CHAPTER 288
Dianna, Kyra, and Seth were huddled around Bryce. It was hard to tell whether or not he was conscious. His breathing was very labored, and he went in and out of moaning incoherently. Kyra put her hand on his head and tried to comfort him, but she wasn't even sure if he knew she was there.
"Shh." Kyra stroked his forehead. She turned to Dr. Johnson and said, "His skin is burning hot."
Dianna bit her lip and nodded.
Seth watched with his arms crossed. He paced a little, then paused, then paced a little more. Even before he came to Isla Sorna he was no stranger to death, and this situation was feeling all too familiar to him.
He recalled how his father had died as the result of a car accident, but he had not been killed on impact. His body was alive, but his brain was more or less dead. Although Seth had stood and watched his father breathing, there was nothing in the world he could have done to save him or even to communicate with him one last time.
It was much like now, only Seth was watching Kyra go through it instead. He already knew there wasn't anything he could say or do now to make the situation any easier, so he just stood, and watched, and sometimes paced.
Somewhere in Seth's mind he had a growing sense that he might be turning numb to death and tragedy. The untimely passing of his father was a foundation for the force feeding of hardship he now endured. He didn't know if it was a good thing. Was he developing a strength or simply turning cold inside?
He would have dwelled on it more, but the jungle stirred and drew his attention. It drew everyone's attention.
