At that point, I think we were already at our limit with all those idiots, but every time we talked with my mom on video chat, we tried to put on the best faces as we could, because Louisa was sick, and the last thing we wanted to do was worry them; I felt like I couldn't do anything to her that was low enough like what Yasmine had done to me. At the school, I just blocked everyone, even those who didn't make fun of me, like Demetri or Eli, (they try to "supported" me from a respectable distance), but especially with Sam, because she was the one I had closest to me all the time, I didn't want to see her even when I went to get the mail, or when I took out the trash, or when I took Jackie out, not to mention when the other two "plastic flowers" came to pick her up in their new little toys. And even with all that, she didn't understand that I really didn't want to have to listen her or read her useless apology messages. I believed that the only way I could forgive those three was for all of them to ask for forgiveness as they should.
When I saw them in the hallway, I would pretend to be distracted, gently bump my shoulder with one of them, then apologize with my most sincere "sorry" (although with my contemptuous face) and get out of there. I tried to stay relatively calm for a couple of days, until I saw the Yasmine's new work of art on Friday' night on my phone, while I was having dinner with my dad and Jackie:
-Oh, for God sake!-.
-At least this time you didn't call her bitch-. I just looked at him with my frustrated face, and he showed me the screen of his phone, just to confirm that we were both seeing the same thing, that girl Aisha eating at the school halloween' dance, like everyone else, but it was clear that Yasmine couldn't allow something like this to happen without making fun of her, and had to give her a pig's nose and ears. I was about to explode, maybe she thought that stupid meme of mine was going to be forgotten too quickly.
-Wait, how do you know this is coming from her?-.
-It is signed by her with her lipstick-.
-Girls-, he whispered. The truth is that I didn't know much about Aisha, (I had been so busy blocking all those idiots, that I forgot how to try to make some new friends) but from what I had heard at school, she was only another rich girl, although she has not yet been completely ruined, like others, the saddest part is that I have also heard that she had been a childhood friend of Sam's, you could even smell that betrayal.
-How can it be that even teachers can see this crap and do absolutely nothing?.
-Ann...-. my father began to say with his warning tone, but I was not willing to continue letting myself be intimidated. Finally I just sighed.
-First of all, darling, I'm sure that the other teachers have no idea about this kind of things-. He said although I think he got my point across, I doubt anyone in a place like that school would really feel like doing something against that girl, apart from making some talk in the cafeteria that everyone would ignore. As soon as I realized was looking at, I looked at my father with some suspicions.
-That guy, Demetri, hacked his class' network so he could give me the full access-.
-Why did he do something like that?-.
-Because I promised him some extra points...-.
My look didn't change at all, so he added:
-...To see if anyone else started doing more stupid things about my girl-. that made me smile a little, but deep down I was still very angry.
-Dad...- I just looked at some old photos in our small altar and wondered what kind of advice they would give me in a situation like this one.
-What?-.
-Do you think that... I can do something?-. He stopped eating and meditated on what I asked him for a second.
-Honey, I am really happy that you want to defend yourself and your friends, that's one of the most important reasons why I went to the Air Force, but, I feel like you should think about it very carefully first.
-Should I think... about what?-.
-in what you are going to do with them-. He looked up and told me:
-You just remember that "ambition without knowledge...-.
-...It's like a boat in dry land", I know, fine, father-.
-Yeah, that's a lesson your mother has taught me, in a somewhat painful way-.
My phone started to vibrate because of all the new comments on Yasmine's post, I decided to ignore them and speak louder than that insignificant buzz.
-You know? I'm super glad I didn't go to that stupid dance and that I stayed with all my boys- I said, stroking Jackie's head.
-Why don't we go on the couch and watch Miss Katniss Everdeen on our television, baby?-. Jackie barked excitedly.
-But, first you have to help me pick up the dishes from the table-.
-Father, you are really ruining my moment of feminist empowerment-. I started to complain.
-Honey, if you want to be a really good feminist you have to do everything like I do-.
-Alright-. There was no point in arguing at that point, I told Jackie to save me a little seat, and I just started to pick up the glasses.
-I have some good news for you, I received a notification...-.
-a notification?-.
-Yes, even if you don't believe it, I receive notifications from time to time, anyway, it's from a new yoga class, "Love is here to namaste"-. He said putting his hands together. I hadn't done anything related to yoga in a while, even before we left Boston.
-Why are you receiving notifications about yoga classes?-.
-I just felt a little guilty when I took over that extra room, so I decided to find something for you to do outside the house and this is the safest thing I found, I know it's not the same as doing yoga with your mom, but it will keep you busy with something productive, Maybe it makes you feel a little closer to them-.
-Maybe...-.
-Great-.
Dad was right, sooner or later I should get out of there to do something entirely recreational, and if parties at that time were not a good option, I had nothing to lose with a class of yoga.
At school, no one asked me where they could get the best weed in the town anymore, I just heard them making some stupid piggy noises when Aisha walked by; I felt very bad, I tried to approach her a couple of times when we were in the lockers but it was clear that, like me, she blocked herself and didn't want to talk to anyone at all.
Once I entered the bathroom and there was Sam alone, it seemed very strange not to see her with the other two, I assumed that maybe they were inside the cubicles, so I hurried to do what I had to do before Yasmine showed up in there. I don't think I could have avoided them forever.
I took off my headphones and Sam started talking to me:
-Ann...-.
-Samantha-. I said trying to sound more tough that i was usually.
-Look, I'm really so sorry, I...-. and she was suddenly silent, and I could hear a door open, I thought it was one of the cubicle doors, but it was just Aisha entering the bathroom while she was wiping away some tears.
Sam started apologizing to her too.
-Aisha... I...-. but Aisha only went into the first closest cubicle and closed the metal door with a lock. Sam just covered her face with her hands, I could see that she was really sorry, so I finally tried to calm my anger against her and I dared to say something to break the tension in the environment a little.
-You can't blame her, I thought she was your friend-.
-I know, but...- You could see in her eyes that she didn't know how to continue.
-I swear to God that I never imagined that Yasmine could do something like what she did to you-.
I was just listening to her.
-Had she done anything like this before?-.
-Maybe... a couple of times-. I was trying to understand her and everything she was telling me, but my understanding ended with that phrase.
-But they were just little jokes so that we could all have a little fun-.
-There's no fun when it's all against one-.
-It was never my intention, I didn't want to...-.
-That's where the problem is, sweetheart, all evil needs to happen is for good people to do absolutely nothing, see you later-. I said as I put my headphones back on.
-I'm sorry-. She said as the bathroom door closed behind me.
