Miles said quickly. "The Spot is growing stronger and he's going to come looking for me."
"I'm sorry but… the Spot?" Rio asked. "Who is The Spot?"
Otto was wondering that too. It was the first time he had heard of such a person.
'Such a pathetic name,' he thought derisively… only to catch himself. He was thinking like a Spider… something he had to always be careful with. He didn't know why it was but there were times that he found himself focusing on the wrong things and he had to quietly remind himself that he wasn't merely a Spider… he was Otto Octavius. 'He may not have chosen the name. I was stuck with the childish 'Doc Ock' moniker thanks to Peter and Jameson. And even if he chose it himself that doesn't mean he isn't a threat. A name isn't everything, after all.'
Miles began to speak and proved that Otto was wise to hold his opinion. "He was a scientist for Alchemax-"
Otto, Night-Spider, and Hunter-Spider all stutter stepped at that.
"I'm guessing that's not good…" Miles said. "I mean, I know it isn't great because they work for the Kingpin but-"
"In all universes Alchemax is bad news," Night-Spider stated.
"Did you tell Miguel about them?" Otto asked.
"I… I don't know. I can't remember… everything was kind of happening fast…"
"It doesn't matter… he hates them but he also holds an unusual loyalty to them." Otto shook his head, realizing that he would have to give a bit more information to keep the others focused. "Alchemax is the reason Miguel gained his abilities. He worked for them, as a scientist, and they ruined his life when he refused to continue on."
"Don't make me feel sympathy for that bastard," Rio muttered.
Otto shook his head. "He knew they were doing illegal things… it is only because he for once got his own hands dirty that made him change his mind."
"Well The Spot was with them the entire way," Miles stated. "During my battle with the Kingpin-" Jefferson groaned at that and Otto knew there was a story there, "he was bombarded by… something, honestly I got kind of confused when he told his origin story. But the point is he became The Spot. He's able to create holes that he can teleport through or teleport other through. And he's determined to destroy everything I care for." Miles looked over at his father. "Miguel said you die during an attack against him."
"Not happening," Jefferson said sternly.
"No… its not," Miles agreed.
"And the best way you can prevent that is staying away," Kraven stated. "All of you."
"But I have to fight him! He already nearly destroyed Pav's universe-"
Otto held up his hand. "You are sure? It was The Spot that caused that universe to begin to come undo?"
"I mean… pretty sure." Miles rubbed the back of his head. "He was attacking Alchemax on that Earth because he wanted to absorb the energy of… something…"
"Something?" Night-Spider said dismissively.
"My baby just had brain damage a few minutes ago," Rio snarled, stepping in front of Felicia. "Watch your tone unless you want to see what its like."
At once Felicia threw up her hands in surrender.
"I had brain damage?" Miles asked.
"Among other things," Otto commented, rubbing his chin. "This Spot can easily travel across the multiverse… did he show any signs of glitching?"
"…no, not that I remember," Miles said. "Though with him he's kind of hard to tell."
"Then perhaps the way he got his powers is similar to how Spider-Chaos did. He also shows no affects to glitching…" Otto trailed off as pieces began to lock into place.
"Otto," Night-Spider said slowly, "what is rumbling around in that brain of yours?"
"Spider-Chaos was bitten by a temporal radiated spider, which not only gave him his powers but made him immune to the changes of time travel. There are some who believe that time travel is merely slipped into alternate dimensions and that when we change history we are merely leaping from one reality to another. Just as our every action causes a new reality to form. Which makes more sense than time simply being malleable."
"Why not?" Night-Spider asked.
"Because its arrogant to think that we are the sole 'current' moment and the past and the future aren't?" Jefferson said.
Everyone turned and stared at him.
"What? I love Bill and Ted, okay?"
Otto considered the man for a long moment. "The greatest film showing how time travel actually works." That got a nod of approval from the officer and right there Otto decided that when he returned to his reality he'd find his Miles Morales' family… it would be interesting to have a protégée…
"So if 'time travel' is merely slipping between dimensions why could the Spot not also achieve it? Fold reality so that he is appearing before he came into being in your reality. Cause the destruction we have seen in other universes that O'Hara has claimed is a result of 'canon events'."
"Assuming that it wasn't just freak accidents either," Miles said. "The man gave off serious 'We never landed on the moon' vibes to me."
Hunter-Spider cut Otto off before he could say a word. "We will deal with this at a later hour. We must get these ones to safety… and then decide how the hunt will go."
"The hunt needs to be for the Spot!" Miles declared, growing upset that they were trying to remove him from danger (the follies of youth). "I don't care about Miguel… he doesn't matter."
"He nearly killed you," Rio argued.
"But he didn't and the Spot wants to kill everyone else. He is our priority, not that roided up vampire.
'Find my Miles. Give him every opportunity. Be like an uncle to him.' More and more Otto was becoming impressed with Miles Morales, the first Spider he'd met that had SOME sense in his head when it came to the larger picture. 'And if there is no Miles on my Earth perhaps bring this one there… Jefferson head of my security or perhaps installed as Police Commissioner… Rio could help in the medical division…'
"For now we must focus on our first step," Otto declared firmly. "Which is removing ourselves from this danger-"
His comm went off.
"Otto," Weaver said, "we have a problem."
"We have several," Otto admitted. "Is this new or merely a developing old one?"
"…its hard to say? How does a mob of Spider-Men flying flags with Miles Morales' face on them calling for the death of Miguel and the capture of the Society sound?"
Otto blinked.
"Well…"
He trailed off.
"Otto?"
