Elena was burning sage in her room. She'd just called for Elijah and asked to speak with him. Given the subject matter of the conversation, she decided he might prefer some privacy.
There was soon a knock on the door.
"Come in, Elijah," Elena said.
Elijah walked in a moment later and took notice of what she was doing. "Sage. My mother used to burn that for privacy, especially after we turned." He soon realized Elena might not appreciate the comparison to his mother. "My apologies."
"Elijah, if I let it upset me every time I was reminded of your mother, I'd have gone insane by now. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to talk about your mother. And who do you think taught her about burning sage? There were often times when we were young that we needed privacy when we spoke," Elena said.
"And what do you wish to discuss now that you don't want my siblings hearing?" Elijah asked.
"Actually, the sage is for you. I wanted to discuss something with you that you may not want anyone to know right away. Have a seat," Elena said.
Elijah nodded before pulling up a desk chair from the desk across from the bed.
Elena sat down on the edge of the bed. "Do you remember me telling you that I took a look at your memories shortly after we met?"
"Of course. I'm not upset by it if that's what you wanted to discuss. I understand why you did it," Elijah said. He still did not fully trust Elena, but he believed the things she'd told him and his siblings thus far.
"I'm glad to hear that, but, no, that's not why I brought it up. I saw some things while I was trying to determine who you were that concern me," she said.
Elijah frowned. He wasn't sure what she could have seen that would give her any concern. He was sure she'd seen him do things that weren't exactly pretty, but he didn't think that was what she meant.
"Evidence of a memory spell and evidence of repressed memories," Elena said.
Elijah shook his head. "I haven't repressed any memories."
"Elijah, you wouldn't know if you did. That's sort of the point. I'm familiar with memory spells. I know what they look like inside someone's mind," Elena told him.
"You've used them?" Elijah asked.
"Not often. They're dangerous. You could end up destroying someone's mind if you're not careful. On the rare occasion that I've used it, it has mainly been to avoid someone learning or what I am," Elena explained.
"What did you see inside of me?" Elijah asked, feeling more than a little unsettled.
"I sensed the residual magic from a memory spell. I also came across a door. When you see a lone door or a wall inside someone's mind, it usually indicates a block," she told him.
Elijah shifted uncomfortably. "Uh, I don't know what to say."
"I know this is unsettling to you. I can certainly imagine what it must be like to hear that someone meddled with your memory," Elena said.
"Someone? If anyone used a memory spell on me, I don't think either one of us is unclear on who it was," Elijah said. There was only one person who could've tampered with his memory. His mother was the only one with the ability and the motive, although he would have to admit that he had no idea what that motive was.
Elena sighed. She did have a fairly good idea of who it was, but she didn't want to upset Elijah any more than he already was by speculating. "Has your mother ever used memory spells on any of you before?"
"Not to my knowledge, but she wouldn't admit it if she had," Elijah said.
Elena nodded. "Once she handled things with Elijah, she would ask the others to let her check them for memory spells as well. This type of thing wasn't safe.
"What now? You're telling me this because you wish to do something about it, right?" Elijah asked.
Elena nodded. "So far, the block doesn't seem to have done you any damage, but these kinds of things never last forever, especially with someone who has been alive as long as you have. Eventually, it will break, and the results could be devastating. That's why most witches use memory spells so sparingly. I want to break the door myself here, where I can control the fallout."
"What kind of fallout?" Elijah asked.
"I can't know that without knowing what has been suppressed, but I don't imagine that it's anything tame," Elena said.
"To break the door down, you'd have to go into my mind again, correct," Elijah asked.
"Yes. There's no way around that," Elena said.
"What if I were to say no?" Elijah asked. He was concerned for multiple reasons. He didn't trust anyone enough to let them into his mind, not even his own siblings. He was also concerned about the fallout that Elena mentioned.
"Then I would accept that answer for now. Like I said, it's currently not causing you problems," Elena said.
"For now?" Elijah asked. He didn't miss her word choice.
"Yes, for now. I will insist on it eventually because, as I said, the block wouldn't be able to hold up forever, but it's important that you're able to trust me, and I know you don't yet. If you need time, I'll give it to you," Elena told him.
Elijah was quiet for a while, not sure what to do. He didn't like the fact that his mind had been tampered with, but he also didn't like the idea of someone tampering with it further, even if it was just to fix the initial problem. "I would like to think about it for a while."
Elena nodded. "That's fine, dear. As I said, there's no hurry. There are some things I want to go over with you for when it does happen. Like I told you before, there will likely be some fallout. You will have trouble adjusting, so I'm going to need to keep you under my supervision for a while. That means you will not be able to leave this house, and you will need to do what I ask of you. Do you understand?"
"I don't typically take orders from others," Elijah said calmly but firmly.
"I know, but this isn't a typical situation, and I know you don't want to accidently hurt someone you care about if you aren't able to remain in control," Elena said.
"You think that could happen?" he asked.
"I think I'm not willing to risk it," Elena said firmly.
"Alright, I understand," Elijah said before standing up. "Thank you for telling me all of this. You could've just forced your way into my mind and broken the block yourself. I appreciate that you didn't."
"Delving into someone's mind is deeply personal. Had I known you were my nephew, I wouldn't have done it the first time. You will never trust me if I simply force my will on you without talking to you about it," Elena said.
"I cannot say that I fully trust you, but for what it's worth, I trust you a little more after today," Elijah said.
"It means a lot," Elena said with a smile.
"The others like you, except for Nikaus, but he doesn't like anyone," Elijah said.
"I will bring him around. He just needs the right kind of attention," Elena said with a smirk.
Elijah chuckled. "You speak as though he's a child. Admittedly, he does act like that quite often."
Just then there was a knock at the door.
"Yeah?" Elena called out.
Jeremy opened the door moments later. "Hey, you guys might want to get downstairs. Klaus and Kol are about to come to blows.
"As I was saying," Elijah said with a huff before heading out of the room.
Elena was behind him. They made it to the living room just in time for Kol to shove his older brother.
"I'm warning you," Klaus said.
"What are you going to do, brother? Dagger me? Oh, but you can't. Our aunt destroyed your favorite toys. I suppose you'll have to deal with your problems like a man instead of the coward you are," Kol taunted.
Klaus snarled and shoved him into the nearest wall, denting it in the process.
"Both of you stop this!" Elijah said as he went to get in the middle of the argument.
Elena raised both hands and used magic to send both her quarreling nephews to the couch. She then kept them from getting up, much like she did Rebekah when she revealed herself to her. "Enough!"
Klaus tried and failed to stand up. He glared at Elena in response. "Let me up!"
"Quiet, Niklaus! Do I even want to know how this happened?"
"Jeremy and I were playing a game and Nik decided to make a comment on me possibly draining him, which I wouldn't do! I got pissed!" Kol snarled.
"Yes, because it's not as if you've drained entire cities before," Klaus said sarcastically.
"Look who's bloody talking!" Kol yelled.
"Both of you, zip it!" Elena said sharply.
Just then, Rebekah and Finn walked in. "I knew it was only a matter of time before one or both of those two acted idiotic," Rebekah commented.
"So, from the sound of it, the two of you decided to act like a couple of misbehaving little boys. Niklaus, you decided to bait your little brother, and Kol, you took the bait," Elena lectured.
Elijah shook his head and gave her look as though to say, 'see what I deal with.' "I'm sorry about the damage to the wall, Elena. We'll pay for it."
"Why are you apologizing, Elijah. You didn't do it. These two are going to fix the wall themselves," Elena said as she pointed to her two youngest nephews.
Klaus immediately protested. "Wait a minuteā¦"
"Quiet! I told you that I wouldn't tolerate violence in this house. You'll deal with the consequences," Elena said before she started to walk away.
"Wait, you're not going to leave us like this, are you?" Kol asked before he attempted to move off the couch.
"Yep. Part of the consequences. If you're going to act like petulant little boys, I'm going to treat you like it," Elena said before walking away.
"What?" Klaus asked in disbelief.
Jeremy didn't even try to contain his laughter as he looked at two of the oldest and most powerful beings in existence. "I'm pretty sure she just put you in a magical timeout."
