AN: So, I just want to apologize to both ZeroSensei and ShadowFlex. First, ZeroSensei, I apologize for no doing the proper research I needed to do. Second, ShadowFlex, I should have pm'd you about me adapting "your" story before I started. I hope both of you will forgive me, although I understand if you won't.

If one were to imagine purgatory, they would most likely imagine a world of despair. A world without color, hope, or joy. That's not entirely right, though.

Purgatory is a dimension ruled by the God of Death, yes, but that does not mean it is full of despair.

It's actually a peaceful place, quiet, but alive. If one were to listen closely, one could hear the singing of angels in their attempts to comfort the God of Death in his slumber.

However, their attempts are in vain.

No one could possibly comfort this being, one who had been around for millennia. He had seen much and had done much. As such, he was left only with regret. Regret of having failed his comrades, regret of having failed his subordinates, and regret of having failed his people.

And now, he slumbers, seated upon one of the few things he still had from old. A crystal throne, jet black and tall enough to pierce the heavens. His only other reminder of the past was the golden staff floating next to him.

It was a staff that had obviously not been made by any mortal methods, it was far too intricate for even the dwarves to have made it. It was depicting seven serpents coiling around the base of it, and each of the serpents mouths was holding a different colored gem at its peak. These two things were his only keepsakes of times long since gone, and he treasures them more than anything.

If one were to be standing in the same room as him during this state, they would immediately be overwhelmed by the aura of despair radiating from him. He is a being who knows sadness like no other, and even while asleep, his mind is filled with his past mistakes, constantly reliving what he regretted most.

But, as any other thing has a finite lifespan, so too does his sleep. Soon, the time will come when he will need to traverse the mortal realm once again, bringing nothing but death in his wake.
