Chapter 6

The next day, Luz woke up with the alarm and went to go get her daughters, seeing them still sleeping on the couch bed. "Good morning, mijas," she said, seeing them stir as she spoke.

"Mama?" Mila asked as she rubbed her eyes to wake up.

Solana sat up. "School?" She asked.

"Yup and then the weekend," Luz said, smiling. "Come on. Time to get dressed. I'll make muffins for breakfast."

The two young girls quickly got ready and as Amity came in, she smiled and hugged her daughters. "You two ready for school?" She asked.

"Yes, Mom," Solana said.

"By the way, if anyone bugs you two, you can come to your mom and me, okay?" Luz said.

Mila looked confused before Amity smiled. "I found your dress with paint on the back, Mila," she said gently. "I know you didn't do that and I know Solana didn't do that."

"How did you know that?" Solana asked.

Luz smiled. "String Bean was in your backpack and told us what happened after you girls returned home," she said.

"Oh," Mila said softly.

"We're not upset at you two," Amity reassured, understanding why the girls hadn't said anything. "But please let us know if it keeps happening."

"We'll talk to the principal and teacher if we need to," Luz said.

The brown-haired woman didn't think her words would come true so fast, but less than three hours into the school day, Luz and Amity were in the principal's office with the principal, their daughters' teacher, and the Superintendent.

"What. Happened. To. My. Daughters?" Luz asked slowly, her tone firm with barely-contained anger.

"Easy, Batata," Amity said soothingly, holding her partner's hand in her own before facing the three adults. "Where are my daughters right now?"

"They are with the school nurse," the teacher said before looking ashamed. "I'm so sorry. One minute the children were doing the lesson I had set out and the next, my nephew grabbed Mila's hair and called her a horrible name."

The Superintendent looked very upset. "I knew he wouldn't behave if he had his aunt for a teacher," he said, looking apologetically at the teacher. "No offense, sis."

"None taken, brother," she said understandingly. "I think he thought because I was his aunt, I wouldn't punish him for misbehaving."

The principal looked grim. "Mr. Superintendent, while I value children getting their education, I feel this latest infraction is the final straw for your son," he said, his words firm, but not towards the Superintendent. "As you are aware, your son has been a troublemaker for the past year."

"I really thought he grew out of it after last year," the man said. "But it seems my wife tells our son that he can do whatever he wants and that his aunt can't say a word about it."

The teacher shook her head. "I knew she disliked me, but she's going too far now," she said.

"I agree," the principal said. "I'm afraid I have to ask the boy to leave the school and not return."

"I understand, sir," the Superintendent said. "Rest assured, I will handle this all personally."

He then turned to Luz and Amity. "We should go see the nurse and ask her if your children need further medical attention," he suggested.

Thankfully, the girls were not badly hurt, though Mila had a bruise on her arm from when she had fallen from her chair after the bully had pushed her. Solana's hair had gotten pulled out from the braid Luz had done her hair in that morning, but she was alright otherwise. "I'm excusing the girls for the rest of the school day," the principal said. "They can return on Monday."

"I'll give you their assignments they can work on at home so that they don't miss a lesson," the teacher said.

The Superintendent apologized to both mothers and the two little girls. "You two will never have to worry about my son bothering you two again," he said. "He's going to be going to a different school from now on."

The ride home was quiet and once they got home, Amity made the girls one of their favorite snacks. "You girls eat up and then you can finish up your schoolwork," she said. "Do you want Mama and I to help you two?"

"Can you look over our work after we do it?" Solana asked.

"Of course," Luz said, kissing her eldest daughter's forehead before kissing her younger daughter's forehead too.

A couple hours later, the doorbell rang and Amity went to see it was the delivery man and she smiled at seeing it was the beds she and Luz had ordered for their daughters. "Thank you," she said to the delivery man, signing the papers to receive the packages.

"Need some help carrying them in, ma'am?" The young driver asked.

"No, thank you. We'll manage," she said politely.

After the driver left, Amity called up two Abominations, who carried the packages upstairs and into two rooms that were ready for the girls. "Alright, let's get the beds put together and I'll let Luz know," she said.

The two purple creatures worked fast and Amity smiled as the bed frames came together. "Batata! Can you come up here, please?" She called sweetly.

"Coming, Sweet Potato!" Luz called out as she went upstairs. When she saw the bed frames were set up, she gasped happily. "Oh! The bed frames!" She said happily. "Let's get the mattresses and sheets."

Soon, the beds were ready and Luz lifted Amity up and spun her around, making the purple-haired woman laugh. "Oh, these are perfect, Sweet Potato!" The brown-haired woman said happily.

Amity chuckled. "Let's go surprise the girls," she said.

Mila and Solana came upstairs when Luz called them. "We have a surprise for you two," she said to them.

"What is it?" Mila asked.

Amity smiled. "Why don't you open that door over there, Solana?" She suggested, pointing to a nearby door.

The seven-year-old opened the door and gasped as she saw her new room. "Is this...mine and Mila's room?" She asked.

"It's actually just your room, sweetie," Luz said. "Mila's room is right next to yours."

Mila looked curious and Luz gestured to another door. "Go on," she said encouragingly. "Open it."

The six-year-old did and was stunned to see her new room. "This...is all mine?" She asked.

"All yours, sweetie," Amity said.

Solana looked at her moms. "You guys really mean it," she said in awe. "Mila and I...? Really get to stay here? Our forever home?"

The two women nodded and the children ran to them and hugged them tightly, too overcome with emotion to speak, but their moms knew they were grateful for their new rooms.

Little did any of them know, someone from the past was looking to get to them.

And that means there will be the antagonist of the story showing up next.
