Interlude: First Poker Night.
The sun had just dipped below the horizon as Xander and his siblings got everything together for poker night in Yukikaze's mansion. Xander had just finished putting the finishing touches on the summoning sigil for his remaining poker buddies. It was just a simple pentacle with an X in the center, but it worked well enough. He gave his handiwork a final once over before he gave it a nod of satisfaction and went back inside to see how everything else was being set up. He found a makeshift bar had been set up which was basically just a long table covered in all manner of drinks one could think of. On the other end of the table were all manner of snacks. For humans, anyway. Much to his surprise, while he had been outside painting the summoning sigil, Asagi and Sakura had both shown up and were helping with preparations. They were in casual clothes instead of their ninja armor.
"Showing up here twice in one day unannounced. I'm starting to feel popular." Xander told the two Taimanin.
"Let's just say we have our methods and leave it at that, Xander." Asagi said, giving him a half hearted smile ,before asking, "How does everything look?"
Xander gave the room a once over. There were snacks, there was booze, but there was just one crucial thing missing, "Looks good, now all we need is a poker table. Preferably a round one."
"We've got you covered, Xander," Kotaro called, coming into the Yukikaze Estate carrying a round table leg on his shoulder. with Tokiko carrying the other end.
"Where the heck did you guys find this? It looks like somebody had refurbished an old ship wheel." Because that's exactly what it looked like, only the space in between the spokes was now covered in green felt.
"Pawn shop." Kotaro replied succinctly.
Xander, not one to look a gift horse in the mouth and appreciating craftsmanship when he saw it, nodded. "All right, cool. Just place it in between those chairs over there." he motioned to a setting of chairs in the middle of the room.
Asagi cleared her throat before she asked, "So, how many people typically show up for poker night, Xander?"
Rubbing his nonexistent beard, Xander happily replied, "Typically, it's just me and three to four other people, but that's just counting the regulars. Every now and then, we get the oddball who shows up, thinking they can pull a fast one and swindle us, only for the rest of us to be all too happy to clean the poor sap out of their chips."
"Do you think we'd be allowed to play?" Kotaro asked.
Shaking his head and making a negative noise in his throat. "Nope, you don't have anything of value they'd want. Not just anybody can join this poker game. You gotta have something of value to put up to play."
"Then how'd you get in in the first place?"
"Remember when I said I dusted my best friend Jesse?" When everybody nodded, Xander continued. "Well, I just so happened to have the poker cue that I used to dust his vampire, and it was coated in the dust. That was something of value to them. Which got me into the game. That was the second time I played."
"What was the first?"
"The first time was when Little Diamond showed up to play for his best friend's soul after he lost it to us trying to win the heart of a damn girl," A regal if dark sounding tone of voice replied.
Everyone looked towards the entrance to the backyard, where a man in a black transcoat, red fedora and yellow aviators stood. He had long dark hair and was grinning like a wolf.
Walking forward, Xander embraced the tall man before pulling back and saying. "Hey Al. How've you been since last poker night?"
Waving his hand about flippantly, Al replied, "Oh you know, the boss keeps me on a short leash. I can't even buy the occasional bit of candy with an 'I' before she bursts a blood vessel. How about you, little Diamond? I didn't expect to find you in Gosha of all places. Seems like you've been moving up in the world. Seems like only yesterday we were playing poker in a warehouse and now here we are at an estate of all things."
"Xander…" Slowly, barely daring to breathe, Asagi asked, "Is that Alucard? As in Dracula, The No Life King?"
"Yeah, I just call him Al. It's shorter and easier for me to remember. Al, I'm pretty sure you've at least heard of Asagi, right?"
"Oh yes, my son Edwin can't decide whether he loves or hates her." The No Life King replied, giving her a full fanged smile. "Ashanti, Mademoiselle." Alucard's gaze flickered around the room to the Taimanin, who were standing as still as statues. When his eyes alighted on Yukikaze, they froze still for a minute. "And who is this delectable little treat?"
"That would be our Hostess for tonight, Al. Her name is Yukikaze, and if you even think of sticking your fangs in her, I'm going to stick my gun down your throat." Xander told him with a hint of warning in his tone.
Alucard held up his hands defensively, "Relax, my dear Renfield, remember we're under peace pact here. Hence the point of the sigil in the first place. it cannot be drawn with malicious intent in mind. It can only be placed down if one truly means for the area in question to be a place of peace and well-intentioned gatherings. Or in our case, poker night."
The hunter just rolled his remaining eye and replied, "Yeah, yeah, just keep your dark humored jokes to yourself. They're already on edge with just you being here. You prefer red wine if I recall correctly?"
"I'd love a glass, thank you. Am I the first to arrive?"
"You're fashionably early for a change. Which is good, because I wanted to tell you about a mission I recently went on."
"Oh, do tell." Alucard said, clearly intrigued, as he looked at the young man from over his yellow aviator spectacles.
"Had to go down to Yomihara. One of our slayers got captured and sold as uh meat, to one of the brothels down there."
The No Life King grinned, showing a few more fangs than what would be considered as acceptable, "Is that right? I trust my son didn't give you any trouble. If he did, I'm going to have to take an enthusiastic walk down there and give him a spanking."
Xander shook his head as he replied, "No, no, Edward didn't even know we were there. But I would like you to spread the word next time you're down there that Slayers are off limits. Or else."
Alucard tipped his hat and nodded as Xander handed him a glass of red wine, "I'll make sure the message gets passed around, Little Diamond. You have my word."
"Appreciate that, Al."
"Don't tell me the party's already started without me?" another voice piped up that practically oozed sex appeal from every syllable she spoke moments before she floated through the back door.
She had a body with more curves than a backroad, With long emerald green hair and bat wings where ears should be on a human being. She was wearing a pink spandex suit that had a fur trim. And she floated immediately over to Xander and put him in a sensual embrace. "Miss me, darling?" She all but purred into his ear.
"Hello Morrigan, how have you been? And where's Lilith?"
Suddenly, from out of nowhere, a miniaturized version of the very woman who was clinging to him popped out of her and clung to Xander's back. The only major difference was her smaller breast size and lilac purple hair.
"Surprise! Did you miss me as much as you did Morrigan?"
Xander, as if expecting this to happen, just rolled his eye, and said In slight exasperation, "Hello, Lilith… and yes, I missed you too."
"Xander," Yukikaze said in clipped, chipper tones, "Who are these two, and why are they being so clingy?"
Morrigan glanced between him and Yukikaze before whispering in his ear, "Somebody's been playing the field. Good for you, dear. You were a terrible mess after you lost Anya."
Clearing his throat, mainly to cover up his sputtering from Morrigan's whispered words of comfort, Xander made introductions, "Everyone, this is Morrigan Aensland and her little sister Lilith. She is the umm… currently not so missing heir to the throne of Makai.
Everyone's jaws dropped when they heard that, "She's the missing heir to the throne of the Underworld! Why hasn't she taken the throne?" Asagi couldn't help but ask.
Crossing her arms under her bountiful chest and pouting slightly, Morrigan replied petulantly, "I don't wanna. You know, heavy is the crown and all that. Too heavy for me. Thank you very much."
Sakura smacked her cheeks just to make sure she wasn't dreaming, "You've got to be kidding me. You're refusing to take up the crown in Makai and causing mass chaos down there simply because you don't want the job?"
"Well, I am a Succubus, darling. I think there are other things I'd like to be doing with my time, rather than diplomacy and paperwork."
"You mean like sucking di-" Sakura was cut off by an abrupt elbow, and harsh glare from her older sister.
"Well, not just anyone," Morrigan replied, giving Xander a salacious grin as she did. "I have standards, you know?"
'I'm going to kill this bitch if she keeps this up!' Yukikaze thought to herself, the occasional electric spark shooting off of her body.
'I can hear your thoughts, you know?' Morrigan's thoughts suddenly invaded her mind. 'Succubus, remember? Do you think I really care if Xander has sex with other women? I'm a Succubus, Little girl.'
'So what, he's just nourishment to you then? A five course meal?'
'Perish the thought,' Morrigan promptly fired back. 'His Soul is worth its weight in gold and diamonds. He is a crusader in all but name. He is a diamond in the rough. Hence his nickname by Alucard. He hasn't told you anything, has he? Oh, this is going to be so much fun.'
"Morrigan, stop teasing Yukikaze," Xander said with a bit of force in his tone.
"As you say, master." Morrigan, all but purred, Before she and Lilith held him tighter.
"I've told you numerous times not to call me that." Xander replied flatly.
"But why not? You do own our soul, meaning you're our master and by all rights, you are the king of Makai. We would simply be ruling it in your stead. Should you give the order in any case." Morrigan was quick to remind her liege lord.
Running a hand down his face, Xander complained, "Please stop reminding me of all this political crap. Where the hell are Astaroth and D'Hoffryn? I'd like to start playing cards at some point tonight."
When you say 'where the hell' do you mean in what hell in particular, or as in where are they?" Alucard asked with a shit eating grin on his face.
"Just for that bad joke, Al, I'm going to take all your chips tonight." Xander promised him.
The No Life King frowned, "Oh come on now, Little Diamond. It wasn't that bad of a joke, was it? You're going to leave me at least some of my chips, right?... Right?"
"Well, clearly Alucard has said something stupid if Xander has him sweating already." A Regal demure voice replied as Astaroth, one of the ladies of the Underworld, garbed all in one beautiful red dress, stepped through the back door of the Yukikaze estate. She was smoking from a cigarette holder, the cig on the end was already lit and cherry red.
Xander sent her a jolly wave, "Hey Az, how's work been?"
"Same as usual," The Hell Lord said through a puff of smoke. "Wonton violence here, an uprising there, the occasional burning to death of a minion. But enough about work. How are you darling? You're keeping yourself busy, I see." She idly noted as she glanced at the Tiamanin in the room. "Don't tell me that blasted fool D'Hoffryn is late? Hmph! Let me guess, he's trying to think up another harebrained scheme to cheat you out of your chips, Xander."
Xander sighed and nodded, "Probably. He's had it out for me ever since Anya… But, well, let's be honest, he's had it out for me ever since I left her at the altar. But that's neither here nor there. You guys just want to play a three man round waiting for him to show up?"
"Actually, I've been meaning to give one of your winnings to you for a little while now, Little Diamond." Alucard said with a knowing grin on his face.
"You don't owe me any winnings, Al." Xander said, thinking back to all the games they've played over the years.
"Ah, but you're forgetting the first bet you ever made with us." The No Life King reminded him. "You bet your soul for your friends. But his soul wasn't up to snuff for yours, so we had to bet other things to even out the pot. And I bet my next sired minion,"
"I bet my soul," Morrigan said, causing Lilith to hug Xander tighter.
"I made you immune to the effects of hellfire," Astaroth reminded him.
"And good old D'Hoffyren made you immune to the effects of any reality altering wishes made by his "justice demons"." Alucard finished for him using air quotes around Justice Demons.
Xander shook his head in pity, "So you're telling me you've sired a childe of all things? That poor bastard. Having to deal with you,"
"Hey, I'm not that bad…" The room was silent. Frowning petulantly, Alucard called, "Police Girl! Get in here and tell Little Diamond that I'm not that bad!"
"Coming, Master." A cockney accented voice replied, Moments before a sandy blonde haired woman with a rack rivaling any he'd ever seen yet walked into the room. She had crimson red eyes, fangs in her mouth, And she was wearing a khaki soldier uniform. Probably had the world's biggest rifle being held over one arm.
"So dis is him den, The guy you're pawning me off on?" She asked, her accents in full swing as she looked Xander up and down. "I don't git it, he don't look all that special."
"Xander, Seras Victoria. Seras Victoria, Xander." Alucard said, making introductions.
The two just stared at each other a moment before Xander broke the ice, "So is this as weird for you as it is for me?"
"Too damn roight it is." She said with a nod of her head, "I ain't even used to this vampire shite yet, Now I'm being pawned off on you. Loike I'm secondhand or summin'."
Giving her once over, Xander said. I certainly wouldn't call you second hand. Underdeveloped, maybe, but not second hand."
Hands going to her chest, Seras said, "Underdeveloped? Me?"
"Not what I meant. I mean as a vampire. The edge vampires have. It's as if you're still… clinging to your humanity."
"Astute as ever, Little Diamond," Alucard praised, "You've correctly deduced that my little Seras here hasn't had her vampiric cherry popped yet,"
Xander did a double take before asking, "I'm sorry, what?"
Stomping on her Sire's foot and crushing it, Seras replied, "What Master means to say is I haven't drank human blood yet, thus my transformation into a Draculina is currently incomplete."
"Ah, so in that sense you are a virgin," Xander said, nodding and understanding.
Looking away and coughing into her hand, Seras replied, "Yeah, totally just in that sense."
'She's a total virgin!' Everyone else in the room was thinking at that moment. The Taimanin, Rinko and Yukikaze in-particular were the most sympathetic. They too had been through some nasty experiences but had managed to not be defiled thanks to Xander at least. Asagi and Sakura too felt their hearts going out to the young vampire. She probably had little choice in the matter as Alucard wasn't known for asking before he turned someone and yet she seemed well adjusted and in full control of her faculties so perhaps he had mellowed out a bit in the past few centuries?
"So… Seras, do you know how to play poker?" Xander asked.
"A bit yeah." she nodded nervously.
Xander nodded that was a start at least. He continued, "Ever play Texas hold'em?"
"A couple a' times yeah." She nodded again. "We playin' then?"
Xander nodded, "Yep, you can take Hoffyrn's seat till he shows up, m'kay?"
"Alroight, sounds good. Deal me in!" Seras said as she sat down.

The group was three games in by the time D'Hoffryn deigned to make his appearance. The Father of Vengeance Demons watched impassively as the river was shown and scowled in annoyance when the boy collected chips from the others. As per usual, he was ahead. 'Not this time though, tonight I have a plan.' D'Hoffryn thought to himself as the deck was shuffled for another game.
"Room for one more?" D'Hoffryn asked after clearing his throat to make his presence known to the rest of the group.
"'Bout time you showed up, D'Hoffryn," Xander quipped without even turning around in his seat. "What sort of hairbrained scheme did you come up with to get back at me this time?"
"You'll just have to wait and see won't you, boy," The demon sneered in contempt at the back of Xanders head, before saying, "Deal me in, and whose the blonde?"
"Seras Victoria, my new Draculina." Xander introduced as he passed cards around the table. "She even still has that new vampire smell."
"Oi, you sayin' I stink er wot?" Seras asked, giving her new master a dower glare.
Xander shook his head. "Nothing of the sort, Seras. I guess it was just a joke in bad taste on my part. Forgive me?"
"Fine, but only 'cause you're cute for a Yank, yeah?" Seras said after a moment. Before hiding her face behind her cards.
"Thanks Seras, and as far as Vampires I've met go, you're the cutest and the most sane."
Flicking her crimson eyes to his sole remaining brown, she replied confusedly, "Thanks… I think?"
"Trust me, compared to the likes of Drusilla and Harmony, that's a compliment," flicking a glance D'Hoffyrn's way, Xander said, "Now that you're here, we can start playing for real."
"Oh, have something in mind, do you?" D'Hoffyrn mused. This was all going in his favor tonight.
The sole human among them nodded, "Yeah, If I win this next hand. You call off your vendetta against me, and…" He paused looking around for a moment before his eye landed on Kotaro's. "And you have to unlock his Ninja Art."
"Xander, you don't have to…" Kotaro began, only for D'Hoffryn to speak over him,
"And when I win, both your soul and his will belong to me."
"Deal." Xander said calmly.
"Xander," Asagi said worriedly, "You just bet your soul and Kotaro's, are you sure you can win?"
"Xan-kun will be just fine," Yukikaze said confidently. "We just need to have faith in him."
"Thanks Yuki. I always do better when under pressure," Xander said as he looked at his cards before doing the flop and flipping over the first three cards.
The Eight, Nine, and Ten of Clubs were revealed.
Morrigan and Alucard folded, leaving Xander, Seras, and D'Hoffryn. Xander threw a couple hundred chips in the pot, causing Seras to fold, and D'Hoffryn mimicked his actions. The Turn card was the Jack of Clubs, causing Xander to throw even more chips into the pot. Again D'Hoffryn mimicked him. "Last chance to back out, D'Hoffryn,"
"Deal the River, boy, " D'Hoffryn sneered in contempt. "I can't wait to see how far I can stretch your soul till it breaks."
Xander did so, revealing the Queen of Clubs. He then laid down his cards, The Seven and Ace of Clubs. "Aces High Straight Flush."
D'Hoffryn dropped his cards in shock, revealing a pair of aces. "But… But how, I?"
"Tried to use magic to cheat?" Alucard finished for him, grinning far too widely and showing far too many fangs. "D'Hoffryn, did you forget that you made Little Diamond immune to your brand of reality warping magic during the first game he ever won against us?"
"I… of course I haven't forgotten but that shouldn't… it shouldn't affect me!" The demon sputtered in shock.
Alucard shrugged, "And why not? Your vengeance demons get their powers from you, so why wouldn't he be immune to your powers too? But in any case, since you've been caught cheating, I think you need to pay a penalty, don't you agree Astaroth?"
The Lord of the Underworld nodded curtly, "Quite, we all agreed long ago not to use our powers during these games and you broke the golden rule! So, since our Dearest Little Diamond beat you fair and square, he should get to decide what to do with you."
Everyone looked at the one-eyed Hunter expectantly, until folding his hands in front of him on the table, he finally spoke, "I'm not going to do anything, because the worst thing I can do is have you live with the shame of knowing, even when you cheated you couldn't beat me. And, remember what we bet on D'Hoffryn? You have to leave me alone from now on. Also, be a dear and unlock Kotaro's Ninja Art, would you?"
"You may be fine with letting him stew in his folly Little Diamond, but Astaroth and I are not," Alucard piped up, while the Underworld Lord silently nodded next to him. "As a penalty, you're going to unlock Little Diamond's Ninja Art too, D'Hoffryn."
"Actually, I was going to bet that on the next game," Xander admitted.
Alucard's eyes gleamed in mirth, "Oh, had this all planned out in advance, did you little Diamond?"
Xander simply nodded, "Yep."
"And what pray tell where you going to bet to have ole D'Hoffryn unlock your ninja Art? Besides your own soul of course?" Astaroth asked bemused.
"Yukikaze's soul. Ouch." He said when he was repeatedly kicked in the shin by the Pettanko Taimanin. "Yuki, it's not like I was going to lose! Calm down!"
"You can't be sure, you know?! What if you did lose? Huh? Then our souls could belong to… to… well not us!" She said as she was winding up to kick him again.
"Yuki, do you remember when I said there was a way for you to stay and watch?" Xander reminded her, seeing her nod, he continued, "Well, here's the rub, the person who puts down the sigil can bet the souls of anyone inside it once it's laid down. It also acts as a deterrent for physical or magical violence of any kind."
"Wait, so we got turned into extra poker chips because we wanted to stick around?!" Yukikaze asked, blanching along with all the other Taimanin present.
"Well, I tried to find someplace out of the way and quiet to play with the guys… no offense ladies."
"None taken," Astaroth, Lilith, Morrigan, and Seras said at the same time.
"Wait, you mean either of you could'a bet my soul at any time then?" Seras asked pointing between Alucard and Xander respectively.
"Yes," Both human and vampire replied at the same time before sharing a look.
Cracking his neck, Xander continued, "In any case, what's done is done and now, all I have to do is not lose," He looked at Astaroth Alucard, D'Hoffryn, and Morrigan, "So are we all ready to continue?" He asked while moving the deck towards Morrigan. "It's your turn to deal."
(...)
As the night wore on the Taimanin watched the game with rapt attention. Their lives were on the line now after all. Yet Xander sat at the table, cool as a cucumber, and played hand after hand. And he kept making crazier and crazier bets against their souls. He ended up winning the next round with Yukikaze's soul at stake, in the round after that, he bet Asagi's soul against the missing Confederate Gold. And Sakura's for the treasure of Oak Island. He won each and every hand where someone else's soul was on the line. When he was just playing for chips, it was a coinflip on whether he would win or lose, but if he bet his soul or someone else's, he always made sure to come out on top. By the time the grey twilight of dawn was starting to come around, the group was playing their last hand of the night.
"Anyone got anything good to bet?" Xander asked.
"Oh, I know, I have some juicy intel on Edward Black that could be of interest to the Taimanin," Astaroth said smirking, "But it'll cost you,"
"You want my soul and who else's?"
Astaroth laughed, "Oh dear boy, I don't want your soul… at the moment anyway. No, I want something else, just a bit of your time. In particular, one night. A night on the town if you'd be willing to give it? Hmm, what do you say?" She offered batting her eyelashes at him playfully.
Xander took a breath, "Sure Astaroth, I don't mind. As long as you don't try to kill, eat, or kidnap me back to the Underworld by the time the night is over."
"I wouldn't dream of it dear," Astaroth denied waving a hand, "I just… would like to get to know you better outside of these little monthly get-togethers of ours."
Xander shrugged, "I mean that's fine, but you didn't have to offer me info on Al's kid for that. Not that I won't take it, especially if he's up to something that could put innocent people in danger."
Astaroth reached over the table and pinched Xander's cheek, "You really are far too noble. Going out of your way to help people you hardly know," She sighed, "But that's what one should come to expect from a Templar to be, I suppose," She grinned, "I'll tell you what, you win this next hand, and I'll throw in the ability to conjure and use hellfire as well, agreed?"
"I mean… sure? Being able to cause explosions whenever I want sounds like every boy's dream." Xander said with a giddy grin on his face.
The flop was a trio of kings, Clubs, Diamonds, and Hearts.
The Turn was the Ten of Diamonds.
And the River was the Eight of Clubs.
Xander showed his hand when all was said and done, He had the Queen and King of Diamonds giving him a straight.
Astaroth revealed her hand, showing she had the King and Queen of Clubs along with the Ace of Hearts. Three of a kind.
"It's my win." Xander said with a small grin on his face.
"It is, yet I don't feel like I've lost at all," Astaroth replied with a content smile all her own. "Well, the sun is starting to rise, meaning we should pack it in for the night." Glancing at Asagi, she said curtly, "I shall have the information on Black delivered to your office promptly," To Xander she continued, "I look forward to our date, Alexander dear, and I shall send Wesker over to teach you the basics of hellfire in a couple of days." She leaned over the table and kissed Xander on the cheek. "Till next we meet, Little Diamond." She then turned on her heel and made for the exit only to stop and glancing behind her, she remarked, "Oh, and D'Hoffryn? Don't even think about trying to weasel your way out of granting Xander's wishes, or you'll be facing more than the basic penalty next we meet. I do hope I've made myself clear?"
"Crystal." D'Hoffryn said with distaste.
"Good," Astaroth said with a clipped nod before she left the estate and teleported back to the Underworld from whence she came.
Alucard rose next. "I should be going as well, the last thing I need is Integra breathing down my neck, and she's going to be quite miffed when she finds out I 'lost' Seras in a poker game."
"Wait, you mean you didn't tell her you promised your next sired Childe to someone?" Xander asked, from all the stories Alucard had told of the woman, she was something of a hardass. It was funny that he'd never met her in person considering whenever he lost to Al at poker he became the man's Renfield.
"Slipped my mind," the No Life King said with a shrug, "I'm sure she'll only expend one or two clips of ammunition on me once I tell her," Turning to Seras, he said, "Behave yourself, Seras. No drinking Little Diamond's blood or turning him. He might just kill you if you try that." Suddenly snapping his white gloved fingers, Alucard said, "That reminds me, you might need this." He exited out the back only to come back in with a coffin. "Seras' bed for lack of a better term. A coffin filled with dirt from her homeland of jolly ole England. Till she bites the bullet and drinks blood, she'll need to sleep in this to prevent degradation. Where do you want it?" He posed this question to Yukikaze.
"Ano, she can share my room with me I suppose, it's not like she's going to take up a lot of space." The tanned Taimanin said after a moment.
Alucard disappeared into Yukikaze's bedroom and let out an impressive whistle as he came back out, "Nice setup in there."
"Thanks?" Yukikaze replied, unsure how to take a compliment from the father of Edward Black of all people.
"Don't mention it. I was and am still a father. You know my son. Maybe at some point you will meet my daughter. She takes after her mother more." mused Alucard.
That shocked everyone in the room including Xander who didn't know ol Al had a daughter. They knew about his son but a daughter? Even Seras perked up wondering what her former master's daughter was like.
"So where are we holding poker night next? I gotta plan ahead, you know. Killing demons, slaying vampires, surviving. You know regular stuff." asked Xander, causing a few of the Taimanin to laugh at his statement while those of the demonic heritage just nodded in agreement.
"It will be at my place this time. Just remember to be on your best manners. I am all for a good walk and such but the ball and chain Integra will skin you alive if you so much as damage her house. The less said about the butler and what he will do the better," laughed Alucard as he walked to the portal array and disappeared in a ray of blood red light.
