CHAPTER 282
Thorne poked his head into the back of the cockpit and said, "we're leaving in ten."
In the copilot chair he saw the left shoulder of a man supporting an arm that was branched out in front of him. The hand suspended delicately before his face, and from the fingers a silver pocket watch dangled by a sturdy chain. Thorne could hear it ticking, and he observed as the man's face reflected across the watch crystal. Likewise the man in the copilot chair eyed Thorne through the watch crystal.
In the pilot's seat Thorne saw the edge of another person's right shoulder. The arm trailed down into their lap where the hand cradled an oversized mug of coffee. The brew, which had cooled to just above room temperature, went up and disappeared in a haste of gulps. The mug soon resided back in the person's lap.
From the pilot's chair a woman's voice said, "ten-four."
Thorne's eyes shifted back to the copilot seat where the man with the pocket watch was still staring at him through the reflection in the crystal. A moment later the watch clapped shut and retreated to an unseen pocket.
"Ok," Thorne said, and he went to go join Smith in the cockpit of the second Chinook.
