The drive to the camp continues as I watch the country scenery. I see the sea stretching out and cars passing by. I look over at Magellan and I see that he is keeping his eyes either on the road or out the window. It's as if he's keeping watch.
The driver suddenly gets a call. "Hello... Just driving some kids why?... Now? I'm in the middle of a job..." He lets out a deep sigh as he looks back at us through the rearview mirror. "Give me like 5 minutes?... Alright, alright! I'm going I'm going... See you soon... Bye," He hangs up as he looks at us.
"I'm gonna need to let you guys off early. My friend needs me back in the city for some reason. Some investigation is happening or something."
I look at him curiously, while I'm also internally panicking. "Investigation?"
He nods. "Yeah, apparently it happened in the Empire State Building."
My eyes widen. "Really?"
He nods again. "Yeah, so I'm gonna need to go back."
He starts to slow down and soon he comes to a complete stop. He hands me back $10. "Here. I didn't take you all the way so you take some back."
With a 'thank you', I take the $10 as Magellan and I exit the cab. The driver calls me over to his window. "The name's Nick, in case you were wondering," as he sticks out his hand.
I accept it. "The name's Jack. Thanks for the help, Nick."
I step off to the side of the road as Nick does a U-turn. I wave until he is out of sight, then look over at Magellan. "Do you know how to get back to camp?"
He nods. "Yeah, but we're gonna have to walk a bit."
Magellan eyes me with concern as I shrug. "That's fine. We're not gonna get any closer if we just stand here." I grin at him.
He grins back as he points in a direction. "Camp is that way so let's start."
We both start walking that way with Magellan leading the way. "What's the name of the camp?" I ask.
Magellan looks back at me. "Its official name is Camp Half-Blood, but everyone just calls it Camp."
I nod. "You said 'not a son of Athena' as did that monster. What were you guys talking about?"
Magellan freezes. "They'll tell you at camp. The more you know, the more danger you are in," he finally said. Magellan starts walking again as he scans the trees looking for any danger.
"What is this dagger made out of?" I ask, pulling it out and looking it over.
"Celestial Bronze. It's deadly against monsters but won't hurt mortals. Almost any weapon you'll get will be made out of Celestial Bronze."
"How is it made?" I question him.
He gives me a shrug. "Couldn't tell you honestly; I'm sure someone at camp will tell you the details."
We trek on for a bit more before Magellan tells me that we are close to the camp border. Suddenly, a howl sounds behind us and I pale at the sound. I can see that Magellan is also afraid. We both look back and see a Hellhound walking towards us. "Jack! Run!"
He pushes me forward, following right behind me. We both sprint as the protective barrier comes into sight. "We're almost there!" Magellan shouts, and I hear the Hellhound getting closer.
"Do you have anything that can kill it?" I shout back.
Magellan shakes his head. "Maybe to restrain it but only for a little bit!" I curse under my breath as we get so close, but I hear the Hellhound practically right behind us.
I suddenly move to the right as the Hellhound snaps at where I was. I trip over my feet but quickly pick myself up as the Hellhound looks at me with a menacing look. I see that Magellan has made it across the border and looks back to see me. "Jack!"
I try to measure the distance I'd need to make but I already know that the Hellhound will get to me before I'd make it. "Get someone! Get help!"
He looks nervously at me before running off, leaving me with the Hellhound. "Hello beastie," I say to the Hellhound as it growls at me. I bring out my dagger and the Hellhound gives it a nervous look. We start to circle each other.
My back is towards the barrier when it moves. It runs up to me and I feel my heart start to pound as it jumps and tries to take a bite out of me.
I step back and slash at it with the dagger. It dodges the slash and lunges to take another bite. I step back but I trip and my back hits the ground. The Hellhound pounces with its jaw open wide, going straight for the kill.
I do the only thing I can. I hit it in the jaw with a right hook.
The Hellhound shrieks and backs away with shock. It quickly recovers as it goes for the kill.
Just as it is about to kill me, I hear an arrow whistle and it lodges the Hellhound's shoulder. The Hellhound snarls with rage and pain as it looks towards the new attacker. Taking advantage of the distraction, I quickly use my dagger and thrust it up towards its throat.
I feel the dagger bury deeply into its neck and black blood starts to flow out as I pull out and stab again. As the Hellhound backs away, I bury my dagger into its eye. With a loud howl of pain, the Hellhound turns to golden dust.
I managed to get up and I see Magellan looking at me with shock and someone standing next to him. I walk towards them, trying to figure out who the other person is as my strength leaves me and I fall forward. The last thing I hear is Magellan yelling my name as darkness overtakes me.
Third Person POV
Nick pulls up to the police station as he gets out and heads inside. "Hey Reed. What did you need so badly?"
Reed is a detective and Nick's friend; he and Nick occasionally help each other out with things. He's 30 years old with a black suit and a red tie. "Thanks for coming over Nick. I needed your eyes and ears again," Reed says. Nick talks with a lot of people and can get the right information on a case.
Nick nods "What do you need me for then? Something that couldn't be said over the phone"
Reed sighs. "What do you know about what happened at the Empire State Building?"
Nick shrugs. "Not much only, that there was an investigation. I assume that it's your case?"
Reed nods. "It looks like there was an altercation between a woman and a boy. We can't find the woman and the boy is missing. There was another person that stepped in, but we can't find him either," Reed explains.
Nick nods his head. "Any chance you got a description or a picture I can work with?" Reed looks around as he pulls out two pictures. Nick's face pales as he sees the pictures. He looks up to Reed.
"I know where they went. They were my passengers."
Reed's eyes bulge at this information. "Do you know where they are?"
Nick shakes his head. "I had to drop them off on the side of the road to get to you."
"What about where they were going?" Reed inquires.
Nick shakes his head. "They only said to take them to Long Island," as he looks back down at your picture.
"Jack, what's your story?"
