Chapter 6: Salvage and Recovery
"Don't worry," Batman reassured him, a rare hint of a smile touching his lips. "I managed to secure half of it." He subtly tapped his utility belt. "We can have the scientists extract the other half from Corben later."
Superman looked up, a wave of relief washing over him and a chuckle escaping his lips. "Never ceases to amaze me how you always seem to be one step ahead." The Man Of Steel stood up rolling his shoulders back, his strength returning.
"It's a necessary skill in this line of work," Batman replied, his voice returning to its usual stoic tone.
True to his word, within hours, Metallo was transported to a secure research facility hidden deep beneath Wayne Enterprises. Expert technicians, working under Bruce's strict instructions, carefully extracted the crystal fragment from Metallo's kryptonite heart. The cyborg, now powerless and dismantled, was locked away in a specially designed containment unit, his threat neutralized, at least for the time being. Meanwhile, Poison Ivy was returned to Arkham Asylum, where she would undergo intensive rehabilitation therapy, hopefully with a better outcome than the last time.
Later that night, in the hushed silence of the Batcave, Batman and Superman stood before a gleaming worktable. Using specialized Kryptonian technology that Superman had retrieved from the Fortress of Solitude, they had successfully fused the two halves of the emerald crystal back together. It pulsed with a soft, inner light, its energy palpable.
Superman gazed at the restored crystal, his eyes filled with a mixture of awe and hope. "It's... beautiful," he murmured, reaching out to gently touch its smooth surface. "I can feel the energy, Bruce. It's... familiar. There's something within it, something that speaks of Krypton."
"Perhaps it holds the answers you seek, Clark," Batman replied, his voice quiet. "Answers about your past, about your people."
Superman nodded, a sense of gratitude washing over him. "Thank you, Bruce," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "For everything."
"It was my pleasure, Clark," Batman replied, a rare genuine smile gracing his lips. "Thank you for accepting my invitation."
They had faced chaos and emerged victorious, fighting against kryptonite and chlorophyll. They stood ready to face whatever the future held, united in their unwavering commitment to protecting their city and upholding justice.
