Dracula was very thorough with the test he had designed for Mavis. First there were some questions and answers bit, where Dracula and Emily asked Mavis what she should avoid in any human community to avoid detection or revealing herself as a monster. Mavis would list the items as sunlight, garlic, and anything with a reflective surface. She also said she would not fly, transform, or use any of her powers in front of any humans. Mavis passed this bit of the test very easily.
After the questions it was time for the physical practice with the fake human village. Dracula had the zombie staff along with Victor dress up as villagers and wear human looking masks on their faces. They ran many test and drills with the fake village with the fake villagers having many levels of casualness and alertness, when Mavis went in. It was a tough series of test, but with help and encouragement from Emily and Victoria, Mavis passed through one test after the other proving she could walk among humans and keep her monster nature and identity a secret.
Dracula was a bit conflicted by this. He was very impressed and proud of Mavis's skills and determination. Mavis proved herself to be very capable, but on the other hand he was still very worried about her. Dracula knew that no amount of testing could cover every scenario out in the real world and humans weren't one hundred percent predictable. What if Mavis encountered a member of the Van Helsing monster hunter family? Unlike with most humans the Van Helsings were a particular smart and hateful bunch of human monster hunters with a nasty set of skills and knowledge who could be very dangerous. True no one had heard anything about the Van Helsings in a long time, presumably they had all died or gone into retirement, but they could still be lurking out in the world. Dracula shuddered at the thought of Mavis being captured or killed by the Van Helsings. He didn't want that to happen to Mavis or any members of his family.
Mavis's 118th birthday was coming up and Dracula had one least test he wanted to preform. It was an angry mob test to see how Mavis could handle one. If Mavis managed to keep her cool and either escaped the mob or managed to successfully hide from them she would pass the test. Dracula decided that no matter what the outcome was, he would be supportive of Mavis.
The test began and Mavis walked through the square of the fake town, with a calm and vigilant look on her face. Victor and the staff in their human disguises then burst onto the scene with pitchforks and torches looking like an angry mob. They came out of alleyways, out of the doors of shops, and a few burst out of windows of the shop and began to surround Mavis.
"Vampire!" Said Victor in a fake and dramatic way.
The staff followed with loud shouts of their own.
"Monster!"
"Hate it!"
"Burn it!"
Mavis looked at the mob and then she began to run towards the front of it and at the last possible second turned into a mouse and darted through their legs before popping up on the other side and turning into her regular self. The mob stumbled around in confusion with a few of the zombie staff accidentally bumping into each other and setting their bodies on fire. It was a very odd sight to see what looked like to be humans on fire creating a fairly large fire that could be seen from far away, but the undead staff didn't seem to mind as they continued on with their role as an angry mob of humans. Mavis exchanged looks with Victor who was one of the few mob members on fire. Victor just shrugged and motioned for Mavis to carry on with the test. Mavis nodded her head and took flight flying out of the village and out of the sight of the angry mob.
"Cut! Nice job everyone, other then setting yourselves on fire you preformed brilliantly." Said Victor as he removed his disguise and set about with a few of the other staff members to put the fires out.
Mavis returned to the village as Dracula, Emily, and Victoria walked onto the set to congratulate her.
"Nicely done Mavis. You kept your cool and managed to escape the mob. Nicely done." Said Dracula.
"Thanks dad. Can I go exploring the countryside now?" Asked Mavis.
"Not yet. I think Frank and the others should be arriving at the Hotel to wish you a Happy Birthday. They all want to see you, plus I have some fun events all planned out." Said Dracula.
"Ok, but I will go explore the countryside afterwards." Said Mavis.
"Fair enough. You've proven to be capable and you passed my tests." Said Dracula.
The family along with the staff began to take the fake village down, unaware of a figure watching them all from a nearby cliff. The figure had taken notice of the fire from earlier and had become curious about it. After the village was taken down the monsters headed back to the Hotel, unaware that they were being followed by the mysterious figure.
To be continued.
