Sloane was completely right. There was no exaggeration to her words.
All hell had officially broken loose.
Now, now, perhaps I'm getting a bit ahead of myself. Oh, wait, I forgot to timestamp this!
This is Agent Jones of the Imagined Order, recording this not only for prosperities sake, but also because I don't want to put this into writing. You see, the Island has gone through it. It all started off by a visitor to the Island who we've named 'The Visitor'. Great, right? Well, he went ahead and built a rocket, and with this rocket he ripped open the seams of reality, which is already a problem within itself, but it seems to have brought a few things with it. For starters, Moisty Mire. It was a fine swamp, y'know? Was. We've now got our very first desert there, for those who really want the beach with no water. Oh, and let's not forget the very first ship of Vikings! Very bloodthirsty, very dangerous.
Now what have we done to help with all of this? Well, our main priority is closing the large, gaping rift above our heads. But we also want to avoid detection, sooo we've sent up some of our enforcers. Those guys are the best of the best, won't take no for an answer and if you try to retaliate, you'll end up in the concrete. Not that we want that to happen, of course. They're also trained in stealth, so that should hopefully work in our favor. Their secondary job is rifting back all the items that were taken from Reality Zero-us.
Oh yeah, let's check the rest of some of those rifted in items! They're from all different realities across the omniverse, so there's plenty of variety. We've got the Viking ship, a horses' carriage, our very first golf course, a Durr burg- A Durr Burger? But that's an Island original. The Enforcers must already have started their work. Pulling up the live feed of it now. Ohhhh, it didn't come alone. Seems like the Island has a new visitor. I would alert Sloane, but to be honest, she'd probably punch me in the face to vent her anger towards everything right now. If all goes well, the Enforcers can bring everything back to the Island and we can shut that rift down for good. If not, let's not even think about that.
End Recording.
"What in the hell…."
Beneath his fingers he felt grass, and the temperature had changed to a sudden coolness. Within a second he sat himself up on the ground, and the first thing in front of his eyes was the giant burger.
"AHHH!"
Which then promptly made him slam right back onto his back. Somehow, he wasn't in the desert anymore. He slowly raised himself up again and decided to look around. To his right was a giant lake with a house in the middle, and that was all he needed to see to decide to sit with his back on the burger. He didn't know how, but Drift was a long way from California.
"Listen, maybe, just maybe, if I fall asleep, then I'll wake up and this'll all have been a bad dream. Right? Yeah, just a bad dream…"
If one thing was certain, it was that this made a much better napping spot than anywhere in the desert would have.
It had been a long few months for Brite.
After the attack on Tilted Towers, she had stayed secluded for a while. Her best friend, the Skull Trooper, had been shot right next to her, which she didn't even know was possible. After that, the council of Heroes formed and brought everyone a bit of hope, even more so when they shattered the asteroid. Then, just as things were getting slightly better, Omega made his appearance. The hope that the Council of Heroes had brought to the Island was snuffed out in an instant as Tilted, the jewel of the Island, rose up in flames. And then if THAT wasn't bad enough, then there had to be a *ing rocket that decided to fly up into the sky, give everyone a heart attack as it made a nose dive towards the Island, and then decided to leave a big hole in the sky, which then caused all the hippies to start yelling about the end of days.
Not that they were entirely wrong, mind you. At least that was the opinion Brite held.
Now, it had been at least a week since the sky ripped open, and now there was rumors of axe wielding maniacs terrorizing people everywhere, and things just…blipping away. The local (and only) motel of the Island had its sign simply disappear from existence, and the head of the famous Durr Burger restaurant had also taken its leave. So, as Brite lay in her bed, she found no reason to even want to step foot outside. Not for the next decade. No, make that century.
KNOCK KNOCK*
Ignore it. It's probably the hippies going door to door.
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*
They've been getting really persistent lately.
RING*
There goes the doorbell! Will there ever be some quiet! As she buried her head into her pillow.
"If you don't come out here right now we're just gonna have to drag you out!"
"What the f-"
"SHHH! Watch your language!"
To Brite, there was really no other acceptable reaction. Outside her window was Rex, the star from the Island's first hit movie, still in his complete dinosaur costume. The only problem was that Brite's bedroom was on the second floor. So right now, Rex was balancing on top of a tree branch, outside her window, at 2 in the afternoon. And of course she hadn't closed her window. The one time she had actually wanted some fresh air.
"And what if I say no?"
"Then that'd be really disappointing."
"Or what if I just gave you a little shove?" Brite said as she walked towards the window.
"Well, I think my prop tail could break the fall."
"Care to test that theory?"
"I'd rather not. Besides, we've got something awesome to show you. The whole Island knows what you've been though, so we decided to give you a little gift!"
"Who's we?"
The moment she asked, she regretted her question, because from down below came "Heya Britey!"
Cuddle Team Leader. Her home was now surrounded by the animal kingdom.
"Listen, if we're being completely honest, I'd rather waste away in my house where I have the comfort of peace and quiet, and myself and I to keep me company. That's my answer."
"But-"
"My final answer!" As she slammed the window down.
She could hear faint noises coming from outside. She'd specifically picked the house that had the best soundproofing insulation. That was why she was shocked when she heard the sound of an engine burst through.
She ran downstairs to the door and opened it up to be met with the sight of…she wasn't even sure. It had four seats, a steering wheel, and an overhead roof, but it was unlike any car design that she'd ever seen. Whatever it was, it broke through her grouchy demeanor, if only for a minute.
"..Where did you find this?" she finally asked.
"Well, Cuddle over there actually found it first. She was taking a look at the new area up north, and the place was chock full of them! They're great for driving anywhere on the Island, so now we don't have to walk!"
"And you say this can go anywhere?"
"Anywhere except the water. We already tried that, and we haven't been able to get that cart out of the lake since."
The way Brite saw it at the moment, was she could keep staying in her house, wasting away out of fear from the outside, orrrr she could put up with Cuddle and Rex for a while in order to be part of the world again, if only to be able to drive the machine.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a blue flash of light coming from the hillsides to the east. All of a sudden her thoughts suddenly went into panic mode, but she was able to calm herself slightly. Rex and Cuddle held no such emotion, instead seeming excited about it.
"Did you see that?!"
"Yeah I saw it! We've gotta check it out!" Rex looked back at Brite. "You coming? That'll be out first stop!"
Well, today fear wasn't going to win. "Count me in. I'm driving."
"But you don't eve-"
Cuddle was cut off before she could finish her sentence as Brite climbed into the driver's seat. "I'm sure I'll manage."
There were quite a few buttons and levers in front of her, and to be honest, Brite wasn't sure what to do. But she had already put on her façade, so she had to see it through. On the ground there were two pedals, which seemed pretty important.
"So if I just press on this-" she was interrupted by the machine suddenly starting and flying forward, right into her mailbox. Maybe she wasn't cut out for it just yet. "On second thought..."
Five minutes later, Brite Bomber was sitting in the passenger seat as Cuddle Team Leader drove. From Brite's house, the hill where the blue flash originated was too far away to be seen, but as they got closer, she could just make out what looked like a giant boulder.
"What do you see!?" Rex yelled from the back.
"Hard to say!" Cuddle yelled back. "We're going up the hill now!"
"I don't believe it", Brite said as they reached the top of the hill, because right in front of them was the missing Durr Burger head from the restaurant at Greasy Grove. Except now there was something different about it, because on the tongue of the head was a big emblem of something that Brite had never seen before.
"What's that on it's tongue?" Rex asked.
"Whatever it is, there's nothing like it on the island." Brite said as she walked over to the burger, slightly cautious about it.
"It looks just like you Rex!" Cuddle yelled from the vehicle.
"Shaddup!"
Meanwhile, Brite was taking a closer look at the tongue. It was strange, really. It looked to be a visage of some sort of animal, but since the Island didn't have any wildlife it made it impossible to compare it to anything. The only references to creatures were in images and books, and the image in front of her bore on resemblance to any.
snore*
What the hell? There was a noise coming from the other side of the burger. Slowly, Brite stepped away from the image and peeked her head around the side of the mascot head, and lo and behold, there was a man sound asleep. Well, nothing to worry about there, except for the fact that she had never seen him around before. He was wearing a sleeveless T-shirt with long, black pants, and a mask covering the lower half of his face. The hairstyle was also interesting, as it was one long, tall strip down the center of his head. Well, the Island had newcomers all the time, so he must be one of em'. She turned around to alert the other two-
And they were still going at each other, insult after insult. Best not to get caught in the middle of the crossfire. She looked back at the man leaning on the burger, took out her pickaxe which she carried at all times (it made home renovation really easy), and tapped him on his shoulder. With that poke, the man started to stir.
"Hey, mom, I don't have school this morning…"
He dozed right off again. She was about to poke him again when she noticed something he said: 'mom'. What was a 'mom'? Well, one more question to ask later. She poked again, and this time he actually opened his eyes.
"I said I can sleep in…can't IIII..." His words trailed off as he opened his eyes fully, and then with a jerk he suddenly straightened himself upright. "Oh shit. Oh, oh, oh no. It wasn't a dream", he said as he placed his hands on his head, clearly in a panic. Now might not be the best time to interrupt. "No, no no. What type'a Doctor Strange shit is this?! It's not a dream."
Doctor Strange. Another question for later.
The man started to look around from his sitting position, and from here he'd be able to see Loot Lake and everything that lies beyond. But what Brite failed to consider was the fact that he would turn around fully and see her standing there, pickaxe in hand, which is exactly what happened as she stood there watching him.
"Ahhh!" Came a synchronized yell, as the man saw here and she yelled in response to that. Clearly this wasn't the best look. A woman with a pointy weapon was standing right next to him, and in response he fell to his side and started to inch away. He didn't seem to notice that he was right on the edge of a cliff, and if he were to move any more, he'd surely fall.
"Listen, I don't know who you are, or what you want, but stay away! I don't want any trouble!" He was barely able to speak those words, it seemed. His voice was cracking in so many places due to the panic. Most times whenever Brite had greeted someone new, there was never a response like this, but he was different. He was scared, which no one ever really was. Not to this extent. It would probably be best to put down the pickaxe, try to create a sense of ease.
"Alright, listen, you don't have to worry. I'm just going to set this down here. See?"
With one hand she set the pickaxe down, and the other she held up as a sign of peace. "I don't want to hurt you. I don't even know you!"
He appeared to regain some of his composure. "Where am I? What is this place?"
"Take my hand and you can find out" Brite said as she reached out her hand.
It took him a minute, as he went over the options in his head. Either he goes with this weirdly dressed woman and lives, or he backs up an inch more and falls. He chose the former, and reached out his and grabbed hers.
"Welcome to the Island. There's a lot to explain, but I'm sure you'll get it in no time. Now what should I call you?" Brite had done this many times before, with all sorts of newcomers.
"…Call me Drift. Where is this? The Caribbean? The Bahamas? Hopefully Hawaii."
"I'm gonna be honest, none of those words make sense. Listen, you can call me Brite. Over there are my friends Rex and Cuddle. We can go over there now, or you can take as much time as you need."
"Listen, it's nice to meet you." He was getting at ease. Good. "I have a few questions though, before anything. You're saying you've never heard of Hawaii? OR any of the other places I just named?"
"Those were places? All due respect, I deal with people that first arrive to the Island. Sometimes they'll start to ramble on and on about their supposed personality, but never about a place. There is no other place besides the Island, and you obviously haven't been here before."
"What do you mean there's no other places? There's a whole world out there! North America, South America, Asia, Europe, assuming you've heard of those places."
"Nope." This was definitely an interesting case.
He stopped for a second, deep in thought. His concentration was broken by the banter of Cuddle and Rex, oblivious to the new guy near them. That's when he looked up and asked "Is that…a golf cart?"
"A what cart?"
"That rules out the possibility of an uncontacted tribe. You guys have machines. He's wearing a dinosaur costume, she's wearing a pink bear outfit, and you have a unicorn on your shirt. You have things from the outside world, but you don't know anything about it. Am I in a different universe? No, that's too crazy. There's got to be a logical explanation."
He was more so talking to himself at this point. But she had taken her shirt and looked at it, holding it up so she could see. Was that what that thing was?
"This," she said, pointing at the ripped T-shirt that she wore over her spandex bodysuit. "you said this was a unicorn?"
"A very strange rendition of one, yeah. It's got a different creature for a head, but the horn is what makes it a unicorn. You don't know any of this?"
"You just sound like you've gone crazy."
He ran a hand through his hair. "Maybe I have, maybe I have. Last thing I remember was painting that-" as he pointed at the tongue of the burger-"and then I suddenly ended up he-"
"I'm going to stop you right there. Did you say you remember?"
"Remember what? The desert? The graffiti?"
"No!-Yes!-No, what I meant was, you remember before you get here. Before the Island."
"…Yeah. I can give you my whole life story if you want. Not that you'd understand any of it."
Holy shit. There was really no other way to describe what Brite was feeling right now. This just changed everything. The nonsense he was spewing before, it wasn't nonsense, at least she thought. He remembered before. No one remembers before. Before their arrival, that is. This man, this Drift, just changed everything. But wait, she had to play it cool. Play it calmly. This was the most important man on the island right now, and the last thing she needed to do was scare him away. She'd get all the juicy details out of him later. For now, though..
"You can tell it later. I don't want to overwhelm you, so I'll just take you to meet my friends."
"Are you sure? They look..busy." The argument had only amplified, with Cuddle standing on the inside of the cart and Rex yelling at her about the map he held in his hands. Brite looked up at Drift's face, and he wore an expression of not quite fear, but definite nervousness.
"Listen, it'll be fine. Just walk with me and with any luck, they'll act civilized." She said as she draped her arm around his shoulder as he slowly stumbled forward.
"And I said we should go to the pool, but noooo, you're too afraid of get-hey, wait! Brite's back! With a guy!"
"This isn't over," she whispered through her teeth, still sounding menacing despite the fuzzy mask over her head. She threw up her hand to wave to the new guy, and Rex did the same. "Hey there! Should we make room for one more?"
"How about it? We can talk more on the way." Brite spoke to Drift, who was more unsettled by the sudden change in attitude by the two in front of him.
"Might as well."
