Chapter 43: The Scapegoat Prince
Time…
An unknowable concept that is measured yet seldom fully understood.
Most people believe it is like a river. How it is somehow fluid and flows in varying pathways yet at the same time, can only move forward in one intended direction. Or even seeing it as an ocean within a storm with how unstable and chaotic it can be. Others, however, believe it's grains of sand within an hourglass where it's truly vast in both the past and future while the present is ever so brief. And a crystalized representation being a clock, with the vast gears and pins to help show every passing hour, every minute, every second; whether it is to help represent the passage of life and mortality.
Many sayings make such talk about time being both true and false. How it's impossible to master, too complicated or seemingly insignificant in the grand scale of reality. How it matters more to the living than the dead. So on and so forth.
After all, it's one of the great fundamental concepts of, well, everything.
But enough of such talk for the time being. For now, let's focus elsewhere. Somewhere that is more relevant to the topic in question.
Roxas groaned and stirred awake. In the process, he felt nudges and scrapes against his face.
*Hiss*
Bahamut was trying to wake him up. He kept nibbling, headbutting and lightly "scratching" at his owner. After a quick jump on his forehead, the Nobody jerked, the little dragon slipping off the blond.
"Alright, alright," Roxas mutters out. "I'm getting up."
It was slow and straining, due to his previous fight with Vanitas. It was as if his body demanded further rest in order to recover. Sadly he was against such desire at this point in time.
It was at this point that Roxas saw the desert environment, reminding him of Agrabah.
"I've got a feeling I'm in another world." He says to himself. He looks around further and sees Tyene some distance away, making him feel a tad more relaxed. "At least she's safe."
But were the others?
Worry welled up inside of his being on this prospect. Were they in safe lands? Familiar lands? Or were they lost to the darkness?
"Worrying about such things now is the least of your concerns."
Hearing the unfamiliar voice, Roxas whirled around and found its source.
The new arrival was a young man with silvery white hair in a frazzled lanky style. Formally dressed in a white Victorian, steampunk attire with a black and gray striped shirt lay underneath the styled jacket. His black tie hung loosely around his neck as he made a brief adjustment to his monocle with his leather gloves. And hanging by his waist by a chain was a pocket watch.
Roxas was now back on his feet, a wary stare with a ready stance in place. "Who are you?"
"You may refer to me as Aeon." The white-suited man raised a hand. "Calm yourself, young one. I mean you no harm. I was waiting for you to wake up, Roxas."
No. XIII wasn't entirely convinced yet relaxed slightly, all the same, keeping his hands ready to call for his Keyblades.
"You know me?" He warily asked.
"Given my line of work, it is imperative that I know much if not all I come across." Aeon enigmatically said.
"Oh yeah?" Roxas eyed him analytically. "And what line of work would that be?"
"One far too complicated to explain and one that has aggrieved far too many headaches."
"...Why are you here?"
"To direct you to the next part of your journey, even if it's so very small. Of course, you won't be contacting anyone without this."
Roxas looked at Aeon, who now held the box containing the Carpathian mirror shards in one hand and Bahamut in the other. And dangling from said hand were a pair of charms dangling off their stringed bands.
Looking back to himself, Roxas saw the little dragon was no longer on him but somehow in the man's grasp. He opened his coat and patted his chest and felt the absence of his summoning charms for Ifrit and Chocho. Putting such questions aside of their sudden relocation, the Keybearer growls out his demand, calling forth his Keyblades. "Give them back!"
Aeon raised both of his occupied hands, making Roxas falter. "Not until you resolve the issue in this world. It is a serious matter which requires aid from a Keybearer such as yourself."
"What are you talking about?"
"You'll know in due time. Though if you are wondering what it is I do," Aeon held up his stopwatch and tapped on it and it was then did Roxas realize something he had completely missed.
All around him, the entire area was frozen, unmoving… still… No sounds could be heard. No breeze felt at all as opposed to earlier. He wasn't even feeling any form of heat on his face at all.
Almost as if it were frozen… in…
"Time?" Roxas murmured, looking at Aeon in shock now. "Are you… doing this?"
"I am a Guardian of Time, Roxas," Aeon stated with a grave expression. "This world just so happens to fall into my jurisdiction and if action is not taken, grave consequences will reverberate across the cosmos and time itself. I've already got my hands full as is so this is something I ask of you. Nay, apologies, plead, demand with you if I must."
Roxas was put off by this yet opted to listen, seeing the look in Aeon's eyes.
"What do you need me to do?"
"Prevent disaster." Aeon plainly stated.
"Mind elaborating?" Roxas found himself wryly asking.
"Sorry, but spoilers."
"...Can't you at least give back my property?"
Aeon wagged his finger, causing the charms, the box containing his mirror and Bahamut disappearing with a flick of his wrist. "Not until your task is complete."
The Nobody glared now, angrily gritting his teeth. "That's such bullshit."
"I do not doubt your character, Roxas, but I am one who must always have some leverage into account."
The blond teen glared hotly at the man who simply bowed apologetically. "I greatly recommend you go to the city." Aeon stated, pointing in a particular direction, making Roxas shake his head.
"What city?"
In a blink of an eye, Aeon was gone.
"Dammit." Roxas stomped on the ground, dismissing his Keyblades soon after.
"Mmm."
It was only then that Roxas remembered Tyene's presence, rushing over to her. He saw she appeared unharmed and her Keyblade still within her grasp.
"Tyene," he says to her prone form. "Tyene, you need to get up."
Slowly opening her eyes, Tyene eventually notices Roxas' kneeling form before her.
"Roxas…?" Came her unsure response.
"I'm here, Tyene." He holds out his hand. "Let me help you up."
Taking hold, she was hoisted up by her lover and kept steady as she was regaining her balance while using her Missing Ache Keyblade for additional help. It was from there she inspected their present surroundings.
As of this, Roxas saw a bit of curiosity and familiarity in her eyes as if trying to pinpoint their present location.
"Where in Dorne are we?" Her loud mutter came.
"We ain't there, that's for sure." No. XIII corrected with a narrowed gaze, looking around.
This got a queer look from Tyene, having her break her hold on Roxas in order to walk.
Being cautious, he stayed relatively close to her in case of anything.
"If this isn't Done then-" Tyene trailed off, upon walking past a dune she saw a heavily fortressed city in the distance. Not to mention with signs of an army seen over yonder. Roxas joined her side, spotting the city a moment later.
'Was this the city Aeon was talking about?' Thought the Nobody.
"Are… Are we in Essos?" Asks the Sand Snake, not recognizing the city. She had been all over Dorne with her family and had seen practically all the cities, palaces and fortresses owned by the houses sworn to the Martells.
And she had never seen one like this.
Roxas only shook his head, shooting a sympathetic and apologetic look at his lover. "What I can tell you now, Tyene, is that we're a long, long way from your home."
Within the sandy dunes and outside of the invading city, Tyene Sand looked back at Roxas with many questions on her mind.
To begin with-
"What do you mean we're a long way from home?"
Looking at Tyene, Roxas gave her a tired sigh. "It is what it sounds like."
He got a flat, annoyed look in response. "But I don't know what you're talking about at all."
"You will." Roxas assured. "Eventually."
"Roxas." She snipped irritably. "Must you be so mysterious?"
"Ah, but didn't you like that about me from the start?" Roxas teased, getting an annoyed smile out of her.
They halted at the sound of hundreds, if not thousands of screaming men, charging headfirst to the fortified city.
The army was heading to the right side, swarming inside with battle being heard following suit.
"Seven Hells." Tyene murmured, troubled by what she was seeing.
She had seen death and conflict before but not a full-blown battle such as this.
'A city, huh?' Roxas internally mused. There weren't any other cities within the vicinity, so it wasn't that much of an educated guess to believe that this was where Aeon directed him. "We best get moving."
"Yes, we should." The Dornish girl made to move elsewhere, however… "Roxas, why are you moving there?" He didn't answer her query. "Shouldn't we be going away from the city when it's being invaded?"
"I know, but we need to see what's exactly happening."
Before Tyene could refute it, Roxas already took off. This got an annoyed groan out of her as she was forced to follow and catch up.
'I'll be getting those answers from you, I swear.' She internally grumbled.
As Tyene and Roxas head over to the invading city, the initial focus moves away from the pair. A torrent of sand swept all around as a unique-looking hourglass came from below. Golden yellow grains swirled all over with the substance started to form a name in front of the hourglass…
A beautifully decorated dagger slammed into the center, the shape of the dagger serving as a letter with dunes of sand swirling around it until they coalesced into forming the words…
Desert of Time
It was rather difficult at first, given the relative flow of people. But upon passing through the fortressed city with the gate wide open, the pair of Keyblade wielders saw the chaos unfolding.
The side that was the invading army was sweeping through the city with ease, with many of its defenders either being caught off guard, overwhelmed or beaten in an instant. Some had put up a brave fight yet it mattered little as the numbers were just too much.
They saw many people, either unconscious or dead or being taken away. It was hard for the Keybearers to tell who were the invaders and who were the defenders respectively, given armor and clothing were hard to know right away. Even then, there was so much more where it was hard to comprehend all around and act accordingly on who to help against the other.
Seeing this happen, it felt like a nightmare. Watching a city that was ransacked and destroyed reminded her much of the stories told of the sacking of King's Landing.
'Was this how it was like for you, Elia?' Tyene thought of her deceased aunt.
So far, Tyene hasn't seen any rape or any other nefarious acts in making similar comparisons to what occurred nearly eighteen years ago over at Westoros' capital. Even then, it was hard to watch.
The pair walked through the streets of this city, moving rather quickly as they'd rather not get swept up in the battle or caught up in any misunderstandings.
The Dornish girl bumped into her lover's back, realizing that he had stopped.
"Roxas?" She murmured, gazing at him and then seeing his eyes were elsewhere.
In a clearing, Roxas and Tyene saw a man kneeling on the ground near an unconscious man. In his hand was a unique dagger.
Upon taking a closer look, Tyene thought this person was a salty Dornishman with his skin tone and features. Though she figured there was a splash of stoney here and there. Aside from this, he wore leathery, armored vestments, grieves, and vambraces to work more towards agility and maneuverability than protection. Strapped to his back was a pair of slim scimitars along with a few knives on his waist.
The Nobody observed the man for a moment, nodding to himself a moment later. Before Tyene could stop or say anything to him, he moved forward.
"Excuse me." Roxas called out as they walked over.
The man was momentarily startled, given he lost focus on his surroundings. It was due to him being so transfixed on the unique dagger.
"Who are you?" He asks with alarm in his tone, standing up with the newly acquired dagger pointed at them. "Not against us, are you?"
"No, not at all." Says the Keybearer before gesturing to himself and Tyene. "We were passing through and we wanted to know what was going on."
That answer appeared to completely bewilder the man.
"Passing by?" The man parroted, unclear if he heard correctly. "You're "passing by" at the end of a battle. Even coming into the city as it's occurring?"
"Er…" Roxas scratched the side of his head, glancing at his companion who gave him a shrug in response. "Yeah?"
The man looked suspicious yet amused at the same time, finding the pair rather intriguing.
"Quite the unusual time in passing through." He remarked.
"Not like we had any choice." Grumbled Tyene.
"Sorry about her. It's been… a long few days for the both of us. See, we were actually directed here." The blond apologizes before making introductions. "I'm Roxas and this is Tyene."
The man nodded as he got to his feet. "I am Dastan, a prince of Persia. And you're lucky you weren't here earlier." He motions to their surroundings. "As you can see, we just captured Alamut."
"Was there a reason why?" Asks the Sand Snake while wondering where this Persia was exactly. She had never heard of such a place in the world.
"Our spies informed us they were forging weapons and selling them to our enemies." This surprised Roxas and Tyene on this bit of news. Dastan even held up the one dagger he acquired moments ago, revealing a peculiar pattern on the unique blade with the glass handle and jeweled pommel. "That man over there had this on him. Quite the design, yes?"
"Is that one of the weapons they were forging?" Roxas asks.
"Must be, even if it looks old instead of freshly forged." Dastan comments. "Even then, this looks different from what my uncle showed my brothers and me. But first, mind telling me why you were "directed" to come here? Who sent you?"
Before Roxas or Tyene could respond, it was at this moment something transpired, something that two of the three recognized immediately.
Dark clouds, pools and vapors suddenly surrounded the group. From them did a number of Heartless appear such as Shadows, Darkballs, Bandits, Fat Bandits and Luna Bandits.
The Prince of Persia inhaled sharply, holding up the dagger he had acquired in one hand and pulling out one of his swords in the other. There were screams nearby from soldiers and civilians who quickly vacated the area.
"What are these?!" Dastan says in utter shock. "Demons?!"
Was attacking the Holy City of Alamut bringing a curse upon them like many said before? Is this the repercussion of their invasion?!
"You can say that." Says Tyene tensely.
"We'll handle them, Dastan." Roxas includes. "Stay back."
In an instant, Roxas and Tyene magically drew out their Keyblades.
It took a quick second for the blonde Nobody to realize what she did. "Huh, you're getting better at that."
Tyene gives her lover a smirk. "I've learned from the best."
The pair moved quickly, clashing their weapons against the Heartless and knocking some of them back in the process.
Dastan looked on in brief wonder. 'So brave to easily fight such creatures.'
He watched in awe at Roxas going into a corkscrew, slicing and destroying several Heartless around him. Glancing over to Tyene, Dastan was equally as amazed at seeing a girl of her size fearlessly charge at creatures and beasts larger than her and so quickly did she dispatch them.
The Prince had his suspicions of these two yet in an instant, here they were fighting off these demons whilst also protecting him.
What kind of man would he be to stand back and let others fight for him?
With a decision in mind, the Persian strapped the one dagger in hand into his belt, drew out his other sword and joined the fray.
Dastan ran at a nearby crate, using it as a boost to jump into the air and falling into a Luna Bandit, his swords getting rammed through its chest. It poofed out of existence, startling the Prince momentarily when he heard his name called out by Roxas. He turned around in time to hastily throw up his swords just as a spinning Bandit came straight at him, the spinning blade colliding repeatedly against his with sparks flying from each strike.
He grunted, feeling his arms strain from holding back this new foe when he stumbled back, surprised slightly at the sudden absence. He almost fell over had it not been for Roxas grabbing his collar and keeping him from falling.
Dastan released a grateful laugh, Roxas shooting him a small smirk, releasing him and returned to fighting these strange creatures.
He stared in awe at how skilled the teen was when he was brought back to reality by a Darkball violently jerking about, striking the Prince in the back.
"Argh!" Dastan cried out, feeling a pain he had never experienced before.
"Dastan!" Tyene came by and struck the Darkball out of existence, turning to him a moment later. "Hold on, I'm not as well versed as Roxas is but I've been practicing."
"What are you-?"
"Cure."
Green leaves and ethereal energy suddenly appeared and blanketed the Prince and the pain he had felt had vanished in an instant.
The man's eyes widened considerably, looking up at Tyene in utter disbelief.
"Wh-wha-that… What was that?!" Dastan exclaimed.
Tyene smirked at him, holding out her hand. "Magic."
Dastan didn't respond at first, wordlessly taking Tyene's hand and being hoisted back up.
"Focus up." Tyene said, snapping her fingers in front of his face. "This fight's not over."
As she said this, Roxas' Keyblades flew by them both, cleaving through several Heartless when they flashed out of the air and back into the hands of their wielder.
Dastan could only stare again when Tyene tapped him on the side of his head in an admonishing manner.
"Hey, focus, the fight's not over." She stated, rushing back into the fray.
The Prince shook his head, clenching his swords tightly and ran to help them.
He struggled slightly to keep up with the pair, having been already coming down from the adrenaline of battle along with how the duo appeared to be faster, stronger, far more skilled and far better suited to taking on these crazy new foes.
But they had already saved him twice from these demons and now they were displaying more of their awesome abilities and skills.
Some were magic but others looked outright superhuman. If they were, he wouldn't dispute it.
The way Roxas was moving around the area, taking out Heartless left, right and center was a sight to behold and though Tyene appeared to be the lesser of the two, she was no less of a menace to the enemies, using her nimble dexterity and smaller frame to get around and take out the dark creatures.
It really made Dastan reflect on his own skills. He was trained from the streets to be the best of warriors of Persia at this point and to him, it was clear as day these two eclipsed them all.
He felt his adrenaline kicking back up, clashing with a Lunar Bandit, his two swords trading sparks with the Heartless. Adjusting his grip into a backhanded one with his right hand, Dastan swatted aside the right sword of the Lunar Bandit with his left and stabbed his right into the head.
The Heartless jerked and vanished, making the Prince grin, spinning about to choose his next target.
He ran over to join Tyene in taking out the group of Heartless around her.
"Good thing you aren't from this city or else I'd be in trouble." Says Dastan before he notices a Heartless coming at Tyene from behind. "Look out!" He threw his sword like a javelin, impaling the Heartless and destroying it.
"Thanks." Tyene's eyes shift slightly as she casts Fire and destroys a Heartless about to attack Dastan in a similar manner as her moments prior. "Now we're even."
"Guess we are." He murmured, still in awe at the sight of magic being used so freely.
Roxas jumped into the air, throwing his Keyblades up.
In an instant, he glowed a bright light and shot a beam from his Keyblades which turned into pillars of light that rained down around them.
They struck the ground, hitting the remaining Heartless, kicking up dirt.
Dastan covered his eyes, coughing slightly and waved his hands around to try to send it away. When he opened his eyes again, they widened at the sight before him.
With the dust relatively settled, no more Heartless were present.
"Unbelievable." The Prince murmured.
"That's not even half of what he could do." Tyene teased.
"Are there more?" Came Dastan's query as he looked about. "Are they gone?"
"They come and go." Was Roxas' vague response as his and Tyene's Keyblades disappeared in motes of light. "But for now, yes."
"And for now, you're safe along with everyone else." Tyene includes.
"Right…" Dastan murmured. He was staring at the two in complete disbelief and wonder, trying to wrap his mind around what just-
"Prince Dastan!"
The three turned to see a man with dark long hair in armor running over. To Tyene, she thought he had the characteristics of a sandy Dornishman.
Dastan addressed the new arrival. "Bis, what's going on?"
"Our men are surrounding the palace. You are expected to-" Bis finally took notice of Roxas and Tyene, slightly unsure of what to make of them. "Who are they? Are they allies to the Alamutians?"
"They're just a pair of young travelers. But they've proved to me to be allies." Dastan responds to his friend. "Tell me, is the battle over?"
At that moment, they heard horns in the air.
"What was that?" Tyene asked.
"They are taking the palace." Says Dastan. "The fight for Alamut is over."
Bis pats the prince on the shoulder. "Come, let's go to your brothers."
The Prince was about to move forward when he stopped and turned back to the two Keyblade wielders. It took him a moment to think about it but he nodded to himself and gave them a friendly look. "Only if our new allies of Persia come along."
Surprise momentarily washed over Roxas and Tyene with the former saying, "Wait, what? You want us to come with you?"
Dastan gives the pair a reassuring smile, going over to clap Roxas on the shoulder. "Once my brothers hear what you're capable of, they'll gladly welcome you."
"Your uncle Nizam may say otherwise." Was Bis' statement, earning a brief shrug from Dastan.
"I vouch for them." The Prince declared. "They helped me without thought and have not even asked for compensation or reward."
"Well, thank you." Said Tyene pleasantly.
Dastan gestured his head in the direction of the main palace of Alamut. "Now, come. We mustn't keep 'em waiting."
As Bis and Dustan went on ahead, Roxas made to follow but was pulled back slightly by Tyene.
He glanced at her inquisitively, raising a brow at her intense gaze.
"What?" He softly said.
"You have a lot to answer for." Tyene pointedly said. "You still haven't explained just where we are right now. You said this isn't Dorne. Are we in Essos?"
Roxas winced, closing his left eye and gave her an apologetic look.
"No, not Essos, nowhere near that."
"What?" Tyene murmured in bewilderment. "Then… what… are we… are we in Sothoryos?"
There was an alarm to her confused tone. She had heard of the southern continent and all she had learned about it was that it was an apparent death trap. Who knows what may lie beyond its relatively well-known, but dangerous borders.
Roxas shook his head, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Look, Tyene, it's way more crazy and far more complicated than you think. And it's not something I can tell you here and now. What I want to tell you is best in private."
Well now Tyene was more curious than ever but she opted to trust Roxas with this, nodding at him. She quickly kissed him, surprising him, pulling back with a coy smile.
"Our promise." She teased. "Also, I needed that. After what happened in King's Landing."
Roxas sighed, giving her a strained smile. "I'm just glad you're ok."
"Roxas~" She jokingly whined. "If it weren't for where we were, I'd pounce on you right now."
"You really have no self-control, do you?" He blandly retorted, it being quite obvious how much she took from her father.
"Only when it comes to you." She cooed, kissing his cheek again before jogging to catch up to Dastan and Bis. "Come on."
It took some time navigating through Alamut's streets but the group was able to make their way to the palace and was soon guided by some Persian guards to a ceremonial room at a high off tower.
Upon arrival, the group had to make their way through the assembled soldiers and saw two men in armor and a bald elderly man approach a kneeling woman in white ornate robes covering her face.
"Silly songs and scented smoke could do little for you now." Said the one fully decked out in armor from head to foot after knocking a pot of incense away.
It was at this point that the white-robed woman quickly drew a dagger and poised to stab the man when the bald elderly man swiftly grasped her wrist and prevented the near-fatal stabbing.
"I think you'll find there's more to her than that, eh, Garsiv?" The bald man teases him as he puts pressure on the wrist, making the woman let go of the dagger and have it clatter on the floor.
"Nice reflex." Tyene approvingly said.
Dastan smiles a little. "My uncle Nizam fought alongside my father for years. He's used to this sort of situation." He whispers to the Sand Snake.
"Same with my father." Was her response.
They soon see another man approach the woman in white. For Dastan, he quickly realized it was his eldest brother Tus. He was a bit haggard and a tad bloodied, no doubt due to the fighting that occurred since the start of this conflict.
Using the tip of his sword, Tus carefully pushes back the ornate hood to reveal the woman's beautiful face with long black hair framing her face. And the jewels braided into her locks of hair made many present astounded by her beauty.
"Well, I'll be." Mutters Roxas, seemingly mesmerized by her.
The Dornish girl could be similar in agreement upon seeing the woman's appearance. She reminded Tyene of her cousin Arianne.
Of course, she ended her thoughts quickly, looked over to the blonde Nobody and whispered to him. "She's not as beautiful as I, yes?"
Her lover looks back at her with a teasing smile. "You're better."
Tyene gave him a saucy smile and pecked his cheek. "Good answer. Don't want Sansa and Myrcella hearing about this too, do you?"
Roxas gave her a flat look, about to respond when they heard the eldest brother of Dastan speak up.
"So for once, the stories are true about you, Tamina of Alamut." The one comment Tus made caused the surrounding soldiers to lightly laugh.
However, it was silenced soon after when Nizam spoke up. "We know you secretly build weapons for enemies of Persia." This caused the identified Tamina to turn around in confusion. "Now show us where."
"We have no such forges here." Tamina retorted defensively. "And what weapons we have you overcame."
"Our spy says differently." Interjected Garsiv. "You can save a lot of pain if-"
"All the pain in the world will not help you find something that does not exist." Came Tamina's interruption.
"Spoken like one wise enough to consider a political solution," Tus says, stepping towards her with an outstretched hand. "Join hands with Persia's future king."
Tamina appeared disgusted at the mere notion of such a thing. "I'll die first."
This caused the surrounding Persian soldiers to mockingly laugh.
Over with Roxas and Tyene, they couldn't help but groan with the latter feeling a bit nervous. Stories of her aunt's death surfaced in her mind, making her want to act accordingly.
However, she halts when she sees Tamina look their way. Well, more specifically towards Dastan for some reason.
"That can be arranged." Says Tus, motioning to a nearby soldier to raise his sword to end her.
Just as she was about to be struck down-
"Don't!" Tamina calls out, stopping the soldier's attack. She looks more toward Dastan, who finally notices this with curiosity on his face. He even turned to Roxas and Tyene wondering if she could perhaps be looking at them and when he looked back, her eyes were still locked firmly onto him.
'What is with her?' Dastan internally questioned. Her eyes were flickering between his face and his belt yet this went unnoticed by him. Even Nazim noticed and shared a similar reaction to his youngest nephew.
After some moments, the princess of Alamut looks back to Tus and finally speaks. "Prince Tus… Promise me, the people of Alamut will be treated with mercy."
Hearing her plea, Tus smiles, takes her hand and kisses it rather fiercely. "Done."
With this declaration, the surrounding Persian soldiers cheer as Prince Tus raises Tamina's arm to the air. And in the celebration, Dastan, Tyene and Roxas still notice Alamut's princess focusing on the youngest Persian prince.
"What is with her?" Tyene inquired with Dastan shrugging.
"I don't know." Dastan hummed. "Come on. Let my brothers handle things here. I'll introduce you to them in a better setting."
Sometime later, the two Keyblade wielders were resting at a raised tent as Dastan handed them some water with his friend Bis holding out some food.
"Here, eat and drink." Dastan offers kindly. "You can never have enough food and water."
"Thank you." Tyene says respectfully.
After taking a swig of water, Roxas finally questions something on his mind. "So what was that all about? Back in the tower, I mean?"
"Clearly Princess Tamina feared the life of her people, thus proposed a marriage alliance for their safety." Says the Dornish girl, popping a piece of food into her mouth. "Sometimes it happens more than you'd think with nobility."
Roxas shook his head. "I get that, but beforehand she said she'd rather die. What changed her mind so suddenly?"
Dastan had similar thoughts, thinking back to how she was looking at him when he entered the chamber but shook it off with a small chuckle. "If you knew my brother as much as I, you'd know why she'd say no in the first place."
"Oh thanks, Dastan." The others look over and see Tus walk over with a few guards following behind. "Am I that unbearable to be around?"
"Sometimes, brother." Dastan laughs, which Tus returns.
The crown prince then notices a pair of unfamiliar faces at Dastan's tent. "And who are they?"
"Roxas and Tyene." Says Dastan, quickly placing his hands on their shoulders in a friendly manner. "Got into some trouble near the gate during the battle. They saved my life."
"Really?" This intrigued Tus as he focused on the two Keybearers. "On behalf of Persia, you have my thanks and gratitude for saving my brother." He says, giving them a curt bow.
"You're welcome, your grace." Tyene said with a nod.
"Happy to be of service." Roxas adds in, mirroring Tyene's action.
"What are you two doing here anyways? You don't seem to be natives of Alamut." Asks Tus, taking note of their attire. Tyene appeared somewhat familiar to their lands but Roxas' black coat made him stand out.
Before Tyene had the chance to speak, Roxas beat her to it. "We're travelers and we just stumbled upon the battle."
The Dornish girl gave her lover a look as Tus smiled a little, taking their answers far better than Dastan had.
"Nomads, of course. I can respect that." The crown prince focuses back on his brother. "You know, they are calling you the Lion of Persia. It's all I've been hearing since coming to find you." He informs Dastan with a smile. "You've never excelled at following orders."
"The Lion of Persia… Interesting sobriquet." Tyene mutters.
Dastan shifted in his spot, looking down in slight shame now. "I have some explaining to do, Tus. I-"
"No. No." Tus laughs, wrapping his arm around his brother's neck. "No, you have some celebrating to do. Your actions guaranteed us victory."
"It was all of us, brother." Dastan stated, getting Tus to smile at his little brother before turning somewhat serious.
"There is, however, tradition. Since you took the honor of first assault, you owe me a gift of homage." Tus then notices the unique dagger tucked into his brother's waist. He withdraws and admires it in the sunlight. "A beautiful dagger."
"He delivered you the city and the princess." The brothers saw their uncle Nizam approach them. "I think that's homage enough."
"I suppose it is." Tus acquiesced, holding it out for his brother.
Dastan smiles, taking back the dagger in the process.
"First dispatches just arrived, my prince." Nizam hands over his eldest nephew a scroll. "Wonderful news. Your father has interrupted his prayers at the eastern palace to join us."
"No doubt to commend this on our great victory." Tus chuckles slightly as he reads the scroll's contents. He glances back at his brother. "Dastan, as a reward for helping, why don't you invite your new friends to the festivities?"
Overhearing this from nearby, Tyene and Roxas perked at this. Dastan notices their reaction and smiles. "I think that can be arranged." He turns over to Nizam. "Uncle, meet my new friends. They're astounding fighters."
The bald man eyed the pair, inspecting them in varying ways. "Well, then I suppose we're lucky you weren't against us." Was the man's comment.
Looking back at Nazim, Roxas couldn't help but feel some form of similarity between him and Tywin Lannister. The feeling the man gave along with the underlying ambition.
"Tell me, how did you come about meeting my reckless nephew here?" Nizam fondly said, making Dastan roll his eyes with a laugh.
"We sorta stumbled into it." Roxas admitted. "We were nomads visiting this city. During the attack."
"Passing by, if you would." Tyene quickly supplied.
"Passing by? In the midst of a battle?" Nizam couldn't help but say, making the off-worlders get a feeling of Deja-vu.
"Yeah, it's a bit complicated." Roxas admitted.
Dastan chuckled, patting them both on their backs.
"You can regale my family at a later time, my friends." The young Prince stated. "We have time before my father's arrival. How about you explore the city in the meantime? I fear our invasion may have prevented you from doing so."
"We would love to." Says Tyene, grasping Roxas' arm and dragging him away.
Seeing them off, Nizam mutters. "Very interesting individuals you picked up."
Dastan nods, turning to his uncle and brother. "You should've seen them. They used magic and wielded unusual swords the like I've never seen."
"Magic, you say?" Nizam repeated, now far more intrigued though the heir to Persia appeared to be skeptical.
"How so?" Tus asks.
"They resembled keys of all things."
Tus snorts. "Keys? Are you sure you got a look at them? Where are they anyway? I didn't see them on their person."
"They quite literally summoned them into their hands with flashes of light." Dastan excitedly said.
His brother scoffed in good humor. "Flashes of light? Come now Dastan, are you sure it wasn't the glare of the sun in your eyes?"
As the two brothers spoke, Nizam's eyes focused back at Dastan's new friends with further intrigue.
Having dragged Roxas to a relatively private area, Tyene decided to finally question her lover who was held off long enough.
"Alright, we've delayed enough time." Tyene looks at him square in the eyes. "Now tell me, Roxas, what in the Seven hells is going on? Where are we?"
Time passed as the city of Alamut was recovering from the recent attack. With the present Persian occupation, much change is seen on the horizon. The Alamutian's wonder what will happen to them now if their lives will ever be the same.
Amongst the city's occupants were the two Keyblade wielders with one of them informing the other the greater scope of reality. And it honestly wasn't what Roxas imagined when he needed to tell Tyene.
He originally thought of easing her into it, yet the awkward reveals one after another kept shattering her worldview. How many stories she grew up barely scratched the surface of the wider truth of an eventual apocalypse. How he was a Nobody and not entirely human. So on and so forth.
So with the present situation going on, Roxas informed Tyene of the further truths he'd been keeping from her. How only Ned Stark knew beforehand given his previous knowledge given to him years ago. How Cloud was also not from Westeros or even Essos, but from a World called Radiant Garden. And he could assume Ned informed Lewyn Martell, making him the second person in Westeros to the wider scope that their world was amongst countless others. That for the sanctity of the World Order, they had to keep the secret relatively contained.
To say that Tyene was blown away by the fact that she was no longer on her World was an understatement. It took her a good few minutes of silent processing. From there, she began asking if the many tales she's heard of him from passing of fantastical experiences of faraway places in other lands unknown to all… were in fact other worlds.
"You practically know this to be true by now after accepting for what I am." Her lover said to her to finish off the final truth he kept from her.
After some time of relative silence, the Dornish girl slowly accepts it.
"Other Worlds…" Tyene murmured, still trying to fully process this revelation, looking at their surroundings.
The people around them were not Dornish. Nor Westerosi. Not even from Essos or any other known continent on their planet. They were of a different World entirely. This World, whatever it may be. Persia, Alamut or whatever.
Tyene felt the sensation of an outer body experience, not fully feeling as though she was here and yet…
"How did… how did we…" She managed out.
"End up here?" Roxas finished for her, the Sand Snake nodding mutely. "That's a bit complicated but not uncommon. I've experienced it before… sorta."
"How?"
"Through Sora… I think… not sure if that counts. Plus other times." Roxas mused. "Of course with how we got here, we can thank Vanitas for that."
With this in mind, the two were finally reeling in with what occurred at the Sept of Baelor. Ned's mock trial and false confession. The chaos that led up to Cersei's death before Vanitas blasted them all away.
"Wait," Tyene worriedly said. "Then… what about Sansa? And Arya and Myrcella and Lord Stark?"
"Gendry and Nymeria were also there." Roxas said. "I did what I could to protect them but for now, I have no idea where they ended up."
"They weren't taken out by all that Darkness, were they?" She asked in concern.
Roxas shook his head, placing a hand on her shoulder. "I know I managed to reach Ned and his daughters with Gendry and Nymeria too. But Myrcella… I'm… not entirely sure. I wish I could see if they are alright."
A thought came to mind, recalling a factor to consider. "What about your mirror? The one you had in talking to Alucard?"
"Oh, I would most certainly use that… if Aeon didn't take it, my charms and Bahamut."
"...Who… And excuse me?"
Roxas' expression shifted into one of peeved irritation.
And this led to him informing her of what happened once waking up in this World. His brief meeting with this Aeon, who used Time manipulation in order to take his share of the Carpathian mirror shards along with the summoning charms and Bahamut without him knowing it.
Suffice to say, the Sand Snake was seething by the end of it.
"I swear, I'll punch this Aeon when I get the chance."
"Good luck with that."
"What… what about getting home?"
"That might be tricky." Roxas admitted. "For you at least."
Her anger was soon replaced with further confusion. "Huh? What do you mean?"
Roxas patted himself on the chest then tugged his right sleeve. "This coat here is one specially made to repel the Darkness whenever I use my Corridor, remember? There's a reason for it since the Darkness can be unstable and unpredictable and traveling through a Corridor of Darkness for someone who doesn't have something like this can be extremely dangerous. It may not happen but there is a serious chance that you could outright lose your heart and not come out the other end. I do not want to risk going through a corridor with me without this. Not after what you went through with me."
"Wait, but we got here because of the Darkness and you set up some type of protection, didn't you?" Tyene countered.
"That was honestly more of a reflex." Roxas stated looking down at his hands. "I don't fully know or understand how I did it. I just kept thinking to myself that I had to protect all of you. Keep you safe."
Tyene felt her heart warm at Roxas' words but shook off that feeling, focusing on what mattered to her.
"Can't… Can't you pull that off again?"
Roxas looked at her apologetically. "I doubt it'll work that effectively."
"...Then what now?"
The Nobody grunted, making an annoyed expression. "Do what Aeon wanted from me in being here. Only then will he return my things. We can find the others quicker after I contact Alucard for enough shards to send us over and all that."
This was all so complicated for her. She didn't know if it's all that simple or if there was more to consider. All she could do now was work out one thing at a time.
"But ya know," Roxas put on a small smile, holding out his hand to her. "For now, how 'bout we check this World out. Your first time out here and well, we've already helped out Dastan, who's a prince. Let's see what else we can do and learn here. And you can even bring back something for your family that no one else has."
An appreciative and also mischievous smile graces the Sand Snake's face. She'll have to work through the circumstances, especially with unique opportunities such as this.
Plus, the thought of bringing back a literal out of this world item back to her family in Dorne was too good of an opportunity to pass up.
After Roxas informed Tyene of their present circumstances, the pair explored the city, taking in the sites, speaking to the locals and the Persian occupying force, and hearing a number of tales from both sides.
From what the two learned from various Persian soldiers, they were in the city of Alamut. Within this desert empire, it is considered neutral, given it being sacred among other factors. That waging war against the city would have many others retaliate due to their alliance.
However, as Dastan stated to them earlier, a spy intercepted a caravan leaving Alamut transporting weapons and a promise of payment to a warlord who was greatly opposed to King Sharaman's rule. This also implied that Alamat was selling other weapons to many of Persia's other enemies.
With this evidence, the Persian army led by Prince Tus, had the right to invade.
However, this attack wasn't planned as they were originally ordered to subdue the Koshkhan army. Yet this was almost out of the way of Koshkha, something several Persian soldiers and many Alamutans stated.
After hearing all this, the duo now had their curiosity piqued.
When exploring the city, Roxas and Tyene saw many small businesses, booths, shops and all, but no weapons shop. They did find a number of smithies and blacksmiths, a few traders and merchants here and there with weapons but none that would serve as a grand size as implied to sell to foreign armies.
"This is strange." Roxas mutters. "Dastan and the Persians said Alamut was supplying weapons to their enemies."
Tyene nodded, seeing a meager and destroyed blacksmith booth nearby. "Yet no forges of that grand of scale to do so. Where would they be?"
"Could they be hidden somewhere? I mean, why wouldn't they be doing it in the open."
Tyene nods. "After all, the Persian spy stated they intercepted a shipment." Though she shook her head after. "But their princess said they have no such forges."
Roxas was now frowning, watching a Persian garrison pass by. "Something doesn't add up. We don't have a clearer picture of what's going on here."
Tyene released a small sigh. "I had hoped that all this deception and uncertainty was a Westerosi problem but it seems to be the law of the land… World…urgh, I have a headache."
Roxas placed a sympathetic hand on her shoulder. "Don't worry, it's not all bad. After all this is over and we find the rest of our lost friends, I'll take you to a world you'll absolutely love. No troubles or any of that stuff. Just a place with one of the best sunsets you'll ever experience."
Her expression brightened at that, cheeks slightly reddening at the thought of having a romantic moment with Roxas. "I'll hold you to that."
After spending some time exploring the city, the two Keybearers ran into Dastan as he was doing an apparent show for his men… by trying to run up a wall and falling on his back.
"Not your finest work, I see." Tyene comments as Dastan groans in pain.
"The third step is always the hardest." He laughs through the pain as the Persian soldiers make relative cheer at his expense.
"To some, it is." Says Roxas, helping the Persian prince get back onto his feet.
"Like you're one to talk." Tyene jabs in, giving him a playful stink eye.
Before Dastan could question about that, he notices Tus' arrival by horseback and climbing off his stead.
"Brother!" He joyfully exclaimed. "Brother! I was just telling my men how I got the gate open."
"And demonstrating it remarkably well." Says the crown prince as he embraces his brother. "Do you have a moment?"
"Has something happened?"
Tus nodded at him. "We've uncovered signs of tunnels on the eastern edge of the city. We think this is part of how the Alamutans were smuggling their weapons. I'm on my way there now."
"Oh, But you'll miss the banquet." Dastan bemoaned.
Tus clapped his shoulder. "You and Garsiv can handle father in my absence."
This got Dastan's further attention. "Father's here?"
Tus nods. "He arrived earlier today. Do you have a gift to honor him with?"
"Of course. Bis!" The young prince turns to his old friend, who was too busy drinking from a jug to respond. "...I believe I've misplaced it."
Tus snorts. "Luckily I knew this would happen." He motions a servant to come forward with a cloth container. Tus opens it up and reveals an ornate robe to Dastan, Tyene and Roxas. "The prayer robe of Alamut's regent. The holiest in eastern lands. A gift the king will appreciate."
"Huh, looks wonderful." Roxas comments.
"It does, doesn't it?" The elder brother said with a smug smile.
"But would your father accept it?" Tyene questions.
"...It'll be the thought that counts." Tus says wearily. "Hopefully." He coughs into his hand. "You fought like a champion for me, Dastan. Glad to return the favor." He focuses towards the two Keybearers. "And you two, I know you're not from here, but I would like to offer you a job."
The aforementioned pair look at each other briefly before the Sand Snake speaks. "And what would that be?"
Tus looks up and points to the walkway above. Roxas, Tyene and Dastan saw Tamina being escorted by some Persian guards to somewhere else in the palace.
"A rare jewel. I ask your assistance in helping Dastan escort and present her to the king for me this evening."
"You sure you really want another wife, brother?" Dastan asked in amusement.
The two Keybearers did a double take at that with Roxas voicing the obvious. "Another wife?"
This was ignored as Tus focuses more on his brother. "Listen. A marriage to the princess assures me the loyalty of her people. Unbound to us, she's a dangerous liability." He then focuses on Roxas and Tyene. "And I need the help from you -a neutral party- so I know she can't get inside their heads and trick you all that well."
Tyene hums a little. "That makes some sense."
Tus focuses back towards Dastan. "But more than that, if father doesn't approve of our union, I want you to do what's necessary."
Knowing what his brother is implying, Dastan gives a small nod as he saw Tus walk away and leave the vicinity. Roxas and Tyene shared a look, one of troubled uncertainty. From what Tus was implying by "necessary"...
"Come on." Dastan rounded on the two with a wide smile. "I can introduce you to my father as well."
Arriving back at the palace, Dastan was cleaned up and presently wore something more appropriate for the upcoming banquet. Awaiting for Tamina's arrival, he glances over to his two guests.
Tyene wore an attire which resembled some Persian fighters with the airy leggings, boots and leathery vestments. Not to mention a number of items strapped to her person such as daggers. Aside from them, there was the amount of unusual accessories worn on her person.
As for Roxas…
"Why haven't you bothered changing, Roxas?" Dastan inquires.
Roxas glanced down at his black cloak and shrugged. "I'm more fine wearing this."
"You're not boiling in that, are you?"
"It's heat resistant." Roxas assured, patting his chest.
The Prince eyed the teen before shrugging. "If you say so."
"Don't worry about my beloved." Tyene states, hugging his arm from the side and leaning her head on his shoulder. "He's precautious and is rather stiff in certain areas."
"And why not you as well? I would've thought you'd wear a dress for the occasion."
"Oh, trust me, I would've. But as of late, I've felt the need to be ready for anything."
This didn't exactly sit well with Dastan, making him wonder why this was said. Anything about the matter was put aside when the nearby doors opened with Tamina stepping out.
He saw how beautiful she was with her present garments, being very ceremonial for the occasion. Sadly it was soured by the frown on her face.
Before she moved any farther, the Persian guards moved and boxed her in, earning a scowl in turn. Looking over, she saw Dastan, Roxas and Tyene. "So, I'm escorted by Prince Dastan, the Lion of Persia and a pair of children." This earned a look from the Keybearers. "Already corrupting your youth to be as vicious and savage as the rest of your ilk. If you think I'm too innocent to hurt them, you're wrong."
"Wow… quite the first impression." Tyene mutters.
"Quite the pleasure to meet you too. And for the record, princess, they're my friends." Dastan said, patting Roxas on the back. "I don't know if you've heard of such a concept being all prettied and attended to and all. It's something good to have these days when they enjoy your company."
"Burn." Roxas whispers.
Tyene giggles a little.
The group along with the Persian guards began walking down the corridor with the Alamutan princess speaking. "Must be wonderful winning such a claim for destroying such an innocent city."
"Of course." Says Dastan conversationally. "And allow me to offer that if punishing the enemies of my king is a crime, then it's one I'll gladly repeat."
"Then you are a true prince of Persia. Brutal, without honor." Came Tamina's insult.
"Don't make the mistake of thinking you know me, princess." Dastan states as they eventually made their way to a chamber.
"Or us, for that matter." Roxas added in.
"What's there to know?" Tamina all but growls out. "You two don't look Persian at all. You might as well be mercenaries-"
"They're not mercenaries, but nomads." Dastan defends his two guests. "Ones who saved my life from these dark creatures after coming into your city. Tell me, Princess, aside from being enemies of Persia, it would not surprise me that your city has dabbled in darker forces beyond human comprehension."
"Dark creatures?" Tamina parroted, now confused as to what he just said. "What in the world are you talking about?"
Dastan gave her an enigmatic look that served only to further frustrate and anger the princess. Tamina looked at Roxas and Tyene, the former looking ahead whilst the latter gave her an unimpressed deadpan that made the princess scoff.
Coming in front of a room with a pair of guards stationed, Dastan looks at one of them. "Wait here with her highness." He then turns back to Tamina. "If you can manage it, I suggest a hint of humility when you're presented to the king. For your own good."
As he was speaking to her, he didn't notice her eyes were trained towards the dagger on his belt. Several scenarios are forming in her head about it on what her next course of actions may be.
Upon leaving Tamina, Roxas makes a small comment. "Boy does she have some anger issues."
"What do you expect? She just lost her city and even her future in one day." Came Tyene's response. "I would be too if I or my family were in her position," her arm around her lover tightened soon after, "or something similar."
The blonde turned to her, reaching his hand towards hers and entangling their fingers. "Tyene, I'm still sorry for what happened."
She doesn't say anything, only squeezing the arm and hand a bit more.
Once entering the other room, Roxas and Tyene saw the banquet underway. The festivities and merriment went all around.
Approaching Nizam, Dastan sees King Sharaman was a bit relaxed and having a good time.
He recalled hearing commotion of his father's displeasure of them invading Alamut, not that he could blame him.
"I see you've eased father's anger, uncle."
"One day you'll have the pleasure of being the king's brother, Dastan." Nizam says back. "As long as you remember the most important duty, you should be fine."
"And what is this most important duty?" Roxas asks.
"Making sure his wine glass stays full." Nizam dryly said.
Dastan laughs alongside his uncle at the little joke. Tyene was similar in a way, but more recalling the idea with her father sometimes. As for Roxas, it made him think of Robert and earned no laugh in turn.
It was at this point did King Sharaman notice Dastan next to his brother, having him speak loud enough to halt the festivities. "I am told another of my sons has joined the ranks of great Persian warriors."
With the king's declaration, everyone applauds Dastan who approaches his father and hugs him.
"We missed you father."
"I was praying for you and your brothers, Dastan." Sharaman cups his son's face. "Family. The bond between brothers, that is the sword that defends our empire. And I pray that sword remains strong."
Hearing these words, Dastan slightly looked away and was awash with shame. "I was hoping my actions would spare our men and those of Alamut any unnecessary losses."
His father gave him an understanding gaze, leaning forward to give his son an expectant gaze.
"A good man would've done as you did, Dastan. Acting boldly and courageously to bring victory and spare lives. But a great man… A great man would've stopped the attack from happening at all. A great man would've stopped what he knew to be wrong, no matter who was ordering." The Persian king gave his youngest son a reassuring smile. "The boy I saw in that square, was capable of being more than just good, but of being great."
This caused Dastan to smile in the process, uplifting his spirits.
Hearing these words, Roxas' thoughts on Sharaman had elevated considerably.
As for Tyene, she could relate with the man's words with how family was truly important for her father. How strongly he feels towards them and being quite the mother hen, with how her mother jokingly says from time to time. Yet all that and more resonated with her, being something she'll no doubt appreciate more once reuniting with her family back in Westeros.
"Well, in the meantime, I have a gift for you." Says Dastan, gestures for Bis to come over with the gift in his arms.
Whilst the gift was brought over, the King chose to address the rest of those gathered in the hall.
"Some questioned the wisdom of my bringing a boy from the streets into my family." Sharaman says, waving his arm towards his son. "I saw a boy whose blood wasn't noble, but whose character was. A king in spirit."
This garnered quite a reaction from the two Keybearers upon hearing this as the surrounding crowd cheered. "He wasn't born royal?"
"I'm starting to like him a bit more now." Tyene adds in with a smile.
"Thank you, father." Dastan comes to Sharaman's side and gives him a side hug. "May I present the prayer rob of Alamut's regent."
With this, Bis opened up the gift to reveal the ornate robe. Seeing this, the king was hesitant at first, but complied as he took off his own robe in order to put on his new one. It looked well on him as those nearby clapped.
"What can I grant you in return?"
This got Dastan to call out to the one guard nearby to open the doors. Soon after, Princess Tamina came walking in with some Persian guards as her escort. Many in attendance bowed towards her as she went past them.
"May I present Princess Tamina of Alamut." Hearing the woman's name, Sharaman looked at his son quizzically. "Tus wishes to make a union with her people through marriage. It is my deepest wish that this win your approval."
Stepping aside, Dastan let his father inspect Alamut's princess.
"In all my travels, I have never looked upon a more beautiful city, your highness."
Instead of appreciating the Persian king's words, Tamina threw them back in his face with venom in her voice. "You should have seen it before your horde of camel-riding illiterates descended upon it."
This got a small wave of murmurs from those present.
With Sharaman, instead of being offended, he had a different reaction as he chuckled. "Clearly she will make a fine queen." The king began shifting in his spot as if being rather uncomfortable with a few things. "But Tus already has enough wives."
"I'm sorry, wives?" Roxas mutters in bewilderment. "How many does Tus have?"
The king walks over to his adopted son by this point. "You, Dastan, might take fewer chances if such a jewel waited in your chambers." He walks away, not seeing his son's questioning look as if he wasn't getting the joke. "The Princess of Alamut will be your first wife."
With the king's declaration, nearly everyone in attendance applauded. Others, however, were rather surprised and shocked.
"I did not see that coming."
"Me neither." Tyene then looks at the dumbfounded prince, tries and fails to contain her laughter on seeing his reaction. "What's wrong, Dastan? Afraid to get married?"
"Uh…" He dumbly responded.
Many in attendance laughed at the speechless response the Lion of Persia made; even the king himself.
"He plunges into a hundred foes without thought, but before marriage, he stands frozen with fear. And there are those who say he's not yet wise." Sharaman states with an amused smile.
This got more laughter from those around them.
Dastan sighs in embarrassment. "I need a drink."
Roxas gives him a pity pat on the back. "Probably for the best."
Suddenly, at that instant, a sizzling noise was heard.
"Is there food being cooked nearby?" Roxas asks aloud.
Dastan glanced at him. "No… It would be in the kitchens-"
They soon heard the king grunting in pain. Looking over, they reacted in horror when seeing the sizzling was coming from the king himself.
Sharaman was now screaming in agony as he tried to get the robe off himself. Several guards and even Garsiv rushed over to take it off, but couldn't as their hands were suddenly burned in the process.
"What the hell!?"
"God help us!" Nizam gasps in surprise. "The robe is poisoned!"
Dastan rushed in and could only watch in horror as his father was dying before him. "Somebody, help him!"
But it was too late as Sharaman laid motionless on the floor, resulting in utter chaos in the room.
"The robe Dastan gave him!" Garsiv accuses his brother. "He's the one!"
Dastan felt a cold sensation flood his being, paling at the accusation. "It-It was not me!"
"Seize the murderer!" Someone shouted.
All around them, chaos began to brew and sensing things were about to take a turn for the worse, No. XIII was the first to move.
Reacting quickly, Roxas grabbed Dastan by the shoulder and pulled him away. "We need to go, now!" He yelled at the Persian.
Dastan didn't want to but was forced to comply as Bis grabbed his other shoulder and moved him away from the Persian guards.
"Seize them!" Garsiv yells as the present guards came running in to capture the offenders.
Making their way to the balcony, Dastan fumbled slightly but was held back up by Roxas and Tyene, who had taken out the balcony guards moments prior by summoning and using her Keyblade. The Persian prince looked back and saw Bis block some of the guards with his knife.
"Bis!"
"Get to safety!" Bis yelled out to his friend.
Needing to assist on this matter, Roxas summoned his Keyblades and clashed with the guards.
During all this, Tamina had sought to flee on her own until seeing the summoned weapons, making her eyes widen in surprise. 'It can't be…' Acting quickly, Tamina grabbed a nearby urn and swung it hard and hit a guard in the face before rushing towards Tyene, Roxas and Dastan. "Follow me!"
Looking back once more, Dastan went to call out to Bis, only to look in added horror upon seeing the guards strike him down. "BIS!"
"Dastan!" Roxas yells out, blocking a coming blow from a nearby Persian guard.
"We need to move!" Tyene yells in turn.
Dastan was forced to relent and follow his other friends and surprisingly Tamina. Reaching the balcony's edge, the Persian prince was all but pulled as he and the others plummeted to the fountain below.
Coming out of the water, each was soaking wet. In the process, Dastan looked at Tamina in utter confusion. "What do you think you're doing?"
"I can get us out of here." Says Alamut's princess as they climbed out of the fountain. "You're all going to need my help."
"We'll believe that when we see it." Says Tyene.
Running to the stable yard, they scrambled to the horses with Dastan cutting the ropes. Quickly seeing what the prince was doing, Roxas quickly assisted him. Before long, all of the horses were set free as Dastan and Tamina got on one horse with Roxas and Tyene on another. With the ensuing chaos, Tamina had to guide their way out of the city and into the desert.
-Nightfall-
The dark, star lit sky blanketed the land with the cool air washing over any and all people traversing the desert.
At a campfire, Dastan was hunched over in front of the fire they had made, head down and fists clenching and unclenching as silent tears streamed down his face, grieving significant losses of both his father and best friend.
After some unknown amount of time not saying a thing, Tyene spoke. "I'm sorry for your loss, Dastan. I may not have lost a father but I know the feeling of losing someone you love dearly."
Dastan heard the sincerity in her voice and gave her a grateful, tearful smile.
"Thank you." The prince says to her. "I can't thank you and Roxas enough for helping us back there. I am forever in your debt."
The blonde Nobody wanted to say otherwise, but didn't want to hurt the grieving prince any further. All he could say, however, was to speak something else. "Dastan, what happened back there wasn't your fault."
Hearing this, Dastan gave a strained smile in response before his expression became somber and sorrowful. "I didn't murder my father. I didn't choose to give him that robe, my brother did. You were both there when Tus gave me that robe."
There was a beat of silence and Tyene broke it, squirming slightly.
"So… Tus is the reason he's dead." She murmured, giving the Prince a sympathetic expression.
In the Sand Snake's mind, she could only bemoan the similarities this situation had to Westerosi politics. The constant infighting between Houses and the infighting within the Houses themselves. Of how family was often its own worst enemy.
It pained and annoyed her to discover such practices even extended to Worlds beyond her own.
It was at this point did Tamina came to the realization. "And now he stands to become king."
All Dastan could do in response was give Alamut's princess a soft glare.
"Poisoning outfits is a thing?" Roxas couldn't help but ask, looking at the Sand Snake.
"It's… a complicated process," Tyene says to her lover, "but yes it is."
"...Do you know-?"
"Who do you think I learned it from?" Tyene knowingly said, making Roxas grunt at this.
"Right, stupid question."
"You have to believe me." Dastan almost pleaded. "I would never kill my father."
Roxas raised an assuring hand. "Relax Dastan, we already believe you."
"As do I." Tamina says, slowly walking past the Nobody and towards the prince.
As she got a bit too close for comfort, Dastan makes some admittance. "I promised my brother to kill you if he couldn't have you."
This earned a look from Roxas and a snort from Tyene.
"Well, the solution would be to kiss me, and then kill me." Says the princess, leaning in further.
This got Tyene's attention, realizing what Tamina's coming action would be. "Wait a second…"
"But I have another solution." She whispers, appearing to reach for the dagger on Dastan's waist. Realizing what her intentions are, he pushes her back, allowing her to grab his sword instead from the horse. "I kill you and your problems are solved!"
Lunging in, Tamina attempts to stab him when Roxas and Tyene appear and block her way.
"I'm starting to see why Dastan's people invaded your city." Tyene snipped.
"Stay out of this!" Tamina roars, swinging her sword. "This is none of your concern!" Her attack was blocked by the sudden appearance of Missing Ache in Tyene's hand as she held her back. Upon seeing it, Tamina could only gasp in utter surprise, all but confirming what she had seen back in the palace. "A Keyblade?! You have a Keyblade?!"
"You know what it is?" Asks the Dornish girl with Roxas thinking the same thing.
Dastan, meanwhile, was momentarily confused, but shoved such thoughts aside as he drew the dagger from his waist. "Stand down. This is your only warning."
Tamina, however, wouldn't listen as she raised her sword, ready to charge in to strike the Persian down. Tyene and Roxas stood before her and Dastan raised the dagger he had in hand. Subconsciously, without realizing what he had done, he adjusted his grip on the dagger and ended up pressing the jeweled pommel with his thumb, causing it to glow and releasing glowing golden sand. Golden markings appeared around the dagger, soon traveling upwards to encompass Dastan's right arm.
At that instance, Dastan notices something truly amiss as he sees himself and everything around in third person like some outer body experience. In mere moments, everything began rewinding all the way up to when Tamina tried to steal the dagger he presently held from him. And right after, he was shoved right back into his body.
Looking around in utter confusion, Dastan barely registers Tamina's words. "Well, the solution would be to kiss me, and then kill me."
"Wait a second…" He heard Tyene say.
"But I have a better solution." Tamina whispers, appearing to reach for the dagger on Dastan's waist. Realizing what her intentions are, he pushes her back, allowing her to grab his sword instead from the horse. "I kill you and your problems are solved!"
Lunging in, Tamina attempts to stab Dastan when Roxas and Tyene appear and block her way… just like before?
"I'm starting to see why Dastan's people invaded your city." Tyene snipped.
"Stay out of this!" Tamina roars, swinging her sword. "This is none of your concern!" Her attack was blocked by the sudden appearance of Oathkeeper in Roxas' hand as he held her back. Upon seeing it, Tamina could only gasp in utter surprise, all but confirming what she had seen back in the palace. "A Keyblade?! You have a Keyblade?!"
'What is going on here?' Thought Dastan. 'It was just like before… yet different.' He focuses back on the weapon in Roxas' hand and recalls the other one he had wielded earlier that day along with Tyene on both occurrences. 'What are Keyblades and why did they seem so important to Tamina?'
Looking back at the dagger, he pulled it from his waist and seemingly recalls a particular detail.
Seeing Dastan's present action, Tamina's eyes widen and yells out. "Don't!"
However, it was too late as Dastan pressed the jeweled pommel, causing everything to be rewound once more up to the point when Tamina was trying to come up to him.
"Did you see that?" Dastan suddenly asks.
"See what?" Asked Roxas, just before Tamina went to grab the sword from the horse.
In a sudden move, Dastan snatches her arm before it can go any further.
"Go for the sword again and I swear I'll have my friends bring out their Keyblades down on you." Dastan warned, now very much annoyed.
This got quite the reaction from the others present.
Tamina's eyes widen in utter shock, looking at Roxas and Tyene. "Keyblades?"
Tyene looked at the prince in confusion. "How do you know them?"
"What did you mean by 'again'?" Roxas adds in his own query.
Dastan didn't answer right away, only withdrawing the dagger from his waist and pressing the jewel pommel, only for nothing to happen.
Seeing this, Tamina only looked on in abject horror. "You used up all the sand!"
"What are you talking about?" Roxas spoke up.
Dastan took a moment to examine the dagger from all sides before focusing on the hourglass handle, eyeing Tamina a moment later. "Two times she tried to kill me. You both stopped her but each time was different when Tyene summoned her Keyblade to stop her the first go around before Roxas on the second."
"But how did you know what they are called?" The Sand Snake inquired.
"Because each time she suddenly knew what they were." Dastan then refocuses on the dagger and walks away from Tamina, who tried to follow but Roxas and Tyene got in her way. "Incredible. Releasing the sand… turns back time. And only the holder of the Dagger is aware what's happened." In doing so, the prince finally came to a realization. "They could perhaps go back and alter events, change time, and no one knows, but them."
"Wait… you mean… can it really happen?" Tyene says in utter wonderment.
"That dagger can do time travel?" Roxas asks before a thought came to mind. "How far though?"
These questions and more swam in Dastan's mind before making a demand from Alamut's princess. "What do you know?"
All he got in return was Tamina's harsh glare. "You destroyed my city. Killed my people."
It was at this point did Dastan turn to the Keyblade wielders with a sinking feeling welling up inside his chest. "Tell me, when you explored the city, did either of you see any forges in the city?"
Both took a moment to ponder his words.
"Not really." The Daughter of Oberyn remarked.
"Closest we saw were for jewels and accessories. Nothing for weapons." Roxas tacked on.
Another realization soon came upon Dastan as he looked back at the dagger. "Our invasion wasn't about weapon forges, it was about this."
There was an intense pressure that came over the group as Roxas idly took the dagger out of Dastan's hands, examining the blade himself. It took him a moment but the Nobody soon sensed a latent power emanating from the dagger.
"If this dagger got into the wrong hands, who knows what may happen." Roxas says with dread washing over him. 'Was this what Aeon was talking about?'
A thought soon came into Tyene's head, recalling something from earlier. "Wait, didn't your brother want that dagger as tribute?"
Dastan felt a cold sweat now. "He did. I didn't think anything of it, but now I see. With it, he could change anything. He could change the course of a critical moment in battle. He could foresee the blade of a rival… He wouldn't just be the king, he'd be the most powerful ruler Persia has ever seen. Greater than my father. Perhaps even the world over." He took the dagger back from Roxas and held it up as his eyes and those of the Keybearers widened further on realization. "All because of this dagger!"
"Seven Hells." Tyene murmured, feeling her mind imploding for what was the second time today.
The notion of other Worlds was one thing but… time manipulation? The ability to go back and alter events, see the future and dictate the outcome?
Such a thing was a deadly desire that could lead to untold levels of prosperity if in the right hands, but likely it would wind up in the hands of lesser and far more evil men. And the suffering that would follow suit…
Was this perhaps the issue Aeon had for them to solve in this world?
Her thoughts were interrupted by Dastan now falling to his knees, looking up at the Keybearers with a pleading face.
"Roxas, Tyene, I know we have only known each other for a short time but I see you are both individuals of brave hearts and kind souls." The Prince's voice sounded broken yet he managed to hold strong. "Please, I implore you, I need your help more than ever. We need to keep this dagger away from my brother. I know it's too much, but you're the only friends and allies I have left."
The Nobody gave him a smile in response, holding out his hand. "Don't worry Dastan, we've got your back."
Upon hearing that, he released a haggard and appreciative smile, grasping Roxas' arm and was hoisted back up to his feet.
"Thank you, both of you." He earnestly said to them, giving Tyene a nod. "I know I said it already but I am forever in your debt. Hopefully, if we make it out alive after all this, I can repay you both somehow."
"You can for me." Tyene said in good humor, nudging her head at her lover. "He, on the other hand, is far too noble to ask something in return from friends."
Dastan laughed shakily at her comment and the deadpan Roxas directed at her.
"Hold on. Are you serious in helping him?" Tamina says suddenly. "I thought Keyblade wielders were noble heroes of order and justice."
"We are." Roxas plainly said, Tyene shooting the Alamut royal a snide smirk.
"We're doing what's right, unlike some princess who was against us."
"Twice, apparently."
"And helping the Persian who led the charge against my people is doing the right thing?" Tamina indignantly asked.
"Do you have a better alternative?" The Sand Snake rhetorically asked, arms crossed with an expectant look. "From what I'm hearing, Dastan here is the one who at least has some semblance of a plan plus he wants to make things right. For himself, his family, his kingdom and even your own."
"And what of you? Have any bright ideas to share?" Hearing Tamina's silence, Roxas shakes his head in mild disappointment. "Of course you don't."
-Morning-
Before daybreak, the group were ready to ride to a destination Dastan had in mind. However, before they could start, the prince was tying cloth around each of the horses' hooves.
"What are you doing?" Roxas asks.
"Covering our tracks. Makes it difficult in case we're being followed." Was Dastan's response.
Tyene thought it was clever. This was often used by bandits back in Dorne due to the sandy landscape.
"And where will we be going?" Inquired the Dornishgirl. "You never said last night."
"Avarat, where my father will be buried."
Hearing Dastan's clarification, Roxas gave off a bewildered look. "Hold on a moment. Currently, you've become the most wanted man alive for your father's murder and now you want to go to his funeral?"
Tyene scoffs. "Sounds like a stupid, desperate idea."
"It does." Tamina agrees. "And why are we going there, exactly?"
"Well, Nizam will be there. He's the only one I can trust. He'll see Tus set me up and help us in turn." Dastan then puts on the saddle on the horse. "Now step aside, princess."
"Every road to Avrat will be covered with Persian troops." Tamina warns him before nudging her head to the Keybearers. "These two might get by, but you won't be so lucky."
"Which is why we're going through the Valley of Slaves." Came Dastan's retort.
"I'm sorry, what?" Tyene said, doing a double take at the name.
"Valley of Slaves?" Roxas parroted, not liking the sound of that, something Tamina wholeheartedly agreed with.
"Are you mad? No one goes near that wasteland. It's filled with murderers and cutthroats."
"Huh, lovely." Says Roxas, climbing onto his horse.
Tyene followed suit and situated herself in front of the blonde. "My father would probably love going there, just for the experience."
"Your father sounds like a madman." Dastan said with a snort.
"That's putting it politely." Roxas dryly said.
"Did you not hear me?" Tamina frustratedly says. "Did you miss the part about murderers and cutthroats awaiting you?"
"So they say." Was Dastan's dismissive answer. "Come on, we need to move."
"Your whole plan is suicide!" The Princess exclaimed.
"My brother killed my father and left his blood on my hands." The Persian gets on the horse and begins riding with Roxas and Tyene. In the process, Tamina quickened her steps. "If I die trying to set that right, then so be it."
Struggling to keep up, Tamina barks out a yell. "So you're going to leave me here, in the middle of nowhere?!" She whines out, chasing after Dastan. "Noble Dastan and his merry friends, abandoning a helpless woman in the wilderness! What does your precious honor have to say about that?"
This got the Dornish girl to roll her eyes. "Says the woman who is suddenly helpless after trying to kill us."
"I wouldn't go that far." Roxas remarked.
Riding a bit further, Dastan places his focus on the two Keybearers. "Do either of you have any reason that would make me consider bringing her?"
"If we leave her, she'll no doubt die from hunger." Says Tyene before glancing to the water they were riding over. "Thirst, not so much."
Dastan merely gave her a deadpan look but was amused all the same. "I said convince me, not stating the obvious."
Roxas soon brings up a particular point as he looks at Dastan's waist. "She probably knows more about that dagger than either of us. She may even know how to get it working again."
This ends up having Dastan realize the blonde was right. Tamina obviously knows more about the dagger than either of them given the way she reacted to last night when the hourglass handle was emptied of its sand. This ends up having Dastan momentarily stop his horse as he mutters aloud. "Gods, give me the strength not to kill her." He turns his horse around, letting Tamina finally catch up.
At this instance and his placement on the horse, Dastan notices a strange pendant hidden under the hem of her top before helping her get onto his horse.
"She is gonna be a handful." Tyene mutters.
"Tell me about it." Roxas says in turn. "So far, all she's done is whine and complain like a spoiled girl."
"She gets what she wants from her people, given their love for her is great. However, neither of us are them."
"Not to mention she's not experienced to this kind of situation."
Time passed as the group rode on horseback. It was roughly some hours by this point, given the position of the sun.
In the duration of this time, the group encountered a few Heartless skirmishes. Roxas and Tyene were able to take care of them while being sure they protected Tamina and Dastan.
The latter had occasionally joined the pair, feeling indebted in doing so and wishing to keep his own skills sharp. The Heartless were a true challenge that he had never encountered before and with every fight, Dastan felt his experience in his fighting prowess grow.
Literally, he felt like he was getting better. It was an exhilarating sensation.
As for the princess of Alamut, she had a far more subdued and nervous reaction.
"So the old tales are true of the dark creatures." Says Tamina. "Only those with the Keyblades may properly slay them."
"Ahem," The youngest Prince of Persia coughed, raising a brow at her once she faced him.
She gave him a dismissive look, raising her brow before turning away from him with her nose held high.
Dastan shook his head, blinking at the pat on the shoulder he got from Roxas, giving the blond an appreciative smile.
Tamina's eyes drifted over to Roxas, gazing at him with unabashed wonder. Despite their tense and slightly hostile interactions, the Princess was unable to deny that of all three combatants, he was undoubtedly the most skilled and dangerous. The ease in which he dispatched the Heartless was a sight to behold and his use of magic only added to his aura.
"Don't get any ideas, princess." Tamina jerked at the voice of Tyene being so close, glancing over to see a rather comedic and hostile glare directed at her. "I already promised to share him with two others whom I already care for. You -however, I don't care for."
Tamina could only respond with a dumb look of her opening and closing her mouth a few times before huffing and turning away from them, bemoaning the traveling companions she now has.
After some time traveling by horseback, the group had to take a break.
Roxas was serving as lookout whilst Tyene was laying upon their horse, idly stroking its body.
Kneeling to the sand, Dastan was trying to pour sand into the dagger. Once it was filled, he pressed the jewel pommel but nothing happened as a result. He tried again and got the same result, making him grunt and pour the sand out. This had him wonder what was going on exactly.
Seeing what he was doing, Tamina merely laughs. "Without the right sand, it's just another knife. Not even sharp."
Hearing this particular bit of information, Dastan and the Keybearers look at Tamina quizzically.
Getting up, the Persian prince walks over to Tamina with the dagger in hand. "This sand you speak of, is there more of it?"
"Of course not."
Tyene scoffed in disbelief at that. "Oh please, Princess. Don't think you can fool us so easily. My father taught me where there is a particular patch of sand, there is a beach not far. Something like this definitely has more. So start talking. Where can we get more?"
Dastan chortled at the Sand Snakes words.
Tamina only sneered in derision. "Try standing on your heads and hold your breath."
"Oh for the love of- Enough!" Roxas snaps at her, causing the princess to jolt. "I get you're being difficult with your circumstance, but this is ridiculous. We're trying to help undo all the damage caused by Dastan's brother."
Tamina found herself shrinking slightly. She had already gotten many verbal insults and lashings from the others but Roxas always seemed to hold back.
Dastan and Tyene agreed with Roxas with the latter voicing her thoughts. "Like it or not, princess, you're stuck with us. So be more complacent or we'll leave you behind."
Looking back at the princess, Dastan's eyes focused on the hidden necklace she wore and took a better notice of an interesting detail. Of how it somewhat resembled the glass handle of the dagger with its jewel pommel. However, before he could inspect further, he stops when Tamina notices his action.
"See something which interests you, prince?" Tamina mockingly said.
Dastan merely rolls his eyes. "Let's keep moving."
Grasping the reigns of his horse, the Persian moved forward with Roxas mirroring his actions. As for Tyene, she stayed relatively close but kept an eye out for any possible Heartless popping up like earlier.
"If you can't prove to your uncle how the dagger works, why in the world would he believe you?" Tamina asks, walking some distance behind the Persian.
Dastan doesn't turn back but does his best to ignore her. "It's not your problem, princess."
The Alamut Princess frowned, making a snide face now.
"You know you really act like one. Head held high, chest out, long stomping strides." Tamina states, moving in such manners, stomping her feet overdramatically. "The walk of a self-satisfied Persian prince. No doubt it comes from being told since birth that the world is yours," she scoffs, "and actually believing it."
The Persian rounds and snaps at the Alamatian, getting right in her face. "I wasn't born in a palace like you, alright! I was born in the streets! Where I lived if I fought and clawed for it! You knew luxury upon your birth but I only knew despair and hunger."
Tamina was certainly startled, taking a step back and even frightened by the blazing eyes Dastan had.
"A street rat?" Roxas couldn't help but ask, momentarily thinking of Aladdin.
The aforementioned fire in his eyes dulled considerbally upon hearing that.
Dastan gave him a withering stare, one that made the teen wince in apology. "Yes, I was."
"Then how did you become a prince?" Tyene asks, a question shared by Tamina.
The Dornish girl barely recalled the detail back at the banquet of the king adopting Dastan, but never knew the specifics as to why.
"The king… marched into the market one day and… he… he found me as I was protecting someone. He took me in. He gave me a family. He gave me a home. Gave me far more than I ever deserved." The prince couldn't think of any other words, given how painful it was feeling for him. "What you're looking at is the walk of a man who just lost everything." Dastan states, leaving Tamina speechless whereas Roxas and Tyene momentarily glare at her. She saw their gaze and felt genuine remorse, turning away from their eyes.
'Poor Dastan.' Tyene thought as she looked back at the Persian. 'No wonder he's so driven.'
Having been born a bastard, Tyene had to thank her lucky stars and the gods her father acknowledged and greatly loved her alongside her other sisters. She was greatly fortunate she was born into House Martell instead of some other Westerosi House which looked down on bastards; especially those outside of Dorne.
Dastan, however, was an orphan. Perhaps never knowing who his birth parents are all the while growing up from rock bottom. Yet he gained the greatest opportunity one could ever ask for, having him owe everything to the man who he called father.
Now everything was taken away from him while becoming the Scapegoat Prince to the king's murder.
Time passes on in relative silence. Not much really occurred along the way, aside from a few more Heartless encounters. Dastan was a bit more aggressive in the fights, no doubt venting his anger with the earlier discussion of Tamina salting his already present wounds.
Soon, the group arrived in front of ruins with a plethora of skeletons and bones being strung about. It didn't take much for them to realize they were now at the Valley of the Slaves.
Passing through the opened gate, Dastan and the Keybearers did their best to focus on their surroundings. Sadly it was rather hard when hearing Tamina's complaints.
"I'm desperate for a drop of water."
Dastan rolled his eyes. "That's more than we have, since you emptied our last canteen an hour ago."
Tamina looks over to Roxas. "Can't you conjure more? I saw you utilizing water magic."
"I would, but won't as you're the only one here whining about everything." Roxas retorted.
"At least Dastan and I handle things far better than you." Tyene includes.
Tamina almost flailed in response as a child would. "Are you not defenders of the innocent? I wasn't born for adventure like either of you. My constitution is much more… delicate." States Tamina, lagging behind.
"I think you mean sheltered and spoiled." Roxas countered.
Tyene snorts. "I would say the same about my cousin, but that would be an insult."
"And why's that?" Dastan couldn't help but ask.
"Going out and doing her duties as the future ruler of our home." Says the Dornish girl. "One can thank my father for reminding her to honor our ancestors for such a trait."
Before Dastan could question Tyene further, Tamina speaks up. "The wells of Alamat are famed for their clean, cold water."
"Perhaps less time admiring your wells and more time guarding your walls, and you wouldn't be here." Dastan mocks her, but gets no response in turn.
"Huh, I think you actually managed to shut her up." Tyene notes, causing Dastan to laugh ever so briefly.
"A miracle, at last!"
Roxas, however, turned back and saw Tamina had collapsed into the sand.
"Tamina!"
Dastan was the first to reach the Alamatan princess in order to check on her. He didn't see her reaching for a nearby bone when suddenly…
"Dastan!" Roxas cried out.
The Prince turned in time to see Heartless appearing all around them.
In particular, Fat Bandits which made Dastan hesitate.
These enemies in particular were hard for him to deal with. Their fronts are hard to fend off against, thus attacking their backs were the only main way to deal with them.
He glanced over and saw Roxas and Tyene had already engaged the Heartless, taking out several in rapid succession.
Gritting his teeth, Dastan steeled his nerves and pulled out his swords when he felt his belt was lighter than usual.
He glanced down and his eyes widened, seeing a certain dagger was missing.
His head whipped around rapidly, spotting Tamina atop his horse with Roxas and Tyene's tagging along as she dashed off.
"Oh you-"
"Dastan!"
He heard Roxas cry just in time, seeing a Fat Bandit launch its oversized belly and barrelled itself right at him.
"Oh shit." Dastan said to himself, moving at the last second, jumping out of the way in time and landing in a tumble that ended on his knees.
More Heartless appeared around him, Bandits and Lunar Bandits, much to the Prince's chagrin.
"You never wanna make it easy on me, do you?" He growled, got up to his feet, spinning his swords about, eyes shifting about as he waited for one of them to make the first move.
He heard the shifting of sand behind him and in front, a Bandit leapt into the air, curling up into a ball and sword jutting out of its body. It spun forward in its spinning ball form and he heard the swishing of a sword behind him.
Dastan dropped to the ground just as the two spinning Bandits collided with each other in midair.
Both dropped to the ground on either side of him and in a spinning sweep of his swords, he took them both out.
Snapping back up to his feet, Dastan held up both his sword just as a Lunar Bandit brought its down onto his. There was a loud clang that rattled his ears but Dastan ignored it, the thumping of his heart in his ears as his body was taken over by the heat of battle. He swiped his swords up in an arching X manner, getting the Lunar Bandits swords out of his way, allowing him to quickly stab both his swords through the chest of the Heartless, disbursing it.
Tyene and Roxas soon ran by, quickly taking out the other Heartless surrounding him, making him sigh in relief yet he kept his guard up.
He spun about, clashing swords with another Bandit, disarming and destroying it and moved on when a shadow was cast over him.
Dastan whipped his head around and saw a Fat Bandit with its fist hovering about its mouth, coating it with fire.
His eyes widened and he hastily threw his swords up just as the Fat Bandit brought its fist down. The impact of the fire fist hitting the ground in front of the Prince sent the man hurtling through the air.
The prince fell down to the ground hard with pain aching most of his body, the man groaning as he felt multiple cuts, bruises and likely burns all over his body.
"Dastan!" Roxas yelled out, instantly angling his body into a reversal sweep, getting right behind the Fat Bandit and sliced right through its back, destroying it.
He landed on the ground, throwing up Oathkeeper and conjured thirteen pillars of light around him that he dispersed, cutting through multiple Heartless all at once.
With the last of the Heartless taken care of, Roxas and Tyene looked about and finally realized Tamina was gone.
"Fuck!" Tyene curses. "Damn that woman!"
There was a moan of pain, making the two turn to their downed friend.
They were immediately by his side, Roxas pulling out a Hi-Potion that he tossed in the air, calling out the Prince's name. The healing effects of the item washed over the prince, the sound of relief coming from the man.
Before they were able to say or do anything else, the sound of hoofs were heard, making both Keybearers tense up. They glanced over in the direction of the sound and saw what looked like a dozen or so horses running towards them, their rides brandishing many weapons.
"Careful, Tyene." Roxas warned. "Let's not do anything hasty."
The Sand Snake held an unsure expression, wanting to act but opted to trust Roxas' request.
Riders soon approached and encircled them. Roxas and Tyene relatively stood back to back while staying close to the Persian.
Speaking of…
A groan was heard from below, having the two Keybearers look down and sees Dastan finally coming to.
"What the hell…" Dastan mutters out.
It was at this moment that a dark-skinned man wearing tribal clothes drew out a knife and threw it down where it landed all so near Dastan's privates. This startled the Persian significantly in the process with Tyene's eyes widening, certainly surprised but also impressed with the man's accuracy. Roxas kept his gaze on who he identified as the leader of this group.
"Do you three know where you are?" A scruffy, husky-looking man with a beard asks from his horse.
Roxas looked at his friends who could only give him a "what can we say?" look with him looking back up at the bearded man. "More or less."
"Yet you still enter?"
"Not like we had much of a choice." The Nobody answered.
The scruffy fellow hums a little before speaking. "In the heart of Sudan, there is a tribe of warriors known as the Ngbaka. They strike fear into the hearts of all they cross. The Ngbaka are masters of the throwing knife. Wielding blades said to have been blessed by the Creator himself. Their aim is so murderously accurate, they can decapitate three men with one strike."
Tyene hums a little as she edges closer to the buried knife. In the process, Dastan had a similar thought to grab the weapon to use it.
"Cute story and all but we really-"
"Oh, I wouldn't even bother doing that if I were you, my dear. Do you know why?" Asks the scruffy man.
"Not really." Says Roxas. "Though I wager you're gonna tell us anyway."
The man chuckles. "Smart lad." He then gestured towards the tribal man. "This is Seso, he is a Ngbaka. I am Sheikh Amar and I have the good fortune of saving his life, which means that he is now enduringly indebted to me." With the implication hovering above their heads, Dastan and the Keybearers more or less can only comply and relatively surrender, especially with all these men surrounding them. "So tell me, is there any good reason why I shouldn't tell Seso to put his next throw just a little higher?"
The trio were a little mixed in response, especially when seeing Seso withdraw about half a dozen daggers from his person.
It was at this moment did Dastan have an idea. "Well, now that you've brought it up…"
Some unknown distance away from the Valley of Slaves, Tamina looks at the dagger in her hand as she was riding on her pilfered horse. With this back in her possession, she withdrew her hidden necklace and was about to open it when she heard the sound of galloping horses. Turning around, she saw a small horde of bandits charging towards her.
Tamina tried to escape, riding on ahead from the riders from behind. However, she was cut off when more bandits appeared from up ahead. Seeing she was cornered, Tamina quickly got off her horse with both the dagger and a drawn sword in hand. If she was going to be captured, she'd rather die fighting in the process.
Sadly, this wouldn't be the case when she turned around and saw the disappointed looks of the two Keyblade wielders and the smug Dastan on horseback.
"Hello there." His voice was condescending and smarmy.
All this got was Tamina to glare at them.
"So! This is the one, eh?" Questions Sheikh Amar, riding up towards them.
"This is her, alright." Roxas says dryly.
The bandit laughed as he got closer for a better inspection. "Yes! You were right. She's not bad."
"Appearance wise, yes. Personality is another story." Says Tyene, snatching the dagger away from Tamina and tossing it over to Dastan.
Sheikh nods, considering the bit of information. "Still, we have a deal."
"Deal? What deal?" Tamina demands as Sheikh's men surround and grab her.
"Just some payback, is all." Was all Dastan says as he, Roxas and Tyene ride off and follows Sheikh back to the Valley of Slaves.
Eventually the group entered a well hidden cave with a fuming Tamina all tied up. Dastan, however, was rather relaxed as he walked alongside Roxas and Tyene.
"Such a noble prince and kind warriors!" Tamina mocks them.
"Such a gentle and sweet princess!" Dastan mocks back.
"How taken were you all with my fainting act, eagerly leaping to assist the fallen beauty?" Tamina shot back.
"And by the way, it's called 'caring about others'." Roxas rebuked, glaring at Tamina. "Something you clearly never thought about doing outside of your own people."
"Knew from the start you'd try something." Adds in the Dornish girl. "Never would've thought you'd be too stupid to do so close to bandit territory."
Tamina glares at them. "What kind of Keyblade wielders would turn in a princess to bandits anyways?"
Tyene glares back. "Ones who have an ax to grind when a princess backstabs them."
"So don't think about taking the high road for what you've done." Says Roxas. "It makes you less appealing."
Dastan snorts out a laugh. "And who said she was?"
"Well there must be some reason you can't take your eyes off me." Tamina smirks upon seeing him stutter.
Rolling her eyes, Tyene smacks the prince at the back of his head, snapping him out of it.
"Is this how it's like with me?" Roxas couldn't help but ask.
"Maybe a little." Tyene chimes in. "Though I find yours more enjoyable."
Composing himself, Dastan says "I don't trust you. And you're not my type."
"Nice save." Tyene quipped, getting an annoyed look out of him.
"I'm not some desperate slave girl." Tamina hisses. "I'm actually capable of voicing my own thoughts."
"Trust me, we know." Roxas retorted.
"And none of them are pleasant by this point." Tyene snipped, shooting her an unamused look, one which she returned.
It was here when Sheikh Amar came up to them with a pleasant smile on his face. "Oh, she'll make a very nice addition."
Seeing the look on the man's face, Roxas couldn't help but ask "What do you intend to do with her?"
"Yes, do tell. Can't you see how concerned they are?" Tamina hissed.
"Give me a moment." Dastan grabs Tamina by the arm and pulls her over to them. "It's hard for me to admit, but you were right." In a quick moment, Dastan grabs the hidden necklace and pulls it away from her, much to her frustration. "I did see what I was looking for."
Seeing the item in question, Roxas and Tyene note how similar it was to the dagger's handle in nearly every detail. And with the present light, they saw a grainy substance within; making them come to a realization.
"So you did know how to fix it." Roxas accusingly said.
"And more and more lies keep piling up in the process." Tyene distastefully stated.
Tamina struggles to get free with desperation on her face. "Please you all have to listen to me."
The Sand Snake scoffed. "Sorry, princess, but with all you've done, it's hard to actually do that."
Once giving the necklace a little inspection, Dastan withdraws the dagger from his waist to refill it. "When my uncle sees the power of this dagger, he'll believe me."
"I know I haven't been entirely honest with all of you." Tamina was now sounding desperate.
"No shit!"
While Roxas was having a similar response in mind like his lover and fellow Keyblade wielder, he wanted to at least hear what Tamina had to say.
"I'm the guardian of a divine covenant. The dagger is sacred, it was being smuggled to safety when you intercepted and stole it. If the dagger gets into the wrong hands-"
"I think we've all heard enough out of you for a while." Dastan cut her off, pointing a finger at her.
"But don't worry, we'll take good care of the dagger." Tyene says with a smirk.
"You fellas don't want to miss this." Sheikh Amar interrupts their conversation, gesturing to them to follow him to the exit.
Seeing them leave, Tamina yells out for their attention as she was being dragged away. "You don't understand! This is a matter of the gods, not man!"
Tyene turns around and gives the princess a smug look. "Your gods, not ours!"
Sadly Tamina's pleas were ignored, all due to her actions.
Nearing the exit, Dastan, Roxas and Tyene halt momentarily when hearing the roaring cheers in the air.
"Come on!" Sheikh calls out to them. "If we hurry, we'll see the start!"
"The start of what?"
Coming to the end, they were greeted with daylight along with a large fence in their way. Sheikh opened it up, giving the trio a better look when they saw large feathered birds racing across a racetrack with riders on their backs.
"What are those?" Dastan asks in amazement.
Roxas looked at them and realized something. "Chocobos?"
"Those are chocobos?" Tyene questions aloud.
Indeed they were chocobos, fully grown ones at that. They were in different coloration from yellow, black, green, blue, red and so forth. And they ran at speeds that would make even the most skilled horses seem like tortoises.
"Oh yes. Beauties, all of them." Sheikh says with pride in his voice. "Every Tuesday and Thursday we have these races. What they lack in typical beauty they make up for in fighting spirit and speed."
"I'll say."
"Would this be how Chocho and Jojo would really be like when they're fully grown?" Tyene asks.
Roxas hummed and nodded. "Believe so."
The bandit looks at the two Keybearers with curiosity. "Oh? It sounds like you have knowledge on these fine creatures."
"We do." Tyene answered.
"Where'd you find these… chocobos?" Roxas inquired.
"Not easy, that I can tell ya." Sheikh leads them out and goes to another area. "Chocobos are very rare, but through clever trade, I managed to get my hands on a whole flock of 'em."
"I bet." No. XIII mumbled.
"I've heard all these terrible stories of this place." Dastan spoke up.
"The bloodthirsty slaves murdering their masters?" Sheikh laughs. "That's a good story. It's well-told, ever-evolving, but alas not true."
Tyene made a few hand gestures. "But the skeletons we saw-"
"I bought those from a woman in Bukhara. I crafted our lurid reputation in order to fend off the most insidious evil that's been lurking this forsaken country of ours. You know what I'm talkin' about?"
The trio glanced at each other with Roxas answering for them.
"Uh… not really."
"Taxes." Sheikh spat out, literally and figuratively.
"Taxes?" They said in unison, completely thrown off by the reason.
The bandit looks at Roxas first before Tyene. "Oh you two are so fortunate to not pay them just yet. But trust me, taxes are the absolute worst." Sheikh continues on with his rant. "Dirty Persians with their armies, their fortresses, their roads. Who pays for it all, eh? The small businessmen!"
Tyene shifts a little in her spot. "He's not exactly wrong."
This got a smile out of the bandit. "See, that's why I started my little campaign, to spread some false notoriety. I spread it like a venerable disease in a Turkish harem. Scares them away and lets people like us enjoy ourselves without any taxes breathing down our necks."
"Huh, that makes sense." Roxas mutters aloud. "Have enough stories like that going around, no one would dare venture here unless you had an army."
A horn was heard in the air, signaling many in the process.
"Uh oh, we better move."
"Huh?"
The trio looked about and saw everyone running away and getting behind the fences. A moment later, they saw various chocobos running from around the corner, causing them to panic and run to avoid being trampled. Just when they finally got behind the fence, a few chocobos nearly ran into them.
"That was a close one."
"Behold the mighty chocobos!" Sheikh declares as the trio joined them in his booth. They saw the large birds all but zoom past them, displaying quite the trait on their speed. "Oh I love this!"
"Look at 'em go!" Dastan says in amazement.
"They look faster than Dornish steeds!" Tyene comments in wonderment.
Indeed, Roxas saw them and wondered if this was a fraction of Chocho's and Jojo's capabilities once they fully grew into adulthood. 'Gonna need to talk to Cloud more about this.'
"And the tax collectors can stay clear of me and my customers. Everybody's happy!" The Race organizer happily proclaimed.
"Just so long as you don't get trampled, right?" Says Roxas, making Sheikh laugh.
"All so true." The bandit turns over to one of his workers and barks out an order. "Come on, get the girls out!"
Shortly after this order was given, the fence opened up some distance away where Dastan, Roxas and Tyene saw a variety of women come out wearing somewhat revealing dresses with feather head-pieces holding trays with cups. Amongst them they saw Tamina.
Seeing Alamut's princess in such a state made Tyene smirk. "Oh, that's quite the look."
"Come on, run! Don't walk!" Sheikh yells out as many attendees whistled at the girls. "Hey, if you drop anything, you pay for it! It's out of your wages!"
"You pay them?" Tyene asked in bewilderment.
"What? I'm not a monster." Sheikh almost sounded offended there.
One man ends up grabbing Tamina by the arm, causing to round at the man and throwing one of the cups into the man's face. "Don't touch me!"
"She's a lively one." Amar commented in amusement. "Where'd you find her?"
Dastan was quick to make a little story. "In the slave markets of Lur. I was headed to Iraq to trade in a herd of camels for my friends and family."
Roxas soon picks up from there to add onto the tall tale. "We were with him at the time when she tried to cheat us out of a deal."
Tyene smirks a little and decides to spice up on a particular detail. "Ending up keeping her for recompense when she attacked us." She hugs Roxas from the side and places her head on his shoulder. "She's now our bedwarmer."
Roxas became flustered while Dastan merely gave a Dornish girl a look.
Looking away from the two Keybearers and over to Tamina, Sheik gave his thoughts. "Huh, should've kept the camels instead."
"Yeah… Would've been better." Dastan began with a faux sour look. "Noble Sheik Amar, we appreciate your hospitality. You run a fine establishment, but if you could give us the supplies we need-"
Before Dastan could finish what he intended to say, Sheikh suddenly grabs his face and gives him a look. "You know something, Persian? You bear a remarkable resemblance to the disgrace prince who fled after murdering the king." He glances over to Roxas and Tyene. "Even his accomplices."
This got the prince and Keybearers to get a bit nervous, realizing their cover was no doubt blown.
Suddenly the trio makes a break for it, which Seso quickly draws and throws knives at them, which catches their sleeves to nearby posts and stops them in their tracks.
"Did I ever tell you about the Ngbaka?" Sheikh casually said.
Dastan rolled his eyes at that statement. "Yes, you did."
"Eh, nothing beats a good story. Yours was rather convincing." Sheikh points to Tamina. "She does appear to be worth a large assortment of camels. However…" He looks back at Roxas and Tyene. "It didn't work out in convincing me she was your bedmate."
Tyene gave her love a sheepish look. "...At least I tried."
"I don't know the exact story with you lot, but I do know the new king offered rewards for you, which frankly between us borders on the obscene. I'd trade my own mother for that kind of gold."
This caused the others, even Seso, to pause and look at Sheikh.
"Really? Your own mother?" Roxas said in disbelief.
"What? You don't know what she's like." The bandit says defensively. "Take them down to the Persian outpost."
Seso grabbed Dastan but ended up pulling out the dagger which caused all this in the first place. This made the trio rather nervous.
Sheikh was quick to spot it. "Wait, wait, wait. Look. That…"
Seso does a quick inspection of it. "Nice knife."
"It's not really all that great. Mostly for show." Dastan quickly said.
"Yeah, can't exactly cut all that well." Roxas added on.
At this point, Tamina looked up and got extra nervous upon seeing the dagger handed over to Sheikh Amar.
Once inspecting it, Sheikh tosses it to one of his workers. "Melt it down for the jewels and material."
Acting quickly, Tamina rushes over to one of the fences, pulls it open and releases the chocobos. And in the process of the commotion, she unlatches a part of the fences to release what appears to be a variety of chocobo treats. All this caused quite the amount of chaos on the racetrack.
"HEY! WHO LET THEM OUT!" Sheikh roars out loud.
With this distraction occurring, Dastan, Tyene and Roxas made their move by leaping over the railing. Each of them landed on a Chocobo as they struggled to take control.
"This was so much easier than I imagined!" Tyene cried out.
"How do you control these things!?" The Persian Prince called out.
"This is more difficult than I would've thought." Roxas grumbled and with a heave of the reigns, the Chocobo calmed down slightly, the blond patting its neck.
"Good boy." He assuaged, glancing over to his two friends, seeing they had copied what he had done and had now settled their Chocobos as well.
Once taking control, the trio steered their Chocobos and moved onward.
For Dastan, he focused on the man carrying the one dagger, who was running for his life now. Using his chocobo, the prince quickly snatches the unique dagger away just before grabbing Tamina in the process.
"To the tunnels!" Says Alamut's princess.
Up above, Seso was about to throw his knives at the targets when Sheikh stops him. "Stop! You might hit a bird!" He looks back and growls in anger. "I'll get you for this, you hear!"
With their pilfered Chocobos, the group made it out of the Valley of Slaves.
-Later that Day-
Once crossing the canyon, the four look over a cliff to see a procession of people heading to Avrat.
"They've all come for my father's funeral."
Roxas rubs his chin a little and ponders aloud. "With a crowd this big, sneaking in should be relatively easy."
"Not quite." Says Tamina. "There's bound to be a hundred Persian soldiers watching the gate."
"Maybe more." Dastan assumes before focusing back on the princess. "If you want to stay close to this dagger, you need to help us get in unnoticed."
"With all these foreign dignitaries, I guess you know a few." Came Tyene's comment.
Indeed Tamina did. The group were able to sneak and blend in accordingly. However, to Dastan's unfortunate luck, he ended up being a pallbearer for what was hands down the fattest noble they've ever seen; who situated himself on a raised palanquin.
"Couldn't… you have found… someone lighter?" Dastan struggles out. His back and shoulder was probably going to give out at some point.
Tamina ignored the Persian with bliss on her face as she handed the man some nuts.
The fat noble withdrew a nutcracker, broke and ate the nuts before tossing the shells onto Dastan.
"The Mughals of the Hindu Kush are a noble people. You should be honored." Tamina said, very much amused at the man's plight.
"So… honored…" Dastan grumbles out. "You are… despicable." He looks over to Roxas and Tyene. "Can't… you help?"
"I'm too short." Roxas said with a shrug, holding a plate of fruit.
"I'm busy fanning the man." Tyene answered, shooting a sympathetic look at the Prince.
"Dastan, where's the dagger?" Tamina abruptly asked.
"You're welcome to search me for it." Dastan smirks. "You'll have to be very thorough."
This caused the princess to growl whereas Tyene giggles.
Eventually, the group made it past the gate and guards, which allowed them to ditch the fat noble. Once changing into other clothing, they went looking for Nizam.
Upon the rooftops, the four looked about and saw Nizam and Garsiv in the funeral procession.
"Tus isn't here." Dastan notes.
"He must still be in Alamut." Tyene realizes. "He's searching for something within that city."
The Nobody of the group stared at the Uncle and Brother of Dastan until making a decision.
Roxas turns to the princess. "Tamina, the sand that powers the dagger, there's more of it in Alamut, isn't there?" No answer was given as Tamina remained silent. Roxas released an annoyed breath, grabbing her shoulder and making her face him. "Tamina, this is serious. You called us Noble warriors and all that other stuff. If you want our help, you should consider telling us what's going on."
"Isn't that what you're doing now?" Tamina remarked.
"No, we're helping clear Dastan's name." Tyene clarifies. "You're just along for the ride."
"She's not wrong." Roxas adds in. "You haven't exactly done a single thing in helping us since we escaped Alamut."
"I got us out of the Valley of Slaves." Tamina indignantly shot back.
"After I got the dagger while Roxas and Tyene did most of the heavy lifting with the Heartless." States Dastan.
"Look, we can mock the princess for her uselessness later." Says Tyene, ignoring Tamina's glare. "We need to get a message to Dastan's uncle."
"Any bright ideas?" Roxas asked.
Looking over, they saw Dastan already taken off.
"Or he could do that." Tyene exasperatedly said.
"And you call me annoying."
"You are annoying." Tyene quipped. "Dastan is just a bit reckless. You're stupid."
"Ladies, please." Roxas cut them off, giving them both a look. He glanced back in the direction where Dastan had gone off to nudged his head there. "Come on."
Running across the rooftops, the prince made a number of leaps and hurdles in order to descend to the lower levels.
Making it through, Dastan used the assembled crowd to all but climb into the funeral cart for a better cover. Peaking slightly through the curtain, he saw his uncle reaching distance for him to place a message.
He only realized he didn't have an already written message prepared.
He looked at the golden death mask of his father. Thoughts became a whirlwind with how things are. The scapegoat Prince clenched his fists, leaning on them as the sight of his dying father now plagued his thoughts until he roughly shook his head, dispelling them.
Looking back at his father, he spotted some parchment in the funeral cart, getting an idea. Dastan managed to snatch some of the parchment, using some materials to write out a note. Once done, he quickly shot out his arm and put the message into Nizam's robe pocket.
Not wanting to stay any longer, Dastan found a chance to sneak out of the covered cart and into the crowds and ran into his companions.
"Oi, Dastan." Tyene complained, not giving him a chance to respond as she bopped him on the side of his head. "Don't go running off like that on us. We don't know this place like you do."
"Sorry." He earnestly said. "I just… I had to see my father."
Their expressions shifted, Roxas shooting him an understanding look, shifting a moment later.
"I take it you have a plan."
Dastan nodded, quickly elaborating on what he intended to do.
"Difficult, not impossible." The Prince finalized.
"Or more proof you're insane." Tamina deadpanned.
Dastan raised a brow at her. "Then why do you look so impressed?"
Ignoring the bit of banter between the prince and princess, Roxas now brings up the next issue to deal with. "So who's coming with you to see your uncle and who's staying with Tamina?"
Humming a little, Dastan thinks before coming to a decision. "Roxas, you stay with Tamina. Tyene, you're with me."
Making their way to another part of the city where the eventual meeting will take place, Tamina spots a dark coat and giving her an idea.
"Hold on a moment." She says, snatching and handing it to Dastan.
As she spun him around, she caught a glimpse of the dagger strapped to the back of his waist, making her smirk ever so slightly.
In a small isolated area of the local market, Nizam was wearing a hood to obscure his features. Passing by a stand, he picked up a pomegranate fruit and inspected it.
"You used to buy those for me when I was a boy." Dastan voice came from behind, coming out from hiding.
"You used to spit the seeds at Garsiv." Nizam chuckles slightly before becoming a bit more serious. "You shouldn't have brought me here, Dastan."
"I had no choice, uncle. Follow me."
Having no choice on this matter either, Nizam followed his nephew to a small room where Tyene was present and waiting for them.
"I thought we were meeting alone." Nizam idly said.
"Yes, well, lately I've learned having some company around is rather helpful." Says Dastan said before he hugged his uncle, who returned the gesture. The prince then broke it and backed away slightly. "I didn't kill father. You know I would never do such a thing."
"Your actions say otherwise." Nizam eyes the Dornish girl. "Same with you and the boy. You could've stayed aside or apprehended him, yet you assisted on his escape."
"We had no choice on the matter but to flee." Tyene earnestly said. "Believe us."
"Tus gave me that prayer robe." Dastan quickly said, regaining his uncles attention. "He was the one who poisoned it."
Nizam sighs in response. "Dastan…"
"But he's not here, is he?" He went on, not giving his uncle the chance to respond. "At his father's funeral. Instead he remains in Alamut."
"Our allies will see our invasion is just." Nizam countered. "The search for Alamut's weapon forges is important."
"Yes, but not if there aren't any to begin with." Says Tyene, causing Nizam to look at her quizzically.
"Tus is after power. That's why he murdered father." Dastan tries to explain to his uncle. "And now he searches not for weapons, but for the sand that fuels a mystical device."
This only got Nizam to look at his nephew all so strangely. "This is why you brought me here, Dastan? Mystical devices? You're merely grasping at fantasies."
"We're being serious." Tyene butts in.
Dastan gets up close to his uncle. "Do you remember after the battle you stopped Tus from taking the dagger I'd won?" He sees him nod slightly. "That dagger is the reason he invaded Alamut."
Nizam was quiet for a moment before speaking. "This dagger… you have it with you?"
"I do." Dastan reaches behind to pull out the dagger wrapped in a cloth.
"Be careful, it's very dangerous." Came Tyene's warning.
"It has incredible powers." Dastan includes.
Once handed the bundled item, Nizam unfurls it to reveal-
"Is this some sort of joke?" Nizam said in annoyed anger.
Both Dastan and Tyene look at the item. It wasn't the mystical dagger… but a nutcracker.
It didn't take long for the two to realize who was behind this.
"Tamina." Tyene and Dastan growl out.
"Tamina?" Nizam parroted, a raised brow. "The Princess of Alamut."
Tyene scoffed blithely. "Princess is one way to describe her. An annoying bitch is far more appropriate."
"Quite the crude compatriot you have here, Dastan." Nizam dryly remarked, holding up the nutcracker.
Dastan felt like breaking a wall, his rage almost boiling over at once again being duped by the Princess, looking back at his Uncle when he stilled.
It was at this moment did Dastan notice something in particular. He reached out and grasped Nizam's hands and voiced a particular detail. "Your hands are burnt."
"Yes. From trying to pull the poisoned robe off your father." Nizam calmly said and… that didn't sit well with the Rogue Prince and Sand Snake.
Tyene gave Nizam a strange look. "I don't recall you being part of the group who tried doing so." She looks at the hands once more. "And those markings… look too old to be from the banquet."
This ends up having Dastan to widen his eyes.
"Is something wrong, Dastan?" Asks Nizam.
He stammered slightly, glancing over at Tyene and with the face she was making…
"It's just…" Dastan stepped forward, a troubled gaze in his eyes. "Tus is my brother. I can't believe he would do something like this."
Nizam sighed, almost sounding apathetic. "I can't say, Dastan. Perhaps he never respected you as you deserve, only saw you as someone he could use."
"Someone to keep his wine glass full?" The Prince retorts
"My service to your father was different." His Uncle quickly shot back "We shared the same blood."
Dastan was now inches away from Nizam, looking him square in the eyes.
"...How many times did father speak of you saving him from that lion?" Dastan asks, earning a curious look from Tyene. "That was his favorite story."
"One of many, yes." Nizam dispassionately said.
"No," Dastan pointedly said. "That one was his favorite. We heard it all at least once a week for years on end."
During this part of the exchange, Tyene was able to pick up on some wood creaking. She glanced slightly and saw some soldiers up above aiming arrows down at them.
"I'm afraid you're speaking in riddles, Dastan." Says Nizam.
"Move!" Tyene cried out, grabbing Dastan and pulling him away at the last second just as several arrows came down.
"Wait, Dastan." Nizam lazily called out to him, the pair ignoring the man as they ran off.
They barged through a door into a busy bazaar and were greeted by several Persian soldiers charging at them.
Tyene was the first to react, calling her Keyblade out and whacking the first two soldiers aside with Dastan taking out the rest. They quickly sprinted through the crowded area, all while more Persian soldiers chased after them.
They ran at full speed, shoving through many people, avoiding and taking out Persian soldiers that managed to get in their way.
"We have to get out of here." Tyene yelled out. "Roxas and Tamina are waiting for us outside the city."
Dastan could only nod when he flailed back slightly.
An ax flew past them, causing them to jump back.
Turning to the source, they saw Garsiv holding an ax and shield with two Persian guards at his side.
"Murderer!" The brother roared out, rushing at full speed towards his little brother.
Tyene would have intercepted them had it not been for the Persian Guards firing arrows at her. Garsiv managed to tackle Dastan down, the two entering into a brief struggle with the elder on top and the younger holding his wrists back.
"I didn't kill father, Garsiv!"
"Then why did you run?" Garsiv shot back, making Dastan pause until he shook his head and in a burst of speed, he shoved his brother off of him.
Tyene rushed by, helping him back up to his feet and the pair resumed their run.
They heard the frustrated and angered shout of Garsiv.
"Seven Hells," Tyene remarked. "He's got some anger issues."
"He's always been like that." Dastan breathed out and despite the situation, his tone was one of fond exasperation. "Father always scolded him for being more bullheaded than I sometimes. But he's most effective on the battlefield."
"Dastan!"
"Right, right, sorry."
They kept on running, going through many buildings until…
The duo found themselves in the company of some extremely attractive women.
"Ah, hello ladies." Dastan greeted in his best suave tone, despite sounding winded.
"Dastan." Tyene lightly admonished. "You can flirt when our lives aren't on the line."
"Sorry again."
They resumed their run, going through what was likely a pleasure house, knocking out several Persian guards until they reached an open area.
And waiting for them was Garsiv.
"Oh come on, really?" Tyene whined at the sight of him.
"He's persistent." Dastan comments, readying himself for the coming bout.
Garsiv took a discarded shield from an unconscious Persian soldier, slowly walking towards them.
Dastan held up a hand, sending him a pleading look.
"Garsiv, please, I didn't kill father."
"Then God will pardon you after your head rolls!" Garsiv declares, charging in but Tyene blocks him with Missing Ache. "Out of my way!"
"Sorry, but won't." She pushes him away before swinging her weapon which clangs against Garsiv's shield. The force of the blows caused him to back away before coming in with an ax swing, having her duck and swerve.
"Why are you so set on killing him? He's your brother!" Tyene halts Garsiv's swing.
"A brother who murdered family and fled!" The middle brother shouted back. "If he didn't kill him, he wouldn't have ran!"
Garsiv attempted to push her away but it was two on one.
Dastan stepped forward with an arching swing upwards, striking the shield out his hand and Tyene swatted the ax from the other and Dastan finished it off with a spinning kick that made Garsiv stumbled back, tripping over a step and landing hard on the ground, his helmet rattling his head.
The Prince groaned in pain, slowly removing his helmet, clutching his head as he forced himself to stand.
Not taking any chances, the Sand Snake grasped Garsiv's arm, performing a throw and having him break through a doorway and tumble on the ground.
"Tyene!" Dastan bemoaned. "Was that really necessary?"
"In life and death encounters, yes." She said, walking into the one room to check if Garsiv was alright. The man groaned and sought to get up, but was knocked unconscious when the Sand Snake snapped her leg and kicked the man across the head.
She looked back up at Dastan, a more annoyed look on his face.
"He'll be fine." She waved off, getting a derisive snort from her friend. It was then did the pair notice they were not alone as they looked over to the nearby bed and saw a pair of naked women hugging each other in fright.
"Oh," Dastan stammered, blushing slightly at the sight of them. "Er, um…"
"By the Gods, you're a maiden boy!" Tyene teased in amused disbelief.
"There's nothing wrong with that!" He defends himself.
Tyene shook her head, turning away from him and glancing at the women, giving them a saucy smirk.
"Ladies. Sorry for the intrusion." Tyene purred, leaning forward to give them a good view of her cleavage. "We didn't mean to frighten either of you." She reached out and gently grasped a hand from each of them before gently kissing their knuckles while not breaking eye contact with them. "A shame we had to spoil such a beautiful, lovely time between two desert flowers."
For the scapegoat prince, he saw the two courtesans blush slightly on Tyene's advances while calming them down from their sudden intrusion. He then gave his companion a bewildered look which screamed "seriously?", causing her to roll her eyes once noticing his response. "Now it is the appropriate time to flirt."
"How does that even-"
"Alright, enough time's wasted, let's move." Tyene interrupted, winking at the two women before rushing off.
"Oi, don't go rushing off without answering!" Dastan complained, having to run after her.
In an area on the outskirts of the city, Tamina was getting quite antsy. She was all so eager to leave, but Roxas wouldn't let her.
"We're wasting time. We must move." She impatiently said.
"Well excuse~~ me, princess, but we ain't going until Dastan and Tyene return." He gives her a smirk. "Besides, you wouldn't want to leave the dagger behind, right?"
"Yes… of course…"
Hearing the hesitant response, and seeing her make her way to one of the Chocobos, Roxas quickly realized something.
Just as Tamina was about to climb onto the featured creature-
"Force…"
She suddenly fell to the ground with a massive weight blanketing her entire body.
"What… the…" Tamina struggles to get up, but soon feels someone search her person. Turning her head, she saw it was Roxas. "What are… you doing…?"
The Keybearer doesn't answer, only pulling out the bundled cloth where the dagger was wrapped inside. He stared at the dagger before looking back down at Tamin, anger now lacing his features.
"This is getting old, you know that?" He says with a glare, shaking the dagger for added emphasis.
"I had no choice!" Tamina argued.
"There's always a choice and you know it!" He lets out a frustrated groan. "I swear, you are perhaps one of the most annoying royals I've had to deal with."
With his personal experience in Westeros, that was saying something.
"I have to do this!" Tamina now truly sounded desperate. "You have no idea what's at stake."
Before Roxas could retort, he heard commotion nearby. Looking over, he saw Tyene and Dastan running over like their lives depended on it.
"We need to move, now!" Dastan yells, quickly climbing onto the nearest Chocobo.
Seeing the severity of the situation, Roxas ceased the Gravity spell, got Tamina back onto her feet as he and the others quickly got onto the chocobos.
"What the hell happened?" Roxas asked.
"We'll explain once away from the city!" Tyene says, as she urges her ride to go faster. "Come on."
The four Chocobos left a trail in their wake as they dashed away from the city of Avrat with great haste.
Off in the distance, atop a rocky pillar, a figure in black looked on and saw the four's escape.
"Let's see how they fair on this task of yours, Aeon." Says MoM before a Corridor of Darkness envelops him.
-End Chapter-
AN:
You know the usual song and dance number with why I haven't done any updates. Let's move on.
To begin with, many of you guys thought of me having Roxas and Tyene end up in Dune, but you are wrong. I was in fact wanting to do the Prince of Persia. Yes it's from the video game series but the one film project is a Disney property.
As much as I'd… possibly like to have Roxas and Tyene take part of the later events of Dune, it would've been very complicated to work with.
FMW: Yeah, Dune is way, way, waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too expansive a property in our eyes to just do a one-off with Roxas and Tyene going through a world like that. Thematically, it also doesn't fully fit wherein, despite the whole Game Of Thrones-esque environment of House Atreides and Harkonnen fighting each other, it's way too sci-fi to fit into what we're going for here, which, I know, Kingdom Hearts has technology as well and all that shit but it does fall more into the magical and fantastical side of things despite it being technology. I mean, data making proper clones? How does that work? I'm actually surprised how few people considered Prince of Persia or even John Carter or lack thereof. Both movie renditions were made by Disney and they're also both desert settings. *shrug, oh well.
Jeb: Another bit, I had to temporarily take away a few elements for Tyene and Roxas to get a slight edge of sorts; what I'm talking out is the magic mirror, the charms and Bahamut. When thinking things through and watching Prince of Persia several times to figure out the rendered story events, it would've been hard to incorporate and squeeze them in; thus they had to be taken away for the time being and serving as a slight incentive to make them cooperate to Aeon's desire to save the present world.
FMW: So yeah, Prince Of Persia is the current world and I hope you guys are prepared for more surprise worlds since there's a lot to go through.
Anyways, be sure to review this story guys! Would like the criticisms. Please and thank you!
