"Miral, Dexter, eat your breakfast or you are not going on the field trip," B'Elanna said as she gathered PADDs. Both children settled down. B'Elanna let out a sigh.
"Why can't I go?" Gabby said from the table.
"Because you are too young," B'Elanna sighed. She didn't know how many times either Tom or she had told her, she was too young.
"It's not fair," Gabby yelled.
B'Elanna kissed the top of her head. "Life is not fair," She took a bite of Gabby's breakfast.
"Mommy," Gabby pushed B'Elanna's hand away from her food. Gabby gave her a look that almost had B'Elanna laughing.
"Should I take it from Dexter?" B'Elanna took a bite from Dexter's plate.
"Yes," Gabby said as Dexter's eyes lighten up from his laughter.
"Or Miral," B'Elanna took a bite of Miral's food.
"Yes," Gabby laughed. B'Elanna stood there listening to her children's laughter. It was music to her heart. She knew that her children were happy and loved.
She kissed each of them on the top of the head. "Come on, lets get going," B'Elanna watched as each child got up and headed for the door. She loved that she got to walk her children to school.
"How did you get out of Engineering?" Tom said as he wrapped an arm around B'Elanna's waist and pulled her close. He leaned down and kissed her. Tom had messaged B'Elanna earlier to see if she could come down to the planet for some personal time. Just the two of them.
"I didn't have much in my desk and the rest of team can take care of everything else. Spending the afternoon with my husband sounded like a good idea," B'Elanna sighed.
Tom smiled and led the way to the market. He placed a hand on the lower part of her back. They passed many shops. saw some gifts for the kids' birthdays and picked them up.
"What a beautiful young couple?" A seller said.
Tom and B'Elanna traded a look. They smiled at the seller. "What do you have to sell?"
The seller held up a beautiful necklace. "This beautiful necklace for your beautiful girlfriend," Tom smile only grew. "You both look so in love," They didn't know that they had three children and have been married almost ten years. Tom was glad that they still looked so in love.
Tom turned to B'Elanna. "What do you think, love?"
The seller held up the necklace to B'Elanna to see how good it looked on her. B'Elanna was ready to say something when their comm badge went off.
"Commander Torres and Paris to the ship," Tom and B'Elanna traded a look. They didn't know what was going on.
Tom smiled at the seller. "Sorry, we have to go," Tom and B'Elanna made their way back to the transporter spot to be beamed up to the ship.
They transported in Transporter Room Two. The crewman operating the transporter said. "Captain would like to see you both in the briefing room."
Tom and B'Elanna nodded and made their way to the briefing room. They entered the briefing room, hoping to see the rest of the senior staff there, but it wasn't only the captain and Chakotay were there. The others that were there were other parents that Tom and B'Elanna would see when dropping off and picking up their children. Tom felt his heart drop because this had something to do with the children.
"Tom, B'Elanna, please take a seat," Captain Janeway said. Tom pulled put a chair for B'Elanna and made her sit.
"What is this about?" B'Elanna asked. She felt Tom's hand on one of her shoulders. B'Elanna reached out for it. Tom gave it squeeze.
Janeway looked at each parent before saying, "While on the planet for the field trip, one of the teachers were attached and five children were taken."
B'Elanna's and Tom's heart dropped. Did this person have taken one or both of their children? Tom looked at the parents and realized the children taken the children were taken from other spices, not human. Tom had a feeling that both of their older children were taken.
"We are going to work with the local authorities to get our children back. Chakotay is going to lead this mission," Janeway turned to Chakotay.
"I will only take one parent with me from each family," Chakotay looked at each of the parents. "Meet me in transporter room two."
Tom helped B'Elanna stand because Tom saw how white she was. Tom led her back to their quarters. He made her take a seat at the table. "B'Elanna," Tom said her name in quiet voice.
"My babies," B'Elanna finally broke. She stood up. "My babies are out there. I don't know if they are hungry or scared. They could be crying for me," She paced the quarters.
"I know," Tom said. "I will get them back," He stopped her pacing and made her look at him. "I'm going to need you to take care of the children we have here?"
B'Elanna raised an eyebrow. "Children?"
Tom smiled. "Gabby and," Tom placed a hand on her still flat womb. "This little guy."
B'Elanna sighed and knew that Tom was right. "Okay," She placed her hands on his chest. "You go and get our other children home," Tom nodded and left their quarters.
B'Elanna watched the door for a moment before deciding to go and get Gabby from day care. She made her way to the day care and picked up Gabby. Gabby was happy to spend the rest of the day with her mom. B'Elanna took Gabby home and let the little girl decide on what they did.
Later that evening, B'Elanna decided it was time for dinner. "Gabby, do you want to eat in the mess hall tonight?"
Gabby jumped up. "Yeah," B'Elanna held out her hand for Gabby to take, Gabby grabbed her hand and they left.
B'Elanna took Gabby to the mess hall, and they grabbed two trays of whatever Neelix was cooking. Neelix leaned over the counter.
"Hello, Gabby, what are you doing here?" Neelix smiled at the young girl.
"Mommy said we could have dinner in the mess hall," Gabby returned Neelix's smile.
"Wow, I hope everything is to your taste," Gabby only beamed. Neelix turned to B'Elanna. He could see the worry on her face. "You know Tom would do anything to get those children back."
B'Elanna nodded. She knew that Neelix was right. She made sure she had both trays before leading Gabby to a table. B'Elanna watched as Gabby ate her food. She ate little only eating because she knew that she was eating for two.
After dinner, B'Elanna and Gabby went back to their quarters, B'Elanna let Gabby watch two movies before putting her to bed. B'Elanna stood in her doorway for about ten minutes. She wanted to take Gabby to her room, but that would only be going backwards with her. She has been sleeping in her own bed for the last few nights. B'Elanna sighed and moved away from the door. She went to her room and changed. She looked at the bed and knew she couldn't sleep until knew the children were home and safe. She went back to the main area and took a seat on the couch.
Tom stood by and watched Chakotay talk to the local magistrate. They were in the park where the children were playing before they were taken. Tom looked around the playground to see that his children would love this place. He had to wonder what would take for his kids to leave their teacher. He knew the other parents were thinking the same thing. Tom knew his children were smart, they did get their brains from their mother.
"Does this bracelet look familiar to anyone?" Chakotay held up a bracelet.
Tom stepped closer and he knew the bracelet right away. It was the same bracelet that Tom and B'Elanna got Miral for her birthday. Miral never took it off.
"It's Miral's" Tom said in a quiet voice. Chakotay handed the bracelet to Tom. Tom noticed the charms that were on the bracelet. He picked up one of the charms. He saw that the tracker was still there. Chakotay raised an eyebrow at him. "We knew that Miral was getting more independent, so we made her a charm with tracker in it. She didn't know," Tom said. He had a feeling that Miral wouldn't have taken it off of she knew.
"Do you think she dropped it on purpose?" Chakotay asked.
"Yes," Tom pocketed the bracelet. Tom remembered telling Miral and her siblings the story of Hansel and Gretel and leaving breadcrumbs to where they were going. Miral started with her bracelet. "Look for something else," Tom said to everyone.
Every parent and magistrate started to look around. "Over here," Someone yelled. Tom ran over as someone picked up something. "I don't know what it is, but I don't think it is part of this world."
When Tom got near and looked at what the person was holding, he knew what it was right away. "It's Dexter's," He took it from the person. "It's a toy from the twentieth century. It is called a hot wheel," Tom looked at the miniature car. It was Dexter's favorite even those he had a big collection in his room. Tom pocketed it, too.
They started looking for the next item. They soon found a headband and other clothing items. Tom found one of his kids' shoes and socks. About an hour later they found a little house on the edge of the woods.
"Tom, get a closer look," Chakotay ordered.
Tom stepped closer and looked in the window. He saw all five kids sitting around a person, who looked to be asking questions. He looked behind the person to a panel. There was something behind that door. Tom looked at his two children to see Miral was looking around the place. She glanced at the window and saw Tom looking in. She smiled and was ready to point him out when Tom shook his head at her. Tom backed away from the window.
"They are in there," He said to the group. "Nothing looks wrong with them," The parents gave a sigh of relief.
"Alright this what we are going to do?" Chakotay said. He outlined a plan for them to enter the house and hoped none of the children are hurt.
They broke into the house with phasers pointed at the person. The person jumped up and grabbed the first kid he could. Tom's heart dropped when he realized that it was Dexter. Dexter's eyes found him, and all Tom saw was fear.
"Please let my son go," Tom whispered.
"Why so you can kill me," The person said.
"No," Tom put his phaser away with his eyes on the person, he said to Chakotay, "Take the kids and get back to the ship."
"Tom," Chakotay warned.
"Daddy," Tom heard Miral's cry.
"Chakotay, please take Miral back to her mother," Tom yelled.
"Bring Dexter and you back," Chakotay pulled Miral out of the house. Tom could hear her crying for him. He hoped that Chakotay would get Miral back to B'Elanna. At least she would get one child back.
"Yes, just you and me," Tom said. "Please give me my son."
"Why, so the authorities can lock me up for taking children? I'm going to say no," The person backed away from Tom. Tom saw as he went to the panel, punched something, and the wall behind him opened. The person stepped in with Dexter.
"Daddy," Dexter cried for Tom.
Tom ran for the door, but they closed right on him. Tom heard the cries of his son. Tom looked at the panel and sighed. He was glad that he had learned a few things from his engineer wife. He started on the panel.
Tom got the panel opened. "Yes," Tom mumbled as he went through the door.
Tom stepped into a state-of-the-art lab. It was huge. Tom looked around to find Dexter and the alien person. They were heading to the back of the lab. Tom followed them slowly. The person didn't look back. He didn't think that Tom would break the code so quickly.
Dexter looked back and saw him. Dexter's face brightened. Tom shook his head, so Dexter didn't alert the person that was there.
The person stepped at a console and started pushing buttons. Tom made his way behind him and tapped him on the shoulder. The person turned around and Tom punched him in the face. "Keep your hands off my children," Tom picked up Dexter as the person passed a hand to their nose. Tom carried Dexter out of the lab and the house. The local authorities were out there waiting. "He's in there," The magistrate nodded.
Tom carried Dexter to the transporter spot to find Chakotay and Miral still there, waiting for them. Tom lifted one eyebrow at Chakotay.
"She has her mother's temper," Chakotay shrugged.
Tom smiled as Miral ran into his legs. Tom leaned down and hugged her. Chakotay touched his comm badge and said four to beam up. They appeared on the transporter pad. They saw the doctor here. The doctor did a scan on the children before letting them go.
Tom carried Dexter as he held Miral's hand. He took them home. They stepped into their quarters to find B'Elanna sleeping on the couch. Tom set Dexter down and the kids ran to their mom.
B'Elanna woke when she felt little arms around her. She looked down at her children. They were smiling at her. "Mommy," They hugged her again. B'Elanna pulled them closer to her. She looked up to see Tom standing there with a smile.
"Thank you," B'Elanna mouthed to him. Tom nodded. B'Elanna looked down at the children. "Time for bed," B'Elanna stood and took the kids to their rooms. She helped them get into their pajamas and into bed. She kissed them goodnight before leaving.
Tom was standing in the living area still in his uniform. B'Elanna went over to him and wrapped her arms around his waist. Tom pulled her close and kissed the top of her head. They stood that way for a few minutes until Tom led the way to their bedroom.
Tom watched as B'Elanna went to her side of bed. Tom reached in his pocket and pulled out the bracelet and toy car, he smiled as he placed them on the bedside table. He would give it to the kids in the morning. B'Elanna raised an eyebrow. "We found the kids because they left breadcrumbs," B'Elanna nodded as she got in bed. Tom went and changed. He got in bed and wrapped his arms around her.
B'Elanna woke to Tom's snores. She looked over and saw him in a deep sleep. She got out of bed and made her way out. She went to the kids' room and watched them sleep.
"They are safe and sound," B'Elanna turned and to see Tom behind her.
"You heard me get up," B'Elanna said.
"Yeah, I know when you leave," Tom smiled. "B'Elanna, we have been together forever."
B'Elanna smiled. "I know, I can sleep through your snores."
Tom chuckled as he looked over her shoulder at the sleeping children. "They look happy. Nothing is going to happen to them."
"I know," B'Elanna turned to Tom. "We're we right in having a family in space?"
"Yes," Tom leaned down and kissed her. "Our lives weren't going to be on hold until we got to the Alpha Quadrant. We knew the risks."
B'Elanna sighed. "This is the first time that someone took them. We could have lost them."
"I know. I'm not going to think about it. They are safe and sound in their beds. We will make it through it," Tom said. "We'll see tomorrow if there is any effect on them," B'Elanna nodded. "Come on lets get back to bed." They made their way back to bed.
