In the middle of a bustling city was a young-looking boy with oddly spiky black hair walking around. He wore a simple red hoodie and some blue jeans. His pale face showed how bored he was as he walked down the busy streets.

His name was Kai Atsura.

People knew him as a fairly social and friendly person, and if his friends had to describe him, it would be as a 'lovable' idiot. Someone who people got along with, but a moron nonetheless. By no means was he actually dumb, he just lacked the common sense most people had, which had cost him socially.

Within the 17 years of Kai's life, he hadn't had his first kiss let alone a girlfriend, but he didn't really care that much about it. He just chalked it up to his horrible luck, which he claimed was a "family curse".

Unfortunately, a mere two months ago, that family curse kicked into high gear, and his younger sister Naomi completely vanished off the face of the planet.

"Hah... What time is it?" Kai let out a sigh as he pulled out his phone to see that it was around 6 p.m. His parents would start to worry if he didn't get home soon. Looking under the time he saw a text from his friend.

'Yo Mr. No Luck, you wanna go hang out for a bit?'

It was almost as if a visible tick mark appeared on Kai's forehead. He really hated that nickname. "God, I need to get new friends..." He didn't really mean it.

Kai quickly responded with something along the lines of, "Not today."

Despite turning 17 a few days ago, Kai hadn't felt much joy... without his sister, it just felt... weird.

Looking up from his phone he saw something odd. It was a green mirror in the middle of the street. And it was somehow standing straight up.

Kai looked around and saw that no one else seemed to notice the oddity in the street.

"Hm... I must be tired or something." Kai shook his head as if trying to wake himself up. If it was real, then with his luck it would lead to nothing but trouble.

As he walked away, he blinked a couple of times and looked back at it and it was gone.

Guess I really was tir-

Kai's thoughts were interrupted as he looked in front of him and brought his legs to a stop. Right in front of his face was that mirror from before.

"Woah! Almost fell face first into-"

Of course, he had to run his big mouth, and not pay attention to anyone around him. Unfortunately for the young boy, a random passerby ran into him and pushed him straight through the mirror. Before the passerby could apologize, Kai was gone.

ㅤㅤ

Somewhere much, MUCH farther away than where Kai was a moment ago...

A large field sat in front of a castle-like structure with a group of robed students gathered around a similarly dressed robed man seemingly in his 40s. There was an excitement in the air as the robed students talked about how their summonings would go, or what kind of familiar they would get.

The older gentleman let out a cough to get the students' attention as he grandiosely raised his cane.

"Today is the day of your summoning. This also marks the first exam of your second year, as well as the sacred day where you first encounter your familiar, who you will spend the rest of your life with as if you were family."

Within the crowd of excited students, there was noticeably a short girl, with long pink hair, clutching what seemed to be a wand with a worried expression.

From behind her, a taller, more mature-looking girl with tan skin and flaming red hair appeared next to her, and whispered in a mocking tone, "I can hardly wait to see what grandfamiliar you summon."

The pink-haired girl scoffed. "Leave me alone." She just couldn't lose here.

Her name was Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière. A name befitting a noble of Tristain such as herself.

Typically those of noble birth are able to wield magic. Most of the time when nobles are young, they hone their magic at an academy such as the one Louise attended.

Eventually, the robed man explained how to perform the ritual, and students began to summon their familiars.

Most of the familiars seemed to be fantastical creatures, such as a one-eyed floating monster, a flaming salamander, or even a dragon. One boy summoned... a... mole? Not nearly as fantastical as the rest.

After many summonings, the teacher smiled as he looked around. This year's students seemed to have great potential. "Has everyone summoned their familiars?"

The red-haired girl spoke up immediately. "No, not yet." The girl smiled as she stared directly at Louise. "MissVallière hasn't yet."

Louise slightly gasped and then quickly glared daggers at the redhead as she walked forward. Whispers started to circulate around her from the other students.

"It's the Zero Louise, man..."

"What's she going to summon?"

"If it's anything, it'll probably be an explosion."

A few snickers were heard from the students.

Louise took a deep breath. If there is any spell I can do, it's this. With a gulp, she gripped her wand. Please work.

"My familiar, who lives somewhere in this cosmos, the one who shall defend me no matter the cost! Oh divine, powerful familiar! Hear my plea from my heart! Answer my calling!"

Her... unique chanting caught most people off guard, but as she finished and struck her wand down... nothing happened.

"Just what I expected from Louise the Zero..."

"What could she summon anyway? An explosion?" Laughter started to resound from students in the crowd.

Before the teacher could pull her to the side to let her try again some other time, Louise started chanting once more to try and make the spell work. This time, it had to be somewhat abridged.

"My sacred and strong servant, hear my call! Answer to my guidance and appear!" Louise once more struck her wand down.

For a moment there was silence, and then...

BOOM! BOOM!

Two separate explosions engulfed a majority of the students present. Dust flew everywhere blinding the students.

The boy who had summoned the mole from earlier reached out to a girl next to him.

"Are you all right, my dear Montmorency?"

The girl held a frog in her hands as she stared blankly into the dust.

"What's wrong?"

To answer his question, the girl pointed deep into the dust cloud.

Right in front of Louise, there were... two commoner boys?

"H-Humans?!"

"Two of them?!"

Students were clamoring around the boys.

"Those outfits... they are no doubt plebians..."

With a horrified expression, Louise could only stare at the sight in front of her.

"Sacred...? P-Powerful...?"

After a few moments of commotion, the two boys seemed to wake up. One of the boys was Kai, but the other one was new.

The new one had blue eyes and flat black hair, along with a blue and white parka on.

The two of them could only look around in confusion. Just moments ago they were somewhere completely different.

Soon they noticed a short girl with pink hair staring down at them. She spoke in a language neither of them could understand. "Do you two understand what I am saying?"

Kai blinked a few times. Where am I?

The redheaded girl walked up to Louise with a smirk on her face. "This makes all the wait worth it! I would have never guessed that you would have summoned a commoner, let alone two!"

Laughter erupted from the students as she finished her sentence.

Louise looked mortified for a moment but soon regained her composure. "It was just a little screw-up."

The boy next to Kai started to get annoyed since he thought the students were laughing at him. "Hey, what's going-"

Before he could even finish his sentence, which no one there could understand, Louise cut him off. "Shut up!"

Hearing the boy triggered something in Kai's mind. Was that Japanese?

Louise turned to the teacher and started pleading to him. "Mr. Colbert! Please let me try the summoning again!"

Shaking his head, Mr. Colbert simply said, "I'm afraid I can't let you do that. This is a sacred ceremony that determines a mage's life. Redoing it would be a desecration of the ceremony itself. Regardless of whether you like it or not, they have been decided as your familiars."

After rubbing his eyes, Kai took a moment to think. What the hell are they saying? And why are they dressed up in weird clothes?

Kai looked to the other boy who looked as confused as he was. Kai nodded his head over to a spot, and the boy seemed to pick up what he was hinting at. The two of them started to crawl away when Louise grabbed their shirt collars.

"But I've never heard of taking a commoner as a familiar, let alone two of them!" Hearing Louise's outburst, students from around started to laugh at her.

Mr. Colbert had a stern tone. "Whether it's a commoner or not, there will be no exceptions. Continue with the ceremony."

Louise looked completely devastated. "Eh!? With them?!" She poked the two boys with her wand.

Mr. Colbert was more firm. "Now."

Louise let out a small sigh as she turned to the boy next to Kai. Since he was on the ground, he didn't really have anywhere to run, so all he could do was look up with a scared look on his face.

"You better be grateful..." Before the boy could ask any questions, she leaned down and planted a kiss on his forehead.

Kai looked at the two in utter confusion. What... is going on?

Moments after the boy regained his composure, he screamed as he clutched his left hand and passed out.

Kai looked at him in horror. Was he next? Oh no... Nonono... Not a moment later Kai started to crawl away.

"You too... you'd better be grateful. A noble doesn't do this for anyone." Louise's voice was softer, and her cheeks were beet red as the laughing got louder.

Is she embarrassed? About kissing people? Then why kiss some random person anyway!?

Kai didn't care about what she was saying and started panicking as he crawled away.

Louise's face flashed a look of annoyance. "Just stay still!" She was easily able to grab Kai's head to try to keep him in place.

I can't let her do that to me!

Kai struggled even more, causing the students to laugh even harder, in turn making Louise more desperate to end this charade.

In a desperate attempt to get free, Kai closed his eyes and jerked his head back, but that only pulled Louise toward him and...

Soft...

Kai slowly opened his eyes to see that girl's face in front of his... and her lips were on his.

The roars of laughter rose up even higher as the students watched the whole fiasco.

"Bwahaha! She actually kissed him!"

"She only needed to kiss a part of him, but she went for a full kiss with this one!"

Louise quickly stood up with a look of pure hatred on her face.

Quickly a burning sensation ran through Kai's body, and for some odd reason, it felt like the area above his tailbone was splitting itself apart.

No one seemed to care about Kai's pain and they just laughed and laughed. Before the pain would make him pass out, he saw the pure rage and embarrassment on the girl's face.

"Y-Y-You... DOG!" She slapped him so hard in the face he was knocked out.

..ke .p...

Mn... Five more minutes...

WAKE UP!

Kai jolted awake from an odd voice in his head. Feeling panicked by that voice he looked around. He found himself lying on some hay in an oddly fancy room, on another pile of hay nearby was that boy from earlier.

"Guess it wasn't a dream..." Kai looked a little disappointed, but his words woke that boy up.

"Ah!" Hearing that boy scream made Kai scream back. "Ah!" Hearing Kai's scream, the boy screamed again. "Ah!"

"Will you both shut up!" Hearing that odd language again, Kai and the boy turned to see that girl from earlier.

The girl started to walk around the room with her arms crossed. "I've thought about this to the point of making myself sick, but I've given up and decided to make you both my familiars. You two should feel honored."

The two of them couldn't understand her words, but her general tone and the way she moved while she talked sounded demeaning.

The boy next to Kai jumped up and started yelling. "Where am I?! Why did you kidnap me!? Take me back home!"

The three in the room all spoke different languages, which meant they couldn't understand each other in the slightest.

Louise paid him no mind and started to get changed into her negligee.

Kai instantly covered his eyes. "What the hell are you doing!?" The other boy had the same idea, yelling something similar.

Louise threw her old clothes at Kai. "You, dog, go wash these before morning. Even if you don't understand my words, you're my familiar, so you should understand that order, right?"

With a mind between being completely offended and embarrassed, Kai didn't know what to do.

"Jeez, you can't even understand your master's orders? You're worse than a dog!"

The two boys started to yell more and more, wondering what the hell was going on.

The loud 'gibberish' coming from the two boys annoyed Louise beyond belief. "So noisy!" She clutched her head to try and dull the oncoming headache. Then an idea came to her. "That's right! There's that spell of silence I learned last year."

Louise walked over and grabbed her wand while the two boys were wanting to wake up from this nightmare. "Let's see... Ansul, bel, an." Louise raised her wand and pointed straight at the two boys. "Comply to my order by silence."

After waving her wand something miraculous happened...

The two boys were consumed by an explosion.

Louise looked down at the two boys on the floor as if nothing had happened. "That's strange."

Kai's weak voice was heard. "W-What was that...?" He shook his head, regaining his composure.

Hearing him, Louise seemed a bit surprised.

"Okay, that does it..." Kai looked like he was ready to attack Louise.

"I understood you."

Kai looked confused. Did he just understand her? "Did you... what?" He cocked his head to the side.

"Say something." Louise's gaze was firm as if confirming that Kai could understand her.

"Something. But... You can speak English?"

From below Kai heard that boy from earlier, but this time he understood it. "What? You're speaking Japanese."

Louise looked at the two somewhat disappointedly. "What's going on? That spell was silence you both." She hung her head dejectedly. "It looks like I failed again." Quickly calming herself she looked at the two boys. "What are your names?"

The boy stood up and dusted himself off. "My name is Hiraga Saito."

"Kai. Kai Atsura."

"Hiragasito? Kaitsura?" To Louise, those were the weirdest names she had ever heard.

The boy, whose name was Saito, waved his hands. "Forget that! Why are we here?"

Kai voiced his thoughts. "I'd love to know that too!"

Louise put her hands on her hips. "Obviously because I summoned you both as my familiars." She made it sound as if it were the most obvious thing on the planet.

Kai lightly slapped his head, being as sarcastic as possible. "Right, why didn't we think of that?"

After Louise had explained a few things to them, Kai and Saito wanted to confirm the facts with her.

Saito started. "So, this is the Kingdom of Tristain, on the mainland Halkeginia..." Louise nodded along.

Kai continued. "And you're a student at this 'magic academy'?"

Louise interrupted. "As my familiar, I won't allow you to address me as 'you'. I'm Louise. Louise de La Vallière."

Waving his hand, Kai dismissed what Louise had said. "Right, whatever. So Saito and I are thefamiliars thatLouise de La Vallièresummoned, right?"

Saito looked a little bored while going through the facts. "And a familiar is something that a mage takes around to help them. I know that much from watching movies and reading manga."

Louise let out a big sigh. "Why am I stuck with two commoners as familiars? I wanted something cool like a dragon, or a griffin." During her little pity party, she failed to notice something pivotal.

Kai and Saito were gone. "Hiragasito? Kaitsura?"

She looked around for a moment, and when she found that the door was ajar, she looked as if she had lost a puppy she had just found.

"They ran away?"

Kai and Saito were running down the hallway right outside of Louise's room. They had agreed that this place was crazy. Unfortunately for Kai, he tripped over something in his pants.

"What happened?" Saito turned to help Kai up, but Kai just reached into his pants with a look of confusion.

"What the..." Kai pulled out what seemed to be a monkey tail. "What the hell?!" Looking at it closer, he noticed that his left hand had some sort of tattoo or something on it. Saito had the same thing on his left hand.

"Look at your hand! They marked us or something! And they stuck a tail on me!"

"We can't wait any longer, we've got to go!" Saito pulled Kai off the ground, and the two of them rushed down some stairs. Kai tried his absolute best to try not to trip over his new tail.

"I don't know if they're some cult or some fantasy geeks, but we can't stay here!" Saito ran down the stairs like a madman.

"It's crazy! How'd they even put a tail on me?!"

Before the two could continue their rushed conversation, they ran into two students who were seemingly flirting, so they ducked back into the staircase to not be seen. They could only eavesdrop on bits of their conversation.

From their conversation, it was easy to tell that the guy, who was called Guiche, was using the girl he was with, who was named Katie. Once the two of them leaned on each other, Kai and Saito took it as their chance to crawl past them so as not to be seen. Unfortunately, they were quickly found.

"It's those peasant boys that Louise summoned." Guiche looked a bit confused seeing them crawl on the ground.

Uh oh. The two of them froze.

"You mean the ones from the summoning ritual earlier? It caused quite a stir in the first-year students."

Kai eyed Saito, trying to communicate. We should go. Saito gave a short nod.

The two of them bolted forward, not giving them a chance to ask questions.

"Tch. What rude commoners, don't they know that they shouldn't mess with nobility like that?" Guiche looked confused as he heard sprinting from the stairs.

As Kai and Saito kept running they spotted another couple flirting. By this point they needed a quick breather, they had been sprinting for a while now. This school was a damned maze!

"Ah! Saito! The exit!"

The two of them ran forward, ignoring whatever comments the couple would make. If they wanted to be free, this was it for them.

From right behind them, a short pink-haired girl pointed at Kai and Saito. "Over there!"

"What's going on?" The girl from that new couple looked confused. She seemed to be the girl who was making fun of Louise earlier.

Guiche smirked. "Just wait till you get a load of this." He wiped a few tears away since he had been laughing for a minute or two.

"Enough! They're getting away!" Louise yelled at the two of them.

"Freedom! We're free! Saito, we just have to make it past the gate and we can go home!" Kai was excited, this short kidnapping would stay just that. Short.

"I can be in my bed at home... ahh~!"

"I can picture it nooOoOw!" Saito quickly looked over to see what happened to Kai, only to see him start floating in the air, almost as if it were magic.

"Just give up," It was Guiche's voice.

"Huh?" Saito looked toward where the voice came from and saw that red-head girl, Guiche, and Louise.

"This is the second time I've had to keep you afloat."

Guiche smirked as he flicked his wand, which flung Kai around in the air.

"Waaaaah!"

Guiche started laughing again.

"You summoned familiars that run away from their master. That is perfect for you." The redhead laughed at Louise.

"So magic is real..." Saito looked at Kai being flung around in disbelief.

Kai was about to hurl when he looked up to the sky... "Two moons!? You're kidding me!"
