In this pen pal experience, two students from two different schools exchange weekly letters, forming a friendship through the power of words. Over the course of two months, these letters become even more as they open up about their lives. They'll discover unexpected similarities, surprising differences, and maybe even more. And when the project comes to an end, what will happen?

Senior pen pal project:

The senior pen pal project is a longstanding tradition for senior students at both McGee High School and Davis High School and constitutes a significant component of their final grade. Upon assignment of a pen pal, students are obligated to compose a weekly letter, adhering to a word count between 200 and 500 words. All letters will be evaluated and graded before being sent to the other school. First names are permitted, but surnames are strictly confidential and must not be divulged. The content of these letters is unrestricted, as the objective of this project is to observe the ultimate outcome of the correspondence exchanged. All correspondence must maintain a respectful and appropriate tone, and the use of explicit language is strictly prohibited. This prohibition also encompasses all forms of discrimination, including those based on race, religion, sex, and sexual orientation. At the conclusion of the two-month period, students will participate in a survey to express their thoughts and give feedback.

Dear pen pal,

I'm so excited to begin our senior pen pal project! I've been looking forward to this tradition since I was a freshman, and I can't believe I'm finally getting the chance to participate. I think it's such a unique opportunity to connect with someone new and learn about their experiences, especially during such a big transitional year for both of us.

Here's a little bit about me. My name is Hermione, and I'm a 17-year-old senior at McGee High School. I've always been an avid reader, and books have been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. I believe that knowledge is power, and I've always felt this deep need to learn as much as I can about the world. I suppose that's why I've spent so much time with my nose in books over the years! I love how reading allows me to explore different perspectives, places, and time periods, all without ever leaving my room. I truly think that a good book has the power to shape the way we see the world. Do you enjoy reading? If so, do you have a favorite book or genre?

Academically, I'm particularly passionate about literature, history, and science, but I have a soft spot for magical and fantastical stories—though, of course, not actual magic! There's something so fascinating about tales that transport you to other worlds and let your imagination run wild. One of my favorite books is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I love the witty dialogue and the way Elizabeth Bennet challenges societal expectations. Are there any books or stories that have had a big impact on you?

Outside of academics, I'm very involved in extracurricular activities. I'm on my school's debate team, which has been such an incredible experience. I love a good intellectual challenge, and I think debating different perspectives is one of the best ways to grow and broaden our understanding of the world. I'm also the senior class president, which keeps me busy organizing events and working to make sure our final year is as memorable as possible. It can be a lot to juggle at times, but I genuinely love being involved and making a difference in my school community. Do you participate in any clubs or activities?

Since this is our first exchange, I'd love to get to know more about you! What are your interests and hobbies? Do you have a favorite subject in school? And, of course, what are your plans after graduation? It's both exciting and a little nerve-wracking to think about the future, but I like to believe that if we follow our passions and work hard, things will fall into place.
