Chapter 1

The opening of the wall that hid the entrance to Diagon Alley was met with anticipation by the youngest child of the family of three. The eleven year old boy was ready to enter the Magical alley to get his school supplies for his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It wasn't the first time he had been in the alley due to his older brother, fifteen, already going to Hogwarts and going through the same thing, for the fifth time this time, but this was the first time he would be getting school supplies. The mother of both boys nodded to them and led the way as they headed in. Walking through Diagon Alley, the boy looked around in wonder at the shops, he'd seen them all several times already, but now he'd actually be making purchases at them, he hoped. It was no secret his family had money troubles, as well as not exactly being regarded very highly, the looks they got, his mother especially, from some of the more 'well-dressed' members of the crowd were ones of disdain. Noticing that eleven year old Will Byers sighed and bit his lip. Will was a short boy with short brown hair styled in a bowl cut, hazel eyes, pale skin and a thin build. Seeing Will's distress, his brother, fifteen year old Jonathan Byers, stepped over next to him. Jonathan was tall with short shaggy brown hair, brown eyes, pale skin and a slender lanky build.

"Hey, don't worry about it Will, don't let them get to you." He said softly.

Will swallowed but nodded. "Yeah, sorry I just...it's not right, I mean, why-?"

"Money is everything to the Pure-Bloods, and even those Half-Bloods who have been lucky enough...We're Half-Bloods since mom married dad, but...not exactly ones with money." Jonathan explained sadly.

He then shrugged and both boys looked to their mother, Joyce Byers was of medium height, shoulder length brown hair, not yet beginning to grey, brown eyes and fair skin, along with a slender build. She walked with her head held high and seemed to respond to the disdain of those looking at them with total indifference.

Having finally reached Gringotts, and having retrieved what money they could from their vault, they now stood outside the bank, ready to begin their shopping. Biting his lip, Will took out his Hogwarts Letter and read it again.

"Dear Mr. William Byers.

Will shook his head.

"Mom, how can we possibly afford all this?" He asked worriedly. "Not just me, the stuff Jonathan needs too, even with the funds we were given to help…"

Joyce just nodded, but did her best to look reassuring. "We'll manage, a lot of what we buy will have to be second-hand...and well…"

"I'll be using some of Jonathan's old first year stuff." Will finished, realising.

Jonathan nodded. "Don't worry, like mom said, we'll manage."

Will bit his lip but nodded and agreed and so they began their shopping.

Will let out a relieved sigh as finally, the majority of the shopping was done for him, Jonathan was still at Flourish and Blotts getting his books for fifth year as he waited outside, Joyce inside helping him. Joyce had been right, they had managed to budget things enough and now all Will needed was a wand, the one thing Joyce insisted on buying new. That was when he heard the familiar voice.

"Will!"

He turned, eyes widening and a smile growing on his face. Approaching was a pale thin boy of below medium height with short slightly curly dark brown hair and brown eyes, he was smiling widely as he stopped in front of Will, who recognized him at once, Mike Wheeler.

"Mike."

The two boys were glad to see each other, their respective oldest friends, having met at a very young age, before things got truly difficult for the Byers family and the only Stigma attached to them being Joyce marrying a Muggle like Lonnie Byers.

"So, I see we've both been getting our stuff." Mike said. "Can't believe it, First Year at Hogwarts, here we come."

Will grinned too. "Yeah, it's gonna be awesome, you um, you seen Dustin or Lucas?"

Mike shook his head. "No, but don't worry, we'll catch them on the train if we don't see them here."

"Ah, cool."

Will did note, but didn't remark on, Mike's current attire, clearly new robes, very well made. He had his school supplies, none second hand. It didn't surprise Will, the Wheelers were one of the richest Pure-Blood Wizarding Families there was, with Mike's father even being an influential member of the Wizengamot.

"Just came from Ollivanders actually." Mike said, pulling out his new wand. "Check it out, what was it he said again…? Oh yeah, Elm and Unicorn Tail Hair, 11 and inches."

Will smiled warmly. "That's cool, I've just gotta go get mine and I'm done."

Mike nodded as he put his wand away, that was one thing that Will appreciated about Mike, he knew about Will and his family's financial difficulties but did not judge, nor try to push too hard when it came to things like helping or such.

But the moment of joy for the boys was cut short by a voice cutting in.

"Michael, get over here!"

Both boys flinched and turned to see the man who had spoken, watching them with narrowed eyes. He was tall with short brown hair, brown eyes and fair skin, as well as a broad shouldered build.

Mike swallowed. "Coming dad."

He hurried over to his father, Ted Wheeler and Will deflated somewhat, knowing Mike would likely be facing a stern lecture now over his continued association with Will. Ted was after all one of those who judged the Byers, perhaps more harshly than others, also for some strange reason, he had a particular animus against Will especially. But it wasn't like anything could be done about it as the three remaining family members, the Wheeler ladies, followed Ted and Mike, not really saying anything, although one sent him an apologetic look. That was fifteen year old Nancy Wheeler, Mike's older sister, a girl of medium height with long brown hair, blue eyes, fair skin and a slender build. She was in Jonathan's year at Hogwarts and was currently carrying the youngest of the Wheeler children, two year old Holly, a little fair skinned girl with brown eyes and long blonde hair in pigtails. The final member was Ted's wife, the kids mother, Karen Wheeler, a woman of medium height with long wavy light brown hair; brown eyes and fair skin, as well as a slender build. Just watching them got made for a perfect sight of the Wheeler family dynamics, where Ted clearly expected to be in charge and the only ones defying him were Mike, by continuing to associate with Will despite his father's words, and Nancy, who would defy him in several small ways, but sadly nothing overt or major.

It was a sad state of affairs Will felt, something his mother and Jonathan agreed with it seemed as they walked to Ollivanders.

"I still don't know how Karen or those kids can put up with it." Joyce muttered sadly.

The brothers shared sympathetic looks but soon their focus was on Will getting his new wand as they entered the shop and were greeted warmly by Ollivander himself.

"Ah young master Byers, greetings, welcome, ready for your first wand, well come, come, let's start." He said. "Why, Jonathan Byers feels like only yesterday when I was presenting you with your first wand...ah and Joyce Byers too."

"Hello Mr. Ollivander, yes, we're here for Will's wand." Joyce replied with a smile.

Mr. Ollivander nodded and begun the process of taking measurements and gathering up possible wands, ready for Will to try it. As expected there were countless attempts and more than a few broken items, but finally, Ollivander handed Will a particular wand.

"Here we are, let's try this." He said. "Cypress and Unicorn Tail Hair, 10 and inches."

Will took the wand and felt the warmth spread through his fingers, this time the wand erupted with a shower of gold stars and Will couldn't help but smile, both his family and Ollivander seemed pleased, too and soon with the wand purchased and wrapped up, the Byers family carried their purchases back to the Leaky Cauldron to catch the Floo Network back to their home, all looking forward to the first day at Hogwarts for Will.
