Chapter 8

Divergent Perspective: Morality

"Good to see you here."

"Make this quick. I'm assuming we're just picking up the delivery as usual?"

"Yes, but there is a slight problem. The vole's been captured by vermin."

"Of course, because why would things go right? So, what does that mean for us?"

"Not much. 'Tis simply a minor setback. Nothing more. However, it does mean we may have to be more careful with our activities. After all, he may be watching."

"You can say his name, it's not like we will summon him just by talking. Besides, if nothing happened by now, I doubt Martin is actually going to do something. Seasons, all of you annoy me, sometimes."

"Now, that isn't a nice way to act to your superior."

"Superior my tail. If you are my superior, then I'm the ruler of Mossflower. Just tell me if there is anything else we need to do tonight, otherwise I'm going to bed after this. We might get caught if we're here for too long."

"Alright. Say, before we get to that, isn't there somebody missing?"

"Yes. I don't know where she is, and I'm going to let her know how I feel about her bailing on us later."

"'Tis a shame. Hopefully, she's still doing her job."

"She is. I've seen her around. The question is, will she keep doing it when she realises what we're doing here?"

"I don't see why she would stop. We are simply doing what needs to be done."

"You can't honestly believe that, can you?"

"I do, but I assume you see things differently?"

"Obviously. Is the delivery here yet?"

"Let's see… Yes, it seems like it. We should hurry. That vermin and her two accomplices like to stay up at night, and I don't want to have to deal with them. Speaking of which, did you hear Father Abbot's decision to let Marley stay? I can't believe he's letting somebeast that dangerous remain here. What do you think about it?"

"I don't care, everyone's been talking about it all day, I've heard all I need to know already. Quite frankly, I think you are all being paranoid, but it's none of my business regardless, so I will stay quiet."

"Hm."

"What's with that look? Did you expect me to be up in arms about it? How about I spell it out for you more clearly: I hate you and everyone else here. Do you think I would care if something happened with that mouse? Why do you think I'm helping you in the first place?"

"That is a good question, because, nobeast who truly hates Redwall Abbey would help me with this. This is for the greater good."

"Greater good, huh? This place is sick. You're sick. I don't think of this as my home like many of you do. I can't fathom how you somehow think you're doing this for the greater good when if anybeast found out what we were doing, we would be banished immediately. I don't care because I don't abide by the abbey's rules, but you should. You were raised here and are knowingly going against everything they taught you. Please tell me how you-"

"Maybe we should cease the conversation here. You clearly don't understand and never will. That is fine as long as you are helping us make this abbey a better place. However, I will warn you, with that attitude of yours, you are gone the moment you cross us."

"You must be a moron if you think I would be threatened by you of all beasts, but I just want to get this over with, so fine, my life is clearly in your paws. Now, shut up and let's do our job."
