Chapter 4
Detention from Delores Umbridge
(Opening song. Danger Danger by FZMZ feat. icy.)
(Present Day)
Harry hadn't slept a single hour since the incident in the restricted section of the library. All he could think about were those glaring yellow eyes of the creature that was summoned by Yuno. He slowly got out of bed, he was going to need some extra coffee this morning at breakfast.
The Gryfindors made their way with the Ravenclaws as each of the houses sat down. Harry, Ron, and Hermoine, hands each made a b-line for the coffee as they sipped it down, immediately going for another one after they were done.
"Too much of that stuff isn't good for ya little bro" Fred chimed in as he sat down next to Ron.
"Shut it, I'm not in the mood" Ron groaned tiredly as took another sip.
"Damn, each one of you looked like you got the soul ripped right off ya bodies. What were you three up to last night?
Harry hesitated as he looked at Ron and Hermoine. "Studying" he simply said
"For the O.W.L's"
Fred and George busted out laughing.
"That story we were tellin' you blokes so worked up you were up all night studying?" Fred chuckled.
"We have to pass them one way or another" Hermoine yawned as she poured herself another cup of coffee.
McGonagall came around again and passed around their class schedules, which got another groan from Ron as she rested his forehead on the table.
"Is this going to be an everyday thing, Ron?" Hermonie asked.
"We got Umbridge this morning, bloody hell, and after…" Ron was about to finish when Harry shot him a look. He gave a confused look until he followed Harry's eyes. Sitting across the hall parallel to them at Slytherin was Yuno. The young Slytherin smiled cheerfully and gave an innocent wave to Ron. Ron waved back as he looked at Harry.
"After all that studying we did, I'm bloody tired," Ron said as he grabbed another piece of toast. Harry could feel Yuno's presence from across the hall. Ever since he got back, he felt an uneasy aura around Hogwarts. He thought it just had to do with the trial he had before the start of the year and Umbridge being a professor, but Harry now realized it was Yuno's magic that was causing his anxiety.
The bell rang and the houses were dismissed to their first classes of the morning. Harry walked alongside Ron and Hermione as they headed towards the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom.
"You think he saw us last night" Ron asked, leaning over to whisper in Harry's ear
"Not sure, but I bet he knows we witnessed what he did in the library," Harry whispered back. "Bet that little wave "hello" was to see what one of our reactions to him would be."
"More like rubbing it in our faces," Hermoine whispered in a bitter tone. "arrogant brat"
They entered the classroom as Umbridge began to magically write down yesterday's lesson that had been cut short by Yuno. It was a rehash of the first three chapters and included a fourth chapter. Harry noticed that Yuno wasn't in the class.
"Professor Umbridge, isn't there supposed to be-" Harry began
"Mr.-Lovercraft-was-removed-from-my-class-immediately-after-that last-incident-and-speaking-his-name-is-strictly-forbidden," Umbridge said in one breath. Her face became a bit red at the mere thought of Yuno's taunts at her from yesterday.
Everyone's eyes widened at Umbridge's directness. She quickly composed herself with a wide and sweet-looking smile.
"Despite his… supposed talents, I thought it was just too much for a first year to be learning this course. He is a mere child after all"
Harry rolled his eyes at the statement, knowing it was because of the taunts last class had struck a nerve with her. Ron leaned over. "Yeah definitely, "too advanced" for him" he whispered.
"Anyways," Umbridge cleared her throat as her fake smile returned. "Today, we will all be continuing chapters 1 & 3 with an additional chapter to make up for lost time. Wands down, quills out."
As Umbridge continued her lesson. The students again questioned the reason why they were learning the theory of defense rather than any actual spells. A hand shot up from the back of the class.
"Yes Mr.-"
"Thomas" Dean answered, "I still don't get why we're going over basic theory, aren't these readings better suited for second years?"
"It is the view of the Ministry that theoretical knowledge will be more than sufficient to get you through your examination, which, after all, is what school is all about." Umbridge answered Dean as she started staring at Parvati, whose hand had just shot up.
"And your name is?"
"Parvati Patil, and isn't there a practical bit in our Defence Against the Dark Arts OWL? Aren't we supposed to show that we can actually do the counter-curses and things?"
"As long as you have studied the theory hard enough, there is no reason why you should not be able to perform the spells under carefully controlled examination conditions,' said Professor Umbridge dismissively with an unconvincing smile
"Without ever practicing them beforehand?" said Parvati incredulously. 'Are you telling us that the first time we'll get to do the spells will be during our exam?"
"I repeat, as long as you have studied the theory hard enough -"
"And what good's theory going to be in the real world?" said Harry loudly, his fist in the air again, Umbridge looked up.
"This is school, Mr Potter, not the real world," she said softly.
"So we're not supposed to be prepared for what's waiting for us out there?"
"Nothing is waiting out there, Mr Potter."
"Oh, yeah?" said Harry his voice low. His temper, which seemed to have been bubbling just beneath the surface all day was reaching boiling point.
"Who do you imagine wants to attack children like yourselves?" enquired Professor Umbridge in a horribly honeyed voice.
"We were attacked in the library by a dark creature just last night!" Ron yelled out, which caused everyone to gasp. Harry and Hermoine shot a warning look at Ron. The class soon erupted with whispers and confused talk. Word was going spread about the outburst, and Yuno was no doubt going the hear about it.
Umbridge flinched not expecting that answer. She stared at Ron with a raised eyebrow, she quickly composed herself looking at Ron with a fake smile.
"Ten points from Gryffindor for lies, Mr. Weasely."
Ron was about to go on a tirade when Harry grabbed his arm. "That's not fair," he said in defense of his friend. "a real Professor would take that statement seriously"
The classroom was silent and still. Everyone was staring at either Umbridge or Harry
"Now, let me make a few things quite plain." Professor Umbridge stood up and leaned towards them, her stubby-fingered hands splayed on her desk.
"I see that you poor children are already starting to get paranoid. Mostly because you have been told that a certain Dark wizard has returned from the dead -"
"You mean Voldemort?" Harry asked which caused the whole class to yelp in terror. "He was never dead, but yeah he's returned"
'Mr-Potter-your-house-has-already-lost-ten-points-do-not-make-matters-worse-foryourself,' said Professor Umbridge in one breath without looking at him. "As I was saying, you have been informed that a certain Dark wizard is at large once again. This is a lie."
"It is not a lie" Harry yelled
"Detention, Mr. Potter!" said Umbridge triumphantly.
"This evening. Five o'clock. My office. I repeat, this is a lie. The Ministry of Magic guarantees that you are not in danger from any Dark wizard or "dark creatures". If you are still worried, by all means, come and see me outside class hours. If someone is alarming you with fibs about reborn Dark wizards, I would like to hear about it. I am here to help. I am your friend. And now, you will kindly continue your reading. Page five, "Basics for Beginners".
Professor Umbridge sat down behind her desk. Harry, however, stood up. Everyone was staring at him; Seamus looked half-scared, half-fascinated.
"Harry, no!" Hermione whispered in a warning voice, tugging at his sleeve, but Harry jerked his arm out of her reach.
"So, according to you, Cedric Diggory dropped dead of his own accord, did he?" Harry asked, his voice shaking.
There was a collective intake of breath from the class, for none of them, apart from Ron and Hermione had ever heard Harry talk about what had happened on the night Cedric had died.
They stared avidly from Harry to Professor Umbridge, who had raised her eyes and was staring at him without a trace of a fake smile on her face.
"Cedric Diggory's death was a tragic accident"' she said coldly.
"It was murder," said Harry. He could feel himself shaking. He had hardly spoken to anyone about this, least of all thirty eagerly listening classmates. "Voldemort killed him and you know it"
Professor Umbridge's face was quite blank. For a moment, Harry thought she was going to scream at him.
Then she said, in her softest, most sweetly girlish voice, "Come here, Mr Potter, Dear."
He kicked his chair aside, strode around Ron and Hermione, and up to the teacher's desk. He could feel the rest of the class holding its breath. He felt so angry he did not care what happened next.
He kicked his chair aside, strode around Ron and Hermione, and up to the teacher's desk. He could feel the rest of the class holding its breath. He felt so angry he did not care what happened next. Professor Umbridge pulled a small roll of pink parchment out of her handbag, stretched it out on the desk, dipped her quill into a bottle of ink, and started scribbling, hunched over so that Harry could not see what she was writing. Nobody spoke. After a minute or so she rolled up the parchment and tapped it with her wand; it sealed itself seamlessly so that he could not open it.
"Take this to Professor McGonagall, dear," said Professor Umbridge, holding out the note to him.
He took it from her without saying a word, turned on his heel, and left the room, not even looking back at Ron and Hermione, slamming the classroom door shut behind him.
(As Harry made his way to Professor McGonagall's office)
McGonagall sat in the office she had just delivered a student file. Transfers from the Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that would be arriving in 3 weeks. She opened the student folder and her eyes went wide. She couldn't believe what she saw in the students' folders.
"My god! She's the spitting image of-" she began to mutter under her breath until she heard yelling out from outside her office. She recognized the voice as Harry's ( "SHUT UP!" she heard him yell)
Professor McGonagall opened the door and emerged from her office looking grim and slightly harassed. "What on earth are you shouting about, Potter?" she snapped, as Peeves cackled gleefully and zoomed out of sight. "Why aren't you in class?"
"I've been sent to see you," said Harry stiffly.
"Sent? What do you mean, sent?"
He held out the note from Professor Umbridge. Professor McGonagall took it from him, frowning, slit it open with a tap of her wand, stretched it out, and began to read. Her eyes zoomed from side to side behind their square spectacles as she read what Umbridge had written, and with each line, they became narrower.
"Come in here, Potter."
He followed her inside her study. The door closed automatically behind him. Professor McGonagall eyes Harry. He looks awful like he hasn't slept at all since he arrived
"Potter, have you even slept since the first day? You look like death, my boy." Professor McGonagall asked concern.
Harry looked away for a moment still remembering the piercing eyes of the abomination last night and Yuno's suspicion of them.
"Just couldn't sleep last night, don't know why." Harry simply said
"Have a biscuit," she said, indicating a tartan tin lying on top of one of the piles of papers on her desk.
"And sit down."
There had been a previous occasion when Harry, expecting to be caned by Professor McGonagall had instead been appointed by her to the Gryffindor Quidditch team. He sank into a chair opposite her and helped himself to a Ginger Newt.
"Potter, you need to be careful."
Harry swallowed his mouthful of Ginger Newt and stared at her. Her tone of voice was not at all what he was used to; it was not brisk, crisp, and stern; it was low and anxious and somehow much more human than usual.
"Misbehaviour in Dolores Umbridge's class could cost you much more than house points and a detention."
"What do you -?"
"Potter, use your common sense," snapped Professor McGonagall, with an abrupt return to her usual manner. "You know where she comes from, you must know to whom she is reporting."
Harry sighed knowing she was right. Umbridge answered directly to Minister, and that she was sent to spy on the school and Dumbledore.
"I know, it's just….we….we were attacked by a dark creature last night Professor. So when she said that, I lost my cool about how she blew it off. She called Ron a liar for it" Harry explained
Professor McGonagall's look softened a bit but also turned to one of concern. "A dark creature you say, here? That is troubling, I will have others in the staff look into this. Where did you see it last night?"
"Near the Library," Harry said, only revealing part of the truth, fearing what Yuno would do to them or the rest of the school if the professors started investigating him.
Professor McGonagall nodded understandingly. The bell rang overhead, signaling that class was over."
"It says here she's given you detention every evening this week, starting tomorrow," Professor McGonagall said, looking down at Umbridge's note again.
"Every evening this week!" Harry repeated, horrified. "But, Professor, couldn't you -?"
"No, I couldn't," said Professor McGonagall flatly.
"But -"
"She is your teacher and has every right to give you detention. You will go to her room at five o'clock tomorrow for the first one. Just remember: tread carefully around Dolores Umbridge."
"But I was telling the truth!' said Harry, outraged. "Voldemort is back, you know he is; Professor Dumbledore knows he is -"
"For heaven's sake, Potter!' said Professor McGonagall, straightening her glasses angrily (she had winced horribly when he had used Voldemort's name).
"Do you really think this is about truth or lies? It's about keeping your head down and your temper under control!"
Harry clenched his teeth knowing what Professor McGonagall said was true.
"Didn't you listen to Dolores Umbridge's speech at the start-of-term feast, Potter?"
"Yeah," said Harry. "She said… progress will be prohibited or… well, it meant that… that the Ministry of Magic is trying to interfere at Hogwarts."
Professor McGonagall eyed him closely for a moment, then sniffed, walked around her desk, and held open the door for him.
"Well, I'm glad you listen to Hermione Granger at any rate," she said, pointing him out of her office.
(After dinner, during social hour)
In the library, Cho Chang is talking to her Ravenclaw friends.
"Girls, trust me, we will win this Quidditch match for sure." She said and reached for some books on the shelf. She tried to pick up the book, stood up on her tiptoes, lost her balance, and stumbled a bit forward almost falling if it wasn't for someone right in front of her.
"Oh! Sorry" she says as she reaches for her books
"Quite alright, here let me help," Yuno says as he hands her a book.
Cho gives a friendly smile to the first year as he gathers the books in front of her.
"How are you enjoying Hogwarts?" Cho asked as she took the last book from him.
"It's great. The Slytherin common rooms are a bit gloomy, but nothing I'm not used to" Yuno said giving an innocent smile.
Cho then recognizes the boy from the sorting two days ago.
"Your name's Yuno right? The Sorting Hat freaked out when you wore it." Cho says, recognizing Yuno's scarlet red eyes.
Yuno gives a sheepish nod and his cheeks flush. "Yeah don't know what that was all about" he laughs.
Cho's friends giggled at that young boy, thinking he had a crush, while Cho rolled her eyes at them.
"Well, it was nice meeting you," Cho says as she begins to away.
"Actually since you're a sixth year, I was hoping you could show me the best places that are to study. I'm a muggle-born and people in my house keep harassing me as I'm trying to study" Yuno asks her.
Cho, thinking nothing of it, nodded her head.
"Sure, I'd be happy too, but I have a Quidditch practice tonight so I'll have to be quick," Cho answered warmly.
"Thanks!" Yuno said cheerfully
Cho and Yuno left the library and walked down the halls long corridors of Hogwarts.
"I'm sorry that the Slytherins are such jerks to muggle-borns. It's disgraceful" Cho said to Yuno as they walked down the corridor.
"It's quite alright, I can manage to give back the insults, but it does take away from my study time," Yuno said with a reassuring smirk.
As they walk, they come by a small memorial.
"Can we stop here for a moment?" Cho asked, catching Yuno off guard until he looked up and saw the picture of Cedric hanging up on the wall.
"Sure" Yuno simply said, a more authentic tone to his voice.
Cho knelt at the memorial taking a flower out of her pack and placing it in front of the memorial. She gently stroked the picture of Cedric that was in the middle of the memorial. Yuno's expression softened when he saw Cho's saddened expression
"I heard about what happened to him, from the other students I mean," he said as he knelt by her.
"Yeah, I'm sure, it's….been the talk of the school as of lately," Cho said with a frown.
"Must sting hearing all the rumors when you're trying to move forward… You're still not over it are you?" Yuno said with a sympathetic tone
She let out a heavy sigh and shook her head. "How can I be over it? Everyone expects me to just move on and be happy again. But... every time I try to be happy, I think about him. He was taken from me too soon." she said as she began to cry. Yuno noticed that there was a hint of anger in her words.
"I know the feeling of having someone close to you being taken away from by someone else. I've lost friends of mine not too long ago, or at least that's how it feels" he said putting a hand on Cho's shoulder.
Cho looks at him with sorrow and a bit of surprise. She didn't expect Yuno to feel her pain, but his voice was sincere.
"I'm sorry. Were they... close friends?" She asked, hesitantly reached out and lightly touched his hand, offering some comfort.
"Like family"
Cho looked at Yuno with compassion, feeling a sort of kinship with him in their pain.
"It's never easy to lose someone close. You seem... different from the other first years here, Yuno. You have this confidence and aura about you. It reminds me of him in a way" Cho said as she took a glance at Cedric's picture, with flowers around it
"Well, I am starting to outperform my fellow students. You could say I'm starting to get a big head," Yuno chuckled softly. They sat there a moment until Yuno reached into his pocket and pulled out a golden coin handing it to Cho
"Here,"
Cho looked at the coin in confusion, it wasn't a galleon, it almost looked like a coin someone would find at a museum "What is this."
"A gift." he said "Flip it whenever you're finally ready to make him pay"
Cho didn't fully understand the coin or what Yuno meant, but her emotions were high and she did, deep down inside, want to make Voldemort suffer for killing Cedric.
"Ok," she said putting the coin in her pocket.
Yuno smiles and looks at his watch. " I think you need to get to your Quidditch practice"
"Oh, right thanks! Nice meeting you!" Cho said as she quickly ran towards the stadium. As she walks away Yuno walks towards the other direction looking back at Cho, with a sad expression.
"Don't mention it, Faulin"
