One night it was quiet in the ED at Chicago Med, just as Will Halstead was about to sit for a break he was called for a patient.

"Dr. Halstead! You're up!" Maggie called.

He rushed over. "Talk to me what do we got"

"11 year old female, she was hit by a bike messenger. Possible broken arm and concussion" The paramedic said.

When Will looked at the young girl, she looked familiar but couldn't place it. The young girl had long brown hair similar to Will's brother, Jay. She had sparkling ocean blue eyes. She had some of Will's facial features.

"Can you tell me your name, sweetheart" Will says to the girl.

"Emilia. Emmy" The girl replied with a whimper.

"Emmy, I'm Dr. Halstead. Where are your parents?"

Before she could answer she looked at him. "Halstead? You probably know my dad"

"Who's your dad?"

"His name is Pat Halstead"

Will froze, it was like time had stopped. What had she just said? Pat was her father? Which meant she was his and Jay's sister. What the hell was going on?

The older Halstead gave the nurse, Doris a couple orders for tests and to have Emmy sent for X rays on her arm. After that was finished he went out to Maggie.

"Mags, I can't treat Emmy," He told the nurse.

She frowned. "What's going on Will?"

"Emmy told her her father is my father, Pat. Apparently Jay and I have a little sister we never knew about"

"What?"

"She looks no older than 11. We haven't seen our father in years. When she comes back, page me so I can talk to her. I'll try and see if she'll tell me anything about her mother. Probably knowing my father he landed himself back in prison"

"What are you gonna do?"

"I gotta call Jay and tell him. He hates being blind sided"

"I'll have Ethan treat her"

"Thanks Mags"

"Not a problem"

Will had gone into the lounge and called his brother.

-Halstead. Jay answered.

-Jay, it's me. We gotta talk. Will replied.

-No kidding, my team busted dad.

-Do I wanna know?

-Not now. But what's up?

-You gotta get to Med.

That had concerned the younger man. -Are you ok man?

-I'm fine, can you get here as fast as you can?

-I'm close by. I'll be there in 10 minutes.

Will hung up and waited for his brother. Soon Emmy came back to the room, she did have a broken arm in deed and a concussion. Ethan was giving her something for the pain. The doctor was coming down to cast her arm.

"How is she?" Will asked his colleague.

"She'll be ok. Broken arm and concussion" Ethan answered.

"Mind if I talk to her for a few minutes"

"Sure"

Ethan stepped out. Will sat beside the young girl. He was stunned, she was his twin minus the hair and eyes. She was a mini version of him and Jay. Her hair was Jay's color just a bit longer. Her ocean blue eyes sparkled.

"Are you ok?" Emmy asked smiling.

"I'm ok" Will gave her a smile. "You look like me and Jay"

"Who's Jay?"

"He's my brother"

"Does that mean I have 2 brothers?"

"Let's talk about that. You said you're father is Pat Halstead"

"Yeah. He's really hard and strict. And extremely stubborn"

"That is very true. I know that first hand. When you were brought in you were hit by a bike messenger. Where were you going?"

"Dad called and said to find you or someone named Jay. He said he has to go away for awhile. You guys will take care of me"

"Where's your mom?"

The eleven year old looked down. "She left when I was five"

"I'm sorry"

"Not your fault"

"I called Jay down for you two to meet. Did dad leave anything for me or Jay to look over about you?"

"I think he left something in a trunk under his bed"

"I'll have Jay go check once he's here"

"What's gonna happen to me? Where am I gonna go?"

"If things check out, you can come home with me or Jay"

"R-Really?"

"Of course. We don't turn our back on family"

"Thank you"

"You're welcome"

He had grabbed her cup and told her he was getting her some more ice water. Secretly he was gonna take a small sample of her DNA and run it to be sure. He had swabbed where she drank from it. He then took a small sample from himself and sent them to the lab. He had asked the techs to put a rush on it.

After a bit Jay had arrived to see his brother coming back to the ED. He walked over.

"What's the big emergency?" Jay asked his brother.

"Did dad ever mention another kid to you?" Will answered in response.

"A what?"

"A kid. Ya know small human"

"I know what a kid is. He's never said anything to me. Why?"

"A young girl came in earlier, she's about 11 or so. She said our dad, is also her dad"

Jay's face dropped. Was his brother saying...they had a little sister? Will saw the look.

"That's what I was thinking too"

"Do we have a sister?"

"I think we do. I took a sample from a plastic cup she was drinking off of and I took a swab from myself. The lab is working on it. Hopeful I'll get the results tomorrow. She said dad kept a trunk or something under his bed he had some stuff on her"

"I'll go check it out. What's..What's her name?"

"Emilia. She goes by Emmy"

"Where is she?"

Will escorted his brother to the young girl's room, Emmy was getting her arm casted. The older Halstead knocked. The doctor and Emmy looked. The doctor was finishing up and put the sling on Emmy then left.

Emmy looked to see the two men. When she saw Jay she felt shy and nervous.

"Emmy, this is my brother Jay. He's a detective for the Chicago Police department" Will says to her.

"Hi Emmy" Jay spoke with a smile.

"Hi," The young girl replied with a shy smile.

They went in and Jay sat next to her. "Will tells me that Pat Halstead is you're dad"

"Yeah. He told me if anything ever happened to him. Find Will and Jay. That's what happened dad went out he called sounding panicked he told me to get out of the house and find one of you guys. He said I could find Will at Chicago Med, I could find Jay at District 21"

"Did he say why he wanted you out the house?"

"He said something about being busted by the cops for something. I didn't know what he was talking about"

"Do you know if he ever did anything while you lived with him? Anything bad?"

Looking down she shook her head. "If I say, I'll get in trouble"

"I promise you won't. I just wanna help you"

"Whenever dad would have friends over, he made me stay in my room. One night, I got hungry and went into the kitchen for a snack. They were messing with stuff that looked like powder. They sniffed it. Dad caught me and dragged me back to my room and whipped me. Told me to forget what I saw, said if I told he'd go to jail and I'd end up in the system".

"We aren't gonna let that happen"

"You can't make promises you can't keep"

"We keep our promises. About the trunk you told Will about. You said dad kept it under his bed"

"Yeah. He says it has all my papers and stuff. I think a letter for you guys"

"I'll go check it out. You stay here with Will"

"I'll be here"

Jay excused himself and left the young detective had gone to his father's house. He unlocked the door with the spare key they had. The house hadn't changed except the yard was littered with girl's toys. He walked in and for a moment it was as if he walked into the past.

His father hadn't changed the house one bit, old pictures were on the walls. Everything was still the exact same way. The walls were old. Their father's chair across from the tv, a small table next to the chair.

Slowly Jay had walked up the stairs taking in his past and childhood, everything was coming back to him in a rush. He sees that Will's old room hasn't even been touched in years and neither has his. A room next to his was painted purple and blue, he walked over. It was clear the room was definitely made for an 11 year-old-girl.

The walls were purple and blue, there was a twin size bed in the middle and it had a blue and purple bed set on it. On the walls were some pictures. A couple were of Emmy and Pat, one was a picture of Emmy and her mother before she left. The others were of Emmy and her friends. There were soccer trophies on a bookcase, other ribbons and awards were hanging on the bookcase.

Jay left the room and went to his father's room, he opened the door and started searching. He looked under the bed and found the trunk Emmy mentioned. He pulled it out and broke the lock. He searched through it and found some papers, one was a birth certificate. It was Emmy's. The father listed was Pat Halstead, the mother, Fiona Kyle. She was born October 31, 2009.

That year, Jay was overseas on his final tour and Will was in New York. When Jay had returned home he hadn't bothered to contact his father. He still had a feeling his father still drank heavily. And most likely still doing drugs. Pat had started using after his wife died.

He had blamed his sons for her death, she was terminally ill with cancer and one night when she had gone to bed, she never woke up. Both Will and Jay were with her that night. Shortly after they buried her Pat began using and taking his anger out on both his sons to the point they both left and didn't look back. Jay had joined the Army. Will had gone to New York.

Eventually when both brothers returned to Chicago they still hadn't contacted their father. They didn't wanna put up with his problems. Jay had continued searching and found an envelope that was addressed to him and Will, he opened it to see a letter.

'To my two boys,

First, you boys have a sister. Her name is Emilia Lily Halstead. She was born on October 31, 2009. Her mother took off when she was five. I told her all about you boys. I'm sorry for never telling you about her.

When you boys left I wanted to call you but I knew you were both still pissed with me, I was pissed at myself for driving you both away. I was consumed with some much grief. I drove you both away. That was my own fault. For that I apologize.

I wanted to tell you both about Emmy, I was afraid if I called, not only would you have ignored me. You wouldn't have accepted Emmy. I didn't want you boys to take anything out on her because of me. I guess that's why I kept her from you.

If one of you are reading this, then that means I'm dead or unable to care for Emmy. Should anything happen to me, I want you boys to take care of her. You may not trust me and I wouldn't blame you after the things I put you through. All I ask is whatever anger or hatred you have towards me, don't take it out on Emmy she's innocent. Please, please watch out and care for her.

But to all three of my children, I'm sorry. Pat'

By the time Jay was finished, he was stunned and in shock. This had half confirmed that Emmy was their sister. Now all they were waiting for was the test. And if the test confirms it, they're world is gonna get turned upside down.

He took the stuff back to the hospital. Emmy was struggling to stay awake, Will just watched as Ethan was checking her over. The older Halstead couldn't get over the face she looked like him, all but the hair and eyes. That was Jay.

He couldn't help but feel guilty, if they had stayed in contact with their father then they would know about the young girl. They didn't wanna deal with him or his problems. In the process they ignored an innocent child and if their father had done anything to her. He'd never forgive himself.

Jay walked in the hospital going to his brother. "How is she?"

"She's tired. She can't sleep due to her concussion. What'd you find?"

"Let's go to the lounge and talk"

The two brothers went to the lounge, Jay pulled everything out that he found. He showed all of it to his brother. Will had taken all the papers and read over them.

"I think with this, I believe Emmy is our sister. And I also think we should take her in" Jay told his brother.

"Who'd take care of her Jay? We both work long unpredictable hours"

"We'll figure it out but she has to come home with us, I don't want her going in the system"

"I did tell her we don't turn back on family. Alright we'll take her but there are legal steps that have to be taken. Tomorrow I'll call about getting guardianship of her. I have enough room at my place for her to stay there. I can make room for you on the couch"

"That could work for the moment. He left a letter for Emmy"

"I'll give it to her when she's more awake"

"I'll talk to Hank about adjusting my schedule. I can probably stay with her at night being you work nights"

"You stay with her at night, I stay with her during the day. That's a good idea"

Soon the night passed and it was morning, Jay had to tell Hank he needed the day off. Will's shift was just about done. Soon he got the results from the DNA sample. He felt his heart race. This was the moment of truth. This would determine if their lives were about to change.

He opened the results. They read..
