CHAPTER 249

It was somewhere past midnight, perhaps two or three in the morning. A light fog had settled in.

Kyra and Dr. Johnson were finally asleep on the couch. Dr. Conners was still at his post, but Daniel could tell just by the sound of his breath that he was nodding off. Joan hadn't moved from the desk. The quiet creaking of her rocking back and forth in the office chair had long become an ambient noise.

Seth was still at the window. He felt that he had regained most of his strength and coordination. He stood upright and continued to stare through the night.

"You don't feel like you're in control," Daniel's voice was a whisper in the dark. He didn't look away from the window.

Seth wasn't sure at first if he was even talking to him, but as they both stood there he got a powerful sense that Daniel was waiting for an answer. He glanced at him. "And you do?"

Daniel was silent for a while, then he said, "you can't control the current, but you can swim with it, and learn how to use it to your advantage."

Ms. Murdock's voice slithered from behind the desk, "sounds to me like a mere illusion of being in control."

Daniel said, "I'm still standing."

"Perhaps at the misfortune of others, I imagine."

Seth felt like if he could see the details of Daniel's skin in the dark he would've seen it all tighten. He pictured it being the kind of subtle detail a judge might look for in a guilty suspect. In the gloom however, Daniel appeared as stoic as ever.

"Whatever it takes."

Seth could feel the space between Daniel and Ms. Murdock wrenching like a twisting rope. Though it grew tighter and tighter both of them appeared to remain very cool.

Daniel said, "I thought you of all people understood that, Ms. Murdock, the harsh realities of survival. They do." Daniel nodded at the glass. "Those raptors out there. The beasts out there." He tilted his head at Seth. "That's the true nature of the world, Seth. Hunt or be hunted. Kill or be killed. You know it. I can tell. If there's one thing this island has taught you, it's that." Daniel paused. "A word of advice, Seth." he leaned closer. "Embrace it."
