The room had to take a breather, as the previous episode had been very educational for them, as they learned about Salem and Ozpin's history. They ever would have guessed that at some point the two had deep feelings for one another, even having kids! Oh…the poor children who were unfortunate to get mixed up in their feud. They knew this next episode would be the confrontation of Ozpin after he kept from them that Salem is immortal and all the Relics being brought together would summon the Gods to judge the world. Which, admittedly and justifiably, they were still angry with him for that information being kept from them. Who doesn't tell a group of teenagers that the great evil you're going off to fight is immortal, that seemed like crucial knowledge to them or they'd be walking unknowingly right into their graves.
They all agreed they didn't feel like being killed by celestial beings in the next few months, thank you. They could only imagine how they'd all take it, they just hoped that all of it wouldn't be anger, they'd at least want their counterparts to be empathetic toward him. "I just hope the next few episodes will be uneventful," Ruby said, tired already. No one saw Raider wince and make a face behind them.
(Volume 6 Intro)
Everyone's eyes grew wide, that must be Jaune's reaction to hearing about everything. None of them were there, so they're gonna have to tell everything when they meet up with one another. It's one of those cases where you tell someone they don't want to know but have to tell them anyway.
"Salem can't be killed, you all heard her too, right?" Yang angrily said, all of them staring down at Ozpin. Qrow had his back turned to the man.
"Well, her immortality is technically a curse, isn't it? If she learns the value of life and death it will be lifted, and she won't be immortal anymore," Ruby says. Then they would be able to kill her.
"Also, Ozpin can't defeat her, his question was referring to himself, not if she can be defeated," Jaune added.
All of them saw Qrow, this was harder on him than any other person, to realize that his sister was right in not trusting him and all his lies. Qrow trusted Ozpin with everything and was hit with this betrayal. Ozpin's lies will hurt more to him than anyone else there.
Ozpin tried to speak, but Yang cut him off, "There was so much that you hadn't told us! How could you think that was okay?!"
Yang noticed her anger, yes, some of her anger was warranted, but it seemed like much more than was necessary. Then again, this could just be coming from herself who stopped with her friends and took the time to think and rationalize all they've been told. Either way, Yang couldn't help to roll her eyes, should have expected it to be me to do all the yelling.
Ruby, more quietly, asks what the professor planned to defeat Salem. Tears streamed down his cheeks, "I don't have one."
"WHAT?!" All of them shouted. After all those years he's known, all that time, he hasn't even come up with a single plan?
Sun throws his hands in the air, "So, we're all really just doing this all blind."
Ruby shook her head, "No, we're gonna think of something. Now that we know her immortality can be lifted, we can come up with ways to lift it." That was their first step, without it, she could just keep coming back.
"How are we supposed to convince a woman, whose heart and emotions died a long time ago, to see the value in life and death?" Nora asked. Ruby grits her teeth, tears of frustration welling.
"I don't know! But we have to think of something!" She shouted. Yang comforted her sister and they all sat for a moment until they were ready to move on.
Qrow let out a cry and punched Ozpin into a tree.
Everyone gasped. Some were covering their mouths in shock. Blake looked like she was calculating before hesitantly saying, "Guys, you don't think this is the correlation to Qrow going down a drinking hole, right?"
Yang and Ruby's faces paled. Horrified that their uncle's habits will lead to something lethal. They were terrified they were going to lose their uncle to his drinking addiction. It was moderate at best before this, but now…
Ruby, you should be worried how this is all going to pile onto you later, Raider thought.
"No one wanted me, I was cursed," Qrow choked out, his fists clenching.
Qrow has the right to be angrier than anyone there.
"I gave my life to you because you gave me a place in this world, I thought I was finally doin' some good." Ozpin tells him that he is.
"As much as we all don't like Ozpin at the moment, he got one thing right, which was you, Qrow," Ruby said, "You did so much good for this world, whether it was for someone else or not, you did so much good."
"Meeting you was the worst luck of my life." Ozpin went silent, thinking over his words before agreeing with him. His eyes flash and Oscar's soul takes his place, the boy feeling his cheek.
All of them were appalled. Did he just run away?
Ruby asked what happened, "H-He's gone…"
"He's what? No this isn't over, he can't just run away," Ren says, his voice rising.
"Yeah, there's so much he's gotta own up to!" Sun shouted.
That coward!
"THAT BASTARD, TELL HIM WE'RE NOT DONE YET!" Yang screams, marching closer.
Yang sighed, yes, her anger is defendable, but at the same time, it seems like hers is so much more palpable.
"No, this is different," Oscar says, "He's gone , i-it's like he's locked himself deep inside my head."
Locking himself in his room like a child instead of facing the consequences of all his lying. That alone angered them further.
"So he's deciding to hide away so he doesn't have to face the repercussions? Are you serious?" Weiss exclaimed.
"Our head?" Oscar grips it and releases his frustration, "I hate this, I want it to stop!"
Oscar raised a hand to his own head, there was a possibility that this was going to be him. Not after asking the question, but if there was a chance that they told Ozpin that they already knew. For the students at Beacon, the interactions with him were going to be…awkward to say the very least.
"He just left us?" Weiss asked.
"What are we gonna do?" Blake panicked and Yang was still angry.
"Okay, being upset isn't going to fix anything," Yang yelled, more to herself but it could be applied to all of them, "All of us need to calm down unless we want to attract more Grimm than we have to worry about than usual because of the Relic."
Pyrrha nodded, "Yang's right, fighting right now out in the open isn't going to solve anything, it's only going to cause us more problems."
"Enough!" Maria shouted, grabbing their attention, "We need to get a move on, it'll be dark before we know it and every one of you is spewing negativity!"
You know, with all that was going on, they kinda forgot she was even there. Whoops. Good thing she was there, though, because if she weren't they would all just be standing there and complaining.
Maria helps Oscar up and she points off with her cane, "There's a trail over there, trails usually lead somewhere."
"Lady, I don't know who you think you are but–!" Yang started but was cut off.
"Ugh!" Yang let out in annoyance, "Would you just quit being angry for a moment? It's getting on my nerves! Yes, you're upset, but you won't be angry anymore when your body is dead in the snow from all the Grimm attraction!" Yang huffed and Blake rested a hand on her shoulder. Yang instantly began to calm down, but she still felt a little peeved. She thanked Blake.
"No buts! I understand that you're upset, honestly, I'm still coming to terms with the fact that this is humanity's second time around." Yang, Blake, and Weiss looked down sadly as they thought about it.
"Don't remind us," Nora mumbled.
"But, if we don't move, we die! And I'll be damned if I've lived this long just to die out here in the cold!"
"Thank you, Maria!" Weiss yelled exasperatedly. Nice to know there's someone in the group who has a little common sense at the moment. Now, they're wondering if they can take that common sense and keep it with them until they find some kind of shelter or…something!
"She's right," Ruby finally says, "Come on." Everyone begins to grab what they need, Weiss or dust, Qrow bullets, and Yang her bike with Maria sitting on it. Ruby walks over and holds Ozpin's cane.
Oscar frowns as that's now just going to be a sick reminder that's sticking with him.
"I'm just going to be another one of his lies, aren't I?" Oscar asked while he took hold of the cane. Ruby rests her hands on his, telling Oscar that of course it wasn't, he's his own person.
"Don't lie to him, Ruby," Qrow says as he walks past, drinking from his flask, "We're better than that."
"Uncle Qrow…" Ruby mutters, feeling that same fear well up in her when she sees him take a drink.
"He's gonna be okay," Yang attempted to reassure, but she was scared too. He's gotta be okay…
Oscar snatches the weapon and joins the group. Ruby sadly follows after. In Salem's Domain, nevermores were minding their own business, sitting on dark crystals, when an airship shot past them, startling them.
Oh, great, this was just what they all needed.
The ship landed in its dock and Hazel, Emerald, and Mercury stepped off. Emerald spared a glance at Hazel but kept moving. The group was greeted by a giddy Tyrian, leaning against the wall.
They would never stop getting chills whenever they saw the man, there were just so many things about him that set off multiple alarms. Why was he so happy with them anyway? If he was this chipper then something awful must have happened.
"Welcome back, welcome back. I hope you missed us just as we missed you."
What was that thing on the end of his tail? It looked mechanical.
"Let's go," Hazel grunts out and the two follow. Tyrian hums to himself and wonders where their Fall Maiden is.
Roaming around the lower levels of Mistral.
Emerald stops and Tyrian fake gasps before going into a giggling fit. Emerald clenches her fists and Mercury says, "Emerald, come on."
Blake remembers Raider whispering that she won't stay for long, would this be that volume because she thinks Cinder is dead?
"Don't tell me something happened to her? Hehehe," Tyrian laughed, using a baby voice, pretending to care.
This sadistic…piece of work. They were expecting some kind of fight to break out as Tyrian continued to toy with Emerald's grief.
"Despite the person being Emerald, he's fucked up to laugh at someone's grief," Yang said.
"I will cut off more than just your tail!" Emerald exclaims, taking out her guns.
"Careful, little girl," Tyrian murmurs as he stalks closer, "Cinder isn't here to protect you anymore." Tyrian rubs his face against the blade of one of her guns and seems to enjoy it.
"What is wrong with this guy?" Weiss said, feeling disgusted.
"Many things…" Blake finishes. They all collectively agreed, well, a long time ago, that Tyrian was absolutely sick in the head.
"I hate every single scene we see him," Sun mutters.
Mercury calls Tyrian a freak and demands he back off. "Oh, don't misunderstand, I am in mourning."
"Bullshit," Yang mumbles.
"Just as you because it appears you've failed our queen, and that is a tragedy."
They're all morbidly curious about where Salem even found this man. Was he twisted from the start or was it something gradual? Also, none of them cared to point out the cut on his cheek from Emerald's weapon.
Emerald, terrified, walks away with Hazel and Mercury as Tyrian begins to laugh maniacally behind them. The group is now being glared at by Salem as she calmly asks for them to explain, "How is it you failed so spectacularly?"
"Well, when you think about all the aspects, it's really not that hard to explain. You see, first, you had the army of Faunus from Menagerie that they hadn't taken into account, then, you had Raven planning to stab you all in the back this whole time, and lastly you had Cinder's poor planning attack by wanting to bring all of them together." Weiss was going down the list as if she were in a meeting, and everyone around her was nodding their heads in agreement.
"As Weiss is saying, a few unaccounted-for strains to the entire operation," Ruby adds, including her own accent to match her partner. Weiss spares a glance at a Ruby, who's trying not to giggle, but doesn't say anything.
"Why are we making this sound like a business meeting?" Sun asked.
"I was just going off of Weiss," Ruby states, shrugging. Weiss just sighs.
"The Faunus Militia split our forces," Hazel spoke, scared, until Salem ordered him to stop.
"Let me rephrase the question. Who is responsible for your defeat?" Hazel slowly rises from his seat.
They hated how everything went silent, no music.
Hazel takes full responsibility. Salem uses her powers to slam the table against the wall.
The action causes all of them to jump.
"But that wouldn't be fair now, would it?!" Salem marches toward Hazel, "We all know who's truly to blame."
Who? Cinder?
Hazel isn't given a chance to speak before Grimm hands burst from the floor, wrap all over his body, and force him to kneel.
All of them are watching with horror. That looked like the hands that they continued to see in the intro.
Salem kept him there, doing nothing before turning to Emerald. She wanted her to tell her whose fault it was. The girl was shaking in terror, and when Salem got closer and whispered 'now', Emerald caved. "Cinder! We failed because of Cinder."
"That's right," Salem places her hand on Emerald's shoulder, "I want you to understand that failure, I want you to understand why Cinder must be left to toil in her isolation until she redeems herself."
Salem knows that Cinder is alive? How? "Does Salem have spies watching over her?" Osca asked.
"Does Salem have Grimm spies or scouts?" Blake added. It's a possibility as Grimm are all over the place and some could be following Cinder and then coming back to report to Salem of her whereabouts.
Salem removes her hand and Emerald's eyes widen when she hears this. Both she and Mercury voice that she's alive. "You're joking," Watts says in disbelief.
"Yeah, we couldn't believe it either," Nora states.
"How could you know that?" Watts wants to know the proof of that and Tyrian gets on to him, mad that he's questioning their divine savior. "Of course not, forgive me."
"We're still curious about–" Raider cut Sun off as she knew what he was going to ask. She pulled up a tablet out of thin air and read over.
"Tyrian Callows was already a serial killer who showed properties of no remorse to human life, making a perfect individual for Salem. Given his mental instability, Salem was able to manipulate him to do her bidding. Possibly due to Salem's further investigation of the crime world, she found him." Sun had a look of confusion, more so because Raider just answered his question that he hadn't even gotten to finish asking. Raider waved her hand, "Don't think too much about it, it'll be better that way."
Hearing that, and knowing both of the two people, that made perfect sense. Scary to know that Tyrian was a serial killer, but made perfect sense nonetheless.
"It's important not to lose sight of what drives us. Love, justice, reverence," Salem looks directly at Emerald who stares back, "But the moment you put your desires before my own, they will be lost to you." Hazel gasps for breath as he's freed. "This isn't a threat."
Mhm, sure it wasn't.
"This is simply the truth."
The truth is still very threatening.
"The path to your desires is only found through me." Hazel stands back up and the two beside observe her. Tyrian smiles evilly and Watts brushes his coat while Salem looks out the window. "And so we must…press on. The sword under Vacuo's Academy, Shade–" Hazel boldly cuts her off.
So the Relic of Destruction is held at Shade Academy in Vacuo, good to know.
"I have…more to report," Hazel informs. Salem summons the arms below him, ready to strangle him if it isn't to her liking. "Qrow and the children are taking the lamp to Atlas." Tyrian giggles, whispering not if he could help it. "And they are being led by Ozpin." Salem is quiet as the others are conversing. Mercury looks to the left to find the windows beginning to crack.
All of them knew what was coming, they were trying to mentally prepare themselves for the shouting that was about to happen. Some were even closing one of their eyes like that was going to make it better.
Watts stops talking when everyone notices the damage. They all look to Salem who has black smoke surrounding her.
She believed Ozpin to be dead because…Cinder…told…her…oh.
Her being the reason the attack on Haven failed and misinformed her about Ozpin, even though she had no clue. If Raven didn't kill that woman then Salem surely would.
"Leave," Salem demanded. Tyrian attempted to calm her but a single look stopped him. The room continued to rattle and Hazel placed a hand on Emerald's shoulder, gesturing for them to go. All exit the room and as the door closes, Emerald stares through the crack. Everything is deathly quiet as Salem releases a breath. After another moment of pause, she releases her anger with a roar, all of the windows shattering around her.
All in the room were trembling scared of just what Salem could get like when she was angry. That wasn't even the worst of it! He knows what other kind of damage she could do in her fits of anger. Destroy and kill a family were one of them.
Team RWBY and others continued to trek through the snow and Qrow complained about the snow not letting up.
They don't know how long it's been since then, how low are their aura levels?
Blake just wants to get the stupid Relic to Atlas and Weiss hopes they don't have to walk all the way there.
Gods, they hoped they didn't.
Yang told Maria that she thought trails led somewhere. "Do you have nothing better to do than to harass a 'defenseless old lady'?" Maria countered.
Apparently, at the moment, she didn't.
Ruby shushes them, asking if they hear what they heard.
"Yeah, it sounds like creaking. Like something from a gate," Oscar commented.
"And where there's a gate, there's a building being surrounded!" Jaune exclaimed excitedly.
I'd pump the brakes on the enthusiasm, Jaune.
They all went silent and heard the same thing. In a small area with a small house, a gate squeaked and was moved by the wind.
"Yes! Shelter!" Ruby shouted happily.
Ruby puts her hand on the gate and above is a wooden arch that reads 'BRUNSWICK FARMS'.
"It all seems so deserted, what do you think happened?" Blake asked.
Blake comments that at least one good thing happened that day.
Couldn't have said it better, all of them thought unanimously.
Weiss calls it abandoned and Ruby tells her it's better than the snow. "Come on, I think we could all use some rest," Qrow says and they all head in. Qrow swings the gate and it closes with an unsettling noise.
"Did anyone else get horror vibes from that final bit?" Yang asked. It was the music that went along with that made it a little creepy.
"Well, this is a place that's out in the middle of nowhere, it will give horror vibes nonetheless," Sun said. Yang shrugged as that was true. Maybe she was just a bit paranoid after watching Salem's outrage.
"Still, I think Yang's onto something. Something about that place doesn't sit right with me," Pyrrha says with a shudder.
Well, it's the best with what they could make do, and will have to make the most of it before they move on to Argus.
